[0]
we all need boundaries in our lives
[2]
non-negotiables that
[4]
keep us and those we love healthy and
[6]
safe
[7]
did you also know that there are three
[9]
non-negotiable singing rules that
[12]
every singer should learn to live and
[14]
sing by
[15]
and you ignore them at your own peril
[18]
soundcheck
[21]
g'day and welcome back to voice
[23]
essentials and i want to send a special
[25]
shout out to everyone who is currently
[27]
enrolled in my online singing course
[30]
thank you for all of your positive
[31]
feedback about the voice essentials
[33]
online singing courses
[35]
i'm so pleased it is helping you realize
[37]
your vocal dreams
[39]
now this learning to sing thing is most
[41]
definitely a
[42]
highly rewarding one for most people
[45]
unfortunately though
[47]
for some singers the process of learning
[49]
to sing
[50]
can become frustrating not to mention
[54]
it can be a costly one and more often
[56]
than not the
[57]
failure of their attempts at learning to
[59]
sing could be significantly transformed
[62]
by
[63]
simply establishing three non-negotiable
[66]
singing rules
[68]
the first absolute rule that i see
[71]
singers continuing to disregard
[73]
is the need for their singing to be
[75]
aesthetically appropriate
[77]
to the genre they are singing when we
[80]
talk about the aesthetics of the voice
[83]
we're referencing the tone resonance
[86]
and texture of the voice for example a
[89]
classical voice
[90]
is generally heard to have clean and
[93]
clear
[94]
without ant clear tone without any raspy
[97]
or breathy edge
[98]
whereas a jazz singer's voice may employ
[101]
husky textures
[103]
with resonant features that explore the
[105]
full gambit
[106]
of light and dark tones now of course
[109]
there are exceptions to every rule
[112]
but for the most part if you get the
[114]
aesthetic wrong
[115]
then your audience may not be that
[118]
excited by your performance
[120]
sure a jazz singer parading as an opera
[123]
diva while singing a bossa nova
[125]
may be fun and intriguing for one song
[129]
still i don't think a jazz audience
[131]
would put up with it for
[133]
a whole set now what do you think leave
[136]
your comments
[136]
below the second non-negotiable singing
[139]
rule is your singing
[141]
must be healthy we singers cannot
[144]
circumnavigate the fact that we
[146]
are biological instruments if your voice
[149]
is unhealthy
[150]
you'll always be singing with one vocal
[153]
fold
[153]
tied behind your back see what i did
[156]
there
[156]
seriously you can't sing if your voice
[159]
is stuffed
[160]
now there is a whole list of things that
[162]
you can be doing to keep your voice
[164]
healthy
[165]
i'll leave a link up here and in the
[167]
description section below
[169]
to a video that talks you through a
[171]
comprehensive list
[173]
of do's and do nots but suffice to say
[176]
your vocal health is your responsibility
[179]
funnily enough
[180]
the aesthetic of your voice will play a
[182]
significant role
[184]
in determining some of your vocal health
[187]
outcomes
[187]
the reality is some of the sounds we
[190]
contemporary singers make
[191]
will cost the voice more than others
[194]
take onsets for example a vocal onset
[198]
is the way your voice commences sound at
[200]
the level of the glottis
[202]
the space between the vocal folds now a
[206]
balanced or
[206]
simultaneous onset is the most healthy
[210]
and sustainable onset the voice can make
[212]
which is
[213]
why i orientate all of my students to
[215]
develop
[216]
a habitual onset from the first lesson
[220]
but if the contemporary singer only
[222]
employs balanced onset in their singing
[225]
they forego many vocal effects available
[228]
to them
[229]
now vocal effects that ultimately help
[231]
to communicate the lyrics narrative
[234]
more effectively and that's why we need
[236]
to learn the full range of onsets
[239]
including hard
[240]
soft creaky and pinched
[244]
[Music]
[250]
but here's the rub excuse the pun all
[253]
the
[254]
onsets beside the simultaneous one
[257]
will cost the voice more physically
[260]
sure do a creaky onset once and it's no
[264]
big deal
[265]
but if your voice is in the habit of
[267]
commencing its phonation
[269]
with habitually unbalanced sound then
[272]
it's
[272]
likely that your voice will experience
[275]
wear and tear
[276]
over time that might lead to vocal
[279]
health issues
[280]
both functionally and organically and
[283]
trust me
[283]
that's not a good thing sound check
[286]
[Applause]
[289]
so no matter what your aesthetic choices
[292]
may be
[292]
make sure that they are healthy and
[295]
sustainable
[296]
and that's our third non-negotiable rule
[298]
for singers
[299]
your singing must be sustainable when we
[303]
when we first start our learning to sing
[305]
journey we typically begin by learning
[307]
one or two songs
[308]
now for some this is a big task and
[311]
requires
[312]
a lot of energy but but ultimately if
[314]
you want to put your voice on stage
[317]
then you are going to need to develop
[319]
some vocal stamina
[321]
one of the best ways to do this is to
[324]
ensure that your aesthetic choices are
[326]
generally healthy
[327]
and therefore sustainable this is
[330]
especially true if you want to sing
[332]
the marathon that is covers bandwork
[336]
now singing three and four sets a night
[339]
is
[339]
really hard work and the only way your
[341]
voice will be able to front up
[343]
each night multiple nights a week week
[346]
after week
[347]
is if your voice has developed a robust
[350]
technique that is reproducible night
[354]
after night after night and the best way
[357]
to develop
[358]
said technique is to establish a workout
[361]
regime that lines up
[362]
with all three non-negotiable singing
[365]
rules
[366]
make appropriate aesthetic choices make
[369]
healthy vocal choices and ensure that
[372]
your vocal choices
[374]
are sustainable this video here will
[377]
help you to design a well-balanced vocal
[380]
workout
[380]
that will workshop every area of your
[383]
voice including
[384]
those onsets i mentioned earlier in the
[386]
video click on the video and i'll see
[388]
you again in a second i'm dr dan
[390]
sing well
