Best Video Editing Software for Mac (on every budget!) - YouTube

Channel: Justin Brown - Primal Video

[0]
video editing software on Mac now
[2]
there's a ton of options out there and
[3]
some awesome new players that have
[5]
entered the market over the past few
[6]
years for anyone that's considering
[8]
options it can be pretty overwhelming to
[10]
know where to start whether you're
[11]
already using the best software and what
[13]
your upgrade options are so after
[15]
testing a heap of options in this video
[17]
we're going to cover up my
[17]
recommendations across every price
[19]
bracket no matter what your budget
[21]
whether you're just getting started with
[22]
video you don't know where to begin
[24]
you're considering an upgrade from your
[26]
current software or if you've been
[27]
editing for years you just want to know
[29]
that you're using the best software out
[31]
there for you then stay tuned
[38]
hey it's Justin Brown different primal
[41]
video but we teach you to get better
[42]
results with your videos faster so now
[45]
on to the software we're going to break
[46]
this down into three categories so you
[48]
know exactly where to look no matter
[50]
what your budget and first up is free
[52]
software so the free software options
[55]
are just going ahead in leaps and bounds
[56]
some of the free software that's
[58]
available these days totally beats out a
[60]
lot of the paid options that were
[61]
available just a few years ago in this
[63]
pricing bracket you would expect to see
[65]
things like iMovie but as it turns out
[67]
I'm movies not actually free anymore so
[69]
we'll cover that in the next category so
[71]
in this category we've actually got some
[73]
new options and they're really good
[74]
we've got things like DaVinci Resolve
[76]
hitfilm and light works now all three of
[79]
these are actually cut down or light
[81]
versions of their full parent software
[84]
the full professional package of that
[85]
software but that doesn't necessarily
[87]
make that a bad thing
[88]
all three of these options are really
[91]
good options for free video editing
[92]
software and they all then have the
[95]
upgrade part to the full professional
[97]
version if and when you need it
[99]
all three are quite comprehensive
[100]
packages and they offer a high degree of
[102]
flexibility for all new and intermediate
[105]
editors I personally really like the
[107]
interface and the workflow of DaVinci
[109]
Resolve not to mention it's insanely
[111]
awesome color correction capabilities I
[113]
really like hip film for its simplicity
[116]
when it comes to video editing but also
[118]
in special effects capabilities light
[120]
works is also a really solid solution
[122]
and it's also really powerful it also
[125]
works on Linux as well so for all your
[127]
Linux users out there and check it out
[129]
now it's a really tough choice but if I
[131]
had to pick one my pick would be DaVinci
[133]
Resolve I really like the way that it
[135]
almost mimics Adobe Premiere it's got an
[137]
awesome workflow it's really easy to use
[139]
and it's got incredibly awesome color
[141]
correction capabilities if you are going
[144]
to be editing videos that were created
[145]
on cheaper consumer cameras and not
[147]
professional cameras then it's highly
[149]
like that you'll have to convert or
[151]
transcribe your video files before
[153]
you're able to edit them in DaVinci
[155]
Resolve if that's going to be a problem
[157]
for you then check out hit film or
[159]
Lightworks because they both seem to
[161]
support a larger range of file types
[163]
straight out of the box next up we're
[165]
jumping to the sub 100
[167]
nine dollar price point we are talking
[169]
US dollars here now really here the
[172]
difference between the free software and
[174]
what you'll find in this category in
[175]
most cases is that your software
[178]
packages are a complete end-to-end
[179]
solution so for example Lightworks free
[182]
which we spoke about in the free
[184]
software category has a limitation on
[186]
the files that you can export in the
[188]
Lightworks you actually can't export a
[190]
full master file or full completed video
[193]
file of your video all you can do is
[195]
export to Vimeo at 1080p or to YouTube
[199]
you can actually only export at a
[201]
maximum resolution of 720p so back in
[204]
this pricing bracket of sub $199 you can
[207]
expect that your video editing software
[209]
here is generally an end-to-end solution
[212]
there aren't many restrictions if any
[214]
placed on the video editing software so
[216]
what that really means is in most cases
[218]
you won't have to convert or transcode
[221]
your footage to a different format to be
[222]
able to edit it you shouldn't have any
[224]
limitations on the video files that
[226]
you're able to export so in this
[228]
category you've got software like iMovie
[230]
which they now sell for $14.99
[232]
you've got wondershare filmora you've
[234]
got ScreenFlow and you've got Adobe
[236]
Premiere Elements which is the cut-down
[238]
version of Adobe Premiere Pro and these
[241]
pieces of software are also bringing in
[243]
things like 4k video editing 360 degree
[246]
VR footage that you're able to edit as
[248]
well things like GPU rendering which is
[250]
where you're using your video card or
[252]
your GPU to take most of the load off
[255]
your processor so your rendering times
[256]
are a lot faster the standouts for me in
[259]
this category are ScreenFlow and Adobe
[261]
Premiere Elements ScreenFlow is awesome
[263]
for screen capturing but also for video
[266]
editing editing in ScreenFlow is so easy
[268]
but still really powerful I really like
[271]
the interface and the workflow and the
[272]
power that you have over your editing in
[274]
Adobe Premiere Elements just makes it
[276]
really easy to get your content in and
[278]
out quick and also with it being a sort
[280]
of cut-down version of the full Adobe
[282]
Premiere Pro then it's great to have
[284]
that as an upgrade path if you get used
[286]
to one and you're looking for more
[287]
features then it's an easy logical step
[289]
to jump to Premiere Pro and the other
[292]
one that I need to mention is
[293]
wondershare filmora really for the under
[295]
the $50 price point it is great video
[298]
editing software and it's really
[300]
powerful as well so if I had to pick one
[301]
of those my choice would be Adobe
[303]
Premiere Elements again I really like
[306]
the upgrade path to Adobe Premiere Pro
[308]
but I also really like the interface and
[310]
the workflow of Premiere Elements so now
[312]
we're going to look at the $199 and
[315]
above pricing category which also
[317]
includes subscription options as well so
[319]
really the biggest difference with this
[321]
category is that this is your full
[323]
professional video editing software
[324]
these programs are all insanely powerful
[327]
they'll all allow you to get right down
[329]
to frame by frame based editing so so
[331]
much control over your actual
[333]
storytelling you'll have great audio
[335]
controls you'll be able to mix your
[337]
frame rates mix the file types that
[339]
you're bringing in and you won't need to
[340]
convert your files in order to be able
[343]
to edit them so all the latest and
[344]
greatest technology when it comes to
[346]
video editing it's in these packages so
[348]
the software in this category includes
[350]
things like Lightworks Pro Final Cut Pro
[353]
10 hitfilm Pro Adobe Premiere Pro
[356]
DaVinci Resolve
[358]
an avid media composer now one thing to
[360]
note that Adobe Premiere Pro in this
[362]
category is subscription only you can't
[365]
go and just pay the 100 feet and then
[367]
you own the software the only way that
[369]
you can get Adobe Premiere Pro get the
[371]
latest version of it anyway is to sign
[373]
on for a monthly or annual fee
[375]
Lightworks and avid also have
[377]
subscription options but the time of
[379]
recording this video you can still buy
[380]
them outright as well now Before we jump
[382]
into my recommendation it's really
[384]
important to note here that it is
[385]
personal preference really there's that
[388]
many options out there and what works
[390]
best for me may not work best for you
[393]
the best editors out there can jump from
[395]
platform to platform or program to
[397]
program because they are just tools to
[399]
getting the job done so when you look at
[401]
them that way probably the best thing
[403]
you can do is to try as many different
[405]
programs as you can to see which one
[407]
does everything that you're after to see
[409]
which one is the easiest for you to use
[411]
has the most power and performance for
[413]
what you're looking to achieve but at
[416]
the end of the day it's which one's
[417]
going to allow you to tell the stories
[419]
that you want to tell so after testing
[420]
and using all of these the standouts for
[422]
me are Final Cut Pro 10 and Adobe
[424]
Premiere Pro I really like the way that
[427]
Final Cut Pro 10 just renders everything
[430]
in the background and it's easy to get
[432]
great
[433]
results and get your videos in and get
[434]
them out really quick I really like the
[436]
power and the performance in Adobe
[438]
Premiere I really like the integration
[441]
that it has with After Effects and
[442]
Photoshop so the whole Adobe suite just
[445]
works so well together
[446]
now if I had to pick between the two my
[448]
personal preference would be Final Cut
[450]
10 now I never would have thought that I
[452]
would have said that and not that long
[454]
ago I definitely wouldn't have said that
[455]
but purely based on the background
[457]
rendering and how powerful that is and
[460]
how much time that that saves for me
[462]
that's a game changer and has totally
[464]
changed my editing workflow
[466]
I still use Adobe Premiere Pro a lot but
[469]
right now my go-to is Final Cut 10 so
[471]
before we do a quick recap on my top
[473]
recommendations where ever you can
[475]
download either as many of the free
[477]
versions as you can or get as many
[479]
30-day trial versions of the different
[481]
programs as you can and try them and see
[484]
which one works best for you so in the
[486]
free category my recommendation is
[488]
DaVinci Resolve in the sub of $199 price
[491]
category my recommendation is Adobe
[493]
Premiere Elements and then the $199 and
[496]
above pricing category my recommendation
[499]
is Final Cut Pro 10 so as you can see
[502]
there's a ton of options out there and
[503]
they've all got different workflows the
[505]
best way to figure out what's right for
[507]
you is to trial a few and see what works
[509]
starting with these recommendations you
