Who are Newcastle's Prospective New Owners? - YouTube
Channel: Tifo Football
[0]
after 13 years of hostility and failure
[3]
Mike Ashley's accurate ownership of
[5]
Newcastle United looks like it's finally
[7]
over gone will be the hard-drinking
[10]
self-made billionaire who will likely be
[13]
replaced by very different owners the
[15]
public investment fund the sovereign
[17]
wealth fund from Saudi Arabia chaired by
[20]
the country's Crown Prince Mohammed bin
[22]
Salman and worth 320 billion dollars
[25]
there was near universal joy of the news
[28]
that Ashley's tenure was at an end of
[31]
course there's a long list of
[32]
transgressions to relegations the
[35]
traduce enough club legends like Alan
[37]
Shearer and Kevin Keegan the renaming of
[39]
some James's Park the sports director
[41]
Rina and 13 years of financial drought
[44]
that reduced the team to a life of
[46]
mediocrity many supporters felt that
[49]
Ashleigh had used the club as little
[51]
more than an advertising hoarding for
[53]
his retail Empire whilst putting in the
[55]
absolute minimum amount of investment
[57]
needed to keep the premier league's TV
[59]
riches rolling in and finally though
[62]
after years of embarrassment it looks
[64]
like Ashley is on his way
[66]
enter New Castle's prospective owners
[74]
Saudi Arabia has the second largest oil
[77]
reserves in the world so overnight the
[80]
purchase made Newcastle United the
[81]
richest club in the world
[83]
owned effectively by one of its richest
[85]
men yet most people have seen a
[88]
different face to the bit it's being led
[90]
by Amanda Staveley a British born
[93]
dubai-based dealmaker born into a
[95]
wealthy Yorkshire family Staveley has
[97]
made a name for herself thanks to a
[99]
bulging contacts book that today has her
[102]
trusted by some of the Middle East's
[103]
wealthiest men famously Staveley helped
[106]
broker the 2008 deal that saw Sheikh
[108]
Mansoor by manchester city and a few
[111]
months later Stavely and her PCP capital
[114]
partners helped broker a deal that
[116]
brought Sheikh Mansoor to Barclays Bank
[118]
the financial crisis was in full swing
[120]
and Barclays were desperately trying to
[123]
raise funds to avoid being part
[124]
nationalized Staveley brought Sheikh
[127]
Mansour to the table who invested 3
[130]
billion pounds alongside investment from
[132]
katar which saved the bank from having
[134]
to go cap in hand to the government
[135]
Sheikh Mansour walked away with close to
[138]
three billion pounds worth of profit
[140]
Stavely made 30 million pounds but she
[143]
felt that that wasn't enough
[145]
currently PCP is suing Barclays bank for
[148]
three-quarters of a billion pounds worth
[150]
of fees that they feel they are still
[152]
owed but Staveley will be more than just
[155]
a broker for this deal PCP is set to
[158]
take a 10% stake in Newcastle and will
[160]
likely run the day-to-day operations of
[162]
the club David and Simon Reuben who are
[165]
worth 18.66 four billion pounds and sit
[168]
in second place on the 2019 Sunday Times
[170]
Rich List will also take 10% but the
[173]
other 80% and effectively the club's
[175]
troop and official owner will be
[177]
Mohammed bin Salman known universally as
[180]
MBS last October Staveley flew to MBS is
[186]
500 million pounds mega yacht the serene
[189]
to resurrect a deal which at the time
[191]
seemed to be losing momentum
[193]
unsurprisingly for a man who controls a
[196]
bottomless pit of cash in the levers of
[197]
power in the desert kingdom the deal was
[200]
quickly brought back on track but this
[202]
time with the powerful backing of the
[204]
pif when MBS was anointed crown prince
[207]
in 2017 he was initially hailed by
[210]
allies in the region and the West as a
[212]
moderate and as a reformer who wanted to
[214]
quickly wean the country's economy off
[216]
oil dependency while loosening the tight
[219]
social and religious restrictions on its
[221]
growing young population here was a
[224]
young ally who loved Margaret Thatcher
[226]
and was inspired by the innovation of
[228]
Apple Google and Microsoft he liked to
[231]
play computer games and he had a taste
[233]
for the finer things in life he
[235]
purchased what is believed to be the
[236]
most expensive house in the world in
[238]
France for 300 million dollars in 2017
[242]
he spent more on a single painting 335
[245]
million pounds on Leonardo da Vinci's
[247]
Jesus Christ than he is now set to on
[249]
acquiring Newcastle United but he also
[252]
wanted to change Saudi Arabia's image
[255]
now there's long been criticism of Saudi
[257]
Arabia's human rights record it follows
[260]
an ultra conservative form of Islam
[262]
called Wahhabism there are heavy
[264]
restrictions on when
[265]
and a guardianship system that has
[267]
created a form of gender apartheid there
[269]
is precious little democracy and
[271]
virtually no freedom of speech reporters
[274]
without borders
[275]
2020 World Press Freedom Index places
[277]
Saudi Arabia 170 a--the out of 180
[280]
countries it also routinely executes
[284]
more people than almost any other
[285]
country in 2019 Saudi Arabia executed a
[289]
record 184 people some of them children
[292]
at the time of their convictions
[295]
including 37 people executed on a single
[298]
day however the Saudi authorities have
[300]
just announced a ban on the executions
[302]
of those convicted as children as well
[304]
as a ban on public floggings yet any
[307]
reforms have been tempered by crackdowns
[309]
and accusations of abuses in other areas
[312]
MBS has also been accused of a litany of
[315]
human rights atrocities from pursuing an
[317]
air war in Yemen that has killed tens of
[319]
thousands of civilians to jailing Saudi
[321]
activists including women who had
[323]
protested the kingdom's ban on women
[325]
driving to or during the murder of Jamal
[328]
khashoggi a prominent Saudi critic and
[330]
journalist for the Washington Post at
[332]
the Saudi consulate in Istanbul
[336]
NBS was never meant to be a king the
[339]
house of saud is a sprawling family of
[341]
princes and princesses all paid a
[344]
stipend depending on their proximity to
[346]
King Abdul Aziz known more widely as it
[349]
nurse out the founder of modern Saudi
[351]
Arabia he had 36 sons and 27 daughters
[356]
and it's estimated that the family could
[358]
number 15,000 members but the throne
[361]
only passes through the sons and it took
[364]
a series of deaths from sons and crown
[366]
princes who passed away from poor health
[368]
before the twenty-fifth son Salman bin
[370]
Abdul Aziz the governor of Riyadh became
[373]
King in 2015
[375]
MBS was King Salman's sick but favorite
[378]
son rather than travel abroad to study
[381]
in Paris or London or New York MBS
[383]
stayed in Saudi Arabia studied law in
[386]
Riyadh and became his father's advisor
[388]
staying by his side
[390]
when Salman bin Abdulaziz became King in
[392]
2015 MBS was rewarded at the age of just
[396]
thirty he was deputy Crown Prince and
[398]
given the plum state portfolio of
[401]
defense what followed was a disastrous
[404]
military campaign in Yemen after rebel
[406]
hootie forces who the Saudis accused of
[408]
being proxies for their great regional
[410]
rival Iran took the capital of sana
[413]
forcing the government into exile
[415]
alongside his mentor Mohammed bin Zayed
[418]
Crown Prince of the UAE and brother to
[420]
Sheikh Mansour and with support and
[422]
weapons from the US and the UK MBS
[425]
oversaw a ruinous air campaign and naval
[428]
blockade that killed thousands of
[429]
civilians and starved much of the
[431]
country the Hootie's still remain a
[434]
powerful force five years later and in
[437]
2017 he outmaneuvered his rivals to be
[440]
named Crown Prince soon enough the
[443]
purges began the most famous of which
[445]
took place at the ritz-carlton and
[447]
Riyadh overnight hundreds of prominent
[450]
Saudi businessman and royal family
[451]
members were seized and taken to the
[454]
hotel which had been transformed into a
[455]
gilded prison they were held for weeks
[458]
until many signed over large parts of
[461]
their fortunes it was portrayed by MBS
[463]
and his allies in the West as an
[465]
anti-corruption crackdown designed to
[467]
repatriate 100
[469]
of billions of dollars back to state
[470]
coffers Saudi Arabia's vast oil wealth
[473]
meant that graft was a significant
[475]
problem but one which had largely been
[477]
accepted especially in the West as a
[479]
cost of doing business it just so
[481]
happened that the people arrested were
[483]
mbss rivals during his rise to power
[486]
and after the Ritz Carlton incident mbss
[489]
power was almost unimpeachable in a
[492]
dewy-eyed profile of NBS by Thomas
[494]
Friedman in The New York Times he denied
[496]
that the move was a power crap so you
[499]
have to send a signal when the signal
[501]
going forward now is you will not escape
[503]
said NBS the crackdown on the super-rich
[507]
was welcomed in the kingdom and
[509]
encapsulated two strands of MPS's
[511]
approach as the New York Times
[513]
journalist Ben Hubbard wrote in his new
[514]
book MBS the rise to power of Mohammed
[516]
bin Salman his rise has been dominated
[519]
by two simultaneous drives he has
[521]
championed a vast social and economic
[523]
overhaul in tandem with an extreme
[525]
concentration of authoritarian power
[528]
meanwhile the rest of the world was
[530]
being charmed by MBS he became a key
[532]
ally of US President Donald Trump and
[535]
enjoyed a bromance with Trump's
[537]
son-in-law Jared Kushner he was the face
[539]
of vision 2030 a vast plan to
[542]
revolutionize the Saudi economy and
[544]
diversify it away from oil it was
[546]
announced that cinemas would reopen
[548]
after being closed at the behest of
[549]
religious conservatives in the 1970s who
[552]
believed they were Una's lamech concerts
[555]
and WWE contests were hosted as were
[557]
boxing matches and high-profile sports
[559]
events like the Italian and Spanish
[561]
super cups and is also thought that
[564]
Saudi money is the driving force behind
[566]
FIFA's new global Club World Cup FIFA
[569]
president Gianni Infantino welcomed MPs
[571]
to the opening game of the 2018 World
[573]
Cup sitting between him and Vladimir
[575]
Putin women were allowed into Saudi
[578]
football matches for the first time and
[579]
the ban on women driving was lifted yet
[583]
at the same time Saudi Arabia was
[585]
jailing and allegedly torturing
[587]
activists that spoke out against the
[589]
regime even on issues that MBS had taken
[591]
credit for luge NL has flew a feminist
[594]
activist who'd campaigned for the
[596]
lifting of the ban on women driving
[598]
rested whilst in the UAE and flown to
[600]
Saudi Arabia according to her family she
[603]
was tortured and threatened with rape
[605]
her brother now in exile in Canada gave
[608]
an interview with The Guardian he
[610]
claimed that her torture was overseen by
[612]
Saud al Kitani one of MBS is key allies
[615]
and advisors at the time she remains
[617]
behind bars the worst example however
[621]
was the murder and dismemberment of
[623]
Jamal kihachi
[624]
the saudi journalist had once been a
[626]
trusted palace insider but fled the
[629]
country fearing for his life he had
[631]
written critical articles about MBS and
[633]
Saudi reform which he continued to do so
[635]
for The Washington Post
[637]
when he visited the Saudi consulate in
[639]
Istanbul in October 2018 to arrange the
[642]
paperwork so that he could marry his
[643]
Turkish fiance her teacher Cheng as he
[646]
was seized tortured and then dismembered
[648]
with a bone saw now despite Donald Trump
[652]
running interference for MBS and the
[654]
Saudi vehemently denying they had
[656]
anything to do with cashew cheese murder
[658]
the Saudis eventually admitted that he
[660]
had been killed by rogue agents many of
[663]
whom were from MBS is inner circle I get
[665]
all the responsibility because it
[667]
happened under my watch MBS later said
[669]
in an interview with PBS Frontline sal
[673]
del Kotani was again implicated the u.s.
[676]
placed sanctions on him too but a soundy
[678]
court cleared al Kitani of any
[680]
wrongdoing that is the antithesis of
[682]
justice and an unacceptable lack of
[685]
respect to the victims said agnes Kalmar
[687]
the UN's Special Rapporteur on
[689]
extrajudicial summary or arbitrary
[691]
killings the CIA later concluded the NBS
[694]
likely did order the killing as the
[697]
Washington Post wrote quoting a US
[699]
official the CIA sees MBS as a good
[702]
technocrat but also as volatile and
[704]
arrogant someone who goes from zero to
[707]
60 and doesn't seem to understand that
[709]
there are some things you can't do
[712]
now NBS is of course not the first Gulf
[715]
monarch to buy a football club both
[718]
Qatar with the 2022 World Cup and PSG
[721]
and the UAE with their purchase of
[723]
Manchester City have invested heavily in
[725]
the game and they weren't interested in
[727]
profit they were after something else
[730]
reputation laundering sports washing and
[733]
the chance to offer an alternative story
[735]
about the country to the rest of the
[737]
world there is no greater billboard than
[739]
televised European football especially
[742]
in the Premier League and Champions
[743]
League and the Saudi state now appears
[746]
to want a part of them there's already
[748]
been a heated online debate about the
[750]
sale invoking Saudi Arabia's appalling
[752]
human rights record and although there
[755]
is no ethical dimension to the Premier
[757]
League owners and directors test they do
[759]
still have the power to stop the deal
[761]
the test was beefed up during the wave
[763]
of Chinese investment over the past few
[765]
years South Hamptons prospective owners
[767]
Yoji Shang had admitted to bribing
[769]
officials in China ten years earlier but
[771]
rather than do time he turned state's
[773]
witness
[774]
now that was enough for the purchase to
[777]
be held up and a new clause was added to
[779]
the test covering the failure of a
[781]
prospective owner to hand over all
[782]
relevant financial information and most
[785]
importantly to Newcastle United and pif
[787]
a clause that states that a crime
[789]
committed in another state even if not
[792]
prosecuted there could be a
[793]
disqualifying matter but that would
[796]
cause a diplomatic earthquake Saudi
[799]
Arabia is a staunch ally of the United
[802]
Kingdom MBS has shaken hands with the
[804]
Queen and her government and until
[806]
September last year when a British Court
[808]
halted the practice the country had been
[810]
sold billions of pounds in arms which
[813]
were then used against the civilian
[814]
population in Yemen billions of pounds
[817]
are also invested in London real estate
[819]
and here is a fund and a man willing to
[822]
invest money during the greatest
[824]
economic contraction in the country's
[826]
history
[826]
so Newcastle fans have a point when they
[830]
question the moral outrage over the
[831]
purchase of their club particularly
[833]
given the comparative reaction to BAE
[835]
Systems selling fifteen billion pounds
[837]
worth of arms and military equipment to
[839]
Saudi Arabia over the past five years
[841]
the priority for many was simply to get
[844]
Ashley out replaced by someone
[846]
anyone with the resources to rebuild and
[848]
burnish would have been sullied but the
[851]
Saudi takeover could just as much sully
[854]
and burnish the club's reputation if
[856]
football was to have a line in the sand
[858]
over the moral probity of its owners
[860]
you'd be hard-pressed to find a clearer
[862]
one than the Saudi state being allowed
[864]
to buy a Premier League football club as
[866]
Amnesty International wrote in a letter
[868]
to the Premier League chief executive
[870]
Richard masters on April the 21st unless
[873]
the Premier League pauses and look
[874]
seriously at the human rights situation
[876]
in Saudi Arabia it risks becoming a
[878]
patsy a willing dupe of those trying to
[881]
sports wash their abysmal human rights
[883]
records and no one alleges the intention
[886]
behind such a purchase with more clarity
[888]
than Jamal Co Shah jees fiance had
[891]
teacher Cheng case I can say that the
[893]
one incident that has hurt the
[894]
reputation of Saudi Arabia the most was
[896]
Jamal's murder it continues to it has
[899]
destroyed his reputation he's
[902]
desperately trying to use these types of
[904]
deals to repair his image if the UK and
[907]
the Premier League accept him it shows
[909]
other countries that he is now accepted
