YouTube Monetization Explained: Why Others Get Paid MORE Than You! - YouTube

Channel: vidIQ

[0]
so you have 1 000 subscribers and you
[2]
have 4 000 hours watched you've applied
[4]
for
[4]
and been accepted into the youtube
[6]
partner program all you want to do now
[8]
is turn on monetization
[9]
and start earning some sweet sweet cash
[13]
but of course that just leads to the
[15]
next obvious question
[17]
how much am i going to earn from my
[19]
youtube videos
[20]
well around about this much
[24]
now then hey folks i'm rob welcome back
[25]
to vid iq educating you
[27]
on your youtube journey and today's
[29]
lesson is everything you need to know
[31]
about youtube cpms the term itself
[35]
cpm stands for this but all you need to
[37]
know from a youtube perspective
[39]
is that it shows you the dollars you
[40]
earn per 1000 views
[42]
you can of course find this data on the
[44]
analytics page of the youtube studio
[46]
either for your channel as a whole or
[48]
for individual
[49]
videos oh but if only it was
[52]
that simple because you see what we've
[55]
got to do now
[56]
is stack a layer upon layer of
[58]
complexity
[60]
onto this number to work out exactly how
[62]
much you would make
[63]
as a creator all right then where do we
[65]
start let's go with
[67]
revenue share this number does not
[69]
reflect youtube's cut of the
[71]
advertising yes that's right folks
[73]
youtube has a platform to maintain and
[75]
profits to earn so what they're gonna do
[77]
is take a percentage
[79]
of every single cent you earn through ad
[82]
revenue
[82]
whether you agree with this or not is a
[84]
topic for the comment section
[86]
but the standard agreement for revenue
[88]
sharing is a 45-55 split
[90]
meaning that for every dollar you earn
[92]
in ad revenue
[94]
you keep 55 cents while youtube takes
[96]
the other 45 cents
[98]
and this figure as seen in youtube
[100]
analytics does not reflect
[102]
that revenue share your real cpm would
[105]
look
[105]
more like this and on top of this if you
[108]
are part of an mcn
[109]
it doesn't factor in any of their
[111]
revenue share next up
[113]
is estimated playbacks just because you
[115]
have monetized your channel
[116]
does not mean that every single view has
[119]
adverts placed against them
[121]
in this example just under two-thirds of
[123]
the total views
[124]
have been monetized and so because of
[126]
this you can't just say to yourself
[128]
that you're going to earn ten dollars
[129]
for every thousand views
[131]
it's probably more like ten dollars for
[133]
every 1
[134]
317 views but that doesn't even include
[137]
youtube's ad revenue share man this is
[138]
getting complicated
[140]
of course the moment you monetize your
[141]
natural instinct is to just
[143]
turn everything on from sponsored cars
[145]
to non-skippable middle ads
[147]
but what does that actually mean in
[148]
terms of cpm well you can actually find
[150]
that out by going to the add type filter
[153]
in advanced youtube
[154]
studio analytics as you can see there
[156]
can be a huge difference between
[158]
cpms typically video ads will attract a
[161]
lot higher cpm
[163]
compared to display or bumper ads
[165]
because well
[166]
they're a lot more noticeable and
[167]
annoying now obviously
[169]
more adverts per video means a higher
[172]
cpm especially if your video
[174]
is longer than eight minutes as that
[176]
allows you to insert
[178]
mid-roll ads but be aware of a tipping
[181]
point between
[182]
tolerance and annoyance every advert
[185]
you place on a video creates a barrier
[188]
between
[189]
your content and your audience i mean
[191]
let's face it
[192]
we're all youtube viewers and typically
[194]
we want to see
[195]
as little ads as possible but at the
[197]
same time we know that they
[199]
nourish the creator economy typically if
[201]
you just
[202]
tick all of the ad boxes youtube will do
[204]
a very good automated job of placing the
[207]
adverts where they need to be
[208]
but if you go manual really be
[211]
considerate about where you're placing
[212]
your adverts all right now we've talked
[214]
about all of the ways your content can
[216]
be monetized
[217]
but there are one or two exceptions that
[220]
you need to be aware of
[221]
if you're creating content on the
[223]
fringes
[224]
believe it or not youtube content made
[226]
for kids somewhat falls into this
[228]
category thanks to youtube getting in a
[230]
lot of trouble a couple of years back
[232]
when they collected data on children
[234]
and they shouldn't have been doing that
[236]
they received a 170 million dollar fine
[239]
basically everything you do as an adult
[242]
on youtube
[243]
is documented and analyzed and with all
[245]
of this data
[246]
whenever you watch a video youtube will
[249]
specifically target you with almost
[252]
personalized ads ads
[254]
that are designed to prey on your wants
[257]
your needs your desires
[258]
even your fears and to be clear this
[260]
isn't just youtube that's doing it
[262]
it's the entire internet i mean not that
[264]
i want to scare you off the internet or
[265]
anything but you should really watch the
[267]
social dilemma
[268]
on netflix if you can it's fascinating
[269]
stuff now having said all of this
[271]
when it comes to children this is what
[273]
youtube definitely
[275]
cannot do personalized targeted ads
[278]
and because of the very limited data
[280]
youtube can collect about kids
[282]
advertisers can't target their adverts
[284]
as much as they would like
[286]
meaning the adverts are less valuable
[288]
ultimately reducing cpm
[290]
on the opposite end of the spectrum we
[292]
have self certification
[294]
when you first monetize content you will
[296]
likely need to answer these questions
[298]
about your videos the reason for this is
[300]
because
[301]
some forms of content may limit the
[303]
types of ads that appear
[304]
on your videos some stuff like mild
[306]
profanity
[307]
will have no impact whereas highly
[309]
shocking content
[310]
most definitely will so obviously many
[314]
brands are not going to want to
[315]
advertise their products and services
[318]
on content that contains the things
[320]
listed in that self certification
[321]
because of that
[322]
you may receive lower cpms now of course
[325]
there may be the temptation to just
[327]
lie on this form but that is the last
[330]
and worst thing you should be doing
[332]
that's because youtube doesn't take your
[334]
word for it at least to begin with
[336]
youtube's automated systems will review
[338]
your content
[339]
but as you correctly self-certify more
[341]
of your videos
[342]
your rating accuracy will increase
[345]
meaning your content is less likely to
[347]
be mislabeled with
[348]
limited ads in the future now to someone
[350]
who just wants to make money on youtube
[352]
these checks
[353]
could be seen as nothing more than an
[354]
obstacle to financial gain
[356]
but these checks and balances are here
[359]
for
[360]
everybody they protect the viewer the
[362]
advertiser
[363]
and indeed you the creator because in
[365]
the past
[366]
bad actors have taken advantage and
[368]
manipulated parts of youtube
[370]
which have resulted in these checks and
[373]
balances and also
[374]
remember what you're doing here you're
[376]
entering into a business relationship
[378]
with youtube do you really want to try
[380]
and lie and deceive them
[382]
it's just not going to be a healthy and
[384]
long-running business relationship is it
[386]
youtube has a ton of information about
[388]
ad policies on their support pages by
[390]
the way i've linked them all below in
[391]
the description
[392]
just underneath the light button so
[394]
those are the basic
[395]
complexities of cpm but to be honest
[398]
we've only just started that's because
[401]
not all cpm
[402]
is treated equal some channels get this
[405]
whereas others get this let's try and
[408]
answer
[409]
why well let's start with geographic
[411]
location the average american has more
[413]
disposable income than the average
[415]
indian
[415]
this leads to different products and
[417]
services being advertised likely of a
[420]
higher value leading to more expensive
[422]
ads and higher cpms people in the us
[425]
age between 35 and 55 generally earn the
[428]
most and spend the most money
[430]
which again may lead to higher cpms for
[432]
ads targeted towards
[434]
that age group spending on health care
[436]
between the age of 1 and 64 is dwarfed
[438]
by the 65s and over
[440]
35 to 55 year olds spend the most money
[443]
on
[443]
food at home now i could continue to
[445]
scour the internet to find
[447]
random facts about who has the most
[448]
money and spends it on what
[450]
but here's the thing youtube essentially
[452]
knows
[453]
the value of every single user on the
[456]
platform
[456]
and advertisers know exactly how much to
[459]
spend
[460]
on each of those viewers youtube knows
[462]
that somebody in college
[464]
who watches gaming content has a lot
[466]
less disposable income
[468]
than a 40 year old who enjoys travel
[470]
vlogs all of which
[472]
brings us back to this a sample of some
[474]
of the typical cpms for different niches
[477]
which as you can see from country to
[479]
country vary
[480]
greatly by all means pause the video and
[483]
take a closer look if you want to now
[485]
but the general trends suggest that
[487]
health business investing auto reviews
[491]
real estate insurance and online
[493]
marketing
[494]
are the places to be when it comes to
[496]
earning potential
[497]
from ad revenue alone on youtube now on
[500]
top of the
[500]
geographic location and the demographics
[503]
of the viewer
[503]
as well as channel niche you also have
[505]
to consider seasonality just as an
[508]
example
[508]
cpms for tech channels go through the
[511]
roof as we approach christmas
[513]
because it's the gift buying season and
[515]
people are making purchasing decisions
[517]
when they're watching tech content
[519]
however the moment we leave the holiday
[521]
season
[522]
cpms tank on those channels for a couple
[524]
of months but on the other hand
[526]
we're now into the new year's resolution
[529]
season
[529]
so food and fitness channels see their
[532]
cpms right
[533]
also from an advertiser's perspective
[535]
you have to look at this from an
[537]
inventory point of view there are
[540]
countless
[540]
gaming channels so advertisers can pick
[543]
and choose
[544]
who they want and they don't necessarily
[546]
have to spend that much
[547]
doing it because there's so much
[549]
availability for those advertisers
[551]
whereas if you're the only channel on
[553]
youtube that reviews
[555]
bed mattresses then you only need a
[557]
couple of hundred views to get
[559]
unbelievable cpms in short if your
[563]
passion in life is to earn lots and lots
[565]
of money
[566]
beyond anything else then you'll be able
[569]
to make content
[570]
on those topics that earn the high cpm
[572]
but for a majority of us
[574]
it's simply not the case ultimately for
[576]
most creators
[577]
you want to share your passion for a
[579]
topic that's going to build
[581]
an audience around and because of that
[583]
you don't really have
[584]
that much control over your cpm and even
[587]
then
[588]
the amount you earn from youtube ad
[590]
revenue can change at the flick of a
[593]
youtube switch as a first milestone ad
[596]
revenue and cpm
[597]
is nice but ultimately in the long term
[601]
to turn your youtube channel into a
[603]
business ad revenue cpm
[606]
is a small icing on the cake for most
[608]
creators
[609]
your aim should be to wean yourself off
[612]
of ad revenue
[614]
as soon as possible because essentially
[616]
youtube has all the control
[618]
there are many other sources of income
[621]
that will bring you in so much more
[624]
money
[625]
and better yet you'll have more control
[628]
over those sources of income
[629]
ad revenue and cpms are nice because
[632]
essentially they're automatic you don't
[634]
have to do anything
[635]
it's convenient but with a little bit of
[637]
business acumen
[639]
and some efforts you can easily 10x your
[642]
youtube
[643]
income and also to the left
[646]
of cpm in the youtube analytics there is
[648]
something called
[649]
rpm which is to be honest a more
[652]
valuable figure and if you want to learn
[654]
more about that check out the video over
[656]
here but of course no vid iq video would
[658]
be complete without the code word
[661]
show me 55 percent of the money
