[0]
well hello there my name's mark buchanan
[2]
from eden.co.uk
[4]
and in this video we're going to talk
[6]
about what advent reads represent
[10]
i suppose the first question we should
[11]
ask ourselves though is what
[13]
is advent advent takes its name from the
[16]
latin word adventus
[18]
which literally means coming or arrival
[21]
and carries the idea of waiting
[22]
expectantly for something
[24]
[Music]
[26]
no one knows for sure exactly when the
[27]
christian season of advent was first
[29]
observed
[30]
but we know the tradition stretches back
[32]
at least 1500 years
[35]
in christianity advent is a period when
[38]
we think about the arrival of jesus
[40]
from three different perspectives
[43]
firstly his arrival on the earth as a
[44]
baby
[46]
secondly his arrival into our hearts
[48]
when we accept him as our lord and
[49]
savior
[50]
and thirdly his triumphant return to the
[53]
earth at the end of time
[56]
in the 15th centuries the advent has
[58]
been celebrated many traditions and
[60]
practices have grown up around it
[62]
for instance the use of foliage wreaths
[65]
to commemorate the advent season
[66]
can be traced all the way back to 16th
[68]
century germany
[70]
but the modern day version with
[71]
different colored candles has only been
[73]
with us since
[74]
1839 this modern version was the
[78]
invention of a german lutheran
[80]
theologian
[81]
named johann henrich vikkern he was a
[84]
passionate believer in the need to
[86]
improve people's
[87]
physical and social conditions as well
[89]
as their spiritual well-being
[92]
this led him to set up hostels where
[94]
wayward men and boys could receive
[95]
practical education
[97]
to help them earn a living when he was
[100]
just 25
[101]
wickens set up the rowers house or
[103]
roughhouse in hamburg
[105]
which soon filled to capacity
[108]
as the christmas season approached vicar
[110]
found himself constantly being asked
[112]
is it christmas yet in order to avoid
[115]
this daily interrogation
[117]
he decided to build a candle wheel he
[120]
found an old wagon wheel
[122]
which he hung like a chandelier in the
[124]
prayer hall of the rowers house
[126]
he placed four large white candles
[129]
equally spaced around the rim of the
[130]
wheel
[131]
to represent the four sundays in
[133]
december before christmas
[135]
he then placed a smaller red candles to
[138]
fill the gaps between the white candles
[140]
six each for the first three weeks and
[143]
four for the last week
[145]
each weekday and saturday he would light
[148]
one of the red candles
[149]
and on each of the sundays he would like
[151]
one of the large white candles
[154]
this was a simple way of marking the
[156]
days of advent and also helped some of
[158]
the smaller children to learn how to
[160]
count
[162]
words soon spread about johan hinrich
[164]
vikken's new invention
[165]
and families all over germany started to
[168]
copy it
[170]
during that time traditional foliage
[172]
began to be incorporated into these
[173]
candle rings
[174]
and the advent wreath as we now know it
[176]
was born
[178]
by the early 1900s advent wreaths were
[181]
starting to appear in protestant
[182]
churches
[183]
and not long after that catholic
[185]
churches also started to use them
[188]
by the 1940s many churches in america
[191]
were using advent wreaths in their
[192]
advent services
[194]
sometime during this period a fifth
[196]
candle the christ candle
[198]
was added to the center of the advent
[199]
wreath to symbolize the light
[201]
that came into the world with the birth
[203]
of jesus and the purity of his life
[206]
it may surprise you to know that advent
[208]
reads were virtually unheard of in the
[210]
uk
[211]
until 1965 when children's program blue
[214]
peter
[215]
demonstrated how to make one and it was
[217]
only in the 1980s
[219]
that the alternative service book of the
[221]
church of england started to offer any
[223]
guidance
[224]
as to how to incorporate advent reads
[226]
into advent services
[228]
it may also surprise you to know just
[230]
how many layers of meaning an advent
[232]
reef has
[234]
for instance the circular shape of the
[236]
reef symbolizes the eternal nature of
[239]
god and the everlasting life we find
[241]
through jesus
[244]
even the evergreen foliage used to wrap
[246]
the wreath can be seen
[247]
as a symbol of the continuity of life
[251]
holly with its spiky leaves and blood
[253]
red berries is a seasonal reminder of
[255]
jesus crown of thorns
[257]
and his blood and pine cones speak to us
[259]
of life coming from
[261]
death and then there's the candles
[265]
the red and white ones chosen by johan
[267]
henrik vikken
[268]
were probably just what was available in
[270]
his house and they've remained the
[272]
traditional lutheran colours
[275]
once advent wreaths started to be used
[277]
in churches though it didn't take long
[279]
for pastors and priests to realize that
[282]
they could use the four candles to
[283]
represent the four themes of the advent
[286]
season
[288]
they also realized that they could match
[289]
the colour of the candles to the colour
[291]
of the vestments that they wore
[293]
during advent so what do advent candle
[297]
colors mean
[299]
in the anglican church the four main
[300]
candles are usually red
[302]
symbolizing communion in some anglican
[306]
churches and in catholic churches
[308]
three of the four main candles are
[309]
purple symbolizing prayer and penitence
[312]
and the fourth is rose coloured
[314]
symbolizing joy
[317]
in those anglican churches that follow
[318]
the sarum rites
[320]
the original basis for the anglican book
[322]
of common prayer
[323]
the purple candles are replaced by dark
[325]
blue ones
[326]
whose colour represents the colour of
[328]
the night sky before the arrival of
[330]
jesus
[332]
the moravian church with its emphasis on
[334]
simplicity and practicality
[336]
prefers an advent wreath with just four
[338]
plain white candles
[340]
often made of beeswax
[343]
different christian traditions give the
[345]
advent candles different names
[347]
and use them to represent different
[348]
biblical themes
[350]
but in the most popular traditions the
[352]
first candle is referred to as the
[354]
prophecy candle
[355]
to symbolize the hope of a messiah
[357]
proclaimed by the old testament prophets
[360]
like isaiah the second candle is
[363]
referred to as the bethlehem candle
[365]
to commemorate mary and joseph's journey
[367]
there in preparation for the savior's
[370]
birth
[371]
the third candle is referred to as the
[373]
shepherd's candle and it reminds us of
[375]
the joy that came into the world when
[377]
jesus was born
[380]
the fourth candle is known as the angels
[382]
candle and commemorates their
[384]
declaration in the skies over bethlehem
[386]
of
[387]
peace on earth good will to men
[390]
in all traditions the fifth candle is
[392]
the christ candle and it's
[394]
lit on either christmas eve or christmas
[396]
day to celebrate his birth and the light
[398]
he brought to the world
[400]
so the next time you see an advent
[402]
wreath why not take a few moments to
[404]
think about the symbolism woven into it
[407]
and as you enjoy the glow of the candles
[410]
remember the light of the world
[412]
who came two thousand years ago who will
[414]
come into your heart if you will let him
[417]
and who will come to the earth again
[419]
when the time is right
