[2]
I'll be covering all the new features that have come
[3]
to Acorns, sharing my experience after using the app
[6]
for two years and I'll also briefly touch on how
[8]
the Acorns app compares to other popular investing apps.
[10]
(upbeat music)
[15]

[36]
on my blog on my website, I'll link that down below,
[39]
as well as my referral link,
[40]

[42]
when joining Acorns.
[43]
So I've been using the Acorns app myself now
[45]
for about two years.
[46]
It was actually one of the first three investing apps
[48]
I ever started using when I first got into investing,
[51]
and I would have to say that the Acorns app
[52]
has probably been by far the simplest
[55]
and cleanest app over that time frame.
[57]
Now don't get me wrong, Acorns has continued
[59]
to add new features and constantly update their app
[62]
for us users, which I really appreciate,
[64]
but they've kept the app relatively clutter-free,
[66]
easy to navigate, they've made it a really
[68]
user-friendly experience, especially for newer investors.
[71]
Now, if you're new to the Acorns app, you may be wondering,
[73]
well, Erik, what actually is the Acorns app?
[76]
Well, let me explain.
[77]
The Acorns app is actually a popular micro investing app
[80]
that makes it easy for new investors
[82]
to invest in the stock market, through their prebuilt
[84]
and diversified portfolios.
[86]
So they already have the portfolio investment portfolios
[89]
prebuilt and designed for you.
[90]
You get to choose which ones you want to invest in,
[92]
and I'll get into that in just a second,
[94]
but the app is available on both Android and iOS devices.
[98]
So let's now take a second and talk about how the Acorns app
[100]
actually works because they do have several built-in
[103]
automation tools that help make it easy to invest
[105]
without really having to think about it.
[107]
Now they do this through a couple different ways
[109]
and the first way is called their Round-Ups feature.
[111]
Now the Acorns app was initially built
[114]
on this Round-Ups feature.
[115]
It's basically investing the spare change
[117]
from your everyday purchases.
[118]
So on the homepage of the app here,
[120]
you'll notice that if you go on where it says
[121]
to Invest for Your Future, if you click on that,
[124]
it'll open up your Core Investment account
[126]
and you'll see where it says Round-Ups Settings.
[128]
If you open up that,
[130]
this is where you can turn on a round-up.
[131]
So essentially with Round-Ups,
[133]
you can link unlimited debit or credit cards
[135]
to your Acorns account, and you can turn on Round-Ups here.
[138]
And what that does is anytime you make a purchase
[140]
for your everyday purchases, if you're at a restaurant,
[142]
if you're doing any online shopping,
[144]
Acorns will then round up that purchase
[146]
to the nearest dollar or the amount you set,
[148]
because you could set whole dollar round-ups
[150]
or less if you'd like, and it will take that spare change
[153]
and set it aside for you in a pool.
[155]
And once you have reached at least $5 worth
[158]
of spare round-up change,
[159]
Acorns will then automatically invest that money
[162]
into your Acorns Investment Portfolio.
[165]
Now, as you notice, you can actually turn this feature
[167]
on and off at any time where it says Round-Ups.
[169]
If you want to turn that feature back on, just click that,
[171]
turn it off, hit that.
[173]
Now the Round-Ups feature
[174]
is the bread and butter of the Acorns app,
[176]
because it does allow you to invest passively
[178]
without having to think about it,
[179]
but you don't have to use it if you don't want to,
[181]
you can always turn that off right there, just like that.
[183]
And instead you can choose One-Time.
[185]
Where it says One-Time,
[186]
you can manually make a one-time lump sum investment,
[189]
just the same.
[190]
So let's say you want to invest $5, $25, $50
[193]
or a hundred dollars as it says,
[194]
you can choose any one of those,
[196]
or you can put a custom amount.
[197]
So you do have that option.
[199]
You also have the option to automate recurring deposits
[201]
into your Acorns account.
[203]
And that is beneath Round-Ups Settings
[204]
where it says Recurring.
[206]
And on this page, you can set up recurring deposits directly
[208]
into your Acorns investment account.
[210]
Simply toggle on that switch right there,
[212]
you can set your custom amount, say you want to invest $5,
[215]
you can set recurring amount and you can choose the cycle.
[218]
You can say, I want to invest this daily, weekly or monthly.
[222]
And you can even set the day of the month
[224]
that you'd like this recurring deposit to occur.
[226]
So it does give you a lot of customization.
[229]
Again, you could say I'd like to invest $5 every week,
[232]
you can back out of there,
[233]
you can change that to,
[234]
"I'd like to invest $50 every month."
[238]
So you really have a lot of customization
[240]
to automate your investing and make it very passive
[242]
and really like to invest without having
[245]
to really worry about it or think about it.
[247]
And again, just like the Round-Ups feature you can turn on
[249]
and off the Recurring Deposit feature at any time.
[252]
The third automation tool they have is actually
[255]
not only earning, but investing cash back directly
[258]
into your Acorns portfolio.
[260]
Now, I really like this feature with Acorns
[261]
because a lot of other apps allow you to earn cashback,
[264]
there's a lot of cashback portals online,
[266]
but the Acorns app takes it a step further
[269]
because they allow you to not only earn cashback,
[271]
but actually invest that cashback
[273]
right into your Acorns portfolio.
[275]
So there are two ways to actually earn
[277]
and invest cashback on Acorns.
[279]
The first way is through their Found Money program.
[282]
So you want to click where it says,
[284]
Earn Found Money on the Homepage Here,
[286]
and you could see I've earned some cashback so far
[288]
through everyday purchases using Acorns.
[291]
Now you'll notice here,
[292]
there are hundreds of major retailers, as you can see,
[295]
you have major ones like Amazon, eBay, Apple you'll find,
[300]
pretty much all major, Walmart you'll find Chevron even,
[303]
so you could even cashback for gas and invest that,
[306]
it's really crazy how many options they have here,
[308]
but there are hundreds of retailers that Acorns
[311]
has partnered with that you can earn cashback from.
[314]
So the way it works is you can link again,
[319]
an unlimited amount of debit or credit cards
[321]
to your Acorns app,
[323]
and when you purchase any one of these retailers
[325]
through the Acorns investment portal,
[327]
you'll then earn that cashback and have it invested directly
[330]
into your Acorns investment portfolio.
[332]
Now, the second way to earn cashback through Acorns
[336]
is actually through Local Found Money.
[338]
So their main Found Money portal,
[340]
which I just showed you guys here, which has hundreds
[342]
of major online retailers is for online purchases.
[346]
But now they've recently added Local Found Money,
[348]
and if you click on that,
[349]
that will open up a Google Map near you,
[352]
and it will show you all kinds of local restaurants,
[355]
merchants, and retailers,
[356]
where you can earn cashback locally,
[358]
just the same as online.
[360]
So you can scroll through here,
[361]
you can pull this up and click Nearby Offers
[364]
and it will show you different places nearby you,
[367]
where you can earn cashback and how much cashback
[369]
you can actually earn just the same.
[371]
So let's back out of here now to the homepage,
[373]
because now that we've covered the different ways,
[375]
Acorns helps you automate your investing and saving,
[378]
I now want to talk about how you actually get started
[380]
on the Acorns app, because if you're a new investor,
[382]
you're wondering Erik, how hard is this to get started?
[384]
Well, it's actually pretty easy.
[385]
Essentially, when you sign up for Acorns,
[387]
they're going to give you a brief survey, very short,
[390]
where they just want to find out your investment objectives
[392]
and your financial goals.
[394]
So this will help them then recommend
[396]
one of their five prebuilt and diversified portfolios
[399]
for you to choose from.
[400]
Now they have five different portfolios
[402]
and I'm going to show you those right now.
[404]
So if you go back into the investment account of Acorns
[406]
and we click on Portfolio,
[408]
this is where you can see they have
[410]
five different portfolio options.
[412]
The first is Conservative.
[413]
This one is heavy in bonds,
[416]
both government and corporate bonds
[417]
and it has a lower percentage of stocks.
[420]
Then you have Moderately Conservative, you have Moderate,
[424]
which is kind of a combination
[425]
of half stocks and half bonds.
[427]
You have Moderately Aggressive and then lastly,
[430]
you have Aggressive, which is heavy in stocks
[432]
and lower in bonds.
[434]
So again, when you take that brief survey,
[435]
when you first sign up for Acorns,
[437]
though I recommend one of these portfolios for you,
[439]
based on your, how you answer that survey.
[442]
Now don't worry, you can change your portfolio
[444]
any time without restriction.
[446]
But again, I recommend taking the survey
[448]
when you first sign up to find
[449]
the right portfolio option for you.
[451]
So let's not talk about the account minimum
[453]
to get started investing with Acorns.
[454]
So one of the cool things with Acorns is actually
[456]
it's great for new investors
[457]
because you can start investing with as little as $5.
[461]
You know, many traditional investment brokerages,
[463]
such as Etrade or Fidelity or places like that,
[466]
they do require hundreds or even thousands of dollars
[468]
just to get started investing.
[470]
With Acorns, like I said, you can get started
[472]
with as little as $5 and work your way up from there.
[475]
This basically allows you to start with a small amount
[477]
and again, set up either the recurring deposits
[479]
or the roundup feature or investing cashback
[481]
and it allows you to invest over time gradually
[484]
with small consistent contributions.
[486]
And this is a great way I think for new investors
[488]
to get started investing and encouraging passive investing.
[491]
So I do want to briefly cover the different accounts
[493]
offered through the Acorns app
[495]
because you do have a couple options.
[496]
Now, the first option is called Acorns Core.
[499]
And this one here is your core portfolio
[501]
on the homepage here, where it says Invest for Your Future,
[504]
that's your core investment account.
[505]
That's where you can invest
[506]
in the stock market through Acorns.
[508]
Again, using those various automation tools
[510]
to help you invest.
[511]
The next type of account is actually called Acorn Spend.
[515]
Now this is underneath your Core Investment account
[517]
where it says Spin Smarter.
[519]
If you click on that,
[520]
this is actually their mobile checking,
[523]
mobile banking account.
[524]
Now this account actually does come with a Visa Debit card.
[527]
Let me actually show you guys that right now.
[529]
Hang on one second.
[530]
All right, so this is the actual card here.
[532]
So it does come with an Acorns Visa Debit card here.
[535]
It looks pretty cool.
[536]
Now this is linked to your Acorns mobile banking account.
[540]
And this will allow you to basically,
[541]
with this mobile banking account,
[543]
it allows you to easily transfer your funds
[545]
between your investment account
[547]
and your mobile checking account
[548]
and then you could spend those funds
[550]
with your Acorns debit card.
[551]
Now, I don't recommend spending all your investments,
[553]
you know, on things you don't need,
[555]
but if you need to transfer any money over
[557]
from your investments to purchase something
[558]
that you absolutely do need the Acorns debit card
[561]
is a great way to access those funds quicker
[564]
than having to transfer it to your external bank.
[566]
And there's no minimum balance requirement
[568]
to maintain the account.
[569]
So it's a really cool way to access your funds
[572]
if you need them from your Acorns portfolio like I said.
[574]
Now, you can actually also choose to set up direct deposit
[577]
into this account if you like and there are other features
[580]
like an ATM Finder where you can actually find local ATMs
[583]
near you that are fee free.
[585]
And it also says you can deposit checks as well
[587]
that's a feature that's coming soon
[589]
to the Acorns Spend Checking account.
[591]
The third type of account offered on Acorns
[593]
is called Acorns Later.
[595]
This is basically a retirement account through Acorns.
[597]
Now this allows you to set up various kinds
[599]
of individual retirement accounts, also known as IRAs.
[602]
It allows you to set up a Roth IRA, a Traditional IRA,
[606]
or a SEP IRA, which is for self-employed persons.
[609]
Now, I personally already have a retirement account
[612]
at a different place that I've had for years
[613]
before Acorns made a retirement account available.
[615]
But if I didn't already have a retirement account,
[618]
I would definitely consider Acorns
[619]
because the earlier you can start saving
[621]
for retirement guys, no matter how young you are,
[623]
no matter how old you are, the better
[625]
the earlier you can actually retire.
[627]
It's just, it really does pay off to start saving early.
[629]
So those are the three different account types offered
[632]
on the Acorns app.
[633]
Now let's talk about how much does Acorns cost to use?
[636]
What are the pricing?
[637]
What are the fees?
[638]
Well, first of all, there are no commissions
[639]
to buy or sell any of your investments.
[641]
There's no fees, no cost to withdraw as well.
[645]
But there is a fixed monthly fee to be an Acorns member
[647]
and that does vary based on how many accounts
[649]
you have with them.
[650]
If you're just using the Core Investment Portfolio,
[653]
that is a fixed fee of $1 per month
[656]
for balances up to $1 million.
[658]
Now, the cool thing is if you're a college student,
[661]
Acorns actually waives this fee and it's free to use
[663]
for up to four years for as long as
[665]
you're a college student.
[667]
So if you're a student, definitely consider taking advantage
[669]
of that opportunity from Acorns.
[671]
The second thing is the Acorns,
[674]
if you want to get an Acorns Later account,
[675]
which is the retirement account,
[677]
plus the non-retirement investing account,
[680]
that is $2 per month.
[681]
So basically $1 per month for each account
[683]
for both the retirement account
[685]
and the standard non-retirement investment account.
[689]
The third membership is actually a combination
[691]
of getting the Acorns Core Investment account,
[694]
the Acorns Later retirement account
[697]
and the Acorns Spend mobile banking account.
[699]
If you want all three of those accounts in your Acorns app,
[701]
that is a fixed fee of $3 per month.
[704]
Another question I often get on the Acorns app
[706]
is investing on the Acorns app safe?
[709]
Well, the Acorns app is registered with both the SCC
[712]
and FINRA, and they are SIPC insured for up to $500,000,
[716]
including up to $250,000 in cash for brokerage failure.
[720]
So either way you are protected by the SIPC insurance.
[725]
So before I finish up this review,
[726]
I just want to go over a couple of pros and cons
[728]
of the Acorns app to help you decide
[729]
if this is the right app for you.
[731]
So firstly, on the pro side,
[733]
I will say that the Acorns app is great for new investors.
[736]
The reason for this is because it's easy
[737]
to get started investing.
[738]
They make it easy with as little as just $5.
[741]
They use very easy to understand terminology
[744]
inside their app.
[745]
It's a clean and simple user-friendly interface
[747]
just the same.
[748]
The second type of investor I would say the Acorns app
[751]
is ideal for is actually, like I said, college students.
[753]
Again, it's a $1 per month fee to use Acorns,
[756]
but if you're a college student it's free
[758]
for up to four years.
[759]
So if you're a college student,
[760]
the Acorns app definitely makes a lot of sense.
[762]
And the third type of investor I would recommend
[764]
the Acorns app for is actually an investor
[767]
who wants to get a lot out of a single app.
[770]
Because like I said, the Acorns app is very versatile
[772]
not only do they offer an investing account
[774]
inside their app.
[775]
But they also have the option to open up
[777]
a retirement account, a mobile banking account
[780]
where you can transfer funds with the Acorns debit card
[782]
between your investments and your checking account.
[784]
So it really does give you a lot of versatility in one app.
[787]
Plus they provide several automation tools
[790]
to help you invest easily and passively
[792]
without having to think about it.
[794]
Now let's go over some of the cons of the Acorns app
[796]
and who I would not recommend it for.
[798]
So firstly, I would say the Acorns app is not as ideal
[801]
for active stock traders.
[803]
The Acorns app really does encourage long-term investing
[807]
long-term growth of your investments.
[809]
But if you're an active stock trader and you want to day trade
[812]
or swing trade or trade stocks actively,
[815]
Acorns is not as ideal for you because like I said,
[818]
it's more geared towards long-term investing.
[820]
If you want to do short-term trading active and trade stocks,
[824]
individual stocks actively,
[825]
I would probably recommend checking out
[827]
my Webull app review or my Robinhood app review.
[830]
Those are two stock trading apps,
[831]
which are more ideal for that.
[833]
Acorns app is much more ideal
[835]
for long-term passive investing.
[837]
The second type of investor I would not recommend
[839]
the Acorns app for would probably be those
[841]
who are looking to invest in individual stocks.
[843]
The reason I say this is because Acorns
[846]
again, is kind of limited with their investment options.
[848]
They only give you those five prebuilt portfolios
[851]
and although they are diversified and well-built,
[853]
you only can choose from those five
[855]
and you can not invest in individual stocks.
[857]
If you want to invest outside of one
[859]
of their prebuilt portfolios and invest in,
[861]
make your own investment options,
[863]
choose what stocks you want to invest in
[865]
and invest in individual companies like Amazon,
[867]
Walmart, Apple, and Google,
[869]
you may want to instead consider looking
[871]
into the M1 Finance app or the Stash invest app.
[874]
Those are two other micro investing apps
[876]
that allow you to invest in individual stocks.
[879]
So if you've made it all the way through to the end
[881]
of this video, I give you a high-five.
[882]
