Vitamin K1 vs. K2: What鈥檚 the Difference? - YouTube
Channel: Dr. Eric Berg DC
[0]
recently i realized that i don't have a video聽
comparing vitamin k1 to vitamin k2 so i wanted to聽聽
[6]
create this video to talk about each one vitamin聽
k1 has everything to do with blood clotting聽聽
[12]
and bone metabolism if you're deficient in聽
vitamin k1 you may have bruising or if you聽聽
[18]
cut yourself and you're bleeding and it's taking聽
a very long time to clot or heal up you can be聽聽
[24]
deficient in vitamin k1 also if you have if you聽
have bleeding gums if you're brushing your teeth聽聽
[30]
now that could be also vitamin c but it could聽
also be a deficiency of vitamin k1 so vitamin k1聽聽
[36]
is very very important to your survival because if聽
you didn't have it and you got injured you could聽聽
[41]
literally bleed to death internally or externally聽
so based on that our bodies have made sure that we聽聽
[48]
rarely ever run out of vitamin k1 and on top聽
of that there's so many different foods that聽聽
[53]
we eat that have vitamin k1 it's very unlikely聽
you're going to be deficient especially since聽聽
[60]
the requirement for k1 are not even milligrams聽
they're in micrograms so we need very small聽聽
[65]
amounts to satisfy the requirements now where do聽
you get vitamin k1 primarily from plant sources聽聽
[74]
now vitamin k1 is also in animal foods as well聽
but not in the amounts that you would get from聽聽
[80]
plants like leafy greens now just to switch over聽
to vitamin k2 this nutrient has everything to聽聽
[86]
do with calcium control it prevents calcium from聽
accumulating in your vascular system and it also聽聽
[95]
has everything to do with bone strength so it聽
keeps the calcium in the bone and it keeps the聽聽
[100]
calcium out of the soft tissues and vitamin k2聽
is primarily in animal products like animal fat聽聽
[107]
and it's also in fermented food like natto which聽
is a fermented soybean it's also in sauerkraut聽聽
[115]
but it's very very high in beef liver for example聽
or pork liver or pork proteins or chicken or beef聽聽
[124]
egg yolks soft cheeses so right聽
there you can see that our bodies聽聽
[132]
were meant to consume both plant and animal聽
foods based on nutrients that our body needs聽聽
[140]
now i realize that vitamin k is fat soluble so聽
the vitamin k1 in plants is very poorly absorbed聽聽
[149]
in fact you only absorb less than 10 percent聽
of it good thing you don't need very much聽聽
[155]
but it's very poorly absorbed but as a survival聽
mechanism what we've done to counteract that is we聽聽
[163]
just recycle the vitamin k1 so if you're not聽
consuming much k1 our body's going to take what聽聽
[169]
we have and keep recycling it over and over and聽
over now vitamin k2 is much better absorbed why聽聽
[175]
because it comes with fat and any time聽
you consume a fat-soluble vitamin with聽聽
[182]
fat you're going to absorb it more it's also聽
going to stimulate bile which is going to help聽聽
[188]
you absorb that fat cycle vitamin so it's a聽
combination of bile and then the pancreatic聽聽
[193]
enzyme called lipase that helps you break down the聽
food and absorb these nutrients more effectively聽聽
[200]
now what most people do including myself when聽
you're doing a salad for example you're going to聽聽
[204]
be using oil like olive oil to help the absorption聽
you're going to help the absorption of vitamin k1聽聽
[210]
now one thing you need to know about vitamin聽
k2 is that the bacteria in your colon聽聽
[216]
can actually make k1 from vitamin k2 so this is聽
another survival mechanism that if you have the聽聽
[225]
microbes in your gut you'll be able to make聽
more k2 from k1 if you're on a low-fat diet聽聽
[233]
that's going to be a problem to get this if聽
you have inflammation in your gut anywhere as聽聽
[238]
diverticulitis or colitis or crohn's any digestive聽
issue you're going to have malabsorption you're聽聽
[244]
not going to be able to absorb this one or this聽
one as well if you had your gallbladder removed聽聽
[250]
that could also create a deficiency because you're聽
not going to make enough bile in which case you聽聽
[254]
just need to take purified bile salts if you have聽
a fatty liver or your liver is damaged you're not聽聽
[260]
going to be able to make bile to be able to use聽
that to absorb these two fat soluble vitamins聽聽
[265]
as well if you're on a blood thinner聽
like warfarin that's going to block聽聽
[270]
k1 and you will have deficiencies of that聽
and as a side note if you are on warfarin聽聽
[278]
i have a video explaining the types of聽
vegetables you should be consuming which are low聽聽
[283]
in vitamin k1 if you're interested in doing the聽
diet that i always recommend which is healthy keto聽聽
[288]
basically you just eliminate the leafy聽
greens and you do other types of vegetables聽聽
[292]
i put that video right down below alright guys聽
so now you know the difference between vitamin k1聽聽
[297]
and k2 before you go if you have a question about聽
a product or you're new to keto and you want to聽聽
[304]
know how to begin keto or you're on keto and you聽
need a debug because it's not going as smooth聽聽
[310]
i have a keto consultant standing聽
by to help you this is just for the聽聽
[315]
people in the u.s hopefully in the future聽
we'll be able to answer everyone's call聽聽
[319]
but i put the number down below聽
so you can call and get some help
