10 cheap purchases that improved my life - YouTube
Channel: Ali Abdaal
[0]
hey friends welcome back to the channel
[1]
in this video we're going to go over 10
[3]
cheap purchases that have improved my
[5]
quality of life
[6]
let's get into it coming in at number 10
[8]
on the list we have a physical alarm
[10]
clock
[10]
and this is really cool because before i
[12]
had one of these i used to use my phone
[14]
as an alarm clock and i'd have the phone
[15]
on my bedside table but inevitably it
[17]
would mean that i would spend hours and
[18]
hours scrolling through twitter browsing
[20]
instagram and
[21]
attempting to reply to messages on hinge
[23]
at night when i should have been
[24]
sleeping but ever since i got one of
[26]
these i now have the physical alarm
[27]
clock on my bedside table which means i
[29]
can have the phone across the room away
[30]
from my bed or even
[32]
in the kitchen on charge if i really
[33]
need to get up one morning and so for a
[35]
relatively cheap investment of like
[37]
between
[37]
5 and 20 quid depending on how fancy the
[39]
alarm clock is you can massively improve
[41]
your quality of sleep if you get one of
[43]
these coming in at number nine we have
[44]
the trusty electric toothbrush
[46]
now the only thing that you need to have
[48]
in an electric toothbrush if you have
[50]
one
[50]
is it needs to have a 30 second timer so
[53]
the cool thing about this one is that
[54]
you go
[57]
and then every 30 seconds it does like a
[59]
z
[60]
and it so it tells you when 30 seconds
[62]
are up and it tells you when two minutes
[63]
are up
[64]
so you can spend 30 seconds on each
[66]
quadrant of the mouth
[67]
and then you know when you've been
[68]
brushing for two minutes i've been using
[70]
this for the past year now
[71]
and i noticed a massive improvement in
[73]
like the whiteness of my smile and my
[75]
brother even commented on it when we
[77]
were recording our podcast he was like
[78]
oh your teeth look really white
[79]
and i said it's because i've been using
[81]
one of these time toothbrushes and he
[82]
bought one immediately
[83]
so you can get one of these for like 20
[85]
quid 30 quid just find the one that has
[87]
the 30 second timer on it it's
[88]
absolutely fantastic coming in at number
[90]
eight we have the trusty ukulele now i
[92]
started learning the ukulele when i was
[94]
in my second year of medical school
[95]
and really it was the first instrument
[97]
that i learned and i learned by
[98]
following youtube tutorials
[100]
i just really liked the idea of playing
[101]
the guitar but the ukulele seemed was it
[103]
was a lot cheaper because i got it for
[104]
like 15 quid off amazon
[106]
it was a lot cheaper and it seems a lot
[107]
easier to get started with the ukulele
[109]
and within like 10 minutes you can learn
[111]
to play the basic chords and then if you
[113]
practice around five or ten minutes a
[114]
day for about a week or two you get to a
[116]
point where you can like play songs on
[117]
the ukulele and you can like sing along
[119]
and it's really fun
[120]
and the ukulele was really my gateway
[121]
drug into the world of music
[123]
super easy to learn would highly
[124]
recommend i'll link to a cheap version
[126]
on amazon in the video description you
[128]
can basically get the cheapest one learn
[129]
how to play that and then if you want
[130]
you can upgrade to a slightly fancier
[132]
one
[132]
but yeah 15 pounds for my basic first
[134]
ukulele
[135]
it was pretty awesome and it got me into
[137]
the world of music at number six on the
[139]
list we have my absolute favorite
[141]
writing pad of all time
[142]
this is the pucker pad like i've tried
[145]
zillions and zillions of like writing a4
[146]
writing pads over the years and i always
[148]
keep coming back to the pucker pad
[149]
because it's like
[150]
the quality of the paper and the quality
[152]
of the vibes
[153]
and the feel and the look and the
[155]
general
[157]
spiritual essence that it puts out it's
[159]
just like second to none i quite like
[160]
the basic pocket pad originals i filled
[162]
up many of these in med school
[164]
now i'm using the pucker pad project
[165]
version which has the same quality of
[167]
paper but it's got these like dividers
[169]
uh because now i've got more money i can
[170]
afford like slightly better stationary
[172]
and so this is how i've been kind of
[173]
planning uh the book that i'm writing
[175]
and it's just really nice having like an
[177]
a4 pad sitting on my desk at all times
[179]
and i've got pens right sort of within
[181]
within arm's reach and so if i ever need
[183]
to write anything down
[184]
this there's just something nice about
[186]
being able to scribble it on an a4
[188]
pucker pad
[189]
rather than have to write it in an app
[190]
so highly recommend these these are
[192]
fantastic the best pads i've ever used
[194]
in my life at number six on the list we
[196]
have a trilogy of books by austin cleon
[198]
all of these are fantastic they're
[199]
really good they're very inspirational
[201]
and i have them
[202]
i have like physical copies of all three
[203]
on my desk at all times as part of my
[205]
desk setup in particular as you guys
[207]
know show your work was the book that
[208]
most changed my life
[209]
uh because it encouraged me to write
[210]
online a video over there if you want to
[212]
check that out
[213]
still like an artist is all about
[214]
stealing ideas like an artist and it
[215]
talks about the general idea that
[217]
nothing is original we don't need to
[218]
worry about having original ideas
[220]
we can still like artists and get ideas
[222]
from different sources and there's a
[223]
nice quote at the start on the nothing
[225]
is original chapter that says
[226]
the writer jonathan lethem has said that
[228]
when people call something original
[230]
nine times out of ten they just don't
[231]
know the references or the original
[233]
sources involved
[235]
so this is really cool and then his
[236]
third book keep going is all about how
[237]
to stay creative through the good times
[240]
and the bad
[240]
and so it's like a really nice like it's
[243]
very cheap by buying all these books it
[244]
takes like 20 minutes to read each of
[246]
them and i've sort of these are very
[247]
well
[247]
well thumbed through so anytime i'm
[249]
having a bit of a creative rut or i'm in
[251]
a bit of a slump
[252]
i just pick up one of them they always
[254]
live on my desk and i just grab one i
[256]
open it to a random page and i always
[257]
find inspiration so thank you austin for
[259]
that links to all those books down in
[261]
the video description
[262]
at number five we have the water bottle
[264]
i have a water bottle
[265]
on my desk now at all times just having
[267]
it on my desk and having it be
[268]
a slightly nice one that kind of goes
[270]
with the white vibe of the rest of my
[272]
desk
[272]
it's just been amazing because now i
[274]
drink so much more water and drinking
[275]
water
[276]
as they say is good for you and i've
[278]
noticed that on days where i drink more
[279]
water
[280]
i feel less fat i feel less bloated and
[282]
my skin feels like it's glowing
[283]
not sure how much of that is placebo but
[285]
yeah we were taught in medical school
[286]
that you should drink two liters of
[287]
water a day thanks to having a water
[289]
bottle on my desk this is now what i do
[290]
at number four we have the trusty deck
[292]
of cards i basically had a deck of cards
[294]
on my desk
[295]
close to hand for the last almost 10
[298]
years of my life
[299]
i got into doing close-up magic in 2011
[302]
after watching a chap called michael
[304]
vincent on pen and telefool us and
[305]
initially close-up magic started off as
[307]
a way of trying to
[308]
increase my sexual market value amongst
[310]
my peers at school but then when i got
[312]
to university and reinvented myself as
[314]
not a massive nerd i decided to continue
[316]
with my close-up magic
[317]
and i used to perform at balls and
[319]
parties and events around
[320]
the university and i used to get paid
[321]
for it and that was pretty good because
[323]
back in the day i wasn't making that
[324]
much money as i now do on this youtube
[325]
channel so
[326]
you know being paid to walk around
[328]
parties dressed up in a tuxedo and going
[330]
up to groups of people being like hey
[331]
you want to see a magic trick
[333]
um that was that was my jam back in the
[336]
day
[336]
and even now like i always have a deck
[338]
of cards on me because if i ever need
[339]
something to do with my hands
[341]
then i just do some flourishes with a
[342]
deck of cards because otherwise the
[344]
devil makes work for idle hands coming
[346]
in at number three we have the amazon
[348]
kindle
[348]
you can get these quite cheap it's
[349]
probably the most expensive item on the
[351]
list but like the cheapest amazon kindle
[353]
is sometimes like 50 or 60 dollars you
[355]
can get it super cheap
[356]
honestly the kindle is like one of the
[357]
physical items that's like most impacted
[359]
my life because just getting a kindle
[360]
lets you just gives you the ability to
[362]
read infinitely more books than you
[364]
would otherwise
[365]
these days anytime i get a book
[367]
recommendation i just buy it on kindle
[369]
immediately and i can start reading it
[371]
there and then
[371]
it's just absolutely amazing i've been
[373]
using a kindle basically every day since
[375]
2008
[376]
or whenever the first kindle came out
[377]
and yeah it's just so good i cannot
[379]
recommend it hardly enough i have a
[380]
video over there that talks more about
[381]
why
[381]
everyone should get an amazon kindle
[383]
this one is the kindle oasis it's a
[384]
little bit fancy you probably don't need
[385]
the oasis you could just go for the
[387]
kindle paperwhite or to be honest you
[388]
could just go for the bog standard
[389]
kindle depending on how much
[391]
money you want to save and i read this
[392]
every night before bed it's what i do
[394]
when i get into bed i take my mouth shut
[396]
after doing my skincare routine and then
[398]
i just read on the kindle until i fall
[400]
asleep
[400]
so huge huge huge impact on my quality
[402]
of life with a fairly cheap fairly small
[404]
device moving on to number two we have
[406]
this
[406]
this is a door stop i've probably got
[408]
the most bang for my buck
[410]
out of this purchase than anything else
[411]
in my life because when i was at
[413]
university i always used to have a
[414]
doorstop and it would always prop my
[416]
door open
[417]
these days probably not so relevant if
[419]
you're you know in covet times in the
[421]
pandemic
[422]
but once the world stops ending highly
[424]
recommend a doorstop for absolutely
[425]
everyone because if you're at university
[427]
or if you have an office
[428]
or if you're at home whatever mostly at
[430]
university propping your door open is
[432]
like the best thing ever
[432]
because you want to cultivate this
[435]
persona
[436]
where your friends who walk or walking
[438]
by feel that it's okay to interrupt you
[440]
while you're working because like if i
[441]
look back on my university experience
[443]
i don't at all remember those nights
[444]
where i was like oh i've got to work a
[446]
little bit harder to get like an extra 1
[448]
on this essay but because i was the sort
[450]
of person who people would feel
[451]
comfortable interrupting in the middle
[453]
of work
[453]
like those interruptions and those like
[456]
welcome distractions have turned into
[457]
friendships that are still lasting today
[459]
and so if you're the sort of person who
[461]
props the door open with a doorstop at
[462]
university or wherever you are
[464]
then it's just generally good vibes all
[466]
around and finally at the top of this
[468]
list one purchase that has immeasurably
[470]
improved my quality of life
[471]
is a subscription to skillshare who are
[473]
very kindly sponsoring this video if you
[475]
guys haven't heard by now skillshare is
[476]
an incredible online platform with
[478]
thousands of online classes from all
[479]
sorts of topics
[480]
if you're one of the first 1 000 people
[482]
to hit the link in the video description
[484]
you're going to get 40 off the
[486]
skillshare annual premium subscription
[488]
and that means you can watch the eight
[490]
different online classes that i've got
[491]
on skillshare
[492]
two of them are about studying for exams
[494]
two of them around productivity
[496]
one of them is around how to be happier
[497]
with lessons from stoicism and i've got
[499]
another one which is themed around
[500]
productivity for creators which is
[502]
coming out in a few weeks time
[503]
after your free trial is up the annual
[505]
subscription to skillshare is less than
[506]
10
[506]
a month that is an absolute no-brainer
[508]
for all of the value that you get
[510]
plus you should watch all of my classes
[511]
on skillshare because i think they're
[513]
pretty good and they've had pretty solid
[514]
reviews so if that sums up your stream
[515]
and you want to be more productive or
[517]
you want to study better for your exams
[518]
or you just want to live a happier life
[519]
with lessons from stoicism then hit the
[521]
link in the video description and sign
[522]
up to skillshare and then your life too
[524]
can be immeasurably improved as
[525]
mine has been over the years of having a
[527]
skillshare subscription so those were 10
[529]
relatively cheap purchases that have
[530]
improved my quality of life if you're
[532]
interested in finding more ways to
[533]
improve your life then check out this
[535]
very short playlist of life lessons that
[537]
i've learned over the last two years
[538]
there's two videos in that playlist they
[540]
each have about 20 lessons in them and
[541]
people have said that these these
[543]
lessons have also improved their life so
[544]
thank you so much for watching have a
[545]
lovely day and i'll see you in the next
[547]
video bye
