Best Gold Coins - Everything You Need To Know - UPDATED - YouTube
Channel: 2 is 1
[0]
it's hard to go wrong with gold coins, but if you聽
don't know where to start or you're concerned聽聽
[4]
about making an expensive mistake, well i have a聽
few tips that i picked up over the last 10 years聽聽
[9]
and if you don't really need the聽
advice but you like to look at聽gold coins
[11]
well i've picked up a few of those too
[21]
if you're new to gold let me just start聽
by saying welcome - buying gold can seem a聽聽
[26]
little bit mysterious, even a little bit聽
strange before you actually get into it聽聽
[31]
because it isn't really something that's talked聽
about often, and my hope in making this video is聽聽
[35]
just to demystify it a bit... make it seem a聽
little less strange and then hopefully聽聽
[40]
save you some money while we're at it because if you聽
charge into this all Leroy Jenkins style you can聽聽
[46]
waste a lot of money fast. I'll also just say聽
that I have made a video similar to this before聽聽
[52]
but a lot has changed in the last few months,聽
and that affects both price and availability聽聽
[56]
so my recommendations in that video on what to聽
buy and where to buy them need a few updates聽聽
[62]
the first thing you're going to need to know is聽
just simply what to buy, and this varies depending聽聽
[66]
on where you live and what your reasons for buying聽
gold are, but generally speaking you want the most聽聽
[71]
well-known coins in your region, and you want聽
to find them at the best price possible as well聽聽
[75]
but those two things don't always go together聽
unfortunately. Here in the United States the聽聽
[80]
U.S. Mint produces the American Gold Eagle and the聽
American Buffalo, and if price wasn't an issue and聽聽
[86]
you lived in the United States we'd be able to聽
say that either those two coins would be your聽top choice
[89]
we'd be able to move on. For the last聽
few months though in the first quarter of 2021聽聽
[95]
Eagles and Buffaloes have carried a much聽
higher premium than normal聽聽
[99]
much higher than most other government-backed bullion coins聽so you might want to consider a few alternatives聽聽
[104]
before we get into those alternatives though let's聽
just take a look at these two聽聽
[109]
these coins are similar in a lot of ways - they're both investment聽grade coins with little to no collector value聽聽
[115]
so you're effectively paying for the gold content聽
plus a premium that covers the retail cost of聽producing and selling the coin
[120]
both of these聽coins have one ounce of gold content so they'll聽cost whatever the spot price of gold is at the聽time
[126]
today it's about $1,750 and then you'll pay聽a premium on top of that of about six percent
[133]
currently with everything going on that premium聽is more like 11% and higher
[140]
and that's why we're聽going to look at alternatives here in a minute聽聽
[145]
the primary differences between these two聽
coins are the popularity and the gold purity聽聽
[150]
the American Gold Eagle is the most popular聽
gold coin in the world right now and that claim聽聽
[155]
is based on recent sales figures the South African聽
Krugerrand would beat it by total historical sales聽聽
[161]
but if you live in the United States this is聽
the top gold coin - it's a 22 karat gold coin聽聽
[167]
so in addition to the one ounce of fine gold, it has聽
8.33% of silver and copper alloy 聽聽
[173]
you don't pay more for that extra metal content - it's there simply to聽make the coin more durable
[178]
since copper and silver聽are harder metals than gold American Gold Eagles聽come in fractional sizes as well聽聽
[184]
you can find the one tenth ounce the one quarter ounce and the one聽half ounce versions of the same coin聽聽
[189]
and they'll be priced like the full ounce versions divided by聽the gold content with their own premiums as well聽聽
[196]
if you want to buy gold but don't want to pay for聽
a full ounce coin then these are great options聽聽
[200]
just as a word of warning though, the smaller the聽
coin the higher the premium percentage 聽聽
[206]
so you'll pay more for a 1/10th ounce coin than you would聽for a one ounce coin if you were to buy 10 of them聽聽
[210]
to get to the same gold content, so in normal聽
times when that one ounce coin has something like聽聽
[216]
a 6% premium, you might find that a 1/2聽oz will have an 8% premium 聽聽
[221]
a 1/4 might have an 11% and a 1/10 oz might be more like 15%聽
[227]
but again currently with everything going聽on, all of those coins are even more expensive聽
than that 聽聽
[233]
it's very common to see premiums as high as 25% on a 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagle right now so you will save money if you聽聽
[238]
buy the one ounce coin rather than two 1/2 ounce聽
four 1/4 or ten 1/10 oz coins... you get the idea聽聽
[244]
one other thing to note, the American Gold Eagles聽
are undergoing a design change later this summer聽聽
[249]
and that won't affect the price of these coins but聽
they will look a little different in a few months聽聽
[255]
now the American Gold Buffalo is a 24 karat gold聽
coin that means it's 99.99 fine gold 聽聽
[262]
you can see the color difference pretty clearly - it's a deeper聽yellow like you'd expect from gold
[267]
but it has the聽same outer dimension as the Eagle and also has the same $50聽nominal face value
[274]
it's very similar to the Eagle, and just a quick note on that face value - theoretically you can spend these at a store聽聽
[279]
they're worth about $50 in legal tender but that is聽
nothing more than a distraction聽
[285]
it shows that they're government-backed but you're not聽going to want to use these at the gas station聽聽
[291]
the US Mint does not produce fractional聽
buffaloes they did release some in 2008聽聽
[296]
but they're not available today, you'd have to聽
buy them on the secondary market聽- they would be very expensive
[299]
you will be able to find both聽a normal BU that means brilliant uncirculated聽聽
[306]
version of this coin - that's the standard bullion聽
coin - as well as a proof 聽聽
[311]
you'll be able to find proof state in both Eagles and Buffaloes - proofs tend聽to be a lot more expensive particularly if
[317]
you're buying them directly from the Mint. I would聽
say stick with the BU - this coin doesn't have聽聽
[323]
as deep of a history as the American Gold聽
Eagle, but it is very popular here as well聽聽
[327]
if you're looking to buy an American coin while聽
living in a country like Canada or a few others聽聽
[331]
that tax 22 karat gold coins well this would be聽
the obvious choice you'll find strong preferences聽聽
[338]
for that 24 karat gold in a lot of other聽
countries especially Asian countries as well聽聽
[344]
so you have a few things to consider with these聽
coins but mostly it's just going to come down to聽聽
[348]
which one you like - if you like the looks聽
of one coin over the other go with that coin聽聽
[352]
you'll not have trouble selling either one of聽
these coins if the need arises, but you will聽聽
[356]
want to consider that since the Buffalo is 24聽
karat gold, it is softer and it should be kept聽聽
[361]
in a capsule that will prevent it from getting聽
scratched or dented - I'll have some links to聽聽
[366]
those capsules in the descriptions as well聽
so you don't have to go searching for those聽聽
[370]
either of these coins they're going to be a great聽
option now the main reason a person who lives in聽聽
[374]
the U.S. would consider anything other than these聽
two coins really comes down to a logical reason聽聽
[380]
of price or an emotional reason like you just like聽
something else because there are fun alternatives聽聽
[387]
the reason i say that the price is really the only聽
logical reason though is that you typically won't聽聽
[392]
get back the premium in a sale so if you buy a聽
gold buffalo at 11% premium you'll pay about $1,944聽聽
[402]
today again that's based on a $1,750 spot price聽
give or take but if you sell that you might not聽聽
[409]
get much more than spot price back depending on聽
the buyer maybe you'll get a percent maybe two聽聽
[414]
percent over so you could see a loss of 10%聽
if you turned around and sold that coin back to a聽聽
[419]
local shop in a quick sale that's just something聽
to consider now spot price does increase over time聽聽
[425]
but you should always be aware that if you bought聽
a gold coin and turned around and sold it the聽聽
[429]
next day you'd probably lose some money now i just聽
think everyone should have an idea of what a sale聽聽
[435]
would look like before they buy and if you aren't聽
comfortable selling to a private buyer in person聽聽
[439]
or online through a site like eBay or Facebook聽
then a local coin shop is probably going to be聽聽
[445]
the most likely buyer that's not a terrible thing聽
by the way it's a little like trading in a car聽聽
[450]
at a dealership rather than selling it yourself聽
you won't get as much in the sale but it's less聽聽
[455]
hassle so when i say that you might only get back聽
a percent or two over the spot price of the coin聽聽
[461]
that would be your worst case scenario and even聽
that sounds a little harsh but the lowest price聽聽
[467]
is probably going to come from a local coin聽
shop again that sale will be very easy though聽聽
[472]
okay so with all of that in mind i'm going聽
to show you a few other options that could聽聽
[476]
potentially minimize any potential losses in a聽
quick sale or maximize the gains over a longer聽聽
[481]
time frame in other words I'm going to show聽
you some cheaper options and then I'll tell you聽聽
[486]
which ones I recommend all things considered so聽
let's start with the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf 聽聽
[492]
because they're a close neighbor that's going to聽
make them more popular here in the United States
[495]
it's also just one of my favorites now this聽
is another 24 karat 1 ounce pure gold coin聽聽
[501]
the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was the first pure gold聽
bullion coin available it was introduced by the聽聽
[506]
Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 and they've only聽
made minor changes to the design over the years聽聽
[513]
just like the Buffalo and the Eagle that I've聽
already shown, the year the coin was minted it聽聽
[517]
really doesn't mean much to its value but there聽
are a few aesthetic improvements and safety聽聽
[521]
features that have been added to the newer coins聽
in 2013 the Royal Canadian Mint added these micro聽聽
[526]
engraved marks and then in 2015 the Mint added聽
radial lines as well now that makes them harder to聽聽
[533]
counterfeit but it's it also gives the coin this聽
cartwheel effect when the light hits it just right聽聽
[539]
it's a gorgeous coin and they are popular聽
worldwide here in the United States you'll聽聽
[543]
pay a little less premium than you will for the聽
eagle or the buffalo and you'd get back slightly聽聽
[548]
less than a sale to a local coin shop there's聽
also a very specific tax law if you sell more聽聽
[554]
than 25 ounces of these Canadian Maple Leafs聽
here in the United States in one transaction聽聽
[558]
but if you're new to gold i'll just assume that聽
that doesn't apply to you you're not going to聽聽
[562]
have to worry about 25 ounces of these and if you聽
do want to know more about that tax law the 1099-b form聽聽
[568]
I do have a video on capital gains taxes聽
and I feel like this is getting really long so聽聽
[574]
this is probably a good time to tell you that聽
I've posted all kinds of videos talking about聽gold
[578]
that includes the video that I mentioned聽
being similar to this one and if you want to聽聽
[582]
continue down the rabbit hole be sure to hit my聽
channel page - again there are a lot of videos there聽聽
[587]
right other options the United Kingdom's Royal聽
Mint has put out a fantastic coin for a low price聽聽
[593]
they actually put out a few but i'm going to focus聽
on their primary coin the Britannia 聽聽
[599]
this has always been a great looking coin but in 2021 the聽Royal Mint added new security features that聽聽
[604]
make it incredibly difficult to counterfeit if you live聽
in the uk this coin and anything else from聽聽
[609]
the Royal Mint actually should be at the top of your聽
list since they're exempt from capital gains taxes聽聽
[614]
there now everywhere else you should just see聽
this as a great looking 24 karat gold coin that's聽聽
[620]
relatively well recognized and very difficult聽
to counterfeit so it is not as popular as the聽聽
[626]
U.S. Mint coins it's not as popular as the Canadian聽
Maple Leafs the South African Krugerrands or the聽聽
[631]
Austrian Philharmonics even, but any local coin shop聽
would happily buy them from you and with the new聽聽
[637]
security features they are gaining in popularity聽- on top of the aesthetics and new security聽features
[642]
the one ounce version of this coin can聽
typically be found at a 5% premium so聽聽
[647]
that means it is going to beat the price of just聽
about any other modern gold bullion coin available聽聽
[652]
another modern coin that would rival the Britannia聽
on price is going to be the Australian Kangaroo聽聽
[658]
I don't actually have one to show you so I聽
grabbed a Swan - this is another gold coin聽聽
[662]
produced by the Perth Mint and Australia actually聽
has two large mints but the Perth Mint is the more聽popular of the two
[667]
the Kangaroo can typically be聽
found for about that 5% premium as well聽聽
[672]
it doesn't have the security features that聽
Britannia has and it's again not as popular as聽聽
[676]
the other coins that I just mentioned here in the聽
United States at least but the Perth Mint is聽聽
[681]
well-known for producing very high quality gold coins聽
we're going to come back to some of those 聽
[685]
other聽options in a minute and both the Kangaroos and the聽Britannias are also available in fractional sizes聽聽
[691]
other options that you'd have would be coins聽
like the Krugerrand or Philharmonic that I just聽聽
[696]
mentioned they are among the most popular in the聽
world - you can typically find either of those coins聽聽
[701]
at a low premium and both are very well known so聽
if you were to sell them it would be very easy聽聽
[708]
there are a lot of other options like the Mexican聽
Libertads or the Chinese Pandas for instance聽聽
[713]
and people would complain if I didn't mention聽
them but those coins fall lower on my list of聽聽
[718]
recommendations for a few reasons - if you can find聽
either of them at a good price and have a specific聽聽
[723]
reason that you like them - whether that's for the聽
culture behind them or the local availability聽-聽
[727]
I would never rule them out so before we come聽
back to final recommendations I wanted to get聽聽
[733]
a few points out on how and where to buy the gold聽
coins now I always recommend starting at a local聽聽
[739]
coin shop if you have one normally you're going聽
to save premium since the online dealer's price聽聽
[744]
and shipping and credit card fees if you go that聽
route but local dealers have been struggling with聽聽
[749]
inventory lately and I think this is going to be聽
a short-term thing so if you do have a local coin聽聽
[755]
shop definitely call them and ask what they聽
have for inventory and then also ask their聽聽
[759]
price on something say like a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf聽that'll give you an idea of what their premium is聽聽
[766]
if they don't have inventory or they're asking聽
far too much for those coins or you're just more聽聽
[771]
comfortable buying online, you have a lot of聽
options there as well and in my last video聽聽
[777]
I mentioned APMEX, SDBullion and JMBullion -聽
all three of those are great options and I will聽聽
[783]
add links to those in the description but what聽
I've been finding is that with availability where聽聽
[788]
it is right now, I'm having to look at multiple聽
dealer sites to find what I want 聽聽
[793]
I've had good luck lately with SilverGoldBull and Bullion Exchanges, and I'm not going to go into any of them聽聽
[797]
specifically except to say that APMEX tends聽
to be the one with the most inventory, the quickest聽聽
[803]
shipping, and the highest prices, so if inventory,聽
shipping speed, and price are the three criteria聽聽
[812]
that you're working from, you'll find that you only聽
get to pick two at each site - some have inventory聽聽
[817]
and low prices but they're slow, some will have low聽
prices and quick shipping but they only have a few options聽聽
[822]
you might have to shop around a little聽bit
[827]
as you get online what you're going to find is that there are hundreds of different聽options for gold coins and bars聽聽
[832]
a lot of them are obscure enough though聽
that I wouldn't recommend them if you're new聽聽
[836]
you will hear people say that gold is gold but聽
I don't personally believe that based on past聽聽
[841]
experiences selling gold coins - I was very聽
familiar both with the local shops and with eBay聽聽
[847]
but my experience selling Sovereigns and 20聽
Francs Roosters was still a lot more work聽聽
[852]
than my experience selling American Gold聽
Eagles - just something to consider聽聽
[856]
if that doesn't concern you in any way, you聽
will be able to find old European coins聽聽
[861]
like Sovereigns and 20 Francs Roosters for a聽
lower premium than modern gold bullion coins聽
[866]
bars are another lower premium option that聽
I don't personally recommend initially聽聽
[872]
at least not here in the United States - buyers聽
are simply more skeptical about bars and while聽聽
[877]
you might hypothetically want to verify any聽
gold purchase whether that's a coin or not聽聽
[882]
I've never been concerned when buying a well-known聽
government-backed coin from a well-respected聽dealer
[887]
newer coins are just harder to copy and聽
there are serious penalties for counterfeiting聽聽
[892]
government coins - so to close this out with the聽
recommendation on which gold coins I think you聽聽
[898]
should start with, I'll say that there are ideal聽
choices and there are practical choices 聽聽
[904]
there are even some fun choices but in general you want to聽start with the most popular coins in your region聽聽
[910]
here in the United States that is the American聽
Gold Eagle followed by the American Gold Buffalo聽聽
[917]
and if you're buying in the first quarter聽
of 2021 though you're going to find that the聽聽
[920]
premiums on Eagles and Buffalos are higher than聽
10% and if that's the case when you're looking 聽
[924]
I would recommend considering one of the other聽
government-backed coins聽聽
[930]
you can find those at more like 5% premium, so if Eagles聽and Buffalos are too expensive I personally聽聽
[936]
look at Canadian Maple Leafs, if Canadian Maple聽
Leafs are too expensive, I look at Britannias聽聽
[943]
you can make a case for any of the coins that聽
I've mentioned here today and some people will聽
[948]
but if you simply don't know where to start I聽
would just say start with those four options聽聽
[953]
what I personally try not to do is just buy聽
randomly - 90% of my gold coins are American Gold聽聽
[960]
Eagles or Buffaloes, if I lived in Canada 90% of my聽
coins would be Canadian Maple Leafs聽聽
[966]
if I lived in South Africa it'd be Krugerrands and if I lived in聽Australia it'd be Kangaroos - again you get the idea聽聽
[972]
I just find that variety makes selling more聽
difficult so any of these less well-known coins聽聽
[977]
really need to jump out at me before I'll buy聽
them - I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy聽聽
[982]
them for yourself, just know that they will cost聽
more and potentially sell for less and if that聽聽
[987]
doesn't concern you well again you have a lot of聽
fun options 聽聽
[994]
all right so this was a longer video than most so i'm going to call it good right there聽聽聽
[997]
and like I mentioned previously I'm going to have details and links in the description if you want聽to know聽聽
[1003]
more about gold coins be sure to check out the videos on my channel page and also be sure to聽subscribe聽聽
[1009]
I'm going to be watching the comments so feel free to leave any questions you have or聽just let us know what your preferences are聽聽
[1013]
I know there are going to be differences聽
of opinion - if you found any of this at all聽interesting
[1017]
I would really appreciate it if聽you hit the like button that helps get the聽word out on this topic
[1021]
either way, thank you聽
for watching - I appreciate your time - take care
