Transformational Leadership Theory - YouTube
Channel: Communication Coach Alex Lyon
[0]
we are going to look at transformational
[2]
leadership
[3]
theory we'll take a look at five key
[5]
characteristics of transformational
[7]
leaders
[8]
and we'll see if you can relate to them
[10]
so let's get into it
[17]
i'm alex lyon and we will soon have
[19]
almost 200 videos on
[21]
communication and leadership on this
[22]
channel today
[24]
i'm going to rely mostly on two key
[26]
books
[27]
johnson and hackman's book on leadership
[29]
a communication perspective
[31]
and nordhaus's book on leadership i
[34]
highly recommend both for your personal
[37]
library
[37]
and i will put all of the references and
[39]
links in the description below
[41]
this video there's been lots of interest
[43]
lately
[44]
in the transformational leadership
[45]
approach but it has its origins
[48]
in the late 1970s james mcgregor burns
[51]
wrote a book on leadership where he
[53]
contrasted transformational leaders with
[55]
transactional leadership he used
[58]
maslow's
[59]
hierarchy of needs to explain these two
[62]
approaches
[63]
transactional leadership is where a
[65]
leader is mainly concerned with
[67]
helping followers meet their lower level
[70]
needs on the bottom
[71]
three tiers of maslow's pyramid by
[74]
satisfying followers psychological
[77]
safety and belonging needs
[78]
it's a transaction in exchange for
[81]
followers hard work
[82]
transactional leaders help followers
[84]
secure these rewards
[86]
transformational leaders take that to
[88]
the next level and attempt to engage the
[90]
entire
[91]
person to satisfy followers lower level
[94]
needs that i mentioned
[95]
and also their higher level needs on
[97]
massless hierarchy
[98]
esteem and self-actualization according
[101]
to burns transformational leaders
[103]
enhance
[104]
followers level of motivation commitment
[107]
and
[107]
ownership ultimately the thinking goes
[110]
this
[111]
transforms followers into leaders
[113]
themselves
[114]
johnson and hackman describe the five
[117]
key characteristics of transformational
[119]
leaders
[120]
let's see if you can relate to any of
[121]
these personally first transformational
[124]
leaders are creative
[125]
they're always looking for new ideas and
[128]
ways to do things
[129]
they challenge business as usual
[132]
creative people come from all walks of
[134]
life
[134]
what they have in common is that they
[136]
are hard-working
[138]
non-conformist in their thinking and
[139]
they're comfortable with
[141]
ambiguity and complexity a great example
[144]
of this
[145]
is dave kelly he's the founder of ido
[148]
the most successful product design firm
[151]
in the world
[152]
kelly and ideo were known for developing
[154]
incredibly innovative products
[156]
and services for clients so question for
[159]
you
[160]
do you see yourself as a creative person
[163]
the good news is
[164]
dave kelly has been teaching
[165]
professionals creativity skills for
[167]
decades and he's convinced that anybody
[170]
can be more creative with
[171]
practice second transformational leaders
[174]
are interactive
[176]
they communicate a lot with followers
[178]
they are engaged
[179]
and through this communication they
[182]
become more aware of their followers
[183]
needs and motivations
[186]
as johnson and hackman say only when the
[188]
leader is involved with followers
[190]
can he or she find ways to do things
[193]
better
[193]
a great current day example is barack
[196]
obama i've never met him but they say
[198]
that he's very interactive
[200]
socially engaged and a strong
[202]
communicator
[203]
he connects with everyday people and
[205]
world leaders equally well
[207]
question for you would you describe
[209]
yourself as interactive
[211]
do you have strong people skills well
[214]
communication skills
[215]
are learnable and we can all improve
[217]
with guidance and
[218]
practice third transformational leaders
[221]
are visionary
[222]
some say this is their most important
[224]
characteristic they can explain in
[227]
concise and clear language where they
[229]
want to
[229]
take the organization they're able to
[232]
explain the goal
[233]
with a sense of purpose in ways that
[235]
energize people
[236]
and creates a standard of excellence
[238]
that inspires
[239]
followers and i can think of no better
[242]
person to illustrate this than
[243]
martin luther king jr he articulated in
[247]
compelling language
[248]
a vision for the future that was worth
[250]
fighting for
[251]
his famous i have at dream speeches
[254]
perhaps one of the most
[255]
vision-based communication examples
[257]
there is so question for you
[259]
are you able to articulate a goal and
[261]
purpose
[262]
clearly and in a compelling way well
[265]
like the other characteristics mentioned
[267]
you can get better with practice now
[269]
remember
[270]
before king gave his famous speech he
[273]
was preaching
[273]
and speaking multiple times a week in
[276]
church
[277]
and in the community for decades he
[279]
sharpened his message with
[281]
lots and lots of practice and practice
[283]
is something that anybody can do
[286]
fourth transformational leaders are
[287]
empowering as i said earlier
[289]
burns based his thinking about
[291]
transformation leaders
[292]
on the higher levels of maslow's
[294]
hierarchy the top level
[296]
is self-actualization transformation
[299]
leaders in essence
[300]
have to empower their leaders to become
[302]
all they can be
[303]
by delegating important jobs and then
[306]
supporting and trusting followers to
[308]
rise to the occasion
[310]
this also allows organizations to grow
[312]
more quickly
[313]
i think phil knight the founder of nike
[316]
is a great example of an empowering
[318]
leader
[318]
in his book shoe dog he described the
[321]
early years at nike when he was hiring
[323]
employees he quickly recognized that if
[325]
he wanted nike to grow
[327]
he had to empower his employees to build
[330]
the business
[331]
and sell more shoes without his
[333]
day-to-day direct involvement in every
[335]
decision
[336]
so question for you are you able to
[338]
delegate
[339]
encourage and trust others to take
[342]
action
[343]
if we want to engage our followers on
[345]
those highest levels and help them grow
[348]
into leaders themselves then empowerment
[350]
is the best way to get there
[352]
fifth transformational leaders are
[354]
passionate they are true believers in
[356]
their cause they
[357]
demonstrate extraordinary commitment
[360]
even in the face of repeated
[362]
failure their passion enthusiasm
[365]
and motivation are contagious mother
[368]
teresa is a great example
[370]
her organization and mission was to
[372]
minister
[373]
to the sick and dying the people on the
[376]
streets that society had forgotten
[378]
she worked until she was 87 years old
[380]
and was hospitalized several times as
[382]
she got older
[383]
there were many stories about mother
[385]
teresa leaving the hospital early
[387]
she would say to doctors i have to go i
[390]
still have important work to do
[392]
her passion and commitment electrified
[395]
the people around her
[396]
so question for you how would you rate
[398]
your level of passion
[400]
if we can find something we truly care
[402]
about that's usually when we will see
[404]
our level
[405]
of passion go up so how would you rate
[407]
yourself on each of these key five
[409]
characteristics
[410]
as mentioned i highly recommend johnson
[412]
and hackman's book
[413]
on leadership there's a link below to
[416]
that
[417]
and i recently recorded a related video
[419]
on the top five traits that leaders
[422]
tend to have once that is posted i will
[424]
put a link to that video in the
[426]
description below this one as well
[427]
until next time thanks god bless and i
[429]
will see you soon
