[1]
- [Jake] And we're back with another episode
[3]
of "Before You Buy,"
[4]
the show where we give you some straight-up gameplay
[6]
and some of our first impressions
[8]
on the latest games releasing.
[10]
And today, we're talking about "Call of Duty: Vanguard."
[13]
That's right. They made another one.
[14]
We dove in on launch day and decided to take a look.
[17]
As a group here, we tackled the campaign,
[20]
some multiplayer, and the Zombies mode.
[23]
Bottom line here, right at the start:
[24]
"Call of Duty" releases every year.
[26]
It's an endless product at this point.
[28]
If you're not interested,
[29]
you're still not gonna be interested.
[31]
I still think they should have maybe taken a year off,
[33]
focused on their other projects, and obviously,
[35]
Activision is pretty messy right now
[37]
and needs to get their stuff together.
[39]
But hey, "Vanguard" feels like an in-between game.
[42]
It's not the strongest entry.
[44]
It's got some lame stuff,
[45]
and it's got quite a few nice things worth pointing out.
[48]
It's still fun, but we're mixed.
[51]
You might like it
[52]
if you are looking for some more World War II stuff,
[54]
at least.
[54]
Let's get into it, though.
[55]
The campaign footage here was captured on PlayStation 5,
[58]
the multiplayer footage here was captured on PC,
[61]
and the Zombies mode was on Xbox Series X.
[63]
So let's start with the campaign.
[65]
For us here, and me specifically, personally,
[67]
it's pretty strong.
[68]
You guys know I say it every year:
[70]
I love playing through the campaigns.
[71]
I try them all because they're always just fun little
[74]
popcorn roller-coaster rides,
[76]
like kind of just quick action movies,
[78]
and this one has some really, really good standout moments
[81]
and a couple of boring, bland missions in between.
[84]
The story revolves around a group of unique, quirky soldiers
[88]
from various countries, working together on a big conspiracy
[91]
at the end of the World War II
[92]
involving Hitler's fictional successor.
[95]
Each soldier is unique for different reasons
[97]
and are a little more over-the-top
[99]
than your classic World War II thing,
[101]
helping this all kind of feel a little fresh.
[104]
There's Paulina Petrova, AKA Lady Nightingale,
[107]
the bloodthirsty Russian sniper badass
[110]
who I think is loosely based on a real-world Soviet sniper,
[114]
who she killed like 300 people in the war.
[117]
Then there's Lucas Riggs,
[118]
the quirky, funny Australian explosive guy.
[121]
Then there's the American guy, Wade Jackson.
[124]
He's kind of just like a stereotypical hot shot ace pilot.
[128]
And the English Arthur Kingsley,
[130]
the kind of leader who is just super crazy smart
[134]
and knows a bunch of languages and is also pretty badass.
[137]
Along the campaign, they all have their unique tricks,
[140]
like being able to carry more explosives
[143]
and swap between them or being able to whistle and wave
[146]
and draw fire, nice little shakeups
[149]
to the campaign shootouts here and there
[151]
that really do wonders because some of the actual encounters
[154]
and areas are pretty straightforward.
[156]
Now, these characters,
[157]
not only are they all involved in the plot together,
[159]
but the game also jumps back to their time
[162]
in the middle of the war,
[163]
giving them a little character development
[165]
and setting up the overall plot, while also, of course,
[168]
giving you kind of like a little greatest hits
[170]
of World War II, featuring these fictional characters in it.
[173]
There are some cool Ariel battles as Wade,
[176]
who then eventually crash-lands in the jungle
[179]
and fights off Japanese forces.
[181]
Lucas is in the desert campaign,
[182]
giving you a little bit of desert Nazi action,
[185]
and these can feel a bit bland at times,
[187]
but the standout is Paulina by far.
[190]
Many World War II games have given you Stalingrad stuff,
[193]
and "Call of Duty" has done it a few times.
[196]
I can't actually think of all of them.
[198]
It's pretty cool, but this stuff takes the cake.
[201]
It's good sniper encounters,
[203]
a personal mission involving taking out a Nazi general,
[206]
and it's all cold, it's bloody, and pretty gory,
[210]
and the game gives you a few environments
[212]
where you creep around buildings super quick,
[215]
hiding under tables, going through vent shafts,
[217]
popping out, and shanking dudes.
[219]
It almost feels like a "Batman: Arkham" stealth environment,
[222]
just quick and deadly.
[223]
It's a nice new spin.
[225]
Is it realistic? No.
[226]
Is it fun? Yeah.
[227]
"Vanguard's" campaign isn't gonna change the world,
[230]
but the people who worked on it clearly gave a damn.
[233]
It's not perfect and there are a couple of lame missions,
[236]
but the story and characters are surprisingly memorable.
[239]
They even got Merry from "Lord of the Rings"
[241]
as an ambitious, but slimy and nervous Nazi,
[243]
and he's really good onscreen,
[245]
as well as all the other characters.
[247]
There's really a couple of moments like the Stalingrad bit
[250]
that are up there in my list
[251]
of best "Call of Duty" campaign mission moments,
[253]
maybe not number one or anything,
[255]
but they're up there, you know?
[256]
Like many other Call of Duties,
[258]
the campaign is not very long and it's not enough
[261]
to completely justify the full asking price, of course,
[264]
but it's still mostly worth experiencing
[266]
some way or another.
[268]
Now, on the multiplayer side,
[269]
it's pretty much what you'd expect.
[271]
There's plenty of stuff to keep you busy.
[273]
First of all, the gunsmith weapon thing is back,
[275]
and it's pretty much as awesome as usual.
[278]
There's something about the way it all flows,
[280]
how it all looks, and how satisfying it is to change stuff
[284]
and just how the stats really work and change.
[286]
It's just, it's something I've always really enjoyed.
[289]
Now, this time around, things are once again operator-based,
[292]
so in short, in layman's terms,
[294]
just kind of meaning you can choose a character
[295]
and then customize within.
[297]
There's all the stuff you'd expect.
[299]
There's skins, levels to grind out,
[301]
loadouts to tweak and customize with different perks,
[304]
swap kill streaks.
[305]
It's just the right amount of stuff
[307]
to feel like you can still really tailor stuff
[309]
to your preference.
[310]
Now, multiplayer is chaotic and as fast as usual.
[314]
To be completely straight up with you guys, though,
[316]
none of us here are completely qualified yet
[319]
to comment on the super fan-specific stuff
[322]
like balancing quite yet, just because it's really early.
[326]
If you're watching this later,
[327]
just know that we are talking about the game
[328]
the day after launch.
[330]
Players are very picky, and everybody has their preferred
[333]
"Call of Duty" multiplayer.
[334]
But so far, everything here feels fine.
[336]
It just feels a little bit too familiar,
[338]
but I'm curious to see how the community takes to it.
[341]
Some people will just prefer
[343]
the World War II-style weaponry and stuff
[345]
in their multiplayer, and you definitely got that here.
[347]
But you get the usual modes you'd expect,
[349]
nothing quite game-changing,
[351]
but there are 16 multiplayer maps, which is pretty nice.
[354]
Many of them are tight and amount to a lot of quick chaos,
[357]
but there are a few standouts.
[359]
What we really liked is that there are a couple of maps
[362]
from "Call of Duty: World at War" remade here,
[365]
and they're fun to jump into.
[366]
It's almost like we didn't quite realize how iconic
[369]
some of them were.
[370]
I can't believe we've been playing
[371]
these "Call of Duty" games for like a thousand years now.
[373]
But still, "World at War" feels like just yesterday.
[376]
Shout out to "World at War."
[377]
Anyway, I might seem a little cynical here,
[379]
but there's still plenty of fun to be had
[381]
with this multiplayer if you want it.
[383]
These games play like well-oiled machines at this point.
[385]
It's "Modern Warfare" from two years back in feel,
[389]
but with World War II.
[390]
It's fast, smooth, and with the fun,
[392]
more recent additions started in "Modern Warfare,"
[395]
like mounting your gun and stuff,
[396]
all with a little bit more noticeable destructibility.
[399]
Now, you will level up and you'll learn,
[401]
you'll get your adrenaline going, and you'll have some fun.
[404]
How long it lasts, that's up for debate,
[406]
but it's fun as usual.
[408]
And there are some really cool presentation things
[410]
they do here.
[411]
It's just slick as hell.
[412]
Now, the Zombies side of the thing
[414]
is really the negative of this package for us.
[417]
The one map available right now is called Der Anfang,
[420]
and it's pretty weird.
[422]
It's basically a combination of the Outbreak mode
[424]
and the standard round-based Zombies game.
[427]
It's objective-based, so you go through these portals
[429]
and complete just one of three different objectives.
[432]
Each time you complete one,
[434]
the round increases and more sections of the map open up.
[437]
Now, there are only three objectives:
[438]
Harvest, Blitz, and Transport,
[440]
and they get repetitive really fast, unfortunately.
[443]
Now, it also doesn't help
[445]
that there's no storyline or Easter egg
[448]
or anything like that.
[449]
They're gonna patch this stuff in later, apparently.
[452]
There's no Pack a Punch unlocking.
[454]
All that stuff,
[455]
this whole thing feels kind of unfinished and simple,
[458]
compared to what Zombie players are probably used to.
[461]
The changes made to gameplay in Zombies for "Cold War"
[464]
are generally well liked, I think,
[466]
but this feels too extreme
[468]
and just really lacking all around.
[470]
The way it works by breaking up the big map
[473]
with these smaller objective-based things
[474]
is probably meant to make the game more focused
[478]
and newbie-friendly,
[479]
but it just ends up giving the mode a lot of downtime.
[483]
Too much time is spent just waiting around for objectives
[486]
to start or for portals to get into.
[487]
It's boring.
[488]
The central map is very open,
[490]
so it's really easy to avoid the zombies,
[493]
and the smaller maps are so small
[495]
that there's hardly anything interesting about them,
[497]
and a lot of the time,
[498]
you just get teleported to a small section
[500]
of the main Stalingrad map anyway.
[502]
Also, it's worth pointing out that some of us here
[504]
never really ran out of ammo,
[505]
and using the starting shotgun,
[507]
was able to just breeze through many games.
[510]
The challenge just isn't quite there at the moment.
[513]
Even the intimidating new boss enemies
[515]
are just kind of a joke with the right weapon.
[517]
And now for one of us here,
[518]
the first game that they ended up playing,
[521]
they played for like over 40 minutes and exfiltrated
[523]
because of it just being kind of boring.
[525]
It seems like a lot of the times,
[527]
you rarely feel like you're in any danger,
[529]
which is crazy to say for a Zombies map,
[531]
and it's a total bummer.
[532]
Now, we've spent more time with the mode since,
[534]
but all of us here, our opinion hasn't changed much.
[537]
If you love the Zombies mode in other "Call of Duty" games,
[540]
I don't think you'll like what they've done here,
[542]
and I think more casual players
[544]
will get bored of this mode quickly, and it won't hook them.
[547]
So with this "Call of Duty" package, if you can't tell,
[549]
a lot of this stuff is subjective
[551]
or down to your personal preference.
[553]
The campaign, I thought it had some really cool moments.
[555]
You might love it. You might not.
[557]
It's not the best campaign they put out, but it's fun.
[559]
The multiplayer is very much "Call of Duty" multiplayer,
[562]
but once again, with a nice World War II spin
[564]
and tons of fun unlockables.
[566]
But maybe you're burned out.
[567]
Maybe you've been playing too much "Call of Duty."
[568]
Maybe you're sick of it. Maybe you're not.
[570]
And the Zombies, unfortunately for us, was just a bummer.
[572]
And the game does seem to be pretty divisive overall.
[574]
Maybe you might think we're missing the mark here.
[576]
I did speak to two people
[577]
that think this is the best "Call of Duty" in years.
[580]
At this point, the way we look at it
[582]
is that there are so many Call of Duties that release,
[584]
the fact that one comes out every single year,
[586]
there's gonna be one for everybody.
[588]
Everybody's gonna love one specifically.
[590]
"Vanguard" might be it for you, or it may not.
[592]
I'm saying the obvious here,
[593]
and I've probably taken up too much of your time,
[595]
but at least now you know what to expect jumping in.
[598]
This is a "Before You Buy."
[599]
You know how it goes.
[600]
I give you the pros, the cons, and some personal opinions,
[602]
and now we want to hear yours down in the comments.
[605]
Did you jump in?
[606]
What are you thinking so far, the multiplayer?
[608]
Are you as down on the Zombies mode as us?
[610]
And the campaign, I had some really fun moments.
[613]
Do you have a favorite moment from the campaign?
[615]
Definitely let us know.
[616]
Now, if you enjoyed this video
[617]
and enjoyed seeing this fresh gameplay up here
[619]
on the screen, clicking the Like button's all you gotta do.
[621]
It really helps us out.
[622]
We would very much appreciate that.
[623]
And if you're new, consider subscribing,
[625]
maybe hitting that notification bell,
[627]
because we put out videos every single day.
[629]
But as always, thanks for watching,
[631]
and we'll see you guys next time.
[633]
- [Woman] I do not know when he will make...
[635]
- [Woman] Russia? But Russia is mighty.
[639]
- [Woman] I don't want to argue.
[641]
But I think that you are being foolish..
