i read an article earlier today talking
[2]
about insourcing and outsourcing before
[5]
i go into my thoughts let's just confirm
[7]
the definitions outsourcing is when a
[9]
company hires an external third party
[11]
like a pr firm or an i.t solutions
[14]
business to complete a task or project
[16]
or take over a continuous function for
[18]
the company insourcing on the other hand
[20]
is when the company's tasks and projects
[22]
and continuous processes are all handled
[25]
internally even if you're hiring new
[27]
people or creating new departments is
[29]
the only solution the question that
[31]
follows is which is better for a
[33]
business outsourcing or insourcing
[36]
before i give you my answer let's cover
[38]
the pros and cons of both with some use
[41]
cases in case you want to skip all of
[43]
this to my answer you're welcome to use
[45]
the timestamp below the reasons why
[48]
businesses may choose outsourcing
[50]
assistance over in-sourcing tend to be
[52]
based on factors such as cutting out the
[55]
costs associated with hiring new
[57]
employees
[58]
workload reduction for internal teams to
[60]
prevent burnout enabling employees to
[63]
concentrate on core business functions
[66]
while external parties take care of less
[68]
critical duties having new needs in the
[71]
business and there isn't an internal
[73]
team who have the skill set to manage it
[76]
yet saying that the challenges that come
[78]
with outsourcing include the risk of
[81]
external parties controlling and dealing
[83]
with sensitive data communication is a
[86]
challenge with external parties it tends
[88]
to have to go through one or two
[90]
selected people on a team which can
[92]
sometimes create an inadvertent
[94]
bottleneck you need to be explicit in
[96]
explaining brand points and costs can
[99]
spiral if the project unknowingly
[101]
expands examples of the most common
[103]
cases for outsourcing that i have used
[105]
are payroll marketing functions such as
[107]
design image or video capture it support
[111]
and hr contracts management when it
[113]
comes to insourcing the idea is you
[116]
spend the investment internally and
[118]
expand your management remit to cover
[120]
this new business the reason why a
[122]
business would choose this option over
[124]
outsourcing is when it's more important
[127]
to have control over the decisions that
[129]
go into the task and projects existing
[131]
employees are already familiar with
[133]
brand messaging and brand experience and
[136]
won't need to spend additional resources
[138]
on training them communication to
[140]
external third parties will be too
[142]
tricky to manage and the risk of
[144]
sensitive data being mishandled is
[146]
something you're not prepared to take on
[149]
now before you rush to insource please
[151]
know the challenges you might face
[153]
insourcing can also become costly if it
[156]
requires hiring new talent or creating
[158]
new departments to be responsible for
[160]
specific tasks and projects existing
[163]
employees can also become burnt out if
[165]
they're assigned a heavier workload to
[167]
accomplish these projects changing a
[169]
course of action is harder when
[170]
considerable steps have to be taken to
[173]
prepare for change internally so you'd
[175]
better be certain this is what you want
[177]
to do examples of when in-sourcing is a
[179]
good option include when a company is
[182]
expanding into new markets but its
[184]
marketing team is unfamiliar with the
[186]
language in the new area maybe and so in
[188]
order to meet the needs of the new
[190]
market the company hires a new team in
[193]
that territory that speaks the language
[195]
and will create relevant marketing
[197]
strategies to address the needs in that
[199]
area another example is when a business
[201]
wants to expand its line of products it
[203]
can work with internal product teams to
[205]
brainstorm new ideas and bring them to
[208]
fruition instead of outsourcing the work
[210]
to an external unit another example
[212]
would be after scaling the business
[214]
hires new talent experienced in payroll
[216]
duties and creates an in-house payroll
[219]
department since it can get too
[221]
expensive to pay for this externally for
[223]
a large company now let's look at all of
[225]
this from the lens of a small business
[228]
i'll give you my thesis up front
[231]
i choose outsourcing before i choose
[233]
insourcing i'd say 85 to 90 of the time
[237]
in my early years in business i was
[239]
perhaps a bit green i had a very naive
[242]
image of what business building was i
[244]
understood it to be all about having a
[246]
bustling office with phones ringing off
[248]
the hook and people hard at work trying
[251]
to capture every lead that came into the
[253]
business with shorter and shorter lag
[255]
times between the moment the customer
[257]
first contacted us to when we delivered
[259]
our quotes every time i hired a new team
[262]
member i thought they were the one to
[264]
unlock the next level of the business
[266]
truth is as i indulged in this
[269]
insourcing heavy approach i got more and
[271]
more absorbed into just trying to manage
[274]
them all figuring out rotors signing in
[277]
and out pay rates commission
[279]
calculations conflict resolution and
[282]
training oh it was all relentless the
[285]
thing is what this meant was that i was
[287]
absorbed in doing busy work more
[289]
day-to-day management work rather than
[291]
where my attention was really needed
[294]
working on the business here comes the
[296]
crux of it until your business has found
[299]
a solid customer base and you can cover
[301]
your expenses two three times over there
[304]
really is no sense to be using your
[307]
entrepreneurial might on just managing
[310]
people choose outsourcing over
[312]
insourcing 8 out of 10 times i am a
[315]
strong believer that your startup funds
[318]
and your initial business revenue should
[320]
be used to cover the costs of
[321]
outsourcing services for your business i
[324]
like this approach for a few reasons
[326]
first
[327]
when you are repeatedly using outsourced
[329]
services you have to get really good at
[332]
explaining what you do and need this is
[335]
an undervalued skill that we get lazy
[337]
with when we have an internal team being
[339]
able to define the project and its
[341]
deliverables is massively empowering
[343]
later down the line next outsourcing
[346]
tends to have enough of a saving for the
[348]
early days but becomes a cost-saving
[351]
opportunity for you when the business
[353]
has grown past a certain point and then
[355]
it's more feasible to bring these
[356]
services in-house payroll is a perfect
[358]
example for this for a few people having
[361]
a payroll manager on the team does not
[363]
make sense for a team of 50 or 100
[366]
it's a different story next outsourcing
[369]
services lets you rethink and pivot
[371]
quickly if something isn't working
[373]
whereas if you have a newly recruited
[376]
team member or worse a designated
[378]
department in-house you are held hostage
[381]
by this decision and closing the
[383]
position or the department down just
[385]
because you may have got it wrong it's a
[387]
lot harder and worrying for the
[389]
remaining team members to observe
[391]
finally outsourcing lets you hire pros
[394]
into your business to show you the level
[396]
you want any future internal recruits to
[398]
have or exceed if you hire a team on the
[401]
books without knowing the difference
[402]
between a job well done and a poor job
[405]
you are in for a rocky ride for sure
[408]
outsourcing is like getting niche
[410]
consultancy services for each aspect of
[413]
your business i use my instructions and
[415]
work experience with outsourced talents
[418]
as the basis of my standard operating
[420]
procedures for those roles making me
[422]
feel prepared and confident for when i
[425]
do want to bring someone in as a
[427]
permanent member of the team saying that
[429]
with the trend of more and more people
[431]
wanting to be self-employed and working
[433]
on their own terms we very well may be
[436]
heading into a space where outsourcing
[438]
becomes a standard fixture in business
[441]
with the development of cloud servers
[443]
like dropbox and google drive and
[445]
communication platforms like slack and
[447]
asana it's now easier than ever to plug
[451]
a third-party supplier into your
[453]
business way more seamlessly than ever
[455]
before i'm curious to know about what's
[457]
your experience with outsourcing and
[459]
insourcing until the next one you've got
[462]
