What Does HODL Mean? Where Does the Expression Come from? - YouTube

[6]
- All right. Let's start
with a very famous expression
[9]
that every Bitcoiner knows about.
[12]
It's the word hodl.
[14]
So, then what does hodl mean?
[16]
- Hodl means owning Bitcoin
[20]
with no intention of
selling it anytime she want.
[24]
Obviously it comes from the word hold
[29]
but like many other things
in the Bitcoin world
[32]
it comes with a nice twist.
[34]
- Yeah. That's quite obvious.
[36]
I also, immediately, when I first
[38]
heard it's thought that would mean
[41]
becoming from the word
[43]
hold, but yeah.
[45]
Small twist over there.
[46]
- Yeah, yeah. That's what
I've thought as well.
[48]
When I first got into bitcoin
[50]
I was like hearing this hodl everywhere.
[53]
Now I kind of like had an idea.
[55]
Okay, It means hold, like
don't sell, don't panic sell.
[61]
And then I did some research
about the origin of the
[66]
of this meme and there was
all kinds of information.
[71]
And one of the first pieces of information
[74]
I got into was that it means,
[80]
it's an abbreviation of
'hold on for dear life.'
[84]
- Oh, is it?
[85]
- This is not true.
[86]
This is some kind of a
legend that somebody just
[91]
just came up with it,
[92]
but it is not true.
[95]
It actually, the term originates
[96]
from a very old forum post
[101]
from 2013,
[103]
it was up there.
[104]
It's still active.
[105]
This, this forum called bitcointalk.org.
[110]
And there was one, one user who was
[114]
who was getting very emotional and he was,
[120]
he was accidentally, he misspelled the,
[124]
the word hold as hodl
[127]
- Yeah, for sure.
[128]
The story of great,
there seems to be a field
[130]
with a lot of these fun, urban legends
[133]
many of which might not be true
[135]
but I've actually seen
that a bitcointalk-forum.
[138]
And I remember that that
user was commiserating
[141]
with kind of a horrible bitcoin trader.
[143]
He was because he was losing money.
[145]
- Oh, yeah.
[146]
- Yeah, I remember he was also mentioning
[150]
that he had consumed a little bit
[153]
of whiskey and that's what was it.
[155]
He was also wondering
about the spelling of that.
[157]
Wasn't it?
[158]
- Yeah. Maybe that's that's what explains
[161]
the caps lock as well.
[162]
Cause he was like declaring
the little caps lock.
[165]
I am hodl-ing.
[166]
- Yeah.
[167]
- So I guess if you drink some whiskey
[169]
you might get emotional,
[170]
especially if you're losing money
[172]
on a trade at the same time.
[174]
So I wouldn't have what I imagined myself
[175]
in this kind of situation.
[177]
- Yeah. Not too fun.
[178]
Not too fun.
[179]
- But thanks for the meme, whoever the,
[181]
it still access the thread.
[183]
So if you want to go, go.
[185]
Go take a look at it.
[187]
We should give credits
[189]
to the original creator of this term hodl.
[193]
- So Danville, should I hodl?
[195]
Should I just be a hodl-er?
[197]
- Well, I am not giving
you financial advice flood
[201]
because I am not financial advisor
[205]
but hodl-ing seems to
be quite good strategy.
[209]
Especially if you're new to bitcoin,
[212]
you don't have that much time to follow
[213]
the market all the time.
[215]
You just want to have
like a small investment
[217]
and you wanna,
[218]
you wanna kind of like
set it up-forget it,
[221]
just watch it grow.
[224]
But if you look at the
history of the bitcoin price
[228]
most of the time you'd been better off,
[230]
just by hodl not buying and
selling or anything like that.
[235]
And if you're hodl-ing,
then you forget it.
[240]
You stress less and you have
more times do other things
[244]
in your life and just like,
[246]
think about your bitcoin
investments all the time.
