Revealing My $75,000 Roth IRA | Vanguard Index Funds - YouTube
Channel: Stephanie Talks Money
[0]
I just reached a super exciting milestone
[2]
for my Roth IRA.
[4]
It just hit a balance of $75,000.
[8]
And to celebrate this accomplishment
[10]
I'm going to reveal to you what's in my Roth IRA.
[13]
Now the intent of this reveal
[14]
is to show you that you can do the same thing too.
[17]
I started my Roth IRA 10 years ago.
[20]
So this is a result of 10 years of investing
[24]
and dollar cost averaging.
[25]
And when I started my Roth IRA
[27]
I wasn't maxing it out.
[28]
I was only putting in $50 a month.
[31]
And then a few years after I opened it
[34]
that's when I started getting really serious
[35]
about personal finance and investing.
[37]
And that's when I started maxing out my Roth IRA.
[40]
I have my Roth IRA through Vanguard
[42]
and all I invest in my Roth聽
IRA is Vanguard index funds.
[46]
So enough of me talking.
[47]
I know you just want to see what I have.
[49]
And so I'm going to go through each fund I have
[51]
and explain why I have it
[53]
and maybe some reasons why
[54]
you might be interested in investing in it too.
[56]
So here is my index fund.
[58]
You can see I have a balance of $75,522.14.
[65]
My largest holding is VFIAX
[67]
the S&P 500 index fund.
[70]
I have a little over $29,000
[72]
in my S&P 500 index fund
[74]
and that's about 39% of my portfolio.
[77]
Now I have invested in this fund since day one.
[81]
And it's all because of Warren Buffett.
[83]
In a letter to shareholders that he wrote
[85]
I believe it was in 2014
[88]
he told the shareholders that if he were to pass
[91]
he would direct his wife to invest 90%
[95]
of their money into an S&P 500 index fund
[98]
and he specifically called out Vanguard.
[101]
That is primarily the reason why
[103]
I opened a Vanguard account in the first place.
[106]
And since he believes so strongly
[108]
in investing in an S&P 500 index fund
[111]
and he's a great investor himself
[113]
I decided that that's where
[114]
I would direct a lot of my money as well.
[117]
*meow*
[118]
Fiona agrees!
[119]
VFIAX tracks the S&P 500
[121]
so it's a collection of
[123]
the 500 largest stocks in the market.
[125]
If we just take a quick look at the fund profile
[128]
you'll see that in one year this fund grew 40%
[133]
That's insane.
[134]
And if you look at other years they have on here
[137]
like 3 year, 5 year, it's around 15%.
[141]
And you have to look at the largest holdings
[143]
because these are companies
[144]
that everyone invests in anyway.
[147]
Apple, Microsoft Alphabet,
[149]
Amazon, Facebook, Tesla,
[152]
Berkshire Hathaway,
[153]
NVIDIA, Chase, and Johnson & Johnson.
[156]
The S&P 500 is made up of very good stocks
[160]
and this is a great index fund
[161]
to get good exposure and growth
[164]
for your long-term investments.
[166]
My next largest holding is VDADX
[168]
Vanguard's Dividend Appreciation Index Fund
[171]
and this makes up a little聽
over 21% of my portfolio.
[176]
This fund has great dividends
[178]
and that's why I selected聽
this fund for my Roth IRA
[181]
Because dividends in a Roth IRA are not taxed
[185]
so all this dividend income聽
I'm getting in my Roth IRA
[188]
is reinvested and it's not taxed.
[190]
If we take a look at the fund profile
[192]
And for those of you who聽
aren't familiar with VDADX
[195]
it is a fund that focuses on dividend stocks
[198]
and companies that increase
[199]
their dividend consistently over time.
[202]
And let's look at the growth聽
of this fund for one year.
[205]
It's 34%
[207]
That's unheard of.
[208]
And if in case you're wondering
[210]
about the top 10 largest holdings
[213]
again some really great dividend companies.
[215]
Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson,
[217]
JPMorgan Chase, Walmart,
[219]
Visa, United Health, Home Depot,
[222]
Procter & Gamble
[223]
and the list goes on and on.
[225]
This fund does have a higher dividend yield
[228]
than most the other funds
[229]
and it's primarily because it's a dividend fund.
[231]
If you don't want to pick聽
individual dividend stocks
[233]
for your portfolio
[234]
a dividend index fund is a great choice
[237]
because you'll still get a higher dividend yield
[239]
compared to other index funds.
[241]
The third largest holding in my Roth IRA is VTIAX
[245]
Vanguard's Total International Stock Index Fund.
[248]
I decided to invest in an international index fund
[252]
to get exposure to companies聽
that are outside the US.
[254]
This diversifies my portfolio
[256]
meaning I spread out my risk even more.
[259]
Plus just because a company is outside the US
[262]
doesn't mean it's a bad company.
[263]
There are plenty of great companies out there
[265]
that we don't invest in
[267]
because we focus on US stocks.
[269]
So let's take a look at this since.
[271]
This is an international index fund
[272]
so we need to look at other things
[274]
that we don't normally consider
[276]
when looking at US index funds.
[278]
And the first is the composition of the portfolio
[280]
which is how the regions of the world
[283]
make up this portfolio.
[285]
The largest part of this portfolio
[287]
at 40% is Europe
[288]
and then you've got about 25% each
[291]
of emerging markets and Asia Pacific.
[294]
You've got about 7% north america.
[296]
So that would include companies
[298]
in Mexico and Canada.
[301]
And under 1% of Middle聽
Eastern companies and other.
[304]
Now I can guarantee you
[305]
in looking at this list of top ten holdings
[308]
you're going to recognize
[309]
pretty much every company on here.
[311]
Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung,
[314]
TenCent Holdings, Nestle, Alibaba,
[317]
ASML, Roche, Toyota,
[320]
LVMH, which is the luxury brands,
[323]
and Novartis.
[324]
As you can see,
[325]
this international fund pulls from
[327]
various different regions
[328]
and various different companies of different types
[331]
and that's why I like to聽
include it in my portfolio.
[333]
Because it allows me to grab
[335]
pieces of the markets here and there
[337]
across the world.
[338]
And next we have VIMAX.
[340]
VIMAX is the mid-cap index fund
[343]
and VIMAX makes up almost 11% of my portfolio.
[346]
I wanted to invest in a mid cap
[348]
because those are notorious for large growth.
[351]
Plus those companies tend聽
to be a little bit smaller
[354]
and it's good to have exposure
[356]
to large companies and small companies
[358]
in your portfolio.
[359]
If you look at the performance
[361]
it's had 47% growth in the last year.
[365]
In three and five years it's 16% and 15%.
[368]
Again excellent growth for an index fund.
[371]
Now let's look at some of the stocks in here.
[374]
IDEXX Laboratories, DocuSign, Chipotle,
[378]
and the list goes on.
[378]
And coming in at about 7.5%
[381]
of my portfolio is VSMAX.
[384]
VSMAX is a small cap index fund.
[386]
I wanted to invest in small cap funds because
[388]
again they have the potential for more growth.
[392]
Now this is a smaller portion of my portfolio
[394]
because they are more risky
[396]
but I think the potential for growth
[397]
outweighs the risk.
[398]
So let's take a quick peek聽
at the fund profile page.
[402]
Okay so the growth in one year is 56%.
[406]
That's the highest out of any fund
[407]
we've looked at so far.
[409]
And the 3, 5, and 10 year are all pretty much
[411]
in line with other index funds.
[413]
And if you look at the 10 largest holdings
[415]
a lot of people haven't heard of these.
[417]
I'm looking at this list right now
[419]
and the only two I've heard聽
of are IDEX and Entegris.
[422]
Everything else, I don't know what they do,
[425]
but you know what they grow a lot
[427]
and they make me money.
[428]
And the very last fund I聽
have in my Roth IRA is VBTLX
[432]
Vanguard's Total Bond Market Index Fund.
[435]
It makes up around 7% of my Roth IRA.
[439]
And as you see,
[439]
I don't have a lot of bonds in my Roth IRA.
[442]
7% is a little too small for my portfolio
[445]
considering my timelin
[446]
but I do have bonds in my 401k.
[450]
And I have more than 7% bonds in my 401k.
[453]
I think right now it's around 15%.
[456]
So I feel like between the 15% bonds in my 401k
[460]
and the 7% bonds in my Roth IRA
[463]
that averages out to around where I want to be
[465]
in terms of my overall portfolio
[467]
and the percentage of bonds.
[469]
There's two reasons why I聽
have bonds in my Roth IRA.
[472]
The first is that the interest聽
from the bonds is not taxed.
[476]
As I mentioned before,
[477]
dividends are not taxed in a Roth IRA.
[480]
So by having all of my bonds聽
in a non-taxable account
[483]
I don't have to pay any taxes on my bond interest.
[487]
And the second reason I invest in bonds
[490]
because I want a little bit聽
of stability in my portfolio.
[494]
Bonds do not grow very fast.
[496]
These are funds you want to invest in
[497]
if you want to keep your money relatively safe.
[500]
You won't match the market
[502]
but that's not the point of a bond.
[504]
Ew, one year is actually negative.
[506]
That's terrible.
[507]
But 3 year, 5 year, 10 year
[510]
you're getting between 2% and 5% returns.
[513]
So again this is to keep your money stable
[515]
and it's not to grow your money.
[517]
And ideally as you get closer聽
and closer to retirement age
[521]
you would want to move more of your money
[523]
towards bonds so that way
[525]
you don't risk a huge downturn in the market
[527]
and losing all your money right before you retire.
[530]
And that's what got me over聽
$75,000 dollars in my Roth IRA!
[534]
I really hope you enjoyed this peek
[535]
into my Vanguard index fund Roth IRA.
[538]
If you liked this
[539]
please let me know in the comments below.
[541]
Maybe I'll do some kind of other portfolio reveal.
[544]
But the main message
[544]
I want for you to take from this video
[546]
is that you can do this too.
[548]
I've got $75,000 because I聽
saved and invested for 10 years.
[552]
Investing in a Roth IRA is really easy.
[555]
All you have to do is open an account
[557]
and start investing money聽
and dollar cost averaging.
[560]
That's it!
[561]
And then in 10 years you聽
might be able to have $75,000.
