during certain periods of my life i have

a very difficult time

focusing on pretty much anything

important or difficult
[7]
during these periods it seems almost
[9]
impossible to break
[11]
out of the social media limbo where
[13]
you're just constantly switching between
[15]
tabs
[16]
refreshing pages kind of waiting for
[19]
something interesting to happen
[21]
like for someone to post a cool photo on
[23]
instagram or something you're kind of
[25]
waiting to be entertained but if you
[27]
actually have to apply yourself
[29]
it's extremely difficult borderline
[31]
painful to do so
[33]
and i'm pretty sure almost everyone can
[34]
relate to this problem
[36]
i'm sure you've seen a lot of videos on
[38]
youtube giving you little tips and
[39]
tricks as to how to focus better
[42]
including my own channel but there are
[43]
very few videos
[45]
kind of diving in talking about why it's
[48]
so difficult to focus
[49]
on hard things you know like what's the
[52]
deal why can't we just sit down and do
[54]
something important with very little
[56]
strain
[56]
why aren't we motivated to do the things
[58]
that would significantly
[60]
advance us further in our lives because
[63]
it's not like we don't want those things
[65]
it's just hard so in this video i want
[67]
to dive into
[68]
why we procrastinate why it's so hard to
[71]
do important things
[72]
because knowing how this all works helps
[75]
us carve out a long-term
[77]
solution it can help us permanently
[79]
solve this problem and that may sound
[81]
really ambitious
[83]
but i do believe it is possible but
[85]
first we kind of have to
[87]
discover a little bit more about our
[88]
human brain so weird thing about our
[91]
human brain
[92]
our human brain i'm really trying to
[93]
convince you that i'm human the weird
[95]
thing about the brain
[96]
is that it pretty much hasn't changed
[98]
for thousands of years
[99]
we share for the most part the exact
[102]
same brain as our hunter-gatherer
[104]
ancestors
[105]
and this is the type of brain that was
[106]
evolved to scan
[108]
vast valleys for the prospect of food or
[111]
a fresh kill
[112]
and absolutely light up and get excited
[115]
at the sight of an antelope
[116]
so you can gather your friends together
[118]
and run after it kill it this is the
[120]
kind of brain
[121]
that as you're kind of going through a
[124]
berry bush and you find a juicy berry
[126]
you're super excited you eat the berry
[129]
and it pretty much makes your day you
[130]
know it's not really exciting stuff
[132]
there wasn't a lot of stuff to do back
[134]
then
[134]
but that's just kind of the way it was
[136]
and the reason why we were motivated to
[138]
go run after an antelope
[140]
or eat a fresh berry is the same reason
[143]
wow is the same reason we're motivated
[146]
to go on facebook and you know check our
[148]
notifications
[150]
go on instagram etc the reason why we're
[152]
motivated to do any of this stuff is
[154]
because of a brain chemical called
[155]
dopamine
[156]
now you've probably seen a lot of videos
[158]
on youtube if you're into
[159]
self-improvement
[160]
about dopamine but dopamine is kind of
[163]
misunderstood
[164]
because most people think it's the
[165]
feel-good chemical
[167]
it's a brain chemical that's released
[169]
when you're experiencing pleasure it's
[171]
the reason why you experience pleasure
[172]
but that's not exactly true
[174]
because dopamine is the motivating brain
[176]
chemical
[177]
dopamine is what's released when you
[179]
feel like you're about to be rewarded or
[181]
when you feel like you're about to
[183]
experience something pleasurable
[184]
when your ancient ancestors saw the
[186]
antelope frolic across the field
[188]
they got a squirt of dopamine which
[190]
motivated them to go kill it when you
[192]
see a notification
[193]
pop up on facebook you get a squirt of
[196]
dopamine which motivates you to click it
[198]
and what this means is that dopamine
[200]
is what controls your motivation thank
[202]
you boys

oh did you get a big mcchicken yeah you
[206]
said make chicken now why is this
[207]
important despite the fact that we
[209]
share the exact same brains as our
[211]
hunter-gatherer ancestors
[213]
we don't live in that world anymore we
[215]
live in a world of supernormal stimuli
[218]
through ferocious technological
[220]
advancement and
[221]
capitalistic ventures or whatever you
[223]
want to call it we live in a world where
[225]
things are designed to be as pleasurable
[227]
as humanly possible
[229]
and what supernormal stimuli does is it
[232]
hijacks our natural
[233]
reward pathways it tricks our brain into
[236]
thinking
[237]
we are about to do something so
[239]
important for our survival
[240]
that we have an almost irresistible urge
[243]
towards doing that thing a good example
[246]
of this
[246]
is junk food food is integral for our
[249]
survival
[250]
and high calorie foods are usually even
[252]
more important for our survival
[254]
because you know they'll keep us alive
[256]
longer the more calories
[257]
the longer we'll live roughly speaking
[259]
see what junk food does
[260]
is it's mechanically engineered to be as
[264]
high fat high calorie as possible so
[266]
when we get that
[267]
beautiful we when we eat that beautiful
[269]
potato chip our brain remembers that
[272]
and the next time we see a bag of potato
[274]
chips at the grocery store
[275]
there's a huge amount of dopamine that's
[278]
released
[279]
motivating you to go grab that reward
[282]
that reward that's integral for your
[283]
survival so we almost become
[285]
slaves to our dopamine system we almost
[287]
just go where our dopamine system
[289]
tells us to go that's why we get into
[292]
kind of social media binge
[294]
because our brain is telling us to stay
[297]
on
[297]
these social media sites because there's
[299]
a chance that we might get a reward
[301]
we might get social validation where we
[303]
we might be able to
[304]
look at something kind of stimulating
[306]
and naughty it's the dopamine system
[308]
that's telling us and motivating us to
[310]
stay there so what does this all mean if
[312]
we're bringing this all together
[314]
basically for most of us who have
[316]
difficulty focusing
[317]
we find it really really difficult to be
[319]
motivated to do harder things
[321]
that is only because we have
[323]
reprogrammed our brain
[325]
to fall for this super normal stimuli
[327]
rather than
[328]
normal stimuli natural stimuli because
[331]
it's not that these
[332]
natural rewards aren't rewarding they're
[334]
just less rewarding than the
[336]
artificial supernormal rewards so the
[339]
long-term solution to be able to focus
[341]
on boring things
[343]
is to reprogram our brain to remember
[346]
that these things are actually
[347]
pleasurable
[348]
and really good for us and integral for
[350]
our survival and this isn't just about
[352]
a dopamine fast for a couple of days or
[355]
something like that
[356]
we almost need to reset our baseline
[359]
long term we need to think about how
[361]
much stimulation we want
[363]
in our lives what kind of super normal
[365]
stimulus do we want to take
[367]
part in you know i've noticed in my own
[369]
life that when i'm camping for a long
[371]
period of time
[372]
and there isn't much to do other than
[374]
figure out how to cook a fish over a
[376]
fire or set up my tent
[378]
or go for a walk in the woods or go
[380]
swimming or lay on the sand
[382]
in these situations little things like
[385]
having a conversation with a sibling or
[387]
a friend
[387]
becomes immensely pleasurable it's the
[389]
same reason why people who break out of
[391]
an addiction cycle
[393]
they stop doing their immensely
[395]
pleasurable thing
[396]
cold turkey after a certain amount of
[398]
time they find an
[399]
increased enjoyment out of life itself
[402]
pretty much everything in life becomes
[404]
more enjoyable
[405]
they start to find motivation to do
[407]
things other than their addiction
[409]
you know it's something that i also
[410]
noticed during the quarantine why it was
[412]
so hard for me to
[414]
find my work ethic again it's because
[416]
all that time inside
[418]
made me an internet addict i spent so
[420]
much time looking at
[421]
screens that my baseline of dopamine and
[425]
stimulation was so high
[427]
that the more boring things became
[429]
almost painful to do in comparison
[432]
the disparity of stimulation became so
[434]
vast
[435]
that i felt physical pain trying to do
[438]
harder things so if we're able to find a
[441]
way to
[441]
genuinely enjoy the things that make our
[444]
lives better
[446]
then what are we doing like why don't we
[448]
just go and do that i really want to
[449]
challenge you guys
[450]
over the next couple of weeks or months
[453]
to really think about how much
[454]
stimulation you want to invite into your
[457]
life
[458]
you know what's actually adding value to
[460]
your life and can you reduce the amount
[462]
of
[462]
super supernormal stimuli that you're
[465]
indulging in on a daily basis
[467]
you may actually find that by reducing
[469]
your amount of time on social media or
[471]
on youtube
[472]
or eating junk food or you name it you
[475]
may actually come to
[476]
genuinely look forward to socializing
[480]
you might actually look forward to
[482]
reading a book you might actually be
[484]
motivated to go to the gym there will be
[486]
that dopamine driver
[489]
pointing you in that direction creating
[491]
an irresistible
[492]
urge to go to the gym like who would
[495]
have thought that's possible
[496]
and it is possible because it's science
[499]
one way that i'm going to make sure i
[500]
stick to this over the next month
[502]
at least is i made a list of a large
[505]
amount of things that are fairly low
[507]
stimulus that i can do instead of doing
[511]
a more stimulating alternative that
[513]
includes things like
[514]
going for a walk reading a book talking
[517]
with a friend
[518]
skyping a friend going to the gym by
[520]
having that list in your hand
[522]
you'll have a automatic response to that
[525]
urge to go do the the thing like you
[528]
know
[528]
eat a bag of chips or something so i'll
[530]
make a follow-up video on my second
