dollars over the course of your career

thursday
[38]
hello and welcome to my channel i'm
[40]
kelly a career coach and professional
[42]
development specialist
[44]
i've spent the last two decades
[46]
mentoring job seekers
[47]
through the application process today
[50]
i'm going to give you
[51]
some advice regarding how to negotiate
[53]
your salary once you've received a job
[55]
offer
[56]
i've worked with thousands of job
[58]
seekers and the advice i'm going to give
[60]
you today has helped many of them
[62]
successfully negotiate
[63]
lucrative salaries and benefits packages
[66]
i would like you to experience the same
[68]
satisfaction first things
[70]
first you should always negotiate
[74]
your salary research has shown more than
[77]
20 percent of people
[78]
never negotiate their salary and women
[81]
are particularly hesitant to negotiate
[83]
i remember coaching a group of six job
[86]
seekers three men and three women
[88]
the first two men came back with job
[89]
offers and told the group what they
[91]
negotiated
[92]
the third person to get a job was one of
[94]
the women she came back to the group and
[96]
reported she accepted the initial offer
[99]
she negotiated nothing the sad thing was
[102]
the fourth successful job candidate
[104]
in that particular group was the other
[106]
male he was offered a job at the same
[108]
firm as the female
[109]
for the same exact position he got an
[112]
extra ten thousand dollars on his annual
[114]
salary a twenty thousand dollar signing
[116]
bonus and a relocation package
[118]
when he told the group about his success
[120]
i thought the woman that didn't
[121]
negotiate would burst into tears right
[123]
then and there
[124]
by the way when that woman had come back
[127]
after not negotiating i asked her why
[130]
she said she didn't think she would get
[132]
anything else and was afraid if she was
[134]
pushy they would rescind the offer
[136]
unless you act like a jerk and are
[138]
completely unreasonable the chance of
[140]
having an offer rescinded
[142]
is so slim there's a book by linda
[144]
babcock called women don't ask which
[146]
discusses the gender divide when it
[148]
comes to negotiations
[149]
both with jobs and in life in general
[152]
the most important detail i took away
[153]
from this book
[154]
was that only seven percent of females
[156]
attempt to negotiate their
[158]
first salary as opposed to 57 percent of
[160]
men
[161]
of the people who negotiate the average
[163]
salary increase is 7 percent
[165]
this can have massive repercussions in
[168]
terms of your lifetime earning potential
[170]
long story short negotiate when you
[173]
receive a job offer and the negotiation
[175]
begins
[176]
there are a few things to keep in mind
[179]
know your worth what is your current
[182]
salary
[183]
if you're taking a position at a higher
[185]
level you should be getting some kind of
[187]
raise
[188]
what do other people at this level and
[190]
in this company make
[192]
use your resources some people even if
[195]
you've just met them during the
[196]
interview
[197]
will be very forthcoming and offer the
[200]
information if you ask
[201]
keep in mind your training and
[203]
experience and use this to justify why
[206]
you should get a higher salary
[208]
ask for more than you want if you are
[211]
asked
[212]
for a number take what you want and add
[214]
10
[215]
because the employer will almost always
[217]
counter offer with something lower
[220]
if you want 50 000 it's best to ask for
[222]
55 because they may come back and say
[225]
well we normally pay 45 for this
[227]
position but i'll tell you what let's
[228]
split the difference
[229]
and meet in the middle how does 50 sound
[232]
voila you just got what you wanted
[235]
know your walk away number you can't ask
[239]
for a higher
[240]
salary because you just bought a new
[242]
house and send your kids to private
[243]
school
[244]
do not justify your salary based on
[247]
personal needs and wants
[249]
but you should know what it will cost
[251]
for you to live
[252]
if you need to take home 50 000 and at
[255]
the end of the day you're only going to
[257]
make 40
[258]
you just can't sustain your life so
[259]
you're going to have to say thanks but
[261]
no
[261]
thanks justify your salary
[265]
like i said before you can't use
[267]
personal reasons
[268]
to explain why you need a higher salary
[272]
but you can give a rundown of your
[273]
accomplishments and why you're worth
[275]
more also refer to how having you on the
[279]
team
[279]
will be worth more to the company in the
[281]
future if you bring clients with you
[283]
that will earn the firm an additional
[285]
million dollars a year they should be
[286]
able to find you some extra money
[289]
negotiations are about more than just
[292]
money
[293]
some companies and organizations simply
[296]
can't negotiate salary
[298]
but you may be able to negotiate other
[300]
things i've had clients negotiate
[302]
starting dates
[303]
flexible working schedules signing
[305]
bonuses one client of mine was told
[307]
there was a two-year wait list for a
[309]
parking spot
[310]
so she negotiated that and on the first
[313]
day of her job
[314]
she parked right out front another
[316]
client of mine was told there was a
[317]
90-day waiting period to get his
[319]
insurance
[320]
he said he couldn't go for three months
[321]
without insurance so the new employer
[324]
paid for health insurance through a
[326]
third party provider
[327]
when i moved to australia i knew i was
[330]
already at the top of the salary scale
[331]
for my position so i negotiated my visa
[334]
i said i didn't want a temporary visa i
[336]
wanted a permanent resident visa which
[338]
is similar to a green card in the u.s
[341]
having lived in several foreign
[342]
countries previously i know
[344]
visas are expensive and can be quite
[346]
problematic if they lapse or if you lose
[348]
your job
[349]
i didn't want to risk a future visa
[351]
problem
[352]
my employer agreed they handled the
[354]
paperwork and paid the fees for the visa
[356]
so i had permanent resident status
[358]
effective the day my contract began
[361]
be firm but polite you may not get
[363]
everything you want during the
[365]
negotiation
[366]
process but ask and stand your ground
[369]
if you fold quickly or give in at the
[371]
first sign of push back
[372]
you will lose whatever bargaining power
[375]
you have
[376]
and don't worry it's okay be assertive
[379]
just remain polite
[381]
and respectful and who knows maybe the
[383]
negotiation process won't work out in
[385]
the end
[386]
but if you maintain your professionalism
[388]
you never know
[389]
they might come back to you later on
[392]
even years down the track and ask if you
[394]
would reconsider working
[395]
for them because now they're in a
[398]
position to offer you more
[400]
i've actually had this happen for
[401]
several of my clients and ultimately
[403]
they benefited more from this situation
[407]
i hope these suggestions make you feel a
[409]
little bit more comfortable
[411]
about negotiating your salary if you
[413]
would like
[414]

[415]
