[5]
in 2009 south korea did something
[8]
remarkable
[9]
the country poured 2 percent of its gdp
[12]
some 38.1 billion us dollars into
[16]
environmental projects
[18]
hoping to create 1 million green jobs
[20]
over the next
[21]
5 years the goal was to spur growth
[24]
in a slumping economy while
[26]
simultaneously creating a low carbon
[29]
society
[30]
in one sense the plan worked south
[32]
korea's economic system
[34]
did eventually recover but in a more
[37]
important sense
[38]
the plan failed from 2009 to 2014
[42]
korea's emissions rose 11.8 percent
[46]
so despite massive investments in clean
[49]
energy
[49]
railway expansion and energy efficiency
[52]
south korea's emissions still climbed
[55]
what happened why didn't south korea's
[58]
green growth strategy
[59]
work today we'll answer that question
[62]
and more
[63]
in order to understand one of the
[64]
insidious specters
[66]
that haunts the green energy revolution
[70]
consumption
[73]
it's december and the streets of new
[75]
york city are filled with christmas
[78]
stores trees lights bags
[82]
packages and trash christmas
[85]
in america is a sacred capitalist
[87]
holiday wherein the average american
[89]
explodes their average yearly emissions
[91]
footprint
[92]
by roughly 650 kilograms of co2
[95]
equivalent
[96]
while spending a cumulative 2.6 billion
[100]
dollars on wrapping paper
[103]
up until around 150 years ago however
[106]
the holiday rarely saw a wrapped present
[109]
in sight
[111]
but then unofficial holidays like black
[114]
friday
[114]
and department stores like macy's
[117]
started to encourage
[118]
shoppers to fill their carts with tech
[120]
and trinkets
[121]
as a means of expressing care and love
[124]
now christmas shopping epitomizes the
[127]
consumer
[128]
experience in the united states it's
[130]
driven by a complex mix
[132]
of personal desire social pressures
[135]
status signaling
[136]
stress and propaganda that work in many
[138]
instances
[139]
not to increase personal well-being but
[142]
to pad the pocketbooks
[143]
of corporations advertisements on
[146]
instagram and billboards in times square
[148]
bombard us with visions of what we could
[150]
be if
[151]
only we had that watch or phone which
[154]
locks us
[155]
into a world where in order to find
[157]
happiness
[158]
or comfort or political change we need
[161]
to buy
[162]
stuff but a range of studies
[164]
consistently found
[165]
that once a person's needs are met extra
[168]
consumption does not increase
[170]
their well-being and buying new phones
[172]
clothes and gadgets
[173]
all have an environmental price tag
[176]
despite the fact that 100 companies were
[178]
found to be the root cause of 70
[181]
of global emissions the reality is that
[183]
the people using those companies
[185]
products and burning their fuel are us
[188]
or rather i should say primarily rich
[191]
communities and
[192]
countries because consumption levels are
[194]
not equal
[195]
across the world the average american
[198]
uses over 100 times the energy
[201]
as someone from india and if everyone in
[203]
the world were to live
[205]
in the same way the average german does
[207]
right now global emissions
[209]
would double so as those in rich
[211]
countries gorge on luxury items
[213]
and the newest tech they use energy and
[216]
emit at much higher rates than countries
[218]
in the majority
[219]
world which often are the ones feeling
[222]
the brunt
[223]
of climate disasters
[228]
the blame for overconsumption should not
[231]
and cannot be placed
[232]
solely on individuals companies and
[234]
corporations have a vested
[236]
interest in making you buy more stuff
[238]
because if they don't
[240]
they go bankrupt which is why they slap
[242]
green labels onto their products and
[244]
advertised
[245]
everywhere indeed the whole idea of a
[248]
personal carbon footprint
[249]
is a propaganda campaign created by the
[252]
fossil fuel giant bp
[254]
the move allowed them to lock in decades
[256]
of fossil fuel use by turning the
[258]
attention
[259]
away from their complicity in climate
[261]
change
[262]
and instead blaming the individual for
[264]
not living a low-carbon lifestyle
[266]
or not buying the right thing
[271]
the natural conclusion in a system
[273]
riddled with ads and cultural norms
[275]
imploring all of your senses to buy more
[278]
is that your dollar is your vote an idea
[281]
which stands in stark contrast to the
[283]
democratic ideal of
[284]
one person one vote we are led to
[287]
believe that growing the economy
[289]
which for the individual means buying
[291]
more whether it be supporting new green
[293]
tech
[294]
or wearing sustainably made clothing is
[296]
how we stop
[297]
climate change but the reality is that
[299]
this capitalist growth model
[302]
counteracts the work being done to
[304]
decrease emissions
[305]
over the last 40 years global emissions
[308]
have skyrocketed despite
[310]
dramatic expansions of renewable and
[312]
energy
[313]
efficiency technologies yes growth does
[316]
lead to an expansion of new sustainable
[319]
innovations but it also
[321]
leads to the expansion of fossil fuel
[323]
intensive industries
[325]
just one percent growth in gdp leads to
[328]
0.5
[329]
to 0.8 percent increase in carbon
[331]
emissions
[332]
and if we continue to grow at 3 percent
[334]
per year by 2043 the global economy will
[338]
be
[338]
two times larger than it is now which
[341]
means
[341]
energy consumption will be larger and
[343]
the task of transitioning towards a zero
[345]
carbon world
[346]
will be much harder so something's got
[349]
to give
[350]
and that something is consumption in
[352]
rich countries
[355]
[Music]
[356]
the unfortunate reality is that
[358]
expanding zero carbon technologies to
[360]
meet global energy demands
[362]
or what's known as decoupling emissions
[364]
from growth
[365]
will be an extremely difficult task
[368]
a task that south korea attempted back
[371]
in 2009
[372]
and ran head first into the consequences
[375]
of a growth-centered economy
[377]
the reason why south korea's emissions
[380]
still rose
[381]
11.8 percent over five years is that
[383]
their total
[384]
energy consumption outpaced renewable
[387]
installation
[388]
and energy efficiency projects so the
[390]
emissions they saved with green
[392]
technology
[393]
were nullified by their overall increase
[396]
in consumption levels so then what
[399]
options
[400]
do we have one recent study modeled that
[403]
by 2050
[405]
the world could support the equivalent
[407]
of three times the current global
[409]
population if global consumption levels
[411]
dropped
[411]
60 percent back down to 1960 levels
[415]
most notably though the paper claims
[417]
that this is possible
[418]
while still maintaining or even
[421]
improving a decent
[422]
lifestyle for all and within their
[424]
definition of a decent living
[426]
the researchers include laptops
[428]
comfortable climate control
[430]
access to robust transportation networks
[432]
and
[433]
universal healthcare and in order to
[435]
achieve this world wherein
[436]
everybody is able to enjoy a decent
[439]
lifestyle while also
[440]
avoiding a climate emergency the
[442]
researchers suggest
[444]
a dual-pronged approach on the demand
[446]
side consumption levels must drop by as
[448]
much as 95
[450]
in countries with today's highest per
[452]
capita consumers
[454]
that means no more second houses or
[456]
eating red meat
[458]
every single day of the week this then
[460]
must be simultaneously coupled with
[461]
massive roll outs of advanced technology
[464]
in energy efficiency renewable energy
[466]
and other sectors
[468]
together the model predicts that these
[470]
scenarios could allow the global
[471]
population
[472]
to live well in a zero carbon world
[476]
and if all that sounds scary hope jaren
[478]
author of the story of
[480]
more compares this future lifestyle to
[482]
that of someone living in switzerland
[485]
in the 1960s which to me doesn't sound
[488]
that bad
[488]
especially considering that everyone in
[490]
the world would be able to live
[492]
the 1960s swiss life
[498]
the key point here is that reducing
[500]
emissions or what's known as decoupling
[502]
emissions from growth
[503]
is not enough to quickly prevent the
[506]
worst case climate change scenario
[508]
reducing consumption has to be
[510]
integrated into
[511]
our solutions toolkit if we are to
[514]
quickly tackle the climate crisis before
[516]
2050 but the burden of this task should
[519]
not
[520]
be laid upon the individual it's the job
[522]
of governments and the very corporations
[524]
who created the mess
[526]
in the first place to facilitate this
[528]
drop in consumption
[530]
imagine for a moment if instead of
[532]
lobbying for fossil fuel subsidies
[534]
and spending millions telling us to
[536]
decrease our carbon footprint bp
[538]
was required to address its complicity
[541]
in climate change by leaving fossil
[543]
fuels in the ground
[544]
and developing renewable energy rapid
[546]
public transportation
[548]
and energy efficiency technologies i'd
[550]
imagine the task of reducing our
[552]
own consumption and emissions would
[555]
probably be a lot
[556]
easier ultimately d growth is a path
[559]
we need to take seriously if we are to
[561]
tackle the climate emergency
[564]
while i can't pretend to predict the
[566]
far-reaching consequences
[568]
reducing growth would create i do know
[571]
one thing the smaller our global needs
[574]
the easier the transition will be
