How to improve your Gas Mileage - YouTube

The airflow sensor is a key component of your  fuel system, it's one of the main sensors that  

control the air fuel ratio of your vehicle and yes  that means gas mileage, it's also the sensor that never gets serviced when you take your car in for service.  

In this video, I'm going to show you how to clean your airflow sensor

to assure you're getting the most miles per gallon on your Honda Element. 

The airflow sensor sits on top of the air filter assembly, it's attached by two Phillips screws and has a

connector that needs to be removed, its job  is to measure the amount of air that enters your engine 

over time the airflow sensor becomes dirty due to the high amount of dirty air  

that's is full of exhaust fumes dust and debris, that  passes by that airflow sensor, without a proper  

signal from the airflow sensor your computer  won't know how much fuel the engine needs  

which can cause the vehicle to burn more  fuel more quickly than it should, now that  

you know what the airflow sensor does, let's get  started cleaning it. there's two Phillips screws  

and a connector to remove the connector just push  it here and remove the connector right here don't  

pull on the wires you want to pull it off with  the connector next we'll just take the screwdriver  

and loosen it and then loosen the other one what  you don't want to happen is those screws to drop  

so take care when you take these off so i'm  going to take this off nice and slowly and  

i'm going to put my hand right on the screw  and pull it off then i'm going to set it aside

and go get the other one the same way

make sure it's loose take it off  hold it real tight here set it aside

now all i have to do is remove

the airflow sensor bam and  this is what it looks like

what we use to clean it is a electronics cleaner  they actually have mass airflow sensor cleaners  

but it's the same thing let's get cleaning these  are the wires in your airflow sensor and this is  

what needs to be cleaned spray the wires for a  couple of seconds using the electronics cleaner

then let it dry that's it now once it's clean  let's go ahead and put this back together  

as you can see here there's a little o-ring  right there just make sure that o-ring's on there  

set it on we'll go right  in and then once again your

screws i would do these screws one at a time  don't try to hold them both in your hand put it on

handle with care

i'm just going to snug that one down

grab the next screw and then  the screwdriver handle with care

go you just want to tighten them up

and remember under those screws  that's just plastic so don't  

get hercules on me then take your connector  and just push back in make sure it clicks

now that we're done cleaning our airflow  sensor doing this in more severe cases  

will also help jerking hesitation misfire and  rough idle don't forget to replace your air filter
