A Painful Debt Snowball Update - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
back when i started this channel聽 i said we had $220,000 of debt and聽聽
[6]
it was gonna take us about聽 three years to pay it off.聽聽
[10]
we're gonna pay off $250,000 worth of debt in聽 under three years because we're that awesome
[19]
well we did pay off that $220,000 in 40聽 months just slightly over three years i聽聽
[28]
wasn't taking three things into account that聽 were massively important to our debt payoff.聽聽
[34]
#1) when we first started i neglected to聽 include mauricio's undergraduate school loan聽聽
[40]
he was in his last year when i started my聽 channel and while we had stopped adding to聽聽
[46]
the debt i we weren't paying on it yet and聽 i didn't really take that into account in聽聽
[52]
my overall total number #2) my brother and聽 sister-in-law's school loans that we co-signed聽聽
[58]
on that we didn't know we would be paying聽 off for them and then #3) of course, interest聽聽
[67]
i know so if i have done the math correctly, which聽 i gotta say don't always do the math correctly,聽聽
[74]
but in total we are set to pay off three hundred聽 and eighty eight thousand three hundred and ninety聽聽
[82]
dollars and yes that number keeps getting larger聽 for two reasons one the longer we take to pay聽聽
[89]
it off the bigger the number gets and number two聽 when we refinance debts the interest rates change聽聽
[97]
so that impacts the overall number as well so the聽 total we have paid off to date is 245 828 which is聽聽
[108]
pretty freaking amazing until you start comparing聽 year to year so let's take a walk down memory lane聽聽
[115]
and we started this whole process back in april聽 of 2016 and that first year we were kind of聽聽
[121]
struggling a bit mauricio was taking odd jobs to聽 pay the bills and going to school full-time so聽聽
[127]
in 2016 we paid off $43,757 dollars worth of debt聽 and in 2017 the following year we paid off $64,793聽聽
[140]
worth of debt 2018 we paid off $79,681 now聽 that is the biggest number in this whole thing聽聽
[152]
we really pushed it to pay off that amount聽 and the following year we had ramifications聽聽
[160]
from that because i have said all along聽 if we cut down to bare bones we struggle聽聽
[166]
immediately after it's kind of like the聽 binge diet is what i always equate it to聽聽
[171]
if you cut absolutely everything out when you stop聽 you go off the chain and legitimately in 2019 we聽聽
[179]
did because in 34 months those first 34 months we聽 have paid off a total of $188,231 and that's pretty聽聽
[191]
amazing so in 2019 we paid off a whopping $30,574 and聽聽
[202]
2020 is looking to be on par with 2019 and to date we have paid off $27,077.
[212]
so over the last two years聽 we've paid off just over well by the time this聽聽
[219]
year is over about sixty thousand dollars and聽 the year before the last two years in 2018聽聽
[225]
we paid off 20 000 more than that in one year so聽 over the last two years we have definitely lost聽聽
[232]
momentum and looking back on it i know exactly聽 what happened we never actually increased our聽聽
[238]
minimum mandatories on the debts we have left聽 so back in 2016 we had nine debts total and huge聽聽
[247]
minimum payments and i don't remember exactly how聽 much our minimum payments were i could probably go聽聽
[252]
back and watch a video about it but i'm not going聽 to but i vaguely remember them being around 4 500聽聽
[259]
a month yeah that's a lot but mind you those聽 weren't the actual like minimum payments those聽聽
[265]
were our self-imposed minimum mandatory the amount聽 i had drafted with the bank for each debt payment聽聽
[274]
and we did that to kind of force ourselves into聽 making those payments and so we got into thinking聽聽
[281]
about it and if we forced ourselves back then to聽 make those payments because we know how we operate聽聽
[287]
we should probably do that again so聽 that's what we're doing now we're forcing聽聽
[294]
ourselves to make bigger debt payments so right聽 now our actual minimum payments we're paying on聽聽
[301]
two loans our actual minimum payment on the navy聽 federal credit union loan that was formerly the聽聽
[308]
usaa loan that loan the minimum payment is one聽 thousand like forty seven dollars and we will聽聽
[318]
start paying two thousand dollars a month on that聽 and then our other loan was formerly sally may and聽聽
[325]
that is the loan we cosigned on and so we moved it聽 over into our name because sallie mae is kind of a聽聽
[331]
pain in the butt and so we move that all over into聽 a loan with significantly better interest rates聽聽
[340]
and our plan is we plan to pay that off as quickly聽 as possible but our minimum payment on that loan聽聽
[349]
is 17 it's like 1649 or so and i have also set聽 that one at 2 000 a month because right now with聽聽
[359]
molina and schooling and all of that and having聽 to pay you know um just under 1500 a month for聽聽
[366]
molina for you know the school situation that聽 we have going on that's really the most we can聽聽
[373]
commit to right now so in december i'm upping聽 our mandatories to start and honestly that you聽聽
[380]
know four thousand dollars that we're paying聽 isn't as high as i would like but it will聽聽
[386]
go up as molina's child care again goes down so聽 let me walk you through what we have left as of聽聽
[393]
this very moment we have four deaths assuming we聽 make zero changes which is by the way not the plan聽聽
[401]
we're like all re-energized to pay the rest of聽 our debt off quickly so i expect changes coming聽聽
[408]
fairly quickly hopefully as soon as the schooling聽 situation shakes itself out but if nothing were to聽聽
[415]
change at all we have the former usaa navy federal聽 credit union loan and that is at eighteen thousand聽聽
[424]
two hundred and twenty eight dollars with聽 a projected payoff date of august 2021.聽聽
[430]
the second one we have is also navy federal聽 credit union which we moved over from sally may聽聽
[437]
and that is my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's聽 school loans that we're paying off for them the聽聽
[442]
ones we co-signed on and that is 48 749聽 with a projected payoff date of may 2020.聽聽
[453]
the third debt we have is a personal loan for聽 19 625 with a projected payoff date of october聽聽
[461]
2022 and we're not actually paying anything on聽 that should we you know finish our debt pay off聽聽
[468]
early then we'll jump right into it or we may wrap聽 that up in the sale of this house and the fourth聽聽
[477]
thing that we have to pay off is mauricio's school聽 loan which is fifty three thousand two hundred and聽聽
[483]
seventy six dollars and we'll begin to tackle聽 that in december of 2022 as we can because by聽聽
[491]
that point mauricio should be in graduate school聽 full-time which means he will have quit his job聽聽
[496]
and will be living on just my income so there will聽 be a stall between when we pay off our our last聽聽
[507]
debt and the the debt that we're going to pay off聽 for mauricio so the total we have left to pay off聽聽
[514]
is 139 878 dollars so right now with child care聽 the way it is i don't really see us making any聽聽
[525]
changes in the very immediate future molina does聽 start back to school school like in person school聽聽
[531]
in january but the governor here in virginia did聽 just shut some make some changes yesterday and聽聽
[540]
bring shut some things down especially in the聽 area that i live in the the you know the the聽聽
[546]
illness that shall not be made on youtube or you聽 know youtube demonetizes your video or puts it in聽聽
[553]
video purgatory that is really big here lots of聽 people are sick lots and lots of people who knows聽聽
[561]
what's gonna happen come january but even if she聽 goes back to school it's only two days a week and聽聽
[568]
so i don't know what the sac program will do for聽 her and how much they'll cost to keep it going but聽聽
[575]
should things change every little bit of change聽 x-ray will be reflected in our debt payment i've聽聽
[583]
learned our lesson mauricio's learned his lesson聽 and you know as our budget changes we're going to聽聽
[588]
reflect those payments and our debt payoff changes聽 immediately and you know mauricio and i have聽聽
[594]
always said we're a little more relaxed we don't聽 believe the debt payoff has to be a sprint if it聽聽
[600]
were a sprint we could have legitimately paid this聽 off significantly faster but you know we know us聽聽
[607]
and if we make this a sprint it won't go well for聽 us and we did try and make it a sprint in 2018 and聽聽
[616]
it backfired so on a side note you're gonna see聽 my monday videos i'm going to be using them to聽聽
[626]
kind of keep me in line the whole reason i聽 started this channel is to document our debt聽聽
[632]
payoff journey well it's never deviated from聽 that i really would like to get back into you聽聽
[638]
know here's where the month started here's where聽 the month ends up and you know celebrate my debt聽聽
[644]
payments along the way every single month so i'm聽 gonna on my monday videos i'm going to definitely聽聽
[649]
be doing you know our personal debt journey and聽 and everybody seems to enjoy those the most so聽聽
[655]
i'm gonna go ahead and keep doing those also聽 during the week i'm going to do some of the聽聽
[660]
more videos that i'm interested in doing like聽 the the fun videos you know like i'm going to聽聽
[668]
have a video cleaning out my freezer because i聽 did that and it was super fun and you know but聽聽
[673]
you guys may not be interested in those so i'm聽 not going to be releasing those to my audience聽聽
[680]
so what i want you to do if you are interested聽 in seeing more than like our debt free journey聽聽
[686]
then subscribe to my newsletter so that you will聽 be alerted to all of the other videos that i put聽聽
[693]
up and my newsletter it's not spammy in fact聽 i generally like write a blog post length like聽聽
[701]
thing i learned that that week it comes out every聽 other week generally and it comes you know when聽聽
[707]
you first download it you get a freebie and it聽 has you know a lesson i've learned my video and聽聽
[713]
blog updates and then a product that i'm loving聽 using at the moment like for example in my last聽聽
[720]
newsletter i gave like a step-by-step tutorial聽 on how to save tons of money using the rakuten聽聽
[729]
website which a lot of people don't know they use聽 the plugin to get the cashback but i'm talking聽聽
[735]
about going to the website and searching for聽 a particular item so i went through that like聽聽
[740]
step by step how do you do that and i used an聽 example of like a ring floodlight which causes聽聽
[746]
you by doing that you save 75 by using the rakuten聽 website and then you save an additional like 20 in聽聽
[755]
cash back so yeah it's totally worth it so since聽 you all are like debt snowball-minded like i am聽聽
[762]
i use the undead debt snowball calculator and聽 i'm going to point you to a video right over聽聽
[769]
here that i put up on how to use that if you'd聽 like to use that so i'll see in the next one
