What is the "Dow Jones"? - YouTube
Channel: ClayTrader
[0]
what is the Dow Jones Industrial Average
[2]
I'm clay let me explain there are many
[11]
names for but it's official name is Dow
[14]
Jones Industrial Average but if you want
[17]
to kind of sound hip if you want to be
[19]
like one of the cool kids then you just
[21]
call the Dow Jones so what exactly is
[24]
the Dow Jones well the Dow Jones is
[26]
essentially the stock market and where
[28]
did all this come from well a quick
[30]
quick quick history lesson Charles Dow
[33]
and then his business partner Edward
[36]
Jones have ever heard of Edward Jones
[37]
the investment advisory but I actually
[40]
learned about that I don't where that
[41]
was a connection but Charles Dow and
[43]
then Edwards Jones they were business
[46]
partners they combined to do all this
[47]
and it all happened in 1896 no it's not
[51]
there we go
[51]
here's your history lesson this all
[53]
started in 1896 and again this is
[55]
basically if somebody's talking about
[57]
the stock market there are more than
[59]
likely talking about the Dow Jones which
[61]
again it's the Dow Jones Industrial
[63]
Average so stock market for the most
[68]
part if people are talking about that
[71]
they are talking about the Dow Jones and
[75]
then as we just discussed the Dow Jones
[78]
is its official name up there so what
[81]
actually is this well what's the purpose
[84]
of it it's a way to pretty much gauge
[86]
the health or lack thereof of an entire
[89]
economy so if the stock market if the
[92]
Dow Jones is doing well then you know
[95]
from a general at now there's definitely
[96]
nooks and crannies all of this but from
[98]
a general framework perspective that
[100]
implies oh then that the country's
[103]
economy is doing well now if the Dow
[105]
Jones if the stock market oh man the
[107]
stock market the Dow Jones all it's
[109]
doing so bad that would imply that the
[111]
economy is just doing bad as a whole now
[115]
what actually makes up the Dow Jones
[117]
well there are thirty companies that go
[124]
into making this up so again we'll call
[126]
it just the Dow and these thirty
[129]
companies are companies that you've
[131]
heard of I'm not gonna list them all but
[134]
Nikes in it and just pretty much Procter
[138]
& Gamble so that doesn't mean much but
[140]
you know have you ever used deodorant
[142]
shampoo stuff like that that's Procter &
[144]
Gamble just big ExxonMobil you know
[147]
there's a gas company
[148]
lots of big-name companies that you've
[151]
heard of they are making this up and the
[153]
reason they're using big name companies
[155]
was because the logic goes well those
[157]
big companies if they're all doing well
[159]
well then as a whole the Dow Jones is
[162]
going to do well which would then
[163]
reflect and make it at least make sense
[166]
that okay the overall economy is doing
[168]
well so you have thirty companies now
[170]
the one thing to note with this is these
[171]
thirty companies so right here these are
[178]
not always the same companies these can
[180]
change so over time these companies have
[184]
you know the different ones have come in
[186]
and gone all the time I had one of the
[188]
most companies that was you know taken
[190]
out of the Dow Jones with General
[192]
Electric General Electric has really
[194]
gone through a rough patch and as a
[196]
recording of this video was still going
[197]
through a rough patch so they were taken
[199]
out and I think Walgreens would replace
[202]
them and think about it Walgreens they
[204]
were like on the corner of every street
[205]
out there it seems like so they'll get a
[207]
big company and it you know it's it's
[210]
logical to think well if Walgreens is
[211]
doing well then the economy as a whole
[213]
is probably doing well if Walgreens is
[215]
doing very very poorly then yeah maybe
[217]
the economy isn't doing so good but that
[220]
is how those 30 companies are made up
[222]
they can change so it's not always the
[224]
30 and yep for the most part they stay
[226]
the same but over time companies drop
[229]
out and new companies are added back in
[231]
now as far as you know how does this
[234]
calculation work how does the number so
[236]
a lot of people say well what are the
[237]
Dow Jones do today what are the markets
[239]
do today all the markets were down a
[240]
hundred points most times they referring
[243]
to the Dow Jones was down a hundred
[244]
points but how is that calculation all
[247]
made well I'm not going to get into the
[249]
nooks and crannies and go through every
[251]
single calculation but just understand
[253]
this and this is probably I think the
[255]
easiest way to look at it so the higher
[260]
value a company has or in other words
[263]
you know
[265]
the bigger a company is so uh you know
[269]
Clay's little lemonade stand on the
[271]
corner versus Apple you know Apple is
[274]
much more valuable than my little
[275]
lemonade stand right they're gonna have
[277]
much more you know effect on things
[280]
because they are a much bigger company
[281]
so the higher value means the higher
[285]
influence meaning if one of the highest
[291]
value companies of the 30 has a really
[294]
really good day
[295]
then the Dow Jones as a whole is gonna
[297]
have a good day
[298]
whereas let's say that maybe the top
[300]
five really biggest ones of the day did
[303]
terrible terrible terrible but they were
[305]
still the five biggest even though the
[308]
25 other companies may have still done
[311]
well it's still possible for the Dow
[313]
Jones have actually shown you know a day
[315]
that you know lost some you you know
[317]
that the the market as a whole was down
[319]
so that's how it reflects is just the
[322]
higher value the bigger the companies
[323]
the higher influence it has on the
[325]
number that the Dow Jones is giving you
[327]
and again this number is just you know
[329]
based on all these company's values to
[331]
put together but at the core like I said
[333]
as far as the just the top down general
[335]
framework just understand that the
[337]
higher value companies have higher
[339]
influence on that Dow Jones number so
[341]
that is what this is the Dow Jones is
[343]
just the stock market and the stock
[344]
market is just a way to give a broad
[347]
sense of the health of an economy or
[350]
economy is struggling you would expect
[352]
the stock market to also be struggling
[353]
that's not a perfect correlation but
[355]
that's like I said the general premise
[356]
of how this all works and thirty
[359]
companies in the Dow they can always be
[361]
changing and a higher value companies
[364]
the bigger companies are gonna affect
[365]
the Dow Jones the most each and every
[367]
day so that is how it works and that is
[369]
what the Dow Jones is and what people
[371]
are referring to when they talk about
[373]
the stock market and whether or not oh
[375]
wow you know the stock market had a
[377]
rough day today this is what they're all
[378]
referring to right there first off
[381]
thanks so much for watching the entire
[382]
video real quick before you go I want to
[385]
invite you to a live webinar web class
[387]
training workshop online event whatever
[389]
you want to call it but it will be me
[391]
live revealing to you what I discovered
[394]
that has allowed me to transform myself
[396]
from being an employee to be
[398]
my own boss including how I had only one
[401]
losing day out of 73 days in total I'm
[404]
going to cover three keys that have
[406]
helped me unlock profitable consistency
[408]
within the markets the first key is
[410]
super-weird but in a productive type of
[412]
way the second key is super awesome
[414]
because it quite literally is wired into
[417]
our DNA as humans making it very easy to
[419]
use but in a cruel way this becomes a
[422]
pitfall for many traders I'll explain it
[424]
all though including how to avoid the
[426]
pitfall that it creates for some and
[428]
yeah the third key when you hear it
[430]
sounds way to get way too good to be
[432]
true
[432]
but it's not and I'll show you how it
[434]
all works then at the end I open it up
[436]
for a question-and-answer session that
[438]
is again totally live even if you can't
[441]
make the live session please still sign
[443]
up as it will be recorded and you can go
[445]
back and watch the replay then I will
[447]
send you click the image on the screen
[449]
or click the link down in the
[450]
description box so you can get the date
[452]
and time and claim your spot which I
[455]
should note is limited due to the fact
[457]
that this truly is a live event if you
[459]
have any questions let me know if not
[461]
I'll be seeing you soon
