Being a responsible organisation involves聽 seeking to minimize the harms that one creates.聽聽
[11]
Hi my name's Steve Brammer, I'm the Dean of the聽 School of Management here at the University of聽聽
[15]
Bath. Corporate social responsibility starts聽 from the idea that organisations don't exist聽聽
[19]
in a vacuum. That organisations should engage with,聽 should learn, from should try and understand the聽聽
[26]
wants and needs and perspectives of their various聽 stakeholders. It's essentially voluntary, it's about聽聽
[32]
organisations at least meeting and often exceeding聽 legal requirements when it comes to things like聽聽
[37]
employment regulations, environmental regulations聽 and so on. At a minimum what the evidence in our聽聽
[42]
research shows is that organisations have nothing聽 to lose from being more socially responsible in聽聽
[47]
relation to traditional financial and reputational聽 performance metrics and oftentimes organisations聽聽
[54]
have a lot to gain. That really is about them聽 designing CSR strategies that most respond to聽聽
[61]
their local stakeholder preferences and needs and聽 the issues that are most salient for them in their聽聽
[66]
operating environment. Why is corporate social聽 responsibility especially important right now?聽聽
[71]
Firstly, the pandemic has raised I think some聽 really profound questions around employer聽聽
[78]
obligations in relation to employee health聽 and safety. The pandemic has really emphasised聽聽
[83]
organisational responsibilities in relation to聽 the physical and mental health of employees and聽聽
[89]
has really challenged organisations in relation聽 to how they're creating environments within which聽聽
[95]
employees can thrive physically and mentally. A聽 second issue that's out there at the moment around聽聽
[101]
CSR and organisations comes specifically in the聽 pharmaceutical sector. You'll have seen debates聽聽
[108]
around whether pharmaceutical companies ought to聽 waive their patent licensing rights in order to聽聽
[115]
provide freely to pharmaceutical manufacturers聽 around the world the recipe for producing聽聽
[121]
coronavirus vaccines. That's a really good example聽 of an issue where an organisation, in this case a聽聽
[127]
pharmaceutical firm, has a distinctive capability聽 that could make a dramatic difference to global聽聽
[132]
society and where global society says please聽 will you donate that expertise in the form of聽聽
[138]
your patent license to help us as global society聽 thrive. A third issue where at the moment corporate聽聽
[144]
social responsibilities are really lively debate聽 is in relation to the net zero carbon movement.聽聽
[150]
There's a lot of calls now in the context聽 of climate change and sustainability聽聽
[155]
for organisations not only to minimise or reduce聽 their carbon and other environmental impacts聽聽
[162]
but to actually build strategies around net zero聽 impacts to tread more lightly on the world around聽聽
[167]
us by really minimising those impacts down聽 to zero, partly by being super efficient in聽聽
[174]
the use of energy and other resources, partly聽 by the deployment of carbon capture and other聽聽
[180]
technologies that further reduce the overall聽 impact of the organisation and its activities.聽聽
[186]
A fourth issue that's really lively in relation to聽 corporate responsibility now is tax. The pandemic聽聽
[192]
has cost governments around the world a lot of聽 money as they've sought to, for example, provide聽聽
[196]
support to businesses and individuals that聽 have been on furlough through Covid.聽聽
[202]
Government through that needs tax revenues in聽 order to support that expenditure that again聽聽
[208]
has raised the question of responsible tax聽 payments, particularly by large multinationals.聽聽
[214]
Large multinationals have the capacity to move聽 finance across global borders, there's a real聽聽
[219]
question about whether those multinationals are聽 being responsible in relation to the payment of聽聽
[224]
tax in various jurisdictions globally. That again聽 is a very lively corporate responsibility issue聽聽
[231]
around what global society expects of where聽 and how much tax organisations will pay. Really聽聽
[238]
my career has been about addressing two questions.聽 On the one hand there's a question of what聽聽
[244]
organisations are doing in relation to corporate聽 social responsibility and why they're doing it.聽
[248]
On the other hand there are questions聽 about what the impacts of what organisations do聽聽
[253]
in relation to corporate social responsibility聽 are on other aspects of organisational life.
