AQA English Language Paper 2 Question 1 (updated and animated) - YouTube
Channel: Mr Bruff
[0]
in last year's November recent paper
[2]
fewer than half of the students entered
[4]
achieved four out of four in AQA English
[7]
language paper to question one it's
[9]
supposed to be a simple question but
[11]
there are some hidden depth to it and in
[13]
this video I'll teach you how to get
[15]
four out of four in this potentially
[17]
difficult question in this video we're
[20]
looking at AQA english-language paper 2
[22]
question 1 which is a 4 mark question
[25]
assessing the first bullet point of a o1
[28]
to identify and interpret explicit and
[31]
implicit information and ideas
[33]
question 1 presents you with 8
[35]
statements asking you to identify four
[38]
which are true let's look at a typical
[40]
question taken from mr. Bruce guide to
[42]
GCSE English language available in
[45]
paperback on Amazon or ebook at mr.
[47]
broth comm read source a from lines 1 to
[51]
25 choose four statements which are true
[54]
shade the circles in the boxes of the
[56]
statements which are true so the first
[59]
simple tip here is to draw a box around
[61]
the part of the text you're being asked
[63]
to take your answers from in this case
[65]
lines 1 to 25 just make sure you do that
[68]
carefully and don't strike through any
[70]
actual lines of text in the source
[72]
because you're gonna need to look back
[74]
at this part of the text when you're
[75]
working on other questions and you don't
[77]
want to find that you can't read some of
[79]
the words you might think this question
[81]
is similar to paper 1 question 1 but it
[84]
is actually a bit harder as it may
[86]
require you to infer and read between
[88]
the lines let me show you what I mean by
[90]
that some of the true statements will be
[93]
easy to find like statement B Andrew
[96]
broth makes online video tutorials
[97]
that's easily identified as true from a
[100]
reading of the line in the source he
[102]
creates video tutorials for English
[104]
language and literature and uploads them
[106]
on to YouTube but the correct statements
[108]
are not always as easy as that to find
[110]
look at statement H Liam Murphy makes a
[114]
joke to excuse his poor exam result now
[116]
there is nowhere in the text that
[118]
explicitly says Liam Murphy makes a joke
[120]
to excuse his poor exam results what you
[123]
have to do is read the line I won't tell
[125]
you my exam results but if I'd gone to
[127]
an all-boys school I might have been a
[129]
brain surgeon and actually infer from
[131]
that that a this is it
[133]
and be the joke is excusing his poor
[136]
exam results now that is true but the
[139]
point I'm making is that you have to
[141]
read between the lines to work it out
[142]
and there are other challenges too in
[145]
the November 2018 resit paper many
[148]
students chose an incorrect statement
[150]
which was worded very similarly to a
[152]
statement from the text so the original
[155]
text said something like speak to most
[157]
students who revised online and you'll
[159]
discover that YouTube is their number
[160]
one website of choice for learning and
[162]
one of the statements in the question
[164]
was most students revise online and you
[167]
can see that the wording of the
[169]
statement is very similar to what it
[171]
says in the text but that's not actually
[172]
what the source is saying the statement
[175]
is incorrect the source doesn't say that
[177]
most students revise online it makes a
[179]
statement about what most students who
[181]
revise online actually do when they are
[183]
there and what happened in the November
[185]
2018 exam and what you need to make sure
[188]
you avoid yourself is many students
[190]
selected that statement is correct and
[192]
then just look for three more correct
[194]
statements but the truth was that the
[197]
statement was not correct and they were
[199]
there for four more correct statements
[201]
to find now the exam board isn't trying
[203]
to catch you out a careful and close
[205]
reading of the text is what assessment
[207]
objective one is all about but this is a
[209]
good reminder to read the text very
[211]
carefully and you have time to do so
[214]
the entire exam paper just like with
[216]
paper one is worth a total of 80 marks
[219]
and the exam is a 1-hour 45 minute exam
[222]
now if you allow 15 minutes for reading
[224]
the sources you're left with 90 minutes
[226]
to achieve a possible maximum of 80
[228]
marks which means you should spend
[230]
around one minute per mark available on
[233]
each question so with question 1 you
[235]
should spend around 5 minutes on it and
[237]
that's more than enough time to read the
[239]
eight statements reread the section of
[241]
the text in question and carefully
[243]
choose your answers once you've found a
[245]
correct statement you need to shade the
[247]
circle in the box next to it and here's
[250]
a very useful final tip the statements
[252]
are always presented in the same
[254]
chronological order as the text so it
[256]
should be easy to check in a methodical
[258]
and consistent way that you've
[260]
identified the correct answers I hope
[262]
you found this video useful if you'd
[264]
like to see
[265]
a longer video on this question then you
[266]
can see one just here click on the
[268]
screen and you'll be taken to that video
