[18]
there's much talk about being the first
[21]
mover in the business world now what
[23]
exactly is a first mover well the
[26]
classic definition is the ability to be
[29]
better than your competitors as a result
[31]
of being first in the market of first
[34]
with a new product let me give you some
[36]
examples Gillette in safety raises
[39]
solely in personnel zeros coca-cola in
[43]
soft drinks all three are great examples
[46]
of the first mover advantage check this
[49]
out
[50]
Gillette his brand value of 16 billion
[53]
US dollars on Forbes in the year 2019
[57]
what about Sony 70 billion u.s. dollars
[60]
in revenue in 2019
[63]
what about coal people in more than 200
[66]
countries during 1.9 billion servings of
[70]
coke every single day these are
[73]
certainly success stories on the first
[75]
mover advantage but what about companies
[78]
like Netscape the first to market an
[81]
internet browser it got overtaken by
[85]
Microsoft's Explorer and who remembers
[88]
the Palm Pilot the Palm Pilot was the
[91]
first PDA successfully marketed
[93]
worldwide but he got purchased by
[95]
hewlett-packard in 2010 and ended
[98]
production altogether in 2011 he got
[102]
overtaken by smartphones whoever
[104]
remembers Friendster it was a social
[107]
network started in 2003 and he certainly
[111]
had the first mover advantage of a
[113]
Facebook but Facebook had the first
[115]
improver advantage how do I know well
[119]
fast-forward to today and Facebook is a
[122]
global billion-dollar monster but
[124]
Friendster couldn't really find its
[126]
footing having to switch from social
[129]
networking to social gaming before
[132]
finally closing down altogether in the
[134]
year 2018 now it's the same case with
[137]
Google and Alta Vista Auto Vista was a
[140]
search engine founded in nineteen
[142]
95 and had the first mover advantage
[146]
over Google which only started in 1998
[149]
the end without AltaVista was purchased
[153]
by Yahoo in 2003 while Google on the
[156]
other hand has gone public in Nasdaq
[157]
hires over a hundred thousand employees
[160]
and recorded over 136 billion u.s.
[165]
dollars in revenue in 2018 as the
[168]
world's most dominant search engine in
[171]
all these examples what is the learning
[174]
lesson only this and pay attention you
[177]
don't have to be a first mover to
[180]
succeed I recently watched a TED talk by
[183]
organizational psychologist Adam grant
[185]
entitled how do creative people come up
[189]
with great ideas in that presentation
[192]
grant he said that his insights into
[194]
original thinkers and basically got into
[197]
their mindset now here's the interesting
[200]
bit he mentioned that first mover's
[202]
actually had a failure rate of 47%
[206]
compared with only eight percent for the
[209]
improvers concluding that is much easier
[212]
to improve on someone else's idea than
[215]
to create something new from scratch got
[218]
an idea to change the world
[220]
go launch it there's certainly value and
[223]
boldness in bringing something fresh to
[225]
the market you want to improve on
[227]
something that already exists get to it
[230]
right away the lesson is this friends
[233]
you don't always have to launch
[235]
something new to change the entire world
[237]
you don't always have to be a first
[239]
mover you can always be a first
[241]
improver gradually improving on existing
[245]
ideas and changing the world for the
[247]
better
[248]
as well I hope you enjoyed this video
