Channel: Cortes Law Firm
[0]
today we're going to talk about four
[1]
books that i think are a great place
[3]
to start your estate planning journey
[6]
let's jump right in
[8]
in this video up here a couple weeks ago
[9]
i talked about how
[11]
important it is to educate yourself
[14]
before you start your estate planning
[15]
journey
[16]
i truly believe education is a key to a
[19]
great
[20]
estate plan now in the video i just
[22]
talked about from a couple weeks ago
[24]
i briefly mentioned these four books but
[27]
a lot of you have been clicking on those
[29]
links that i put down in that video
[30]
so that gave me the idea to talk about
[33]
each one of these books
[34]
a little bit more in depth so that
[36]
you'll have a better
[37]
understanding and you can see which one
[40]
might be actually helpful for you
[42]
especially the first three deals
[44]
specifically with estate planning
[46]
the last one deals with what happens
[48]
after somebody passes away or you're
[50]
helping to administer somebody's estate
[52]
they are all four really good books that
[53]
i would recommend to you now i do have
[55]
to have full disclosure that if you use
[57]
one of our links
[58]
below that was our amazon affiliate link
[60]
so our channel will get a little bit of
[62]
money if you
[63]
end up buying one of the books but
[64]
here's the thing guys if you
[66]
live in oklahoma city or in the oklahoma
[68]
city metro area
[70]
come by our office and i will lend you
[73]
our copies of the books you got to bring
[75]
it back it'll be just like a little
[76]
library
[77]
but if you don't want to spend the money
[79]
come by our office and i will lend you
[81]
our copy
[82]
of these four books for you to take home
[84]
and read to educate yourself
[86]
and get a better idea of what you need
[88]
to do for your estate planning
[90]
let's talk about the first book and it's
[92]
called estate planning for dummies
[94]
now i have to admit right off the bat i
[96]
really
[97]
really didn't like these for dummies
[99]
books for a very long time
[101]
but i have read a few of them including
[104]
this one and
[105]
they really do break down things into
[107]
very basic terms
[109]
that are easy to understand so i've
[111]
actually ended up becoming a big fan of
[113]
them
[113]
even though i really didn't like the
[114]
title i don't know i just i just felt
[116]
kind of
[117]
insulted buying a book that was for
[119]
dummies but
[120]
estate planning for dummies is a good
[122]
book that i could recommend to you
[124]
to help you on your journey some of the
[126]
topics that estate planning for dummies
[128]
goes over
[129]
how to really just put your estate plan
[131]
in order what do you need to do
[132]
what do you have to do to minimize
[133]
estate planning taxes if that's
[135]
something that's important how to write
[136]
a proper will
[138]
deal with probate set up trusts and make
[141]
sure your insurance policies are
[143]
structured
[144]
correctly to protect you and your family
[146]
and the book also talks a little about
[148]
special kinds of trusts that you really
[151]
should be paying attention to
[152]
if they apply to you and one of them
[155]
like we just talked about in our lady
[156]
gaga video
[157]
up here is what to do with your pets
[160]
you need to have a pet trust in place if
[162]
you truly love
[164]
your little furry friend and you want to
[166]
make sure that they're taken care of
[168]
no matter what happens to you whether
[169]
you're incapacitated or you ultimately
[171]
pass away you want to make sure
[173]
that your little dog cat turtle bird
[176]
whatever it is
[177]
is taken care of estate planning for
[178]
dummies really breaks down
[181]
estate planning into very very basic
[183]
terms
[184]
and is a great place to start your
[187]
estate planning journey so i would
[188]
recommend that book
[189]
the next book that i really like is this
[191]
one aging in the right place
[193]
this is a great book that explores all
[195]
of the many options that are now
[197]
available to
[198]
people getting older ranging from just
[200]
staying in your current home
[201]
to moving someplace that is specially
[203]
tailored to match your lifestyle and
[206]
match your needs
[207]
of what you want to where you want to be
[209]
this is a great book
[211]
for planning and giving you ideas and
[213]
out of
[214]
all of the books this one aging in the
[216]
right place is probably one of my
[218]
favorites
[219]
the next book is called estate planning
[221]
basics
[222]
and this book is very similar to estate
[225]
planning for dummies
[226]
but it goes into how to make a will or a
[228]
living trust how to name a guardian how
[230]
to pick a guardian for your children
[232]
or for yourself how to avoid probate the
[235]
steps are for
[235]
choosing an executor or a guardian a
[238]
power of attorney and really preparing
[240]
your healthcare
[241]
directives this really is a great book
[243]
at just getting down to the basics
[245]
of what you need to do for estate
[247]
planning i really like it if you have a
[249]
choice between estate planning for
[250]
dummies and this book estate planning
[252]
basics
[253]
i would probably get estate planning for
[255]
dummies i just think it is
[256]
a lot better laid out and in more
[259]
understandable terms
[260]
all three of these books are a great
[262]
place to start
[263]
for you to get a basic understanding of
[266]
estate planning now just to be clear i'm
[269]
not saying that once you read these
[270]
three books
[271]
you'll be able to create your own estate
[273]
planning these books give you a basic
[276]
understanding
[277]
of what you need to do for an effective
[279]
estate plan
[280]
and i can tell you from over 20 years of
[282]
practice
[283]
that when somebody comes into our office
[285]
and they have a basic understanding of
[287]
what we're going to talk about
[288]
it makes the process go much smoother
[290]
and it helps them get to their goals
[293]
in a much quicker time now we don't mind
[295]
visiting with you
[296]
and explaining all of this to you it'll
[299]
be less frustrating for you if you have
[301]
a better understanding
[302]
before you come to our office or your
[304]
estate planning
[305]
attorney's office and understand what
[308]
the terms
[309]
are and what you're actually looking for
[311]
in your estate plan
[312]
once you have a basic understanding of
[314]
what you want in your estate plan
[315]
then we can create a plan that is custom
[319]
tailored
[319]
to what you need now the fourth book
[322]
that i recommend is part of the for
[323]
dummies
[324]
series and it's called estate and trust
[326]
administration for dummies
[328]
i really like this book a lot and like i
[330]
said this is not the same as estate
[332]
planning
[333]
for dummies this is what happens
[334]
afterwards and it gives you guidance on
[336]
the probate process
[338]
advice on how to liquidate assets for
[340]
your loved one your duties as a trustee
[342]
or as an executor
[343]
filing returns for relatives and the
[346]
pitfalls that you
[347]
really need to avoid as an administrator
[349]
of an estate tips for finding an expert
[351]
to help you along the way
[353]
this book really gives you a lot of
[354]
guidance on what to do once your loved
[356]
one has passed away
[357]
or even if you're just administering
[359]
their estate because they're
[360]
incapacitated and you're the successor
[362]
trustee
[362]
you're the incapacity trustee this book
[365]
is a lot of help for that and it's a
[367]
good starter
[368]
again before you go in to talk with your
[370]
estate planning attorney or your loved
[371]
ones estate planning attorney
[373]
for guidance on exactly what to do it
[375]
will help you familiarize with the terms
[377]
and give you a better understanding of
[378]
what is going on in your loved one's
[380]
estate
[381]
first three books are what you can do to
[384]
create the
[384]
ultimate estate plan for you and
[387]
the last book is what you need to do and
[390]
what you need to know to administer a
[392]
loved one's estate i'll provide
[394]
links to all four of these books in the
[396]
comment and in the description section
[398]
below
[398]
more than anything i just recommend you
[400]

[402]
on estate planning and again if you live
[404]
in the oklahoma city metro area
[406]
