- What do you think about your life right now?
[3]
Like what do you tell yourself in the mirror when you
[5]
wake up in the morning?
[6]
- This is step one;
[7]
I have a thousand-mile journey to complete.
[9]
- This is Taylor Price.
[11]
She's a social media influencer,
[14]
and this is her American dream.
[19]
When you think of the idea
[20]
of the traditional American dream,
[22]
it probably conjures images of a corporate job,
[25]
an eight-hour workday, maybe a pension,
[28]
not making videos on TikTok.
[30]
But why not?
[32]
- When we talk about my generation,
[34]
kind of canceling out nine to five,
[36]
it makes sense because there's no sense of freedom.
[39]
- Although entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart,
[42]
spurred by the opportunities created by the internet,
[45]
many in Gen Z are finding interesting new ways
[47]
to earn a living and achieve independence.
[51]
These are stories of people
[52]
reimagining the American dream for a new generation.
[58]
'Did you know, you can invest
[61]
in more than just stocks? You won't believe this.'
[63]
- On her TikTok channel,
[65]
Taylor's built a large audience and in turn a business,
[68]
helping people learn about financial education.
[71]
But the life of a financial educator is not the life
[74]
she always dreamed of —
[75]
far from it.
[77]
- I get emotional talking about it.
[80]
Sorry.
[81]
When I was 10 years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis.
[87]
They say that I need major surgery
[89]
and that my whole life could be changed.
[93]
I graduated a year early from high school,
[95]
and so I went straight into Pre-med only to realize that
[99]
sitting like this for three hours in a lab,
[102]
was not something that I could like do with my life.
[106]
When I came to the realization that I can't do this anymore,
[110]
that's when I asked my mom, I asked her,
[112]
"What should I do with my life?"
[114]
And she said, "Why don't you try finance?"
[116]
- 'Prior planning prevents piss poor performance.'
[120]
- When I made that transition,
[122]
I'd no realization that personal finance and
[125]
corporate finance were two different worlds.
[128]
I think it was my second semester;
[130]
I started a blog kind of discussing this, like,
[133]
why isn't school talking about this at the younger ages?
[137]
Why is a major in finance not having this
[141]
within their curriculum?
[144]
The void that I'm filling — first off,
[146]
it's not just gaps or voids. It's like an abyss.
[148]
There's a huge demand for this financial education.
[152]
And the content creators are creating the supply of
[155]
financial knowledge.
[160]
- Taylor's blog quickly gained traction in her hometown.
[164]
Then a friend in L.A. told her about TikTok.
[166]
- And he said, "Taylor, you need to go on this
[169]
platform called TikTok, your message would explode there."
[173]
I took a look at the platform, I downloaded it and I'm like,
[175]
"Hell no, am I doing these like little dances
[178]
and stuff like that? Especially with my like
[181]
small-town neighborhood, no way."
[183]
And it was only until I went out to L.A. in December 2019,
[188]
January 2020, where I took that step.
[191]
I started posting on TikTok and boom
[193]
within like in my 10th video, I had a viral video.
[197]
And from there just TikTok has presented so many
[200]
opportunities in my life that I don't think any other social
[203]
media platform would have been able to give
[206]
in the time that it did.
[210]
My whole focus is I wanna make a difference within the
[213]
world of finance, and teach people that if you can control
[216]
your life with personal finances,
[218]
you can basically do anything.
[225]
The way in which I make money as a content creator,
[227]
it's through affiliate links.
[229]
It's through brand deals.
[230]
It's through sponsorships.
[232]
And then, of course, I do a lot of investing.
[237]
'Uh...no, I invest in the stock market.
[240]
There's other forms of investments.
[242]
- Uh...yeah, you can invest in crypto...'
[244]
- There is a lot of work hours too. Most people think, "Okay,
[247]
TikTok's a 15-second video or a 60-second video,"
[250]
but there's a process that goes into it. So it's not just,
[253]
"Hey, let me say whatever I want and throw it out there."
[255]
No, it has to be strategic.
[257]
It has to be analyzed. And it has to be well thought out.
[261]
So what I'll do is I'll take a look at any kind of trending
[265]
video, scripts, anything like that
[267]
on TikTok, and then I'll apply it to personal finance.
[271]
So I'm kind of figuring out the whole lighting situation,
[275]
then I'll get to recording, pull up the sound, and action.
[280]
Once the video is kind of done and over with, edited,
[283]
I'll put it in drafts, if I'm content batching,
[286]
or if this is something right now,
[288]
like I feel like I have to get on the trend,
[290]
then I'll click post.
[293]
- 'I like you have a cupcake.
[296]
Ew....'
[302]
- This industry is not for the lighthearted.
[305]
Yes, there are so many supporters,
[307]
but there is also so many haters.
[310]
It can really put a toll on your mental health.
[313]
It looks so fun when you can travel,
[315]
when you can get paid to do things,
[317]
but it can be a lot, especially working for yourself.
[321]
If you don't have the personality,
[324]
most people will fail.
[327]
You have to have an intrinsic motivation and drive to
[330]
succeed within this field.
[334]
I think when you're doing a work-life harmony and that
[337]
your work coincides with the things
[339]
that you love doing, that is
[341]
when you ultimately achieve that harmonious relationship of
[345]
fulfillment, accomplishment,
[347]
being genuinely joyful within life.
[355]
- The ideals of independence and opportunity
[358]
afforded by entrepreneurship have been
[360]
hallmarks of the American dream for generations.
[363]
The internet has transformed what this can look like,
[366]
creating a new class of businesses
[368]
and ways to earn a living.
[370]
This freedom has had a particular appeal
[371]
for Gen Zers, eager to define life on their own terms.
[376]
- Gen Z really cares about their lifestyles, their identity,
[380]
who they want to become. And I think
[383]
they're pretty healthy at kind of doing so.
[387]
What I do on a day-to-day basis is
[390]
fulfilling in itself.
[392]
Being able to really inspire, especially other young women,
[398]
to control their personal finances and allowing
[401]
them to feel that sense of freedom
[404]
when doing so is definitely rewarding.
[408]
I think my generation to begin with is like full on with
[411]
side hustles, full on with working for themselves.
[414]
And so the internet really elaborated on,
[417]
'Hey, there's these different things out there.'
[420]
There's accommodations for everybody.
[422]
The Earth is abundant, and it kind of made that kind of
[425]
volcano of everybody wanting to live this new American dream.
