Taxes For Teenagers! | Do You Need To File A Tax Return? - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
hello everyone and welcome back in
[2]
today's video we're going to be talking
[4]
about taxes
[6]
more specifically we're going to be
[8]
talking about taxes for teenagers now
[11]
this isn't going to be the most
[13]
entertaining video you ever watched but
[15]
it definitely is important and i applaud
[17]
all of you for watching also i want to
[20]
remind you guys that i am just some
[22]
random kid on the internet i am not a
[24]
professional i'm just passing along the
[26]
information i have researched and
[28]
received for my own personal use and i'm
[30]
passing that along to you guys so after
[33]
watching this video and if you find out
[35]
you might need to file your taxes you're
[37]
gonna want to talk with your parents or
[39]
a financial expert okay now with that
[42]
out of the way let's get right into it
[44]
here so the first thing we're going to
[46]
answer when it comes to taxes and
[48]
especially taxes for teenagers is what
[51]
is a dependent so let's step in your
[54]
parents shoes for example if they're
[56]
filing their taxes they can label you
[59]
their child or another family member as
[62]
a dependent this can allow them to
[64]
reduce their taxable income chances are
[67]
for most you your parents will have you
[70]
as dependents on their taxes but if
[72]
you're not sure you can just ask now
[74]
that is important because in the rest of
[76]
this video i'm gonna be talking about
[78]
taxes for teens that are labeled as a
[81]
dependent on their
[83]
parents tax returns okay so now we're
[86]
going to go into our first section here
[88]
which is earned income so if you're a
[91]
teenager and you're working a part-time
[93]
job during the summer that is earned
[96]
income and if you don't invest at all or
[100]
something like that getting a return
[102]
from your investments maybe in the stock
[104]
market if you don't have any of that
[106]
then chances are you only have earned
[109]
income from a job so if you don't have
[111]
any investments and you only have earned
[113]
income then this would apply to you and
[116]
the minimum amount for earned income is
[119]
twelve thousand four hundred dollars so
[122]
if with your part-time job you make
[124]
twelve thousand three hundred dollars
[126]
then you don't have to file a tax return
[129]
but if you make 12 400
[132]
or more than that then you do so i'm
[134]
gonna read this example for you guys
[136]
that i will throw up on the screen
[138]
william is 16 his mother claims him as a
[141]
dependent on her income tax return he
[143]
worked part-time on weekends during the
[145]
school year and full-time during the
[146]
summer he earned 12 500 in wages he did
[150]
not have any unearned income he must
[153]
file a tax return because he has earned
[155]
income only and his gross income is more
[158]
than twelve thousand four hundred
[160]
dollars so when you get your w-4 form
[163]
from your employer check that total
[166]
gross income number and see if it is
[168]
above or below the twelve thousand four
[170]
hundred dollar mark okay so might a lot
[173]
of you might have fallen into that
[175]
category there now we're going to do
[177]
unearned income only so this would be
[180]
like return on investments in the stock
[182]
market or something like that and the
[185]
number for unearned income only is one
[188]
thousand one hundred dollars
[190]
now keep in mind this is only if you
[193]
sell your position like if you're in the
[195]
stock market and you make money so if
[197]
you have a one thousand one hundred
[199]
dollars of profit but all that profit is
[202]
still held in the stocks and you have
[204]
not cashed out yet then this doesn't
[207]
apply to you now that's probably the
[209]
rarest situation here and now that leads
[211]
us into our last one with last one which
[214]
is both earned and unearned income and
[217]
for this section the irs has a great
[220]
worksheet here that we're gonna look at
[223]
okay so we are gonna be looking at the
[225]
bottom example example 2 to explain this
[228]
so
[229]
enter the dependents earned income plus
[231]
350 and as you can see that number is 3
[235]
100
[236]
which means they earned 2
[239]
hundred fifty dollars in earned income
[242]
okay then line two has the minimum
[244]
amount for unearned income here which is
[246]
one thousand one hundred dollars step
[249]
three you're gonna compare lines one and
[251]
two and enter the larger amount so for
[254]
us in this example the larger amount is
[257]
three thousand one hundred dollars
[258]
you're going to put that in the maximum
[260]
amount for earned income is twelve
[263]
thousand four hundred dollars
[265]
so you compare lines three and four and
[267]
you enter the smaller amount which is
[269]
again the three thousand one hundred
[271]
dollars so that is line five we're gonna
[274]
leave that there for just a second and
[276]
now we're gonna enter the dependents
[278]
gross income so if we come back up here
[281]
for joe he has a total of three thousand
[284]
three hundred fifty dollars in gross
[286]
income 600 bit is interest or unearned
[289]
income plus
[291]
2750 in earned income
[293]
so we put the thousand three hundred
[295]
fifty dollars down here in line six and
[298]
then finally if line six is more than
[301]
line five which in our case it is we
[304]
have three thousand three hundred fifty
[306]
dollars on line six
[308]
and three thousand one hundred dollars
[309]
on line five so if line six is more than
[312]
line five then the dependent must file
[315]
an income tax return so i'm gonna throw
[317]
a screenshot of a blank earned and
[320]
unearned income worksheet here on the
[323]
screen as you can see two and four the
[325]
minimum amount and the maximum amount
[326]
are always going to be the same
[328]
those never change so you can just put
[331]
in your numbers there and see if you
[333]
need to file an income tax return
[337]
if and only if you have both earned and
[340]
unearned income now another thing here
[342]
are some other filing requirements i'll
[345]
throw a screenshot on the screen here so
[348]
for the first part um dependent must
[351]
file tax return if he or she owes any
[354]
other taxes such as
[355]
that's all kind of random stuff it most
[358]
likely doesn't apply to you but just
[360]
read through it to make sure that it
[362]
doesn't what we want to look at is the
[364]
last two bullet points here so if you
[366]
have wages of over a hundred eight
[369]
dollars and 28 cents from a church or a
[372]
qualified church controlled organization
[374]
that is exempt from employer social
[376]
security and medicare taxes so if you've
[379]
worked for a church or something a
[381]
non-profit
[383]
then that might apply for you so just
[386]
look into that if you've worked for a
[388]
church also the last one if you have if
[391]
you are self-employed and you made at
[393]
least four hundred dollars then you have
[395]
to file a tax return as well okay so now
[398]
we know how to file and what you need to
[402]
know to file but like how do you
[405]
actually do it like what is the process
[407]
of going and filling in these sheets to
[410]
actually file your taxes and for this
[412]
you're going to just want to go to
[414]
irs.gov the irs website here and they
[417]
have a ton of information if you just go
[420]
and hover over file here you can get
[422]
information for individuals businesses
[425]
charities uh you can get filing for
[427]
individuals over here how to file when
[429]
where all of that stuff they got pay how
[433]
to pay on how to get a tax refund all
[436]
that stuff honestly it's a lot of
[438]
information so i'm not going to go
[439]
through it all in this video i recommend
[442]
you go and check out this website and
[444]
look at what you need to work out look
[446]
at for your specific situation and again
[449]
as i mentioned in the beginning of the
[450]
video i am not professional this is just
[453]
all of my research that i have done i
[455]
thought i would pass along to you guys
[457]
so make sure you talk with your parents
[459]
or a trusted financial advisor someone
[462]
like that who can help you for your
[464]
specific situation and help you actually
[467]
file if you need to but if you have any
[470]
questions please feel free to drop them
[472]
in the comments i will do my best to
[474]
answer them other than that i think
[477]
that's all for this video i hope you
[479]
enjoyed it i hope i explained it well
[481]
enough for you like i said in the
[483]
beginning it's not the most entertaining
[485]
video but it's been important and i'm
[488]
glad and proud of you for watching it so
[491]
thank you all again for watching and i
[492]
will hopefully see you in the next video
[495]
peace
