6 perennial flowers that bloom all summer - plus a bonus plant - YouTube
Channel: The Middle-Sized Garden
[0]
If you want to have beautiful borders, then it's聽
really important to include some perennials that聽聽
[5]
flower for a really long time - and these聽
are the ones that flower for months on end聽聽
[10]
and very often you can clip them back and then聽
they will have a second flowering. It's Alexandra聽聽
[14]
here from the Middle-sized Garden YouTube channel聽
and blog and i'm here at Doddington Place gardens聽聽
[19]
in Kent, in the Sunk garden, which has four聽
herbaceous borders, each one around a pond.聽聽
[27]
In my video on how to create beautiful borders,聽
I interviewed Tom Brown of West Dean gardens聽聽
[32]
and one of the best tips he gave was that if聽
you want to have flower color in your garden聽聽
[36]
all summer long, you should choose firework plants聽-
and those are plants that are just so showy, they聽聽
[41]
blaze brightly and people really remember them and聽
so they really carry the colour in your garden and聽聽
[46]
that's things like tulips and irises and alliums聽-
and iIll put that video in the description below,聽聽
[52]
but the other element of creating a聽
really long lasting long flowering border聽聽
[56]
is to choose these easy grow plants聽
that flower and flower and flower.聽聽
[60]
So I'm asking Amicia Oldfield who. with her husband聽
Richard, owns Doddington Place gardens聽聽
[65]
and the head gardener Lucy Adams to pick out six聽
plants which just go on and on flowering. I'll put聽聽
[71]
links to Doddington Place gardens and any other聽
resources we mention in the description below聽聽
[76]
and also time stamps to particular flowers, so if聽
you want to go back and have a bit of a look at聽聽
[82]
one particular flower, then you can just click聽
on the time stamp. If you're new here, the Middle聽聽
[86]
sized Garden uploads once a week with free videos聽
with tips, ideas and inspiration for your garden, so聽聽
[92]
do if you want to see those videos when you open聽
up Youtube, then do click the subscribe button,聽聽
[97]
and if you'd like YouTube to tell you when a new聽
video is uploaded, then tap the notifications bell.聽聽
[103]
These plants are really quite easy grow plants -聽
Doddington Place gardens is in southeast England, so聽聽
[108]
that equates roughly to a hardiness zone,聽
a USDA hardiness zone of eight or nine,聽聽
[113]
but actually many of these six plants will grow聽
in a much lower zone - it'll be from four to nine,聽聽
[118]
so that means they will deal with really quite聽
cold winters - down to minus 20 Celsius.聽聽
[125]
The other thing to remember when you're聽
choosing a plant as well as hardiness is聽聽
[130]
how pollinator friendly it is - all these plants聽
are very pollinator friendly and also one of the聽聽
[136]
problems with easy grow plants can be that聽
when they're easy grow in one place,聽聽
[140]
they're actually quite invasive in another. Now聽
none of the six plants here that we're mentioning聽聽
[146]
are invasive in either the UK, the USA or Australia聽
but i think it's important to stay aware of what's聽聽
[153]
invasive near you. It's also worth noting that each聽
plant has got varieties, so, for example, there is a聽聽
[159]
variety of euphorbia which is invasive in the聽
United States but most of the other varieties聽聽
[164]
aren't, so just check the varieties because looking聽
at varieties and getting the right variety is聽聽
[170]
often the key to getting good long flowering, disease free and other things like that.聽聽
[176]
And the next thing to think about is which way聽
your border faces - if you've got a south facing聽聽
[179]
border, then plants that like south facing border聽
will do very well there. Now one of the interesting聽聽
[185]
things about being here in the Sunk garden is that聽
actually there are four borders around a pond and聽聽
[192]
so of course each border has a slightly different聽
aspect, so these favorite plants had to be chosen聽聽
[197]
as plants that would do well in several aspects聽
not plants that really needed say a south-facing聽聽
[203]
border, so that's another interesting thing about聽
these really easy care plants . Now i'm going聽聽
[209]
to ask Amicia for her choice of three plants.
Well, the plants that that comes to mind聽聽
[216]
first of all is a penstemon - I know some聽
people call them penstemons - you聽聽
[221]
can get them in a wide range of colors and they聽
are have just begun flowering in the last week or so聽聽
[227]
and i think they go until November or December - I've聽
even picked some, I think, in December, which is聽聽
[233]
pretty staggering, isn't it - and you do have to cut聽
them back but they're quite tall. You could create聽聽
[238]
a great mass of them and they look very very聽
good in the border, and you can get really lovely聽聽
[243]
pinky ones like Sour Grapes or Stapleford Gem.
We've got a pink one here- I can't remember聽聽
[249]
what that's called. There's Alice Hindley, there are聽
all sorts of them and they're actually one of the聽聽
[254]
plants that I liked the most when i first came here聽-
before I really knew anything about gardening, and聽聽
[260]
they're what's called 'good doers'. We did this聽
sunken garden - we forget when you do聽聽
[266]
things, but we worked out we did it 11 years聽
ago - so they're still going and they show no聽聽
[272]
sign of giving up and we've got one in the Rock聽
garden which we did at roughly the same time聽聽
[276]
and that's still looking really great. The next聽
plant is euphorbias. I'd like to talk about them聽聽
[282]
generally - euphorbias are very good value because聽
they're very interesting shapes and they're leafy聽聽
[289]
they're not an obvious flowery plant. A lot of聽
people when they start off gardening just think of endless聽聽
[294]
flowers, but actually I think the more you garden,聽
the more you realize that the contrasting leaf聽聽
[298]
shapes are very interesting. And euphorbias flower聽
for ages - the one that we have is Characias which is a聽聽
[305]
big one. It's only going over now and it's been in聽
flowers since, oh I don't know April or something聽-聽
[311]
that's months and months, isn't it? You have to聽
be a bit careful because the seeds obviously fly聽聽
[316]
everywhere and i'm always pulling out seedlings聽
more than I've ever done actually before in the聽聽
[320]
last few years, but there are a wide range of聽
euphorbias and I think they're really excellent聽聽
[325]
plants to have in the garden. Geraniums is the name聽
of a plant that everybody knows, isn't it? 聽聽
[331]
But there are all sorts of rather special ones聽
and we have one here called it's called Armenian聽聽
[336]
Cranesbill - it's quite a shocking pink - magenta聽
perhaps is a better term for it - I don't know聽-聽
[343]
but it's quite a large voluptuous plant and it聽
gets quite high and it's also quite floaty at the聽聽
[349]
same time, so it's a very good plant in a border聽
and what I recommend is repeating all these things.聽聽
[357]
If you look at successful borders, in my opinion,聽
they do quite a lot of repetition we actually here聽聽
[364]
don't have repetition as such, in each border but聽
we've got four squares and we repeat the plants聽聽
[370]
in the different squares, so that makes it cohesive聽
and brings it all together and then we put little聽聽
[377]
pops of color - little different things in at聽
the same time- the geranium stay in the ground聽聽
[381]
the whole year. We cut them back by the end of聽
the summer in August when it gets so hot and dry聽and
[386]
the leaves start to go a bit brown, so we cut them聽
back then, but they do spring back and they are in聽聽
[392]
flower - I don't know how long - they've been in聽
flower for now three weeks or so and they're聽聽
[395]
going to go on and on and on until the autumn, and聽
they look very good with dahlias, and we have聽聽
[400]
quite a lot of brightly colored day lilies and they聽
look good with those. And now i'm going to ask Lucy聽聽
[405]
Adams, head gardener, for her choice of three plants.聽
A really good easy plant - Knautia macedonica聽聽
[412]
or the Macedonian scacious - beautiful color聽-
deep crimson like a pincushion flower on it.聽
[420]
It flowers from May to September and if聽
you can keep on top of the dead heading,聽聽
[425]
that will keep it flowering really well. Bees love it, it looks good in most mixed聽聽
[431]
herbaceous beds. It does tend to have a bit of a聽
sprawling habit so probably not one for the front聽聽
[437]
of beds, although if you are wanting it towards聽
the front of your bed then I would recommend聽聽
[443]
either giving it a 'chelsea chop' before it starts聽
putting on its long shoots for flowering and that聽聽
[449]
will just give it a bit more strength, or if you've聽
got birch stick supports, just let it weave its way聽聽
[455]
through some of those. So a 'Chelsea chop' -聽
it's called that because you do it in May聽-
[459]
as the plant is putting on its lush growth.聽
In order to reduce the flopping that you get with聽聽
[465]
certain plants like phloxes - if you聽
take off about a third of their height, then it will give聽聽
[473]
that strength to the stem and it will avoid it聽
doing the the complete flop when it's flowering -聽聽
[479]
so if you don't want to be or you haven't got聽
the materials to go around staking everything,聽聽
[484]
it's quite a quick and easy thing to do. And聽
number two is an Astrantia. I just love Astrantia聽聽
[489]
- they're just such beautiful flowers,聽
I think they're also known as the Masterwort -聽聽
[496]
there's huge variety of them, we've got various聽
different pink ones like Claret, Shaggy, Roma聽聽
[505]
and they hold their flower really well,聽
they're flowering from very late spring through聽聽
[513]
early summer and then once they've flowered,聽
you can deadhead them and you'll get a second聽聽
[518]
flowering and they produce nice big clumps, they will grow in size pretty quickly, they聽聽
[526]
like a fairly fertile, rich but well draining聽
soil, full sunshine, partial shade - you聽聽
[533]
know, they will do well in most soils as聽
long as it's聽聽
[538]
nutrient-rich. We always put our garden compost on聽
in the spring because it also then helps as a weed聽聽
[542]
suppressant as well and they always do well with聽
that. The third may seem very unoriginal but roses,聽
[549]
roses - there's a reason why they're so popular and聽
why they're everyone's favorite. If you can get聽聽
[553]
one of the modern repeat flowering聽
shrub roses, they go well with a herbaceous scheme,聽聽
[560]
they go well on their own, they go well as a聽
backdrop, they smell amazing, they flower and聽聽
[566]
flower and flower, and as long as you can keep聽
on top of the dead heading, then you have a good聽聽
[570]
summer long display. I think in terms of choosing your type聽
of rose, you want to go for more of a bush rose聽-聽
[577]
one of the modern shrub roses - which are fairly聽
easy plants to grow - actually, they're not too聽聽
[583]
pernickety, we always give ours a good feed - they聽
get a seaweed feed about four times a year,聽聽
[592]
so once in the spring and probably another just聽
before flowering and then they'll get another in聽聽
[598]
the end of autumn once they finish flowering,聽
just to harden them off before winter.聽聽
[604]
I tend to prune mine in my herbaceous beds聽
a little bit higher than you would necessarily聽聽
[610]
if you're growing the roses on their own. In聽
the winter I leave them a little bit taller聽聽
[614]
then the flowers will stand out over some of the聽
much higher growing perennials that we've got聽聽
[619]
in the garden - that's Felicia and it's聽
just an amazing scent - it just flowers聽聽
[625]
from now through to August, then聽
you have a little bit of a down time,聽聽
[630]
when it's - you know - looking a little bit quiet and聽
then again it'll come back so it's a great rose.聽聽
[637]
As I was leaving , I couldn't resist a bonus plant聽
because these Anthemis just look so gorgeous聽聽
[643]
and they're just lovely mounds of light, cheerful聽
colour in the border. So iIve actually added this聽聽
[649]
one as my own choice. Anthemis is also known as聽
golden Marguerite or Dyer's chamomile and they聽聽
[656]
establish very quickly into lovely clumps and once聽
they're established, they're very drought tolerant,聽聽
[662]
if you keep dead heading, they'll go on聽
flowering for about three months and Lucy聽聽
[665]
also has a clever trick - what I generally do聽
is the Chelsea chop on the front half聽聽
[673]
and then that supports the back half, and then聽
when that's finished having its first flush of聽聽
[678]
flowers, this one's flowering, then you can deadhead聽
that back to the new buds, and then you get that聽聽
[684]
sort of continuous flowering - that just extends it聽
that bit longer - I've pulled together all our聽聽
