[Music]
[6]
g'day and
[7]
welcome to this month's trust topic if
[10]
you've been
[10]
watching this series you'll know that
[13]
each month through 2021 i've made a
[15]
commitment to
[16]
research and to explore a specific topic
[18]
that focuses on how
[20]
trust impacts almost every measure of
[23]
success in our
[24]
professional and in our personal life
[26]
and i'm using
[28]
the acronym tap into trust which is
[31]
an initiative from the organization
[33]
trust across america
[34]
and trust around the world and each
[37]
letter
[38]
in the acronym tap into trust represents
[40]
a
[41]
a one-word topic and describes an
[43]
aspirational action-based approach to
[46]
elevating trust in our lives
[49]
now last month's topic was on
[52]
accountability
[53]
and this month the topic is all about
[57]
purpose and and here's an an
[60]
aspirational action-based statement for
[62]
you to use this month
[64]
as you as you think about and apply this
[67]
information and strategies on the topic
[69]
of purpose and the action-based
[72]
statement
[72]
is this i engage others to build
[76]
shared purpose i avoid short-term wins
[80]
that undermine future success
[83]
now purpose is one of those words in the
[86]
english language where it's
[87]
its meaning depends on on the context
[91]
in which it's used for example you might
[93]
choose to do something
[94]
on purpose that is to do something
[98]
deliberately or intentionally
[101]
now another example which is illustrated
[103]
in the action-based statement that i
[105]
just shared with you
[106]
is the context of building shared
[108]
purpose
[109]
that is to build or develop a shared
[112]
reason
[113]
upon which all of your decisions and
[115]
actions
[116]
are based now this this this example
[119]
this latter example is is more aligned
[121]
with
[122]
simon sinek's early work on starting
[125]
with why
[126]
that is to start with a clear purpose
[129]
or reason now motivational gurus often
[133]
tout from conference stages around the
[136]
globe that we all need to find our
[138]
purpose in life however
[140]
that's very misleading and not very
[142]
helpful from a
[143]
from a practical sense because what we
[145]
know from the evidence-based research is
[148]
very few people actually find and live
[150]
their life
[151]
based on one purpose so if you haven't
[154]
found your purpose don't sweat it
[156]
and and and here's why rather than
[159]
purpose in life uh being a a
[162]
singular concept for most of us
[165]
depending on our age
[167]
experience um and life preferences
[171]
we might have more than one singular
[174]
purpose
[174]
in our life for example
[178]
during your teenage years you might have
[180]
determined a purpose in life to be an
[182]
outstanding student
[183]
or or a good friend or an accomplished
[186]
musician
[186]
in your 20s you might have determined a
[189]
purpose in your life to be a
[190]
a successful entrepreneur or a reliable
[194]
team player or a devoted husband or wife
[198]
and later in life you might determine a
[200]
purpose in life to be a
[202]
a philanthropist if i could say a
[204]
philanthropist
[205]
or a volunteer or a life coach who can
[207]
who can help others to find their
[209]
purpose in life
[211]
and now while purpose and meaning are
[213]
often used
[214]
synonymously meaning is something we
[217]
would drive from
[218]
um or attach to and experience an
[221]
object a word or an action
[225]
humans are are meaning makers we can
[227]
find or create meaning from
[228]
almost anything if not everything
[232]
while we could go down a philosophical
[234]
rabbit hole now on
[235]
the differences and similarities of
[237]
purpose and meaning
[238]
what we're exploring here is how purpose
[241]
or meaning
[242]
can impact trust in our lives
[246]
so let's consider purpose through the
[248]
lens
[249]
of self-trust the evidence-based
[252]
research here is really clear that
[253]
people who have
[254]
a sense of purpose or meaning in their
[256]
lives report a higher sense of
[259]
well-being
[260]
and life satisfaction than those who
[262]
lack in purpose or
[263]
or lack in meaning in their lives you
[266]
see when
[266]
when we have purpose or meaning in our
[268]
lives we have an internal guidance
[270]
system upon which we can
[271]
base all of our decisions and actions
[273]
and upon which we'll
[275]
assess our sense of self-trust
[278]
the higher the purpose or or meaning in
[280]
our lives the
[282]
higher sense of self-trust so
[285]
what can we discover about purpose
[287]
through the lens of
[289]
trust others our propensity
[292]
to place our trust in others takes a
[295]
combination of
[297]
courage and collaboration
[301]
the aspirational action based statement
[303]
for purpose i shared with you at the
[304]
beginning in a video of the of this
[306]
video
[307]
suggests we engage our stakeholders to
[310]
build
[310]
shared purpose so a shared purpose
[313]
allows us
[314]
to set the platform to have the courage
[316]
to trust in
[317]
others and to work collaboratively
[320]
collaboratively
[321]
with others because we're all making our
[323]
decisions and
[324]
basing our actions on a shared purpose
[327]
and and finally let's consider purpose
[331]
through the lens of earning others trust
[334]
you see to earn others trust they base
[336]
their decision on your trustworthiness
[339]
by assessing
[340]
your character and your competence and
[342]
and the consistency
[344]
of how you display your character and
[346]
competence
[347]
over time and under different situations
[352]
as they observe and assess your
[354]
competence your character and your
[356]
consistency
[357]
they're getting a feel for your
[359]
intentions your reason or purpose behind
[363]
doing what you do so you see without
[366]
a clarity of purpose or without a
[368]
clarity of the reasons upon which you
[370]
base
[371]
your decisions to do what you're what
[373]
you do
[374]
your self-trust your propensity to place
[376]
your trust in
[377]
others and your own trustworthiness are
[380]
all
[380]
at risk and if trust is at risk as you
[384]
consider it through these
[385]
three lenses almost everything is at
[388]
risk
[389]
so for this next month and beyond think
[392]
deeply about your purpose
[393]
or the reason behind what you're
[395]
intentionally choosing to do in your
[397]
professional
[398]
and personal life and remember you might
[400]
have different purposes
[402]
for different roles and for different
[404]
contexts within your life
[406]
now next month's topic related to trust
[409]
is one of my favorites
[410]
it's all about integrity well
[414]
that's it for this month's trust topic
[416]
and until next month
[417]
my very best to you
[426]
you
