Checking out an old Radio Shack multimeter - with a special ability - YouTube
Channel: pileofstuff
[0]
first order of business as usual is聽
checking out a different beer this聽聽
[6]
is Bavarian dark lager from district聽
brewing company in Regina Saskatchewan聽聽
[11]
the tasting notes uh describe it as malt forward聽
with notes of toffee raisin and chocolate
[20]
yeah a fair bit of that toffee聽
note in there that's kind of neat聽聽
[24]
it's been a while since I've had a聽
lager. So tonight I'm looking at this聽聽
[27]
piece of vintage radio shack equipment now in the聽
states radio shack ceased to exist a few years ago聽聽
[35]
but in Canada that was what almost 20 years聽
ago 2004 i think it was that radio shack聽聽
[42]
stopped existing at least by that聽
name they became a couple other things聽聽
[46]
since then but uh yeah the radio shack name hasn't聽
existed in Canada for decades so what's in the box
[56]
it is this multimeter oh sorry there we go english聽
side manual auto range dual display multi-reader聽聽
[64]
a multimeter but the interesting thing about this聽
one is it has a computer interface so this unit is聽聽
[70]
from 1994. and as i said what makes it interesting聽
and fairly unique in low cost multimeters is that聽聽
[80]
it has a computer interface now of course ms-dos聽
software isn't going to be all that useful to me聽聽
[86]
i think this is written for probably well windows聽
95 I'm guessing um is the windows software so聽聽
[94]
yeah that's not really going to work very well聽
on my linux computer but i think i might have聽聽
[99]
found some solutions for that on the good old聽
internet anyway i found this thing um earlier聽聽
[106]
this week when i was digging through a storage聽
cabinet at work looking for something else and聽聽
[112]
i remembered that we actually had two of these聽
and the reason we bought them is because of that聽聽
[116]
serial port which allows data logging so what's聽
in here we have a radio shack branded battery聽聽
[124]
so that's no doubt you know ish聽
years old so i doubt it's any good聽聽
[131]
but that doesn't matter because we had this聽
thing powered from a 9-volt battery eliminator
[140]
which is just that a 9 volt battery snap that's聽
kind of neat there's a little condom for the聽聽
[147]
battery so that if it leaks it doesn't uh cause聽
all kinds of problems that's kind of nice looks聽聽
[153]
like we had to customize that to make it work not聽
a big deal that's interesting us and german patent
[163]
manufacturing korea and then all the different聽
radio shack variants the model number 22-168a聽聽
[173]
if you look that up online you can find the聽
manual and a bunch of projects and stuff for it聽聽
[178]
one of which i'm going to try later so聽
cables that are with this as a set of leads聽聽
[184]
fairly standard leads they're not silicone聽
wire or anything but they're nice and lengthy
[194]
and then there is the serial聽
cable all mixed in here
[201]
so standard db9 on that end and聽聽
[205]
these funky little bent pins on this end聽
which if i remember correctly yeah plugs into
[215]
there and that allows you to pull data out of the聽
meter live and just save it onto your computer for聽聽
[225]
later analysis and that's the reason that we聽
bought these things at work in the first place聽聽
[230]
if i remember correctly they were about 100聽
bucks or something each so expensive by radio聽聽
[234]
shack standards but as a multimeter with聽
data logging functions that's pretty cheap聽聽
[240]
especially back then yep it works and聽
there's no reason why it shouldn't聽聽
[245]
it didn't have batteries dying in聽
it it was just sitting there working
[251]
first thing let's test its old聽
battery I'm gonna guess it's聽聽
[257]
yeah seven volts that's better聽
than i expected actually聽聽
[263]
so i think what I'll do is just聽
quickly compare this thing for accuracy聽聽
[271]
against the most accurate meter that聽
i've got available to me which is this聽聽
[277]
fluke 298 I'll just do a few quick tests that聽
won't be too extensive so here is dc volts mode聽聽
[286]
I've got five volts on my little power supply聽
over there they're both tied in parallel here聽聽
[294]
i'd call that pretty much the same
[301]
so there's 19 volts coming out of here 1903 18.986聽
definitely close enough for most non-lab grade聽聽
[311]
jobs that's just fine actually this is an聽
auto ranging they're not auto ranging so聽聽
[317]
there you go yeah that's 200 volt聽
range this one is auto ranging so聽聽
[322]
yeah that's reasonable enough no聽
complaints there okay let's try聽聽
[326]
impedance i've got our resistance i guess聽
i've got this stack of resistors in parallel聽聽
[331]
here which if i remember correctly is聽
close to 75 ohms yes 72.85 on the fluke
[342]
72.9 on the radio shack that's pretty聽
reasonable uh what are the leads measuring at聽聽
[352]
less than half an ohm there on the fluke聽
i'm going to guess it's about the same聽聽
[357]
if not a bit lower yeah 0.15.16 so not enough聽
to throw a measurement like that off let's try聽聽
[364]
a high resistance how about 25k yeah i know聽
it doesn't have to be a power resistor but聽聽
[371]
i just happen to have that one right聽
handy dandy so there is that one 24.31
[382]
that's pretty bang on for what it聽
says okay cool do we have anything聽聽
[389]
else how about something right聽
in the middle there's 2.5 k
[397]
2.46
[401]
2.46 bang on that is so聽
much better than my original聽聽
[409]
radioshock multimeter that i bought as a teenager聽
this thing is the least accurate multimeter聽聽
[415]
that i have even worse than these guys which聽
are actually pretty damn close to this fluke聽聽
[424]
one more thing i can fairly聽
easily try um ac line voltage
[432]
123 and a third
[438]
123.5.6 that's no problem with that at all聽
so that's cool to know that it's uh nice and聽聽
[448]
accurate i'm curious to see what's inside this guy聽
uh looks like it shouldn't be too hard to open up聽聽
[457]
just four screws I'll quickly do that聽
and bring you back just before i open it聽聽
[464]
because screwdrivering isn't all聽
that exciting to watch i don't think
[475]
there we go so little piezo聽
buzzers in the back there聽聽
[482]
oh a bunch of shielding that's like聽
anti-static bag kind of plastic for shielding聽聽
[490]
that's nice screw it down聽
through there ceramic fuse
[498]
there we go deeper in looks like there's a nice聽聽
[502]
big chip right there doing most聽
of the heavy lifting I'm guessing
[509]
so yeah i guess uh yeah let聽
me pull off all those screws聽聽
[514]
and come back in a second聽
here and the last screw okay
[526]
and how can i lift that out of there
[533]
trying not to destroy anything
[539]
because i do want this thing to go back together聽
there we go okay what's that okay that's the聽聽
[551]
insulating sleeves for the probes there's聽
some tweezers here can't get my big mitts聽聽
[559]
in there right so there is another little聽
bit of insulation there's the capacitance聽聽
[568]
connectors there's some connectors that go down聽
to the main board several of them so one connector聽聽
[576]
down there one there a double row there there's聽
the capacitor check there is the what is that聽聽
[587]
the transistor check power button is an actual聽
button and the other three buttons the mode and聽聽
[595]
ac dc and set reset oh it's actually labeled there聽
function set reset and ecdc those are just little聽聽
[602]
resistive button things and then two calibration聽
nice so this big maxim chip a max 130 cpl聽聽
[616]
and this they're upside down but whatever聽
uh what is this met x metex uh ks 57c
[628]
2016-13 which is probably the metering chip聽
there's a crystal there for it this is way聽聽
[639]
different than a mo than the modern meters聽
with their single blob chip on board thing聽聽
[643]
isn't that so yeah obviously i'm not going聽
to touch this calibration part or this聽聽
[650]
little variable capacitor down here oh variable聽
resistor sorry vr2 i'm not going to go too deep聽聽
[656]
into it i'm obviously not going to reverse聽
engineer it that would just be insanity but聽聽
[661]
oh and then there is a zebra stripe or there and聽
up there actually uh it goes down to the zebra聽聽
[669]
stripe connectors for the for the lcd oh hey on聽
the back of the lcd you see that mitex or medex聽聽
[680]
same brand as this chip here with a date code聽
of 1998 fifth month uh may 31st of 1998 so there聽聽
[692]
that dates it pretty definitively okay there it's聽
back together let's just make sure it still works聽聽
[701]
power on volts dc should be about 19 or so聽
there you go 19 exactly good so it still works
[713]
always the first thing to check once you've聽
taken it apart and put it back together right聽聽
[716]
sure now then about this serial port clearly聽
i'm not going to be able to show you the the聽聽
[723]
original dos and windows software that came聽
with it partly because i don't have a dossier聽聽
[726]
windows machine here partly because they don't聽
have a machine that will read this disc anymore
[734]
let's see if i can find some kind of a usb to聽
three and a half inch floppy drive at some point聽聽
[740]
i'm if i had wine running i might be able聽
to run that software but i don't so plan b聽聽
[746]
i have a usb to serial adapter which聽
should theoretically allow this聽聽
[755]
to be read by the computer because in the manual聽
it gives some technical information this is from聽聽
[763]
the golden age of radio shack when they actually聽
gave you technical information on the things that聽聽
[768]
you bought so this thing talks at 1200 baud聽
uh it's seven bit no parity two stop bits聽聽
[777]
and there is the frame of data that comes out of聽
it so that's fairly easy and it even tells you聽聽
[785]
how to write a super basic basic program to uh聽
to deal with this which is really cool however聽聽
[794]
i haven't bothered to install basic on my computer聽
but all you have to do is give it a d and it will聽聽
[804]
give you a single reading so you can just聽
write something to send it to d every x number聽聽
[810]
of seconds and it will dump some stuff out to聽
you so let's uh just try and do that manually聽聽
[817]
okay so i am set up here on uh my usb serial聽
depth here 1272 and if i send it a capital d
[832]
bugger all happens that's what it said right聽
1200 seven bit no parity two stops right okay
[846]
send to d send a capital d nothing聽
okay maybe that's not the thing for it聽聽
[853]
fine now something else i found in my聽
searching was this at linuxtoys.org聽聽
[860]
i'll put a link down below um so somebody聽
went through and figured this thing out聽聽
[867]
back in the day when it was a current item聽
and they wrote this little c program for it聽聽
[875]
which is pretty cool so i have聽
actually gone and compiled this up聽聽
[880]
i did have to add this standard library to it to聽
make it compile but it seems to have compiled so聽聽
[890]
if i run it i'll see if i聽
can talk to make that work
[897]
oh hey a result so this happens every 60 minutes聽
so i'm just going to uh well i'll speed the聽聽
[906]
video up and i'm going to change the voltage聽
that it's reading on my power supply each uh聽聽
[912]
a bit each time let's pull it down half a volt or聽
volt or something and i'll come back in a little聽聽
[918]
bit here so while that's happening let's just go聽
and find out this uh matex or met x or however聽聽
[924]
you pronounce it seems like they've been in uh in聽
a bunch of different industries for over 50 years聽聽
[934]
among the things that they make currently are聽
these digital meters all industrial stuff all聽聽
[941]
fairly heavy duty so i guess that somewhat聽
explains how something so uh interesting and聽聽
[950]
heavy duty and accurate ended up in radio shack's聽
uh catalog it was made for them by somebody who聽聽
[958]
actually knows what they're doing which is pretty聽
pretty standard actually reader shack had a lot of聽聽
[963]
deals like that with sony and sure microphones and聽
crown microphones and cos headphones i guess that聽聽
[972]
shouldn't surprise me really back to this there's聽
a handful of readings that this thing's taken over聽聽
[978]
a minute or so i'm just going to uh i'm just聽
going to put it onto this resistor here which聽聽
[987]
is around 75 ohms spin that around ohms and we'll聽
see what the next reading says when it comes out
[999]
oh there we go 77.6 ohms that's uh聽
so you can track pretty much anything聽聽
[1009]
of course you could you could rewrite that program聽
there it is here you could rewrite that program聽聽
[1016]
to dump the data to a file or something you can聽
change the time on it or whatever you need to do聽聽
[1025]
it is c so anybody who's been messing with聽
arduinos for a while should be able to聽聽
[1032]
translate this at least a little bit and figure聽
out what it's what it's doing you could tinker聽聽
[1037]
and just recompile it and the beauty of having聽
a linux system is the com the gcc compiler聽聽
[1044]
is pre-installed it's just one command聽
to recompile this so that's pretty slick聽聽
[1050]
that satisfied my curiosity um and聽
i can actually still use this guy聽聽
[1057]
with in the modern day even though it's got a聽
fairly old-school connection on it with just a聽聽
[1064]
simple little ebay usb to serial adapter and聽
a chunk of random code that i found online聽聽
[1072]
it still works just as well as it ever did i聽
hope that was a bit of a nostalgia trip for聽聽
[1077]
some of you and a bit of a curiosity for聽
people who hadn't encountered this guy before聽聽
[1082]
i had fun uh digging through it and just聽
reminding myself of what this guy could do聽聽
[1090]
thanks for watching i do appreciate that as always聽
comments and questions down below there'll be some聽聽
[1095]
links down in the description i'm pretty sure i've聽
mentioned that already i will talk to you later
