The Downfall of Crypto.Com - YouTube

crypto.com recently made some controversial聽 decisions the first one was a major decrease聽聽
[4]
in staking rates and the second one was a rework聽 in the card staking tiers as a result the staking聽聽
[10]
requirements for the jade green card ran from 10聽 000 cro all the way up to 25 000 cro and more than聽聽
[18]
doubled and the interest rate you would receive on聽 the staked cro went from 16 back to 10 as a result聽聽
[26]
the price of cro started to plummet i joined聽 crypto.com earlier this year and i was really聽聽
[31]
happy with the platform i was receiving huge聽 interest rates and their card was pretty nice聽聽
[37]
but the last couple of months something became聽 apparent the more crypto.com grows the less聽聽
[42]
attractive the platform is becoming they've聽 offered some great products throughout the years聽聽
[47]
i'm talking about the mco cards the interest rates聽 in the urn program the cro airdrops but all of聽聽
[54]
them got cancelled or reduced drastically if this聽 is the cost of growth is it really worth it then
[65]
to show you why i feel this way i'm going to go聽 over the history of crypto.com and it all started聽聽
[70]
back in 2016 when they were still a company聽 called monaco in june 2016 monaco was founded聽聽
[77]
as a cryptocurrency visa card company almost one聽 year later in may 2017 they launched their token聽聽
[84]
mco their ico raised an impressive 26.7 million聽 us dollars and it was listed on the 18th of may聽聽
[91]
getting listed on a major exchange is always聽 huge news for a token and the same happened聽聽
[96]
for mco in the middle of august the partnership聽 with binance was announced and immediately the聽聽
[102]
price shot up mco reached an all-time high of聽 27.10 us dollars at the end of august imagine聽聽
[109]
buying mco at that price but like everything all聽 good things must come to an end and that brings聽聽
[115]
me to the asset contracts the asset contracts聽 were an important part of the monaco white paper聽聽
[120]
every time monaco card users would use their card聽 monaco would charge a one percent licensing fee聽聽
[126]
all these fees were automatically sent to an asset聽 contract and all mco token holders had a stake in聽聽
[132]
that asset contract the white paper states that聽 at any time a holder of mco can redeem and burn聽聽
[138]
the mco for a share of each token held by the mco聽 asset contract the holder will irrevocably destroy聽聽
[146]
the mco and in exchange the mco asset contract聽 will transfer the underlying tokens to the holder聽聽
[152]
so basically you would use your monaco card to聽 spend bitcoin or ethereum for every transaction聽聽
[158]
monaco charged a 1 licensing fee which was sent聽 to the asset contract if you held mco tokens you聽聽
[165]
would be able to burn those tokens in exchange聽 for some of the bitcoin and ethereum that was聽聽
[170]
held in the asset contract so the next paragraph聽 states that the mco token will have a market value聽聽
[176]
at or above the assets contained in the mco聽 asset contract if the value goes below market聽聽
[181]
participants will be incentivized to purchase聽 mco and burn it this will then push the value of聽聽
[187]
mco back up so this was really a great incentive聽 for people to buy and hold mco it was not only a聽聽
[193]
token with a limited supply there was also the聽 asset contract which basically meant you could聽聽
[198]
burn your mco in exchange for bitcoin and ethereum聽 and this would be beneficial for the price of mco聽聽
[204]
it really was a win-win but out of the blue all聽 of a sudden the asset contracts got cancelled聽聽
[211]
there was an ama where the ceo of monaco聽 chris marzalek explained why they did it but聽聽
[217]
unfortunately that video has been set to private聽 so what got cancelled asset contracts you were聽聽
[223]
able to burn mco to receive tokens what was the聽 requirement in order to burn mco you would need to聽聽
[230]
hold mco what was the reason of the cancellation聽 changes in the regulatory environment as a聽聽
[236]
compensation monaco increased the card cashback聽 rates by 2 after the cancellation of the asset聽聽
[242]
contracts the price of mco went down rapidly but聽 shortly after it got announced that mco would be聽聽
[248]
listed on four major exchanges and the price went聽 up significantly in july 2018 monaco rebranded to聽聽
[256]
crypto.com this was in my opinion a brilliant move聽 the domain name crypto.com cost him 12 million us聽聽
[264]
dollars but it does have a nice ring to it if聽 you can say your company is called crypto.com聽聽
[270]
especially for customer acquisition chris marzah聽 gave the following statements crypto.com gives us聽聽
[275]
a powerful new identity in line with our original聽 vision to put cryptocurrency in every wallet聽聽
[280]
as a namer taking on is also representative of the聽 entire space it comes with a huge responsibility聽聽
[286]
to carry the torch we will strive to deliver聽 impact worthy of the name and build infrastructure聽聽
[291]
that enables growth of the ecosystem delivering聽 on the promise of a decentralized future and that聽聽
[297]
illustrates why the domain name crypto.com聽 is so important for people new to the space聽聽
[303]
if they stumble upon a company called crypto.com聽 they will definitely immediately be interested so聽聽
[309]
shortly after this rebrand crypto.com made a huge聽 announcement in november 2018 crypto.com announced聽聽
[316]
cro cro would become a new token of crypto.com but聽 mco would remain to exist on top of this all mco聽聽
[324]
holders would receive airdrops basically if you聽 held mco in your crypto.com wallet you were going聽聽
[330]
to receive a monthly airdrop of cro this was going聽 to happen over a period of 5 years the white paper聽聽
[337]
stated that ten percent of all the cro was set聽 aside for mco token holders so just like the asset聽聽
[344]
contracts the cro air drops were a nice incentive聽 for people to buy and hold mco if you held mco you聽聽
[351]
were going to receive free cro tokens but not five聽 years but only seven months later the airdrops got聽聽
[358]
cancelled the reason was in preparation for our聽 upcoming us cart launch we're also updating the聽聽
[364]
terms of cro token air drops so the users in聽 the united states were going to receive mco聽聽
[370]
visa cards but in exchange for this people had to聽 give up the cro air drops so what got cancelled聽聽
[377]
zero air drops if you held mco in your wallet you聽 were going to receive free sierra every month the聽聽
[383]
requirement for this was that you held mco in聽 your wallet and the reason of the cancellation聽聽
[388]
was the upcoming us card launch there were some聽 articles about the airdrops and the cancellation聽聽
[394]
on the crypto.com help page but for some reason聽 they've all been deleted a couple of months ago聽聽
[399]
they were still there the cancellation of the聽 airdrops didn't stop crypto.com from growing聽聽
[405]
a few months later in september 2019 they聽 reached the milestone of 1 million users and they聽聽
[410]
announced earn 3.0 if you held 500 or more mco聽 in your crypto.com wallet for a period of three聽聽
[418]
months you are going to receive 18 annual interest聽 on your cro this of course was really interesting聽聽
[425]
and the platform continued to grow it grew so much聽 that by july 2020 they reached a milestone of 3聽聽
[431]
million users and one month later they dropped a聽 bomb in august 2020 crypto.com announced the mco聽聽
[439]
swap all mco was going to get swapped for cro and聽 the community was outraged and there were three聽聽
[446]
main reasons why people were upset the first one聽 was the swap ratio for each mco that you swapped聽聽
[453]
you were going to receive around 30 cro according聽 to the community this was a little bit too low聽聽
[459]
crypto.com calculated this ratio in the price聽 difference between mco and cro of the last couple聽聽
[465]
of weeks the timing for this was quite unfortunate聽 because cro was at a really high point and mco was聽聽
[471]
relatively low the second reason why a lot of聽 people were upset was the token itself mco had聽聽
[478]
quite a limited total supply while cro had a huge聽 total supply for the third reason i have to go聽聽
[484]
back to 2018 when crypto.com announced cro chris聽 marzelag the ceo did an ama in that ama he stated聽聽
[494]
the following but at no point in time will there聽 be a swap from mco token to cro token so of course聽聽
[501]
people were really upset and i don't want to go聽 too much into detail about this swap but what聽聽
[506]
i can say is that i feel like crypto.com could聽 have handled it a lot better the mco swap left a聽聽
[512]
bitter taste in the mouth of a lot of crypto.com's聽 customers and from a customer's point of view it聽聽
[518]
did feel really bad but of course from a business聽 point of view it's totally a logical decision the聽聽
[526]
mco token was really beneficial for the users聽 while cro token could also bring benefits to the聽聽
[531]
crypto.com platform so from a business point of聽 view i can really understand it but of course it's聽聽
[537]
only beneficial for the business if the users are聽 happy with it in the long term i really feel like聽聽
[542]
it could have been a totally different scenario聽 if crypto.com was a lot more transparent and open聽聽
[548]
about this the main issue here is that there were聽 a lot of incentives for people to buy and hold聽聽
[553]
mco and it just kind of feels bad when it gets聽 swapped out all of a sudden so what happened聽聽
[560]
the mco swap mco got cancelled for cro reason聽 to get fully regulated as a business there's聽聽
[568]
not a lot of details regarding this subject but it聽 might have something to do with the label of being聽聽
[572]
a security but i'm not gonna speculate about this聽 as for the compensation there was a reduction of聽聽
[578]
the card saying requirements after increasing聽 them first plus on top of this there was a 20聽聽
[584]
crbo bonus when you swapped instantly this is聽 really important to note because the 20 bonus聽聽
[591]
incentivized a lot of people to do the instant聽 swap but if you did it your cro would get staked聽聽
[598]
on the exchange for six months this means that聽 you couldn't sell off your cro for the upcoming聽聽
[603]
six months this of course was good for crypto.com聽 and the price of cro and this finally brings us to聽聽
[610]
october 2020. a lot has happened in this month聽 and there were two major things the first one聽聽
[616]
being the reduction in the staking rates i'll take聽 the exchange as an example if you staked cro on聽聽
[622]
the exchange you would get twenty percent interest聽 this interest rate was reduced from twenty percent聽聽
[628]
to six percent which was a major decrease one聽 day later crypto.com made the announcement聽聽
[633]
that they listened to their community because the聽 community was really upset about this announcement聽聽
[639]
and they upgraded the staking interest rates back聽 from six percent to ten percent when we're talking聽聽
[645]
about the exchange on top of this news crypto.com聽 also announced new card staking tier requirements聽聽
[651]
basically the staking requirements more than聽 doubled if we take the jade green card for example聽聽
[657]
the initial staking requirement was 10 000 cro it聽 more than doubled and now you would need 25 000聽聽
[664]
cro in order to receive the card after all these聽 announcements the price of cro started to decrease聽聽
[670]
rapidly there's multiple factors you have to take聽 into account when you talk about the price of an聽聽
[675]
asset not only is this bad news the cause of a聽 price reduction but there's also the factor of the聽聽
[681]
mco to take into account a lot of people staked聽 cro on the exchange where you had to lock it for聽聽
[687]
six months so some of these people might say that聽 when their stake expires they're just gonna sell聽聽
[692]
off their cro which also will bring the price down聽 a good indicator for this are the syndicate events聽聽
[699]
reddit user harold fonda made this post about five聽 months ago and it lists all the syndicate events聽聽
[705]
and it gives some details about it if we see the聽 amount of users that participated in the bitcoin聽聽
[711]
syndicate event in the 2nd of july we see that聽 there were 15 000 people well if you look at the聽聽
[717]
most recent syndicate event the 28th of october聽 there were only 3 700 people that participated聽聽
[724]
this could be an indicator that there are less聽 people that have staked cro on the exchange聽聽
[729]
so since july the user base of crypto.com has聽 exploded but the syndicate event participants聽聽
[735]
are going down drastically i do have to add that聽 the requirements to participate in the syndicate聽聽
[739]
event have become a little bit more strict this is聽 also a cause for the decrease in users so what's聽聽
[746]
my opinion about all of this well i try to stay as聽 objective as i can but i just noticed that every聽聽
[751]
time crypto.com announces something big or if聽 they reach a new milestone something else has to聽聽
[758]
get cut examples for this are the airdrops that聽 got cancelled for the us card launch when they聽聽
[763]
reached 5 million users they decided to decrease聽 staking rates and so on so it's quite peculiar聽聽
[769]
that the more users crypto.com gets the less聽 attractive the platform is becoming interest rates聽聽
[775]
are starting to fall behind if you compare it to聽 competitors and the card's staking requirements聽聽
[780]
more than doubled i can understand that rules聽 and regulations are very difficult to work with聽聽
[786]
if you want to get regulated globally it's not an聽 easy task and of course it's also really difficult聽聽
[792]
to be profitable with a business but i just don't聽 think it's fair that you incentivize people to buy聽聽
[799]
mco or cro give them all sorts of rewards and then聽 just cut them all out of the blue a good example聽聽
[805]
for this is my cro stake on the exchange i staked聽 a little bit over 10k zero on their exchange to聽聽
[812]
participate in the syndicate events and to receive聽 the high interest rates so much has happened in聽聽
[817]
the last six months i'm talking about the mco聽 swap the reduction in the staking rates the car聽聽
[822]
tier requirements i just feel like i invested in a聽 product that i believed in a couple of months ago聽聽
[828]
and in just that short period of time it kind聽 of feels like a totally different product聽聽
[833]
and i'm not just talking about price i mean it's聽 cryptocurrency i know it's a volatile environment聽聽
[838]
i can live with that but i'm just talking about聽 the product itself a couple of months ago i聽聽
[844]
invested in a product that i believed in it聽 just doesn't feel the same it's kind of lacks聽聽
[849]
confidence or stability and if you want to ask聽 money from people i feel like that is something聽聽
[856]
you have to offer a major breaking point for a聽 lot of people was the mco swap i feel like if聽聽
[862]
crypto.com was a lot more transparent about聽 this it would have been a totally different聽聽
[867]
story and don't get me wrong crypto.com has done聽 great things in the crypto space um they have one聽聽
[874]
of the best crypto visa cards out there their earn聽 rates their interest rates were one of the highest聽聽
[879]
that you could get so it was really a nice聽 platform oh i almost forgot to mention their app聽聽
[886]
it's just one of the best user experiences you can聽 find in cryptocurrency in the most recent ama the聽聽
[892]
ceo said that they have a multi-year plan which聽 they are executing and they're sticking to it聽聽
[897]
he then referred to their growth in 17 18 and聽 19 thanking this plan so what was this plan and聽聽
[904]
what has happened the last couple of years well聽 crypto.com offered some amazing products the聽聽
[909]
mco card air drops the earn rates and so on聽 it just feels like the more that they grow聽聽
[916]
the worse they're becoming and i really wonder聽 if it's worth the growth then for the platform
[924]
so that was it for my video about the聽 crypto.com platform it was a little聽聽
[928]
bit longer than normally but i hope you聽 still enjoyed it i just wanted to share聽聽
[933]
um my experiences and how i feel about聽 crypto.com and all these recent changes聽聽
[938]
if you have any questions or remarks please聽 leave a comment i also have a discord server聽聽
[943]
where i talk about cryptocurrency and the stock聽 market i'll leave a link to that description if聽聽
