Estimating! | Mini Math Movies | Scratch Garden - YouTube

[7]
Oh hi everybody! Today I am going  to talk to you about numbers,
[12]
and counting, and estimating. And maybe  even bananas. Ho, I really like bananas.
[19]
OK, so one thing we use numbers for is when  we are counting. And sometimes when we are
[25]
counting and especially when we have to  count something quickly, we use estimating.
[32]
Estimating is kind of like guessing.  You all know what guessing is right?
[37]
Let’s try: right now, I want you to guess what is  behind me. I will give you a hint. It is a fruit,
[45]
and it is long, and yellow… can you  guess? That’s right, it’s a banana! Yay!
[51]
Because you did such a good job, it is  now time for a break. OK that is enough!
[58]
So when we guess something that is about  numbers, we call it estimating. In a minute,
[65]
I am going to show some more bananas, and you are  going to guess - or estimate - how many bananas
[72]
there are. You already said that! But first, let  us make sure we all know the numbers from one to ten.  n
[81]
Let’s all count to ten out loud, together. OK  ready? Here. We. Go! One, two, three, four, five, six,
[95]
seven, eight, nine, ten. Ho, good job! So, these  are all the numbers, or numerals, from one to ten.
[105]
And did you know that we can also show  numbers using bananas? Oh yes we can!
[112]
For example, this is what two bananas look  like. This is what five bananas look like,
[119]
and this is what ten bananas look like.  I will show you again. This is what two
[125]
bananas look like: one, two. This is what five  bananas look like: one, two, three, four, five.
[136]
And this is what ten bananas look like: one, two,  three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
[149]
So I am going to quickly show you some  different bananas, and I want you to
[154]
estimate how many bananas you  think there are. And remember,
[158]
because you are estimating - or guessing - it is  OK if you don’t know the exact number of bananas.
[166]
Are you ready to see some bananas!  Of course you are. Yay! Here. We. Go.
[173]
OK, that was a pineapple, not a  banana. Who put that pineapple there?
[177]
I did. Sorry!
[181]
OK let’s try again. Ready? Here. We. Go.
[186]
So, what was your estimate of  how many bananas there were?
[190]
Let’s count and find out. Bananas. I said  bananas! One, two, three bananas! Remember
[199]
two bananas look like this, so if we add one more  we know that two plus one is three. Three Bananas!
[210]
OK, you did such a good job, let’s  take a quick break. OK that’s enough!
[217]
Now, let us do some estimating again with a  different number of bananas! Ready? Here. We. Go.
[225]
So, what was your estimate of how many bananas  there were? Let’s count and find out. One,
[232]
two, three, four, five, six bananas. Remember that  five bananas look like this, so if we add one more
[244]
we know that five plus one is six. Six bananas!  If you estimated that there were six bananas, good
[253]
job! If you estimated there were five bananas,  also good job, because five is close to six.
[262]
Wanna know something? Of course you do! Six  bananas don’t always look exactly like this.
[269]
They could look like this and there would still  be six. They could also look like this and there
[276]
would still be six. They could also even all  have funny hats, and there would still be six!
[284]
OK, let us do some estimating one last time with a  different number of bananas! Ready? Here. We. Go.
[293]
So, what was your estimate of how many bananas  there were? Let’s count and find out. One,
[301]
two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight bananas.  Remember that five bananas look like this,
[312]
so if we add three more we know that  five plus three is eight. Eight bananas!
[321]
But maybe you estimated a different number,  and that’s OK! For example, remember that
[327]
bananas look like this. So if you take away two  bananas, we know that ten minus two is eight.
[336]
Eight Bananas! If you estimated that  there were eight bananas, good job!
[343]
If you estimated there were five or ten  bananas, also good job, because five
[349]
is kind of close to eight, and ten is also close  to eight too. If you estimated that there were
[356]
100 bajillion triple bananas, that is not so  good, because that is not even a real number.
[362]
OK, that is all the time we have today  for estimating. Don’t forget to subscribe
[367]
to our channel for more laughing and learning  from Scratch Garden. And did you know that we
[372]
have some other videos on counting, and even other  videos with bananas!? No it’s true! In fact,
[379]
I estimate that you will soon watch one of  our banana videos very soon. OK bye for now!
