WHAT IS USTD COIN ? STABLE COIN ? | COMODO TALK #3 - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
hi everybody and welcome to komodo talks episode聽
number three my name is alexa and my name is tim聽聽
[9]
and today's subject is usdt usdt is founded聽
by tether and i want to start with tether
[26]
tether is a cryptocurrency that uses the bitcoin聽
blockchain um to conduct financial transactions聽聽
[34]
and um basically it is packed to a u.s dollar聽
rate exchange rate um and yes it's back to聽聽
[46]
such as such currency as usd us dollar um japanese聽
yen and also euro the concept behind uh the teva聽聽
[58]
coin is to make it a stable coin so what does a聽
stable coin mean in a nutshell that means that the聽聽
[67]
volatility or the value of the coin does not go up聽
or down like other traditional coins like bitcoin聽聽
[74]
and ethereum bitcoin and ethereum are really聽
volatile um at the moment yeah last week um聽聽
[82]
bitcoin had an all-time high and i've got聽
the statistics here if you could just wait聽聽
[87]
for me one second the founders of the startup they聽
just wanted to create such a token that would be聽聽
[95]
rigidly packed to the dollar exchange rate聽
and tether is basically like an avatar聽聽
[101]
of of the us dollar oh yeah so as an avatar you聽
mean it's kind of like um in a cryptocurrency聽聽
[108]
environment yeah yeah yes yeah and it would聽
allow transactions like any transactions selling聽聽
[116]
exchanging buying something but it would be聽
equivalent to usd yeah and that's the whole point聽聽
[124]
is to keep it stable so that essentially if you've聽
invested in other cryptos and you want to say that聽聽
[133]
remove or withdraw your reward but you don't聽
necessarily know whether you want to put it into聽聽
[140]
fiat currency traditional paper-based currency聽
whether you want to keep it in a digitalized form聽聽
[145]
i think the idea is you put your money into聽
this usdt it stays within a digitalized form聽聽
[153]
at a stable value and then you can use it again聽
to buy or sell other cryptocurrencies yeah so it聽聽
[159]
stays in that sort of digitalized realm if you聽
will yeah and at the same time if you need to聽聽
[164]
withdraw your money uh in fiat money your earrings聽
yeah you you basically you can just contact tether聽聽
[173]
and uh exchange your usdt to usd yeah without聽
losing value because the value rates yes yes聽聽
[179]
doesn't it there was a there was聽
a point i want i wanted to say聽聽
[183]
to give you an idea of the sort of volatility聽
of other coins so bitcoin last week experienced聽聽
[189]
an all-time record high so bitcoin's the most聽
prominent uh cryptocurrency that we know of聽聽
[195]
and it went above eight thousand dollars for the聽
first time and this was last week um but now it's聽聽
[202]
dropped down below fifty nine thousand dollars聽
so that's a reduction of what nine thousand聽聽
[207]
dollars in a week so that's like an expression聽
of the volatility which means the uh sort of the聽聽
[216]
not insecurity but the the rate at which a聽
cryptocurrency's value can go up and down聽聽
[222]
bitcoin's really volatile and so are other alt聽
coins or alternative coins but usdt stays the same聽聽
[231]
yeah and nowadays the capitalization of tether聽聽
[236]
is around 62 or even 63 billion dollars and聽
it occupies the third line um in the list聽聽
[247]
of cryptocurrency yeah the third largest聽
cryptocurrency in the world yeah yeah yeah in 70聽聽
[255]
of all transactions with cryptocurrency the uh聽
one of the currencies would be usdt wow in 70聽聽
[264]
of transactions really one of the currencies聽
would be usdt so this is a really prominent聽聽
[268]
prominent coin with a lot of value right loads of聽
value um oh and i think we should note that usdt聽聽
[278]
is not not only the one stable coin there are聽
some others for example usdc from circle true usd聽聽
[291]
gemini dollar binance usd etc but the growth聽
rate of tethers capitalization is impressive聽聽
[303]
and i know other countries have a similar聽
sort of stable coin don't they like聽聽
[307]
great britain has a stable coin of its own聽
so it's a concept that is trending and has聽聽
[312]
yeah that has a lot of utility it has a lot聽
of great use the three common usages of usdt聽聽
[319]
are trading so cash to usdt and then you can聽
purchase other cryptos which what we've already聽聽
[325]
said lending so you can lend assets um and the聽
lenders aren't worried about the losses because聽聽
[331]
there is no volatile volatility with this coin聽
the value of the coin does not go up and down聽聽
[338]
and also cross-border payments so you can pay you聽
can do payments internationally within minutes聽聽
[345]
using usdt yeah it's more fast super fast that's聽
why it was founded to make it easier to make it聽聽
[353]
faster a point i really want to make though here聽
and i put this in bold in my notes is do not聽聽
[360]
expect value increase if you're investing聽
in usdt because that is kind of against the聽聽
[366]
point isn't it yeah because it's stable because聽
it's stable yeah because it's a stable yeah and聽聽
[372]
the whole point is to basically keep your assets聽
or your value in that digitalized form so then聽聽
[379]
you can either pluck from it withdraw or聽
you can use it to purchase other cryptos聽聽
[384]
that's the whole point of the usdt so聽
please if you're going to invest in usdt聽聽
[389]
do not be disappointed when you do not see a value聽
increase yeah against the nature of that coin聽聽
[397]
yeah because the purpose is different the purpose聽
of the coin yeah yeah it's its nature is totally聽聽
[403]
different to other traditional coins like聽
bitcoin you know if you're investing in bitcoin聽聽
[408]
the concept essentially is to try and make profits聽
isn't it usdt is just a safety to put your money聽聽
[415]
keep it there in a digitalized form we can use聽
it and maybe to exchange to other currencies yeah聽聽
[421]
yeah to exchange just to make it easier just to聽
understand the value yeah in in dollars yeah yeah聽聽
[428]
and and it's just a good so it's a baseline isn't聽
it it's kind of like a base yeah if that's how you聽聽
[433]
think if you want to think about it um so i've got聽
some other so i've got some stats here as well to聽聽
[438]
again just to reiterate that sort of volatility uh聽
btc uh btc sorry which is bitcoin fell by uh 6.9聽聽
[449]
to 61 000 recently ether fell by seven point聽
eight six percent to four thousand three hundred聽聽
[457]
and twenty and these are this is dollars us聽
dollars by the way uh teva staying put at one聽聽
[463]
dollar doing its job really well that is the whole聽
point and tether doesn't have its own blockchain聽聽
[469]
do you know about it like it's connected聽
to the bitcoin blockchain yeah but it also聽聽
[474]
works with other other currencies yeah with聽
other ledgers basically yeah so it's like a聽聽
[481]
buy ledger system so we've been waxing lyrical聽
about the benefits of usdt being a stable coin and聽聽
[488]
you can keep your coin in digitalized form often聽
pulling it out into traditional fiat form yeah聽聽
[496]
but there are drawbacks to usdt and i think聽
we're gonna investigate a few of them right now聽聽
[504]
so one of them is when we're looking about the聽
um the sort of insurance of usdt teva states that聽聽
[515]
usdt is kept in reserves but that's quite a sort聽
of ambiguous and um unspecified concept um because聽聽
[527]
for example on the website it says it keeps in聽
the form of cash cash equivalents short-term聽聽
[533]
deposits and other securities so it has a cash聽
equivalent it has a cash equivalent and apparently聽聽
[541]
it's around about 75 of their reserves are tied up聽
in cash or cash equivalents and that's go that's聽聽
[548]
according to the forbes website forbes.com and聽
most of this is in actually in commercial paper聽聽
[555]
now what are what is commercial paper commercial聽
paper is literally unsecured promissory notes聽聽
[563]
what our promissory notes they're essentially聽
professional promises so they are not fully聽聽
[570]
clad or ironclad professional contracts that are聽
signed their professional promises basically um聽聽
[579]
saying uh like a promise that i owe you聽
my company owes you some money essentially聽聽
[586]
okay so there is a little bit of or a聽
little lack of sort of security in terms of聽聽
[593]
the backing by cash or cash equivalents the聽
reserves are also tied up in other assets this is聽聽
[600]
around about 9.96 and what are these specifically聽
so we're talking about things like corporate bonds聽聽
[607]
which is essentially um proportionate uh聽
proportionate debt essentially that the company聽聽
[615]
sells to other people we'll give you a portion聽
of our debt and in a few years time we'll pay聽聽
[623]
a little bit more money to recoup that debt so聽
it's essentially offloading debt will give you聽聽
[630]
this bond say this bond is for traditional聽
uh for ease this bond is worth say聽聽
[637]
uh 10 us dollars okay give this bond to you聽
you pay us ten dollars but in five years聽聽
[643]
time you're gonna buy that back for say 15 so you聽
whoever you lend the bond or you sell the bond to聽聽
[650]
they do make a profit in the end but essentially聽
it's a way of like controlling your your assets聽聽
[657]
improving your situation financially and the聽
other aspect where um usdt keep their reserves聽聽
[667]
is from receivables from secured loans and this聽
is 12.5 percent of their reserves um this is quite聽聽
[676]
controversial not necessarily secure so these聽
are loans made to third parties but who are聽聽
[681]
they they're not specified on the website it's聽
not completely transparent and that brings up聽聽
[690]
a range of different questions so although there聽
are massive amounts of benefits to usdt it it does聽聽
[697]
have some drawbacks that we want to bring to your聽
attention some risks yeah there are some risks but聽聽
[703]
again that's the nature of the beast with all聽
aspects of finance traditional fiat currencies聽聽
[710]
smart uh smart technologies cryptocurrencies聽
there's always going to be risk when you're聽聽
[714]
talking about currency there's always an聽
inherent risk and you cannot bypass that 100聽聽
[720]
it's all about being informed from from聽
respectable well-established sources and聽聽
[727]
making up your own informed decisions basically聽
but now it's convenient and fast to use tether and聽聽
[735]
to trade yeah so probably it will stay in the聽
cryptosphere for some time or even even stay聽聽
[741]
for forever for long for sure i mean but it's in聽
an it's an ingenious coin isn't it it is it's so聽聽
[748]
useful it's so practical because it it literally聽
assists you as a trader in whatever you want to聽聽
[757]
achieve yeah it's kind of representative of the us聽
dollar in the crypto sphere yeah yeah it's really聽聽
[763]
worthwhile and and as we've said it's uh what was聽
it the top top number three in the top leading聽聽
[769]
cryptos yeah in the marketplace it occupies the聽
third line in the list of cryptocurrencies yeah聽聽
[775]
yeah and and that's relevant that's contemporary聽
standings right now fantastic well if it's number聽聽
[782]
three then it cannot be it cannot be that negative聽
i think and it has to be pretty positive thank you聽聽
[789]
