escape for the builders of the hoover

dam into america's playground and the

only city in the world where you can see

the eiffel tower statue of liberty

egyptian pyramids and the canals of

venice all in a single day

but with some competitors now emerging

in the middle east and asia las vegas is

in a fight to maintain its status as the

entertainment capital of the world and

is betting big time on its latest

attraction

the world's first spherical structure

containing the world's largest and
[56]
highest resolution led screen

will not only transform the las vegas
[60]
skyline but quite literally reshape the

entertainment industry

rat pack in the 1960s las vegas has been

renowned for live entertainment and

between showcase fights and residencies

from lady gaga celine dion britney

spears and magic mike the city is

constantly raising the bar with what it

has to offer

its latest offering developed by madison

square garden entertainment and located
[98]
just off the strip behind the venetian

is unlike anything anywhere else on

earth

known as the msg sphere the 1.8 billion

dollar spherical entertainment venue

will stand 112 meters tall contain
[113]
and a half thousand seats and feature

the largest and highest resolution led

screen in the world that's nineteen
[120]
thousand by thirteen and a half thousand
[122]
pixels in case you're wondering

the screen covers an area larger than

three football fields wrapping up over

and behind the stage to give the

audience a fully immersive experience

that's a hundred times clearer than

today's best hd tvs

outside the building is going to be

covered with 54 000 square meters of

programmable lighting giving those who

can't get in a show of their own

but the msg sphere is more than just a

high definition screen using an advanced
[154]
acoustic system known as beamforming

technology multiple audio streams can be

delivered directly to individual seats

simultaneously while an infrasound

haptic system will use vibrations to

enable guests to quite literally feel

the sound around them it's not just

those experiences that are unique the

way the building is being built is also

unlike anything seen before

work first began in 2018 with the

drilling of nearly 600 piles and the
[186]
excavation of some 84 000 cubic meters
[189]
of material
[190]
that's not to stop the sphere rolling
[192]
away but rather to support the weight of
[194]
the immense structure and create a 5 000
[197]
square meter basement for events
[199]
dressing rooms and other amenities that
[201]
make the venue run
[202]
the building's superstructure is made of
[204]
four concrete cores tied together with
[207]
over nine and a half thousand tons of
[208]
steel to create a series of tensioned
[211]
ring beams that hold the weight of the
[213]
11 000 ton roof
[215]
with such a big distance to span the
[217]
team had to ship the world's fourth
[219]
largest crawler crane over from belgium
[221]
to position some of the largest and
[223]
heaviest components
[225]
10 meters taller than the nearby high
[227]
roller observation wheel at its peak the
[230]
crane was a construction project in
[231]
itself taking 18 days to assemble on
[235]
site
[236]
to build the roof an 86 meter temporary
[239]
shoring tower was first assembled in the
[241]
middle of the arena
[243]
then a 154 ton compression ring was
[246]
placed on top that 32 steel trusses all
[249]
connected into
[250]
due to their immense size and weight the
[253]
compression ring and trusses were each
[254]
assembled on the ground over several
[256]
weeks before being craned into place
[260]
the temporary shoring tower was then
[261]
removed and the equal forces of the roof
[263]
structure began to counter each other
[265]
creating a column-free uninterrupted
[268]
space within the sphere

topping out the steel framework in
[274]
mid-2021 work is now underway on the
[277]
sphere's geodesic exoskeleton which will
[279]
add an additional 24 meters to its
[281]
overall height and provide the surface
[283]
for the exterior led displays

once fully enclosed work on the
[287]
state-of-the-art fito will begin
[292]
like so many things the project was
[294]
briefly disrupted by the pandemic and
[296]
its completion and first performance are
[298]
now set for 2023

while some may have thought that msg
[304]
sphere would be just another arena the
[306]
completion of its incredible structure
[308]
has already made it an unmissable
[310]
addition to the city's skyline
[312]
set to connect to the venetian and
[314]
palazzo via the sans expo and convention

center and with an addition to the las
[318]
vegas monorail planned the msg sphere
[321]
looks set to become the latest must-see

in a city of must-sees a building that's

every bit las vegas
