[2]
in spite of the pandemic the american
[4]
economy keeps gets
[5]
getting stronger month after month the
[7]
u.s exceeded expectations
[9]
adding 916 000 jobs in march
[12]
the unemployment rate also improved it's
[14]
now at six percent dropping two tenths
[16]
of a percent
[17]
from february the positive news is
[19]
likely attributed to the easing of
[21]
coronavirus restrictions in states and
[23]
counties across the country
[24]
but it could be a double-edged sword as
[26]
covid cases are on the rise in many
[28]
places
[29]
11 states have case increases of at
[31]
least 10 percent in the last two weeks
[33]
16 states have upticks of at least 25
[36]
percent
[37]
i spoke earlier with u.s labor secretary
[39]
and former boston mayor marty walsh
[41]
and i asked him how he thinks we're
[42]
doing as a nation at this moment
[46]
certainly the numbers today were
[48]
encouraging uh six percent unemployment
[50]
rate
[51]
916 000 new jobs in america
[54]
but you're absolutely right what we have
[56]
to be careful of is the pandemic and
[58]
president biden spoke earlier today at a
[60]
press conference and he talked about the
[61]
need for
[62]
continuing to wear masks social physical
[65]
distance
[65]
washing your hands and and the really
[67]
important thing about getting a vaccine
[69]
if you're eligible for a vaccine
[70]
you should get a vaccine we had the the
[73]
president laid out a real good strong
[75]
competent plan
[76]
uh he had a goal of 100 million vaccines
[78]
by the first hundred days
[80]
he's doubled that now hopefully to get
[81]
200 million by the first 100 days
[83]
that's a lot of americans that will have
[85]
vaccines in their arms
[87]
and that's really how we're going to
[88]
continue to move forward here so it's a
[90]
little bit of both the virus as you know
[92]
for the last year has been very
[93]
unpredictable um we've had
[95]
moments where the numbers of virus cases
[97]
have been really low and then
[98]
after during the holidays thanksgiving
[100]
and christmas we saw these these numbers
[101]
increase in big ways
[103]
and we're starting to see them fluctuate
[104]
around the country so uh people need to
[106]
take care of themselves
[107]
[Music]
[109]
you as a as a former mayor understand
[111]
very well that while
[112]
you're making advances in vaccine
[114]
procurement and vaccine
[116]
distribution at the federal level there
[118]
are localities and states
[120]
that are opening up perhaps faster than
[122]
the science dictates that they
[123]
should obviously there are a lot of
[125]
mayors who want to get their cities back
[127]
online there are a lot of governors who
[129]
want to get their states back online
[131]
and people working and and generating
[133]
tax income how do you square this
[134]
because
[135]
as an executive you only have so much
[137]
authority over these these uh states and
[139]
cities
[140]
yeah it's a balance obviously uh you
[142]
know we we've seen now in the last week
[144]
or so
[144]
where some of these states have have
[146]
seen that their numbers i wouldn't call
[147]
it a spike but have increased
[149]
uh but but really you know we can't
[151]
mandate to people to open not to open
[153]
all we can do is suggest that people you
[155]
know take care of themselves with the
[157]
masks
[157]
it is so important to get our economy
[159]
moving again uh you know i got a lot of
[161]
questions today about
[162]
i'm hoping you know what's next month
[164]
going to look like do i think it'll be
[165]
better or worse
[166]
it's really going to depend upon all of
[168]
us and what we do as far as our behavior
[170]
as well as meaning taking care of
[172]
ourselves but i do want to encourage
[174]
people to get vaccinated many people
[176]
i think most of the country by the mid
[178]
mid april will be eligible for vaccines
[180]
and i would suggest as many people as
[182]
possible get vaccinated because
[184]
it is so important we still have 8.4
[186]
million people out of work right now in
[188]
our country and we have another
[189]
probably million million and a half
[191]
people that are out of the workforce so
[192]
we need to see these people get back in
[194]
to generate revenue to generate our
[196]
economy to be able to
[198]
to get us moving back building back
[199]
better as president biden talks about
[201]
i want to talk to you about wages uh 15
[203]
minimum wage didn't make it through that
[205]
last plan
[206]
in in massachusetts where you're from uh
[208]
there's a 13.50
[210]
uh an hour minimum wage with the target
[212]
of getting to 15
[213]
by 2023 it apparently didn't wreck
[216]
massachusetts's
[217]
economy uh to have a higher minimum wage
[220]
uh
[220]
how how do you get there how do you get
[222]
to a point where you can get buy-in
[224]
on a higher minimum wage passed by by
[226]
congress
[227]
again i think that's conversations that
[229]
we're going to have to have with
[230]
business leaders across this country
[232]
uh with with the members of congress
[233]
across this country and really talk
[235]
about the importance of
[237]
raising the minimum wage when you think
[238]
about raising minimum wage it's really
[240]
about raising the opportunity for
[241]
families to earn a living
[242]
uh you know most families can't live on
[244]
seven dollars an hour no family can live
[246]
on seven dollars an hour
[247]
it's pretty hard to live on fifteen
[248]
dollars not fifteen dollars an hour
[250]
but but it's an opportunity for us to
[252]
really think about it the president's
[253]
committed
[254]
to raising the minimum wage i'm
[255]
committed to raise the minimum wage
[257]
there are members of congress committed
[258]
to raise the minimum wage and we just
[260]
have to we have to do some some more
[261]
conversations some more work about it
[263]
work with it to to to try and get the
[265]
bill passed
[267]
we don't have the results yet from the
[269]
amazon vote in bessemer
[271]
uh alabama but it's something that your
[273]
administration has become involved in
[274]
which is not typical the idea that the
[276]
administration the president
[277]
uh backing the possible unionization of
[279]
this plant this amazon plant which would
[281]
be the first time in america
[283]
that that has happened what's your take
[284]
on on the state of unionization and
[287]
and what we need to be doing about it
[289]
well you know i think that you know the
[290]
president believes in quite the
[291]
bargaining i believe in collective
[292]
bargaining the president believes in
[294]
people having a right to join a union i
[295]
have i believe in the same thing
[297]
i i think that you know when you look at
[298]
the labor movement in this country over
[300]
the last 50 years the decline in numbers
[302]
and you look at the decline in the
[303]
middle class there's there's some
[304]
correlation there
[305]
so i think people have the should have
[307]
the right to be able to join the union
[309]
if they want to and there's a vote
[310]
process and that's what's happening in
[312]
amazon right now
[313]
uh people took the took the vote and
[314]
we're waiting to see what the result is
[317]
and if people voted to unionize then we
[319]
should unionize if people voted not to
[321]
unionize
[322]
then that's what that's what the will of
[323]
the worker was there
[326]
uh secretary good to see you thanks for
[328]
