Hello and welcome to Genius INDIAN…….
[6]
Friends….. today we are going
to discuss…. Green consumerism.
[10]
Green consumerism refers to a type of
consumerism…. which promotes products produced in
[16]
a way…. that protects the natural environment....
it is an ecosystem…. in which consumers demand
[22]
products… and services…. that have undergone
an eco-friendly production process…
[28]
or a process… that involves recycling…
and safeguarding the planet’s resources.
[34]
In other words… green consumerism
revolves around the production…
[38]
promotion, and usage of goods and services….
based on their eco friendly nature.
[45]
So the question arises…..why
do we need Green consumerism?
[49]
And the answer is…. because every person living
on this planet…. consumes a whole lot of products
[55]
and services… throughout her lifetime.
If these products are produced in an
[60]
eco friendly manner… then our world
and our environment remains safe…
[65]
But if they are produced in a manner
that harms the nature… then they are
[70]
not sustainable products.
And that’s where
[73]
green consumerism comes in the picture.
Green consumerism allows the consumers….
[78]
to vote through their wallet.
As we know…in a free market economy….customers
[83]
of any product or service have big powers.
If they don’t buy a product that harms the
[89]
environment…. then its producers will stop
producing it…. and that will save the environment.
[99]
So the second question is: what are the
main functions of green consumerism?
[104]
Well... it serves many functions….
First of all…. green consumerism
[109]
tries to promote practices… that cause no
harm… or less harm.. to our environment..
[115]
And that’s why…. green consumerism sets an agenda…
that covers not just economic aspects…. but also
[122]
the social and cultural aspects of production….
Besides…. green consumerism encourages people….
[129]
to be more aware of a particular
company’s production processes….
[134]
and urges them to buy or use the products and
services….. that do not harm the environment.
[141]
Green consumerism also tries to create a
balance… between the buyers’ behaviors… and
[147]
the producers’ profit objectives….
And it tries to promote products
[152]
which are produced in a sustainable way….
Green consumerism is a holistic…. and
[158]
responsible process of production… and
management…. that satisfies, identifies,
[164]
fulfills, and anticipates the needs of the
stakeholders…. in maintaining the natural
[169]
well-being of our environment…
Waves….
[175]
Green consumerism is a vast subject…. Hundreds
of books have been written on the topic…
[180]
so this single video is not sufficient
to discuss every aspect of it….
[186]
And that’s why we will discuss different aspects
of it in next couple of episodes… and that’s why….
[193]
we will limit ourselves today… just to
a discussion on the green consumerism…
[198]
as related to manufacturing
products…. and things of daily usage.
[203]
In this band…. green consumerism broadly
focuses on the following aspects of production
[209]
and delivery:
Packaging
[212]
Energy efficiency during production…
And finally…..Transportation
[217]
The first point is packaging…..As
we all know…packaging is one
[221]
major area of any commercial activity.
And most packaging is made of plastic…
[228]
businesses love plastic packaging….
because its cheaper... because its very
[233]
easy to produce in massive quantities....and
because it protects products very nicely....
[239]
And because of all these qualities….. plastic
has become an integral part of our lives.
[246]
But this has produced the
massive problem of plastic waste.
[250]
A whole lot of discarded plastic packaging
can linger in landfills for upto 500 years.
[258]
Discarded plastic packaging is choking our
environment... polluting our seas… and is even
[264]
killing innocent cows and other animals...
And that’s why… Green consumerism focuses…
[272]
on eco friendly packaging.. and
on frugal packaging options…
[276]
And that’s why… today lot of companies… are
beginning to replace their plastic packaging..
[282]
with paper products and other alternatives..
[286]
For example Dutch multinational Unilever is
planning to reduce plastic in its packaging.
[292]
By 2025, the corporate giant intends to:
Halve the amount of virgin plastic….they
[298]
currently use in packaging.
They also want to collect and process…
[303]
more plastic packaging than they sell.
They also want to ensure…. that all
[308]
their plastic packaging… is designed to be
fully reusable, recyclable or compostable.
[314]
And finally…. they also want to ensure….
Increase the recycled plastic material
[318]
content in their packaging… to 25%.
Similarly… Amazon.com is planning…
[325]
to do away… with all the Styrofoam and other
plastic packaging… in months and years to come.
[332]
Meanwhile…. environmentalists are also asking
consumers….. to play their role… and go back
[338]
to the Indian way… of carrying a shopping
bag from home… as our ancestors always did.
[347]
The second point is energy efficiency…..
Green consumerism loves products
[352]
and services… that economise on less energy….
It promotes products that have been produced
[357]
with lesser energy consumption…
and that have been produced
[361]
while using energy from renewable sources.
So green consumerism will promote electric cars
[368]
over cars running on diesel or petrol..
it will also promote cars made in plants
[374]
that thrive on solar energy or wind energy.
For example…. Elon Musk is developing the
[380]
Gigafactory.... which will not only be
the the biggest building in the world.....
[385]
but it will also be…. entirely
powered by renewable energy sources.
[391]
Goes without saying... Tesla cars produced in
this factory.... will have more credentials….
[396]
to be approved by green consumerism.
Similarly.... green consumerism promotes….
[403]
green energy options over non renewable sources.
And that’s why… today almost every government in
[410]
the world…. is trying to produce more energy
out of solar… or wind or geo thermal sources…
[417]
rather than simply by burning coal or diesel.
The good thing is… that as of now…. not only the
[424]
green energy sources... are lowering greenhouse
gas emissions… but they are also helping save
[431]
the money…. as the cost of soler energy.. is
right now cheaper than the thermal energy.
[438]
The third point is transportation efficiency…..
Every product or service.. needs to be
[444]
transported from manufacturers and
sellers… to buyers and consumers….
[449]
And as well all know… transport
sector is resonponsible for producing
[454]
a major chunk of greenhouse gases….
So green consumerism loves the products…
[459]
which reduce transportation.. and that’s why
it loves local products over imported products.
[467]
And that’s why… many green consumers… try to
consume only the food products grown near their
[472]
city…or grown near their place of stay.
And they refuse to buy kiwis flown
[478]
in from Newzealand and quinoa
imported from south America….
[485]
So friends… this was a brief intro
to the topic of green consumerism….
[491]
In the next episode…. We will discuss yet
another topic important for our personal and
[496]
professional growth…. So please don’t miss it….
and the best way not to miss it is to subscribe
[501]
to GeniusINDIAN channel….
And the best way to spread
[504]
the knowledge is to like and share the video…
and the best way to improve the quality of the
[509]
work is to provide your valuable feedback to me….
And finally…. The best way to end this
[515]
conversation is to thank you for
