How to Play the Short Ball in Tennis | 4.5 NTRP Lesson - YouTube

Channel: Intuitive Tennis

[9]
shamir so i gave you a bunch of short balls what聽 do you think about those are they hard to handle聽聽
[14]
some of them yeah some of them were聽 kind of hard because like you said聽聽
[17]
i thought i was there but then i聽 was still reaching and then you聽聽
[20]
had especially a tough time with聽 the low ones right with the slices
[25]
yeah you kept dumping it to the next i i聽 i just thought i would get there sooner聽聽
[29]
but then it was shorter than i聽 thought so i didn't run enough聽聽
[32]
yeah you know what the optimal way to聽 put away a short ball is if it's higher
[42]
because what happens on a lower ball let's say i聽 give you a slice and you try to come in and put聽聽
[45]
that away it's very difficult to put away because聽 when you hit the ball lower the ball will have聽聽
[50]
to travel on a curve it's going to go up and then聽 down there's simply less space when you're closer聽聽
[57]
up to the baseline and you can just kind of sail聽 it that makes sense if you're further back in the聽聽
[62]
court there's more space and the ball can fall聽 safely inside the baseline but when you're closer聽聽
[67]
then there's a danger of missing it long also聽 if you don't put any spin on it and you got聽聽
[71]
a low ball and you hit it hard you can miss聽 into the net that's what was happening to you聽聽
[76]
a lot when i was giving you the slices
[80]
the optimal thing you can do when it comes to聽 killing short balls is taking them higher so at聽聽
[86]
least the waist or above because now we can change聽 the trajectory right when we hit it at the waist聽聽
[92]
it's going to go up and down but it's not going to聽 go up and down as much as if it's below the waist聽聽
[101]
but optimally if the ball is聽 providing you with sufficient height聽聽
[104]
you take it a little bit higher聽 at around the chest height and now聽聽
[108]
you can absolutely destroy this ball because聽 the ball is going to be more of a downward聽聽
[112]
trajectory and it's safe from flying along聽 you can absolutely destroy a ball like that
[121]
so if it's a low ball think placement if it's聽 a higher ball think attack in other words don't聽聽
[128]
try to kill it when it's super low yeah yeah聽 i think to just get it in place don't go for聽聽
[132]
a winner because people go for a winner when it's聽 too low and they make a mess out of it so there's聽聽
[137]
a technique that's a little bit advanced because聽 you do need a lot of top spin on a super low ball聽聽
[142]
when you're moving up if you watch the pros they聽 do kind of like a hopping technique where they hop聽聽
[146]
on the same leg and that's to help the racket聽 go up rapidly on a low ball like that let me聽聽
[151]
show you so when the ball is super low and the聽 players are moving up they will hop like this聽聽
[157]
to help the racket go up because here's what you聽 got to do when you have a low ball like that you聽聽
[161]
got to provide it with tons of topspin and you got聽 to go very vertical on it and it's overall going聽聽
[167]
to be a more of a shot that you're going to play聽 out of your forearm it's more of a finesse shot聽聽
[171]
and so you super quickly is scoop it up with聽 topspin and provide it with a lot of rotation聽聽
[175]
so to keep it in so it can go in聽 inside the baseline okay oh yeah
[189]
and the reason why you want to do the hop step聽 is to help the racket go up because you want聽聽
[194]
to be very vertical here okay you don't want to聽 go like a regular topspin where it's it's more聽聽
[199]
at a diagonal this way it's almost like a topspin聽 lob where you're going straight up and to help聽聽
[205]
this swing path where it's going straight up you聽 can do like a little hop off the same foot and to聽聽
[210]
help the racket move up quickly okay so go back聽 i'm going to feed you super low okay and your聽聽
[216]
objective is to get as much spin as possible聽 that's what you need on a ball like that don't聽聽
[221]
think winner think get it in with as much spin聽 as possible placement here we go come on hop it聽聽
[228]
you overhit that go more more vertical聽 more steep more steep yeah do it again steep聽聽
[235]
i feed me a low one i want to show you how聽 to do it perfect oh samir what a feed man聽聽
[241]
that was good i had to really fight聽 for that one i couldn't really set because when聽聽
[246]
you set you can go like this there i kind of聽 did it on the run like this yeah but again聽聽
[251]
same idea you want to do a little hop to聽 help the racket go up here try it again
[258]
there it is a little bit more height more spin more聽 acceleration upwards the key is very vertical聽聽
[268]
more more this way shamir watch watch me again聽 i'm going to show you this way watch my racket聽聽
[274]
you see how the racket is going straight up don't聽 go like this like a regular topspin ball you got聽聽
[279]
to go straight up like a lob this see straight聽 up on this in other words it's on the same side聽聽
[285]
yeah you're not coming around as much聽 you're coming more on the same side this way
[301]
you know what i mean the same side all聽 right now imagine hitting this way so聽聽
[304]
normally topspin is going here okay okay don't聽 want to do that you want to go on the same side聽聽
[309]
same side this is the ball you go on the same聽 side here got it just here that's why i told聽聽
[314]
you it's more coming out of the forearm it's聽 like if i take my racket up up the net and go聽聽
[319]
no you're still doing it wrong don't come around聽 look i'm here i'm blocking you you can't go here聽聽
[324]
look you're gonna hit me you're going the聽 same side like this don't let this racket聽聽
[329]
go across this plane absolutely oh okay watch聽 there you go that's all you need let's go here聽聽
[334]
to here no okay it's a finesse shot聽 you're just lifting it up on the same side聽聽
[339]
same side where you hit it from huh rafa does it聽 all the time they all do it on this particular聽聽
[344]
shot jokovic does this better does it so don't聽 let it go no you can't if you do that you're聽聽
[348]
gonna overhit if you come around all the way聽 you're going to overheat yeah do it again you聽聽
[355]
hit it a little too much too much over on this聽 side stay off stay over here make it shorter聽聽
[360]
it's more of a finesse shot you don't need a full聽 swing go again come on there you go that time is聽聽
[367]
more yeah it's going to feel more like a flick聽 shot flick yes like out of here it's more out of聽聽
[371]
the arm the body's really not doing anything it's聽 already the arm it's all yeah do it again come on聽聽
[377]
come here there it is man that's it聽 here we go from here come on put it away
[384]
go again yeah you bring it聽 down a little more come again
[391]
good job nice that's excellent聽 shamir and now what about this one
[401]
okay that one actually was waist height so it was聽 a little bit easier you caught it well do it again聽聽
[409]
there's the hop nice you got it and a high聽 one again slam this one shamir come on
[417]
that is so good man come on hop hop聽 up ah you got lucky there you see聽聽
[424]
you didn't quite lift it enough you got lucky
[430]
nice one there good job samir and here's a high聽 one again slam this one so strong
[438]
another thing when it comes to these super easy聽 balls like the high floaty ones and they for聽聽
[444]
example come to your backhand side it doesn't make聽 any sense to hit a backhand because it's much more聽聽
[448]
difficult to put the ball away with the backhand聽 okay so you always want to try to run around those
[456]
like sometimes i hit a really good shot after聽 i hit that good shot sometimes the astro shot聽聽
[461]
brings you into the court but sometimes it doesn't聽 sometimes you get a great shot from here but you聽聽
[465]
have to kind of come up to the baseline and then聽 see how your opponent reacts and then you're聽聽
[471]
you're already at the baseline to get to the short聽 walls easier than if you're already back here聽聽
[475]
okay what you're talking about is um reaction聽 anticipation so i made a whole video on being聽聽
[480]
proactive versus reactive yeah so it turns聽 out that all elite tennis players even like聽聽
[485]
federer djokovic they play reactive tennis聽 so you can see this very easily when they聽聽
[491]
are waiting for the other person to strike the聽 ball they are waiting until the ball has been聽聽
[496]
struck and then they make a move it's very easy to聽 see just pick anybody on tv and the player who's聽聽
[501]
standing with the back to the tv and take a look聽 when they make a move it's always after the other聽聽
[507]
person has struck the ball so that's what i call聽 reactive tennis however there's an exception when聽聽
[513]
it's an obvious situation what is an obvious聽 situation let's say you and i are playing聽聽
[517]
i'll give you an inside out forehand like this聽 that's almost a winner and now obviously you're聽聽
[522]
going to be scrambling and there's very very聽 little chance that you're going to do anything聽聽
[526]
with that ball in that case i can be proactive and聽 i can start sneaking in and why would i do that聽聽
[532]
because most likely what's going to happen you're聽 going to go like this you're going to reach you're聽聽
[536]
probably going to dump it short and now if i'm聽 already in it's going to be a lot easier for me聽聽
[541]
to get the ball like that i can put it away much聽 easier yeah however and this is not something that聽聽
[545]
you have trouble with you actually do a really聽 good job with short balls but some players maybe聽聽
[549]
a little bit lower a recreational level 4.0 and聽 below and they will panic okay so they will see a聽聽
[555]
high ball for example they will run in like crazy聽 they will sprint up to a ball and now they end up聽聽
[560]
having the ball get behind them a little bit and聽 the other position they have to play the ball聽聽
[565]
like back here and all of a sudden they can't聽 hit a winner so it's really important that your聽聽
[570]
movement matches the situation so obviously if聽 you're in control the rally and the ball is coming聽聽
[576]
kind of high you don't even even have to sprint聽 to a ball like that you can just kind of gently聽聽
[580]
jog or these small little steps to the ball that聽 you're in position but it's unnecessary to go聽聽
[586]
too fast and put yourself in a situation where聽 you're overrunning the ball and jamming yourself聽聽
[591]
okay it makes sense again not something that you聽 have trouble with uh but this is very often the聽聽
[596]
case at the rec level the players panic and聽 they get in there a little bit too quick and聽聽
[600]
end up getting the ball behind them i'm so glad聽 you bring that up because you do got to dance聽聽
[606]
with the ball when you get that high ball you just聽 got to keep it in front of you you got to give it聽聽
[610]
have a safe distance for the ball and now you just聽 got to dance and track it and follow it and make聽聽
[615]
sure that once it's in the right place and you聽 set the balls in front of you and then you rip聽聽
[620]
it rip it for a winter yeah let me show you what聽 i mean so here go on a bass line and i want you聽聽
[624]
to do it wrong on purpose just for demonstrative聽 purposes now shamir run up there too quick and聽聽
[628]
let's see what happens here's a short high ball聽 running there too quick well see that's another聽聽
[633]
thing that happens to a lot of players that try聽 to take the ball right off the bounce yeah yeah聽聽
[638]
on a high ball it's completely unnecessary it聽 makes the stroke super difficult when you try to聽聽
[643]
take it off the balance so it's okay to actually聽 take it below the apex so you just come in there聽聽
[649]
wait for the ball to drop below the apex and now聽 you have time to execute your shot try not to rush聽聽
[655]
those high balls here try it again and do it right聽 this time let the ball come down a little bit聽聽
[664]
there you go see how comfortable that is yeah聽 it's unnecessary to take any additional risk聽聽
[668]
just wait for that ball to drop below the apex and聽 then you rip it actually feed me a highball i'll聽聽
[673]
show you what you should never do on a short聽 ball is this let the ball get behind you here聽聽
[678]
and that's what happens to a lot of players they聽 just run in there too fast by the time they get聽聽
[681]
there the ball is back here and now they're in a聽 horrible situation they have no strength back here聽聽
[686]
so you got do i always take sharapova as an example聽 you gotta have this super fast footwork and if you聽聽
[692]
ever watch sharapova for example swing volleys聽 she's moving her feet and she's like stalking聽聽
[697]
the ball like this she's moving like crazy and聽 she has unbelievable intensity yeah even on the聽聽
[702]
easiest shots ever another thing that happens shamir is that players are nonchalant on short balls聽聽
[708]
because they think the point's over they think聽 oh look it's a super easy ball yeah i got the聽聽
[712]
point already one that they kind of relax and聽 that's why i always use sharapova as an example聽聽
[716]
because pretend like the easiest ball is the most聽 difficult ball in the world even something super聽聽
[721]
easy like this have a super fast footwork like聽 this and the intensity has got to be out of this聽聽
[726]
world yeah because this is where you're going聽 to avoid all the mistakes that we talk about聽聽
[730]
today by having a lot of intensity with your feet聽 and being at the right place at the right time
[740]
well shamir the thing is that a lot of聽 players they don't practice these balls either聽聽
[744]
you know if they play from the baseline a lot they聽 just don't practice half court tennis yeah so i聽聽
[749]
would all my students i spent at least 15 minutes聽 of every lesson at the half court feeding them聽聽
[755]
high balls low balls swing volleys uh i i treat聽 this part of the court very seriously because it聽聽
[761]
is there's nothing more frustrating than playing聽 an awesome rally moving the other person around聽聽
[767]
and almost hitting a winner the ball comes back聽 super weak and then you miss that frustrating聽聽
[772]
uh half court ball did all that work to get the聽 meat so you got you got to get the reps in you聽聽
[776]
got to put yourself in all these different聽 scenarios and practice so that your body can聽聽
[781]
recognize it in math situations yeah and you can聽 be therefore more consistent here do a couple more聽聽
[786]
to finish off this video i want you to really聽 smack this one and kill the short ball shamir聽聽
[792]
you actually overran that a聽 little bit i did yeah do it again聽聽
[796]
it was right in the corner though see聽 that was a winner but i think it was聽聽
[799]
a little bit riskier than it needed to聽 be yeah you know do it again more margin
[807]
that's another thing that's important to聽 understand a length is really irrelevant聽聽
[810]
when it comes to half court tennis it's very聽 similar to the overhead you don't really gain聽聽
[814]
much from trying to go long if you hit it聽 hard and it's short with enough angle it's聽聽
[819]
going to be a winner anyway so angles are聽 are more your friends angles and don't worry聽聽
[823]
about depth so much when you're hitting these聽 shots that's more of like bass line thinness聽聽
[826]
that's baseline tennis and even there it's not聽 necessarily a right to try to go super long聽聽
[831]
but that's another subject for another聽 day when it comes to the half court shots聽聽
[834]
aim for just the service line area maybe a聽 little bit behind that corridor between the聽聽
[839]
service line and the middle between uh the聽 service line and the baseline don't go past聽聽
[844]
the middle of the service line in the baseline聽 yeah and it's playing with fire it's too risky聽聽
[847]
and worst case scenario if it's not a winner the聽 next shot will be the put away absolutely there聽聽
[852]
you go got a super easy volley all right聽 do a couple more and go put this one away
[857]
there it is and last one shamir
[862]
oh you let it drop a little bit you have to be聽 more careful take it just a tad higher here we聽聽
[866]
go come on i remember samir to hit the brakes聽 when you get there okay hit the brakes right way聽聽
[873]
before the ball you're gonna start slowing down聽 make this the shoe squeak okay i hit the brakes
[881]
okay maybe a little more angle but i like that one聽聽
[884]
but maybe more angle pull the ball聽 off the court a little more yeah
[890]
hey there it is easy winner easy winner聽 all right very nice from here good job聽聽
[895]
all right i got the racket tap down you do you聽 learned it man thank you shamir thank you聽聽
[902]
oh no thank you no i think聽 you're playing really well thanks
