The Best Bagel And Lox In NYC | Best Of The Best - YouTube

Channel: Food Insider

[16]
Hey guys, it's Aly.
[17]
I'm here with a very special co-eater today:
[19]
This is my brother.
[20]
Charlie, good morning, guys.
[21]
Living in New York City,
[22]
we have access to some of the best
[23]
bagels and lox in the country.
[25]
But which holds the esteemed title of best of the best?
[29]
We polled our Instagram followers,
[30]
read countless reviews online,
[32]
talked to friends to see which places to try today,
[35]
so we could narrow it down and see.
[36]
[Charlie] Which is the best bagel in New York City?
[40]
Do you think we're gonna agree on stuff?
[41]
We don't agree on anything.
[43]
I knew Charlie was just the man for the job
[45]
of helping me find the best bagel and lox sandwich
[47]
in New York City.
[49]
Not only is he a connoisseur,
[51]
but he loves bagels so much
[53]
that he even proposed to his fianc茅e
[55]
at our first stop, Russ and Daughters.
[61]
First, if you see this line, it's crazy.
[64]
We gotta take a number.
[65]
So we are number 651,
[69]
and they're only on 629.
[71]
We've got a ways to go, but it's worth the wait.
[74]
Russ and Daughters is a fourth-generation family business,
[78]
and there's a reason it stood the test of time.
[80]
This place started in 1914. It's over a hundred years old.
[83]
It's gonna be here for the next 500 years.
[86]
So unlike most bagel places
[87]
that really just focus on the bagel,
[88]
Russ and Daughters equally emphasizes the smoked salmon
[91]
in addition to the bagel,
[93]
so that's what makes this place a real top contender.
[97]
Well, we got the goods, let's go.
[102]
All right.
[103]
So we can see the ratio of salmon to bagel
[107]
is about half salmon and then half everything else.
[110]
So Russ and Daughters is all about the fish.
[112]
I don't know how I feel about all of that salmon.
[114]
I feel like this could be a little overpowering.
[117]
But we'll see.
[119]
Mmm.
[121]
Whoa.
[122]
It's fantastic.
[123]
So what I really love about this sandwich
[125]
is that the cream cheese is on either side of the bagel,
[129]
so each bite is the perfect bite,
[132]
and it is a really silky, salty,
[135]
perfectly flavored lox,
[137]
so I love this.
[141]
From Russ and Daughters, we raced over to the always popular
[145]
Tompkins Square Bagels.
[148]
Tompkins Square Bagels makes everything fresh on-site.
[151]
Bagels are hand-rolled, kettle-boiled, and oven-baked daily.
[155]
This is my Saturday tradition.
[158]
It's the best bagel place in the city.
[166]
Perfect, beautiful.
[167]
[Aly] This looks delish.
[170]
Right off the bat, you can tell a huge difference
[172]
from the last one.
[173]
This is so much more bagel.
[175]
It's huge. It's cakey. It's really kinda fluffy and soft.
[179]
Listen, I'm done talking about this bagel.
[180]
I'm ready to eat it.
[181]
Three, two, one, go.
[188]
There's a lot of bagel here. There's a lot of cream cheese.
[191]
There's a lotta lox.
[192]
This is like the hangover bagel joint,
[195]
and you know about hangovers.
[196]
I'm hungover right now.
[198]
[Aly] We weren't the only ones who liked it.
[200]
It's my first time in the US,
[201]
it's my first time in New York, and my friend Kristen says,
[204]
"Well, you need to have breakfast like a real New Yorker.
[207]
Let me take you to a really good bagel place,"
[209]
and she brought me here.
[210]
[Aly] From Tompkins Square Bagels, it was time
[212]
to venture further uptown to Ess-a-Bagel,
[215]
known for its variety of delicious bagels since 1976.
[223]
So my aunt actually started the business over 40 years ago.
[227]
My uncle had a doughnut shop in Brooklyn,
[230]
and they weren't renewing the lease,
[233]
and he had three kids to support,
[234]
and she said, "Don't worry, we're gonna find something."
[237]
They combed the papers. They found a bagel store.
[239]
They said, "Doughnuts, bagels, they both have holes,
[242]
we'll figure it out."
[248]
Whoa!
[251]
It feels like every bagel place we go to,
[254]
the bagels get consecutively bigger.
[256]
This is definitely the biggest bagel yet.
[258]
This bagel doesn't have a hole.
[260]
It's just kind of a lot of dough,
[263]
maybe a teeny little pinhole, but it's just dough,
[266]
and I'm not complaining.
[268]
Also, I will note
[269]
that this is the first warm bagel we have come across,
[272]
which is my No. 1 thing I look for in a bagel.
[274]
I like when they are fresh out of the oven,
[276]
straight into the palm of my hand, straight to the mouth.
[279]
Ready, aim, bagel.
[284]
This one's special.
[285]
The dough is like, it's not that it's undercooked,
[288]
but it's really doughy.
[289]
Do I have food on my face?
[291]
No.
[292]
In my opinion, this is just kind of a perfect bagel.
[295]
So this is the real deal, this is a lived-in bagel.
[298]
[Aly] For our last stop,
[299]
we went all the way up to Absolute Bagels on 108th Street
[303]
to try the old-fashioned bagels
[304]
famous on the Upper West Side.
[307]
You cannot beat Absolute.
[310]
They're fresh. They have a wide variety.
[312]
Best bagels, best bagels!
[313]
I have never been disappointed
[315]
with any of the bagels I've bought.
[331]
Thank you!
[332]
Thank you so much!
[333]
First impression, I can tell right away
[335]
this is a more firm bagel, it's really...
[338]
[Aly] Dense.
[339]
[Charlie] It's dense, that's the word.
[340]
This is like a workout bagel.
[342]
All right.
[345]
Initial thought: I really like this cream cheese.
[346]
The cream cheese is good.
[347]
It seems like it's maybe more whipped.
[349]
It's a little lighter than the other ones.
[351]
[Aly] Perfect ratio, there's not too much lox,
[353]
like, spilling through the back.
[355]
[Charlie] This is why we live in New York,
[357]
is to have bagels and lox like this.
[359]
Hey guys, you don't need to go anywhere else,
[362]
these are the best bagels in the city.
[367]
I just wanna, like, smush this in your face.
[369]
Don't do it.
[370]
This is the best day of my life, hands down.
[373]
After visiting four of the top-ranked
[375]
bagel and lox places in New York City,
[378]
it was finally time to pick our favorite.
[381]
So before we tell you our all-time favorite bagel
[383]
in New York City,
[384]
first, there's a lot that goes into a bagel sandwich.
[387]
So we're gonna tell you our favorite bagel,
[389]
the bread itself,
[390]
our favorite cream cheese, and our favorite salmon.
[393]
So once we go through all the factors,
[394]
we'll see if we agree on what's the best bagel
[396]
in New York City.
[398]
Do you think we're gonna agree on stuff?
[399]
We don't agree on anything.
[400]
So first up, our category is the bagel,
[404]
just the bagel itself, you got that?
[406]
Let's get this bread.
[408]
Camera reveal.
[409]
Best bagel.
[412]
OK, should we see each other's?
[414]
Yeah!
[416]
Ahh, yes!
[417]
OK.
[418]
Same taste buds.
[419]
It was warm. It was doughy. It was delicious.
[422]
Category two, now what was your favorite fish?
[426]
Probably the most important ingredient
[429]
of a bagel and lox sandwich.
[431]
Arguably.
[434]
Again?
[435]
Ah, I had a feeling.
[437]
The people behind the counter,
[439]
they are students of the fish.
[440]
Cream cheese is the next category
[443]
that we are going to debate.
[444]
True story, cream cheese is my favorite food,
[447]
I'm excited to talk about it.
[448]
That's disgusting.
[450]
Three, two...oh!
[454]
Once again, Weismans in agreement.
[457]
They pack so much flavor into that cream cheese.
[459]
It was creamy, rich dairy.
[462]
And now for the moment you've all been waiting for.
[465]
I'm gonna sing.
[467]
No!
[468]
Our No. 1 pick, the place you send
[470]
your friends and your family when they visit New York City,
[473]
here it is. The winner is...
[478]
Let's see. Russ and Daughters!
[480]
Yes, of course.
[482]
I like all those exclamation points.
[483]
Of course. I loved it so much,
[484]
I added six exclamation points.
[487]
Russ and Daughters was by far the best for two reasons:
[489]
One, the fish, absolutely, the lox is delicious,
[493]
leagues above anything else we tasted,
[496]
and because of the charm. It's very unique to New York,
[500]
and it's the kind of place that you would want to show
[501]
an out-of-towner.
[502]
What kind of birds fly over the sea?
[507]
I don't know, what kind?
[508]
Seagulls.
[509]
What kind of birds fly over the bay?
[512]
Bagels!
