oops it turns out you can buy these off
[2]
of ebay
[10]
what you are looking at right now is an
[12]
actual motor of a tesla model s that's
[15]
right a lot of people that have gas cars
[17]
are a bit intrigued with electric cars
[19]
and like how they work and i've had four
[21]
to five tesla's guess how many oil
[22]
changes i've had zero guess how much how
[25]
many times i switch out the transmission
[27]
zero
[28]
the gas cars have all kinds of
[30]
maintenance and things you have to do
[31]
with an electric car you don't have to
[33]
do that because it's basically a
[34]
computer the battery pack and then this
[37]
motor right here
[39]
this is it this is what gives you that
[40]
ludicrous speed of people freaking out
[42]
and being terrified of riding an
[44]
electric car i feel so dangerous right
[46]
now
[56]
we've cut open a tesla battery before we
[58]
bought this guy
[61]
we cut open the tesla tires and uh
[63]
lincoln had a crazy idea let's cut open
[65]
or take apart a tesla motor it looks
[68]
really big and bulky with a lot of
[69]
screws and that that's kind of scary
[71]
this thing weighs 550 pounds when i
[74]
bought it off of ebay they're like do
[76]
you have a freight pickup place and i'm
[78]
like oh no so we called our friend
[80]
cougar at lux auto spa and he said yeah
[83]
go ahead and ship it to my place and you
[84]
can take it apart there so it's supposed
[86]
to be functional and work right now and
[87]
then there's some kind of plug right
[89]
here so maybe there's some sort of
[91]
liquids inside of there i really don't
[92]
know look at all these screws that have
[94]
nice green lines on them it's like
[95]
they're asking us they're begging us to
[97]
take it apart let us know in the
[98]
comments right now do you think we're
[99]
going to actually be able to take this
[100]
thing apart how many tesla motors have
[102]
you taken apart in your lifetime zero
[104]
and there's not a lot of stuff on the
[105]
internet about these
[107]
from what little from a little research
[108]
we did or what we could find online this
[110]
is what we need to take it apart so
[111]
we'll see yeah all right well
[116]
let's do right here
[128]
got blue stuff
[129]
what the heck
[131]
look at this we are spilling blue liquid
[135]
out of the motor right there what do you
[136]
think that is
[138]
you know lubricant that thing's not
[140]
slowing down it hasn't it hasn't changed
[142]
so should we catch that in like a bucket
[144]
or something what's inside of a tesla
[145]
motor the first thing that we found is
[147]
there's some blue coolant
[150]
okay i'm not gonna lick it don't lick
[151]
the blue stuff
[153]
it smells kind of like tuna fish with
[155]
the way that it's leaning right now i'm
[156]
guessing this entire section is full of
[159]
appearance
[164]
oh more blue kool-aid
[167]
oh what is that there's a bunch of the
[169]
coolant that came out of it so it must
[171]
be some sort of coolant reservoir if
[173]
you're doing like ludicrous mode or
[174]
something you're going super fast you
[175]
got to keep these motors cool not just
[177]
the batteries and so guessing that's
[179]
what that is it creates a little bit of
[180]
separation or sometimes when we're not
[182]
even in the car and the car is just
[184]
parked outside and it's like 105 degrees
[186]
outside it is so loud
[189]
yeah that might be the coolant running
[190]
through like it's running the coolant
[191]
through it hey hunter what's up
[199]
things are getting real here
[204]
whoa
[205]
i'm like a nascar guy pit crew
[208]
change those tires
[212]
oh yep more blue stuff
[216]
wow
[218]
that was pretty cool
[220]
[Music]
[237]
oh
[246]
[Music]
[249]
there we go a nice little gear
[252]
that's an important part to the tesla i
[254]
would think
[256]
oh yep yes i got it yes
[258]
i almost fumbled it but i got it what's
[260]
that that's a giant bearing oh this is
[262]
right here there's a whole thing spin
[265]
yeah
[266]
there you go tesla's driving should we
[268]
be concerned about the high voltage sign
[270]
no
[271]
is there still energy possibly
[273]
absolutely we're about to find out
[275]
we're gonna take off this top
[278]
that's like the matrix that movie tesla
[280]
model s motor
[282]
warranty void if seal is broken
[286]
oops
[288]
uh oh
[291]
if it does come off watch yourself
[294]
oh my gosh that's the high voltage area
[297]
that's the warranty right that's
[298]
unbelievable right there wow that is a
[300]
full on computer this is inside of the
[302]
motor giant computer in here that talks
[304]
to the motor that gets everything
[306]
turning
[306]
a lot of people have been saying lately
[308]
that a lot of the electric car companies
[309]
are like three to five years behind
[311]
where tesla currently is and it makes
[313]
sense this is a 2012 tesla model s we've
[316]
got cars coming out in 2020 from a lot
[318]
of the big time manufacturers i would be
[321]
surprised if their tech is as advanced
[322]
as what the tesla has in their old
[324]
school motor okay this is something
[326]
really really interesting we got the pcb
[328]
board right there it says high side low
[330]
side whatever that is and then you see
[332]
these they're almost like little spark
[333]
plug looking things see how shiny they
[335]
are but when you touch it
[337]
it's sticky
[339]
oh what is that
[341]
what is that stuff
[343]
what is that i don't know if it's toxic
[346]
or not we found the brains there's this
[347]
weird sticky gooey stuff right there
[349]
tons of pcb boards this is probably one
[351]
of the most advanced electronic motors
[354]
that you're going to find and that
[356]
brings us to today's sponsor
[358]
this is the jimu robot by ub tech
[362]
if you want to get to this point someday
[364]
you need to learn stem and you need to
[365]
learn science and the different
[366]
technologies someday you'll have the
[368]
stem knowledge and skills to be able to
[370]
build something amazing like this this
[371]
is the nebot 2.0 kit you can buy it
[374]
exclusively at apple whether you're in
[375]
the apple store or apple online just
[378]
like the tesla motor that we took apart
[379]
there's gears inside of this there's six
[382]
different motors inside of it not only
[383]
do you get to play with it but you can
[384]
build and you can code and you get to
[386]
learn with it all through the free jimu
[388]
app
[390]
you're not limited by what the robot
[392]
looks like on the package you can
[393]
actually take this apart reconfigure the
[396]
motors and build different creations
[398]
just as you want to do it it's really
[399]
cool you can control the robot from the
[401]
app there are lots of different series
[403]
of the jimmy robots mythical creatures
[405]
dragons unicorns doesn't matter if
[407]
you're 60 years old or eight years old
[409]
anybody over the age of eight can get
[410]
any of the jimmy robots the sky's the
[412]
limit thanks again to ubitech for
[413]
sponsoring this video if you're
[414]
interested in getting the jimu robot
[416]
mibot 2.0 kit check the link in the
[418]
description let's go take apart the rest
[420]
of this tesla motor back to the motor we
[422]
are going to get to the actual motor
[424]
part and the first step is going to be
[425]
this is the entire inverter i guess is
[427]
what they call it with all the pcb
[429]
boards and i think if we take off some
[431]
of these screws right here we might be
[432]
able to pull it out it might look super
[433]
cool let's do
[434]
it this is typically what mr jerry rig
[437]
everything would do where he takes
[438]
things apart properly and now i can kind
[440]
of see why he enjoys that
[442]
[Music]
[443]
okay
[447]
got it that is a flex capacitor right
[449]
there wow it's just a giant gap in there
[453]
it's like a triangle doesn't it look
[454]
like something tony stark would put on
[456]
his chest which they do say elon musk is
[458]
like tony stark okay the ark reactor we
[460]
are going in there's about 30 screws
[461]
here it's going to take me probably six
[464]
or seven minutes and for you it's going
[465]
to take like six seconds
[467]
[Music]
[469]
there's a screw somewhere in this that
[470]
we're missing so
[472]
this is the part where you just kind of
[473]
try to use some force
[476]
and
[477]
pull off
[479]
this part of it
[481]
i mean we already voided the warranty
[482]
right
[488]
okay
[491]
that's how we do it right there this is
[493]
a giant section of this transistor and i
[495]
can hold on to that so weird i said oh
[497]
that's a lot of stuff
[499]
see what i did there cougar i just
[501]
bashed that part off
[503]
is that the way you would have gone
[504]
about it i mean none if we're putting it
[506]
back together but
[507]
i think
[508]
not only did i avoid the warranty i
[510]
don't think we can ever put this thing
[511]
back together and it's all my fault i'm
[513]
sorry i know there's a lot of tesla fans
[515]
that are like what are you doing we
[516]
could have used that motor i know we
[517]
could have but you wouldn't have been
[518]
able to see inside of it that's the only
[519]
way we could take it apart right the
[521]
real brains of this thing the motor just
[523]
like the jimu robot that we had earlier
[525]
[Music]
[532]
finally
[536]
right here has some of the most
[537]
squishiest material ever i don't know
[540]
what kind of paste this is
[542]
probably shouldn't be touching it we are
[543]
really starting to lose this liquid red
[545]
and blue liquid we know this is cooling
[547]
i don't know what this one is but it's
[548]
coming out of the copper motor part of
[550]
it this is intense we are losing liquid
[552]
where's our blue pan
[553]
stay right there who knew that teslas
[555]
have oil inside of them like we you
[557]
don't have to get an oil change but
[558]
that's oil because the way that it's
[559]
mixing with the coolant it's something
[561]
that goes inside of it now we gotta
[562]
crack this motor open this is it this is
[564]
the moment
[566]
[Music]
[571]
i don't think we really pointed out this
[572]
side over here there's just three little
[574]
cables that's what this thing was
[576]
connecting to and there's some sort of
[577]
weird tape in there
[580]
i don't know okay back to the big moment
[591]
[Music]
[594]
okay this is the coolest thing ever
[598]
[Music]
[601]
these are the gears this is where the
[603]
torque comes from that makes a tesla go
[605]
0 to 60 in 2.3 seconds or whatever these
[608]
giant gears right here this must have
[610]
been where the oil was
[611]
that just twist around oh my gosh and
[614]
then look in here
[615]
there's like bearings inside of here
[617]
that roll around this one has little
[618]
balls inside of it and this one has
[620]
these rollers smells weird and then
[623]
giant bearings inside of there this is a
[625]
huge bearing so big wow how did these
[628]
things not get torn apart after years
[631]
and years of use and look how smooth
[633]
that is though that's where your
[634]
efficiency comes from of cruising down
[636]
the street
[640]
one of the coolest projects and one of
[642]
my favorite projects that we've ever
[643]
done what's inside of a tesla motor
[645]
and uh i don't know what else we can do
[647]
inside of tesla yeah this is it we did
[649]
it
[652]
are you grounded right now
[654]
i think it's grounded from fortnite
[658]
oh good joke
[660]
if i say that i don't know
[664]
don't lick the blue stuff
