Andrew Yang: A wealth tax is not the way to go - YouTube
Channel: Fox Business
[1]
all right it is a crowded field a number
[2]
of democrats who've already announced
[4]
they're uh
[5]
going to make a stable running for the
[6]
white house uh but before we had the
[8]
dozen or so now and
[10]
maybe a dozen or two dozen more who are
[12]
considering
[13]
uh a presidential run of their own uh
[15]
there was this guy the 2020
[17]
uh presidential candidate ender gang
[19]
he's an entrepreneur he's had some
[20]
success in the business world
[22]
uh which comes at a time when there's
[25]
another guy in the white house who had
[27]
some success in the business world and
[28]
made it to the white house uh
[30]
andrew yang very good to have you thanks
[32]
for having me neil it's a pleasure to be
[33]
here
[33]
so why are you doing this well i spent
[37]
the last
[37]
seven years helping create several
[39]
thousand jobs in detroit
[41]
cleveland st louis new orleans and other
[44]
regions of the country
[46]
and there i saw the aftermath of the
[48]
devastation and manufacturing jobs
[50]
i believe that the reason why donald
[51]
trump won in 2016
[53]
is that we automated away four million
[55]
manufacturing jobs in michigan ohio
[58]
pennsylvania wisconsin the swing states
[60]
he needed to win
[61]
and now my friends in silicon valley
[63]
know we're about to do the same thing to
[64]
millions of retail jobs call center jobs
[67]
fast food jobs and most disastrously
[69]
truck driving jobs
[70]
and so that's why i decided to run for
[71]
president to help us tran make
[73]
manage this transition that we're in the
[75]
midst of all right your wealth comes
[77]
from selling your
[78]
uh test prep company uh manhattan jimmy
[81]
right that's where a lot of it comes
[82]
from
[83]
you're not a billionaire but you're
[84]
you're up there um well it's very kind
[86]
yes definitely not a billionaire
[88]
multi-hunter
[90]
but i've had some success uh and
[92]
certainly i've looked around and seen
[94]
that
[94]
uh this country needs people like me to
[96]
step up okay um
[99]
you are advocating and this is a popular
[102]
theme among many who are competing
[104]
for the democratic nomination this idea
[106]
of universal
[107]
income but you extend it to pretty much
[109]
everybody if you're over 18
[110]
thousand dollars a month have had it
[112]
right yeah that's right and if you look
[114]
at the history of this idea it's deeply
[115]
american
[116]
where thomas paine was for it at the
[118]
founding of the country martin luther
[120]
king was for it milton friedman
[122]
the leading conservative economist
[124]
champion in the 70s
[125]
in one state it was never implemented it
[127]
it passed the house of representatives
[129]
twice
[129]
under richard nixon and it was
[131]
implemented 11 years later
[133]
in one state where now everyone in that
[134]
state gets between one and two thousand
[136]
dollars a year you're talking about
[137]
alaska yes
[140]
yes but that's a deeply republican state
[142]
it was passed by a republican governor
[144]
who asked the alaskan people who would
[145]
you rather get the oil money the
[146]
government
[147]
or you and what i'm saying is funding
[150]
that who would fund this how would you
[152]
pay for this
[152]
yes so the way we fund it and if you
[154]
look around you can see the headlines
[156]
amazon paid no taxes last year despite
[158]
record profits netflix paid no taxes
[160]
last year despite record profits
[162]
we have to do is we have to put the
[163]
american people in position to start
[166]
harvesting the gains from artificial
[168]
intelligence self-driving cars and
[170]
trucks advanced technology and with that
[172]
money what i call the tech
[173]
check we can then fund this dividend for
[175]
all americans all right but
[177]
i'm sorry i'm slow here i don't
[178]
understand i know you've got the
[179]
attention of mark zuckerberg most people
[181]
who like that idea
[183]
but how do you pay for it i mean
[186]
that would be over two trillion dollars
[188]
a year so the price tag comes down very
[190]
quickly because we're already spending
[192]
hundreds of billions of dollars on 126
[194]
existing welfare programs
[196]
which would be largely consolidated a
[198]
lot of
[199]
that would get replaced by this dividend
[202]
because people would vastly prefer a
[203]
thousand dollars in cash unconditional
[205]
to the hodgepodge
[206]
of benefits with administration and
[208]
monitoring that they currently
[209]
experience but there are guys like you
[210]
guys like
[211]
do you really need the thousand dollars
[213]
yourself well the great thing is we can
[214]
make this universal it's a right of
[216]
citizenship
[217]
and that means it's not uh stigmatized
[220]
transfer from rich to poor
[222]
but the great thing neil is that a lot
[223]
of this we can build a trickle up
[225]
economy from
[226]
people and families and communities up
[227]
because most this money would just go
[229]
right back into the economy
[230]
uh through main street businesses around
[232]
the country um
[234]
right now there's a an attitude of the
[236]
part of many in your party the
[237]
predominant
[238]
left wing in a party which a lot of
[239]
people say is the party right now
[241]
that that questions wealth and even guys
[244]
like yourself who succeed on your own
[246]
and do a great job
[247]
uh alexander ocasio-cortez who sort of
[249]
seems to be the
[251]
spokesman for that movement has said
[252]
that every billionaire is a policy
[254]
mistake
[255]
what did you make of that well you know
[257]
i think you got to look at the big
[258]
picture the big picture is where the
[260]
third inning
[261]
of the greatest economic and
[262]
technological transformation in the
[263]
history of the country
[265]
and billionaires are something of a
[266]
natural byproduct of that giant wave
[269]
and so right now what she's saying a
[271]
policy mistake those billionaires
[274]
created a lot of jobs for a lot of
[275]
opportunities
[276]
you know i i think that there are ways
[278]
that we can more effectively
[280]
uh have the american people benefit from
[283]
uh some of the huge winnings that people
[285]
have experienced during this economy
[286]
and i think most people are politics or
[288]
whatever these guys have created
[289]
gazillion dollar enterprises that employ
[292]
hundreds of thousands across the country
[294]
yeah and i'm in the camp as you suggest
[296]
that our system uh creates very very
[299]
wealthy people
[300]
who have uh been fortunate yeah but
[303]
they've done a lot of
[304]
uh value creation in many many ways
[306]
raise their taxes
[308]
well so the the to me the focus on
[310]
income taxes is not the right way to go
[312]
and i'm going to use jeff bezos as an
[314]
example
[314]
so jeff started amazon he has over 100
[317]
billion dollars in amazon stock
[320]
hasn't sold any right and so there's no
[322]
taxable event so a wealth tax
[324]
no i and so i think a wealth tax too is
[326]
not the right way to go
[328]
what we have to do is we have to join
[329]
every other advanced economy in the
[330]
world
[331]
and have a value-added tax because a
[333]
value-added tax is much much harder
[335]
for big multinational companies to
[337]
wriggle out of and game their way out
[339]
most of the european nations have such
[341]
attacks and they're not exactly on fire
[343]
well uh but you do see that they're able
[346]
to harness
[347]
more of the big winners um in terms of
[350]
the corporate companies that that are
[352]
generating lots of profits they are
[354]
able to get that tax revenue much more
[356]
than 10 of italian
[358]
citizens pay taxes even in a high
[361]
value-added tax
[362]
nation this is i only know as an italian
[364]
american
[365]
but i'm wondering you worry that good
[367]
intentions are going to mean
[369]
you're going to stick americans with a
[371]
good-sized bill well in this case what
[373]
we're trying to do is we're trying to
[374]
create a dividend for all american
[375]
adults the freedom dividend
[377]
where every american citizen is the
[379]
owner and shareholder of the richest and
[381]
most advanced economy in the history of
[383]
the world
[383]
we can easily afford a thousand dollar
[385]
dividend that's just going to go right
[387]
back into the economy
[388]
anyway it's going to create 2 million
[389]
jobs around the country and grow the
[391]
consumer economy by 8 to 10 percent
[393]
but you're talking about you know this
[395]
chance to deal with you know truckers
[397]
and manufacturing workers
[398]
should be at a job soon right now we're
[400]
at record low unemployment
[402]
um key groups are looking at the highest
[405]
employment levels
[407]
we have ever seen so a lot of people
[409]
step back
[410]
and and say well andrew's just missing
[412]
that big picture if it's so horrific
[414]
it would show up in the numbers and it's
[416]
not well if you look at our labor force
[418]
participation rate despite a small
[419]
bounce back it's still around 63 percent
[422]
which is close to a multi-decade low in
[423]
the same levels as el salvador and the
[425]
dominican republic
[426]
higher than when barack obama was
[427]
president so a lot of republicans will
[429]
counter that if you were to become the
[430]
party's nominee
[431]
and say been there done a lot better
[433]
than that well you you can
[435]
take a look at the curve and it goes uh
[436]
it it peaks around 2000 and then it
[438]
starts crashing
[440]
shortly thereafter despite a very small
[441]
amount of time before all this happens
[443]
well if you look at the statistics
[444]
almost one in five prime working age
[446]
american men
[447]
is out of the workforce right now and
[449]
this is year 10 of an expansion
[450]
these are the good times and we all know
[452]
that when the next downturn comes
[454]
then when the the tide comes in we're
[456]
going to see just what the reality is
[458]
for many businesses and families
[459]
all right
