[26]

[28]
new video on Thursdays the five skills
[30]
I'm going to tell you today are the
[33]
keywords that employers look for on your
[36]
resume and I have gotten hundreds of HR
[38]
and people professionals jobs by helping
[41]
them to upskill and revamp their resumes
[43]
with these skills and make sure you say
[45]
- number five because that is the top
[47]
skill I've seen if you take a few
[50]
classes to build it makes all the
[53]
difference in getting the job or a
[55]
promotion
[55]
so let's first discuss how do you build
[58]
skills for an HR career one way is to
[61]
get involved with anything around
[63]
employee engagement community building
[66]
training hiring firing performance
[69]
management anything people related even
[72]
if your role isn't straight-up human
[74]
resources role get exposed to those
[76]
different processes in any way possible
[78]
second is to skill up using courses and
[81]
books certifications are a great way to
[84]
learn new skills and have something to
[86]
legitimize your expertise to employers
[89]
but you need to get the right
[92]
certification have you ever noticed
[94]
that's so many HR professionals on
[96]
LinkedIn say Sherm CP or Sherm SCP in
[100]
their profile
[101]
well that's because employers look for
[103]
Sherm certifications and trust those the
[107]
most I've known the folks at Sherman for
[109]
years and they were gracious enough to
[111]
sponsor this video but sponsorship or
[113]
not they are one of the most highly
[115]
respected HR companies in this industry
[118]
and that's affect sure has their main
[120]
certifications and they also offer
[122]
specialty credentials available for many
[125]
of these in demand skills these
[127]
credentials are a great way to show your
[129]
area of expertise along with your
[132]
dedication to the profession
[133]
and can be a stepping stone to the
[136]
larger certification I'll link a whole
[138]
page of all the specialty credentials in
[140]
the description so you can peruse them
[142]
yourself here are the top skills to
[145]
learn skill number one town acquisition
[148]
I know what you may be thinking I'm not
[150]
a recruiter I'm more of a generalist but
[153]
recruiting and talent acquisition skills
[155]
are still super useful and here's why
[159]
one reason is to keep costs low
[161]
companies sometimes like to hire someone
[163]
who is a recruiter slash Human Resources
[165]
professional hybrid essentially someone
[167]
who can full stack hire people and
[169]
engage with them all the way through
[171]
their entire employee lifecycle having
[173]
recruiting skills along with the other
[175]
skills I will discuss in this video will
[178]
enable you to beat out all those other
[181]
talented folks for these jobs and second
[184]
your career might hit a bit of a ceiling
[186]
if you don't get ta experience if you've
[189]
only ever touched the other HR
[191]
disciplines and they are looking to
[192]
promote someone to oversee all functions
[195]
of HR ya better know your stuff
[197]
when it comes to recruiting talent
[198]
acquisition skills include sourcing
[201]
building a recruiting process how
[202]
evaluation scorecards applicant tracking
[205]
systems offer generation and negotiation
[208]
if these areas sound unfamiliar then
[210]
study up my friend to build this skill
[212]
recruit for any organization you're a
[215]
part of even if you're recruiting
[217]
volunteers for a charity event find any
[219]
way to touch some of these skills but
[223]
there are more specific hard skills like
[226]
sourcing and offer generation that are
[228]
highly attractive to employers so either
[231]
build that skill or show employers that
[233]
you have a strong grasp by enrolling in
[236]
Sherm's talent acquisition specialty
[238]
credential which I will link in the
[241]
description skill number two total
[243]
rewards the fact of the matter is if
[245]
you're an HR you will be expected to
[248]
have an understanding of benefits and
[250]
compensation and the other incentives
[253]
provided to employees there is so much
[256]
to learn here and often it is easiest to
[259]
learn this on the job but one way to go
[261]
about it is to study what your company
[264]
does what do they use to provide
[266]
benefits what HR is or HR information
[268]
system do they use what else do they
[271]
offer like tuition reimbursement or
[273]
other benefits start asking questions
[276]
know what a PEO is before walking into
[279]
your next job interview Sherm is of
[282]
course a total hub for this information
[285]
there are tons of resources there
[288]
including their foundations of
[289]
compensation program which will break it
[291]
down for you I'll make sure to link more
[294]
information on that program in the
[296]
comments and in the description skill
[298]
number three immigration and employment
[301]
law if they hire anyone who needs visa
[303]
or sponsorship or hire in multiple
[305]
states or heck just hiring in one state
[308]
is so darn confusing they will want you
[310]
to spearhead the h-1b process and
[312]
protect the company for making any
[314]
terrible missteps when it comes to
[316]
employment law now you don't need a law
[317]
degree and the good news is that you
[319]
will work with lawyers who specialize in
[322]
this so it's a little less intense than
[324]
it sounds but being informed knowing the
[327]
right next step for any legal situation
[329]
that comes up is highly valued in any HR
[333]
professional I would seriously advise on
[335]
a full on specialty credential for this
[338]
one sure has one focused on US
[340]
employment immigration and then another
[343]
one for California HR law so dive into
[346]
those if they make sense for your
[347]
situation now then next two skills are
[350]
so darn crucial and I personally beats
[353]
one out for an HR job because the
[355]
employer said that I had skilled number
[357]
five and they didn't one thing you might
[359]
be noticing is that all of these are
[361]
hard skills when HR requires a lot of
[364]
soft skills such as strong leadership
[366]
and communication skills hard skills
[368]
will give you a strong foundation and a
[371]
killer resume and soft skills will take
[373]
your career to new heights so make sure
[375]
to check out Sherm's leadership
[377]
workshops where they are crafted
[379]
specifically for HR professionals to
[382]
advance their careers with a
[384]
well-rounded approach I'll link more
[386]
information about that program in the
[388]
comments and in the description skill
[390]
number for employee relations employee
[393]
relations is everything from being the
[396]
intermediary between the employees and
[397]
managers to creating
[399]
policies around employee issues like
[402]
fair compensation useful benefits proper
[405]
work-life balance reasonable working
[406]
hours and others it's all about being
[408]
the Peacekeeper and coaching others
[411]
through complex situations the first
[413]
step here is to start reading company
[416]
policies and get familiar and consider
[418]
why certain choices were made when
[421]
writing these different policies though
[423]
I'm warning you do not read these late
[425]
at night because you may start to get
[426]
drowsy but these policies have an
[429]
incredible amount of work that go into
[431]
them and then if you are not able to get
[433]
direct HR mediation experience look for
[437]
other areas in your work or life where
[439]
you can act as a mediator and a coach
[442]
and look to flex those skills more there
[445]
is an engaging course called workplace
[447]
coaching and mentoring where you'll
[449]
learn coaching techniques designed to
[451]
effectively increase leader in
[453]
organizational performance if you can
[455]
talk eloquently on that topic they are
[457]
going to go dang this person is
[460]
strategic I will link more information
[463]
about that course again it's on Sherman
[465]
in the comments and in the description
[467]
skill number five people analytics
[470]
executives want to see numbers people
[472]
analytics is so crucial it's how you
[476]
collect data on your workforce and then
[478]
use that to inform major decisions and
[481]
programs such as can you tell me how
[483]
much for your employee turnover last
[485]
year was regrettable loss how far
[487]
diverse can etes get in your recruitment
[489]
pipeline if your internal promotions has
[491]
increased since implementing that
[493]
leadership training two years ago using
[495]
hrs and performance management systems
[497]
to unearth this data will be crucial
[499]
without data
[500]
you're just another chump with a hunch I
[503]
personally learned people analytics from
[505]
my organizational psychology master's
[507]
program and that was very statistics
[510]
heavy but you don't have to enroll in a
[512]
master's program to learn this stuff and
[514]
surprise surprise
[514]
jerem does have a people analytics
[516]
specialty credential that I highly
[519]
recommend you get and that can really
[521]
help you take your career to the next
[523]
level I will provide all of these cherm
[526]
links in the comments and in the
[527]
description so that you can make sure to
[530]
utilize all of their excellent resource
[533]
I'll also link a free download of how to
[535]
update your LinkedIn profile which is a
[539]
full checklist of exactly what to do
[542]
because once you build these great
[543]
skills and certifications you better get
[546]
that on your LinkedIn profile make sure
[548]
you like this video and subscribe to
[550]
