[16]

[19]
liquid assets interview series
[21]
where we have candid conversations about
[24]
money and career
[25]
so sam thank you so much for joining me
[27]
today
[28]
thank you so much cardi it's a pleasure
[30]
to meet you yeah
[31]
great to meet you as well and you know
[33]
since we call this
[34]
liquid assets i have to ask um are you
[37]
drinking anything funds today what's
[39]
filling your cup
[41]
i am drinking some tea
[44]
yeah it's pretty amazing it's indian tea
[47]
and it's very aromatic and strong
[51]
i love that i love that i have a little
[52]
bit of chai tea myself
[54]
so love that love the smells and
[56]
everything coming through
[58]
great well we have some exciting
[60]
questions for you um so why don't we go
[62]
ahead and get things started
[63]
yes please go ahead perfect and so i'd
[67]
love to kick this off with more of a fun
[69]
icebreaker type question
[70]
um seeing that we're all working from
[73]
home and everything what is one
[75]
unusual or interesting thing on your
[77]
desk right now
[79]
oh i have it right here here is my
[82]
dumbbell
[84]
i because because you know one thing
[88]
that i've learned
[89]
in working from home initial days when
[91]
you're working from home
[93]
your mental and physical health kind of
[96]
takes the back seat because you're so
[97]
focused on work
[99]
um and one thing that i learned was we
[101]
can take better care of our customer
[104]
when we are taking better care of
[105]
ourselves so between the meetings or
[108]
whenever i get time i like to work out
[110]
a little bit that's amazing that's so
[113]
smart i'll i'll
[114]
go up and take a little walk around my
[116]
apartment or something but i never
[117]
thought to keep a dumbbell on my desk i
[118]
think
[119]
that's a life hack i might have to steal
[121]
[Laughter]
[123]
that's why i shared it carly yeah thank
[126]
you
[127]
um amazing okay so shifting gears a
[129]
little bit into more of those money and
[131]
career questions
[132]
people say that hindsight is everything
[134]
so i'd love to look backwards a little
[136]
bit
[136]
um and the question i have is if you
[138]
could go back in time
[139]
and meet with your 16 year old self
[142]
what's one piece of financial guidance
[144]
that you would share
[146]
i would tell my 16 year old self to
[149]
invest in myself and and you know that's
[153]
a lesson that
[154]
probably i have learned a little too
[157]
late in my life like i won't sit too
[159]
late but
[160]
it took me some time to get there
[162]
because as women
[164]
we tend to put our families before us we
[167]
tend to put our teams before us we tend
[169]
to put
[170]
everybody else before us but the way
[172]
what
[173]
investing in myself looks like is you
[176]
know it is important for my mental and
[178]
physical well-being
[179]
and it is important for my career
[181]
development because if i have to take
[183]
that
[184]
course i will if i want to pursue a
[186]
certification i will
[188]
if i have to invest in a degree i will
[190]
and if i have to invest in things like
[192]
travel and um you know a better wardrobe
[196]
for myself
[197]
or if i want to give myself um you know
[200]
a
[201]
little prize i i will do that because
[203]
that is important for my happiness
[205]
and my well-being so true i love that
[208]
it's so
[209]
i feel like in order to invest in others
[211]
we need to invest in ourselves first
[213]
so i love that absolutely yeah
[217]
amazing and another look-back question
[219]
maybe a little further down the line
[220]
from when you were 16
[222]
i think something that so many people
[223]
look forward to is that first paycheck
[225]
they get from that first job
[227]
so i'd love to know once you got that
[228]
paycheck what did you do with it did you
[230]
save it did you have a specific thing in
[232]
mind that you wanted to buy with it
[234]
um currently i'm a foodie when i got my
[237]
first paycheck
[238]
i am happy to share that i spent it all
[241]
on food
[242]
and i went to all my favorite
[244]
restaurants that month to eat
[246]
everywhere that i wanted to eat and i
[248]
could never afford to
[251]
i still i i look back and i have no
[253]
regrets
[255]
that's amazing that's such a good way to
[256]
spend it do you remember what kind of
[258]
food you got or what's your favorite
[260]
food now
[261]
now my favorite food is indian food
[263]
pakistani food i like more spices but at
[266]
that time
[267]
i remember that i had my first sushi
[270]
meal
[271]
which was a very special meal because i
[272]
had never had sushi in my life
[274]
and i went to my first lebanese
[276]
restaurant
[277]
which was another delicacy because i had
[279]
never had it
[281]
that's definitely a great splurge for
[282]
that trying sushi for the first time
[285]
i love it so now
[288]
present tense what's one big financial
[291]
goal that you might be saving up for
[293]
right now so
[296]
now my uh mantra on saving
[299]
is that i try to max out my retirement
[302]
accounts
[303]
and i think that that's the goal that i
[305]
don't hope to retire anytime soon and i
[307]
hope to keep working
[309]
but that is something that i religiously
[311]
try to max out
[312]
my retirement accounts and there is one
[315]
advice that i'll
[316]
give to my fellow colleagues and uh
[319]
young women as well
[321]
that save when you can and again
[324]
investing in yourself
[325]
first safe for your retirement then also
[328]
say for other goals
[329]
but maxing out your retirement is an
[332]
important tool and it's going to
[335]
it's going to pay you over time right
[337]
that's a great way to think about it and
[339]
i think
[339]
my next question follows up on that
[341]
really well i know you said you're not
[342]
looking to retire anytime soon but you
[344]
have
[345]
a dream retirement in mind of what you'd
[347]
like to do once you have
[349]
all of that free time i would love to be
[353]
on a beach and i'll tell you that i i
[356]
would like to continue
[357]
working as long as i can i would totally
[360]
work in a way where it contributes to
[362]
the world
[363]
like writing books or teaching or taking
[366]
like a back seat and a more relaxed job
[369]
or a more relaxed task
[371]
but yeah somewhere on a beach give me
[373]
some palm trees
[374]
give me some good food and that's my
[377]
dream retirement
[378]
that sounds perfect i want that right
[380]
now right
[382]
yeah especially in the pandemic
[384]
absolutely yeah
[386]
amazing so now shifting gears again to
[388]
talk a little bit more about your career
[390]
you've had some amazing experiences
[393]
throughout your career having
[394]
your background in medicine and public
[396]
health and now your current role at
[398]
walmart
[398]
but what i'd love to know is if you
[400]
weren't doing this your specific role
[402]
right now
[403]
what other role do you think you would
[405]
have i know you mentioned maybe being a
[406]
teacher or something down the road would
[408]
be a dream is that
[409]
kind of what you'd love to be doing
[410]
right now as well actually
[412]
i have taught along with working at
[415]
walmart or previously my job
[417]
when i was at the health department i
[419]
used to teach in an mph
[420]
program and i did that for eight years i
[423]
have had many
[424]
different jobs even outside of medicine
[426]
and science i was a radio jockey at one
[428]
point
[429]
and i worked in media quite a bit it is
[432]
very hard for me to imagine
[433]
not doing public health or not being in
[435]
health care because that is what my
[437]
passion is
[438]
um i think if i was not in my current
[441]
role
[441]
i would be pursuing something else but
[444]
within health care
[446]
yeah that makes sense i mean you're
[448]
you're impacting people's lives every
[449]
day with the work you do so that's
[450]
really inspiring and
[452]
and thank you for it for everything
[453]
you're doing as well that's amazing
[456]
um and another career question is what
[459]
advice do you have for
[460]
women who might be entering the
[462]
workforce in 2021 whether they're
[464]
changing careers or coming right out of
[466]
college what do you think is one
[468]
piece of advice that they would benefit
[469]
from
[472]
i would say one common mistake that i
[474]
see
[475]
young women making is that don't
[478]
underestimate yourself you know you are
[481]
worth
[482]
more than you think you are capable of
[485]
more than you think always keep
[487]
challenging yourself reinventing
[489]
yourself
[490]
and don't underestimate your abilities
[492]
if there is a new skill set that you
[494]
think you don't have today
[496]
but you would like to have go pursue it
[498]
go pursue your dream
[499]
apply for the dream job and and you know
[502]
don't underestimate yourself
[504]
yeah i love that and that ties back to
[506]
what you were saying before about how
[508]
when you want to improve your skill set
[510]
you take a course on it or
[512]
taking that time to really learn and
[514]
pursue what you're passionate about
[515]
that's so important to share
[517]
um and for women to pursue it to achieve
[519]
their dreams
[520]
well i think we have a few minutes left
[522]
so i have a few more fun questions that
[523]
i'd love to
[524]
to ask if that's okay part of it amazing
[527]
okay first one thinking back to money
[530]
true or false
[531]
money can't buy happiness
[536]
so money can buy happiness it it can't
[539]
make you happy it's not the soul factor
[541]
that's gonna make you happy
[543]
but it is easier to be happy with money
[546]
than it is to be without money which is
[549]
why i would say we always have to
[551]
negotiate our salary it's
[552]
not all that you work for but it is
[555]
important part
[556]
of what you work for very true next
[558]
question what has been your favorite
[560]
work from home purchase so far aside
[562]
from the dumbbell
[564]
[Laughter]
[566]
my favorite work from home purchase is
[568]
actually my elliptical
[570]
because you know being in office you get
[572]
to walk around quite a lot
[574]
and initial days of work from home i
[577]
felt like i was not taking care of
[578]
myself
[579]
so it makes me feel a lot better it
[581]
gives me those endorphins that
[583]
get me going and i am in a upbeat mood
[586]
throughout the day
[586]
so that's really my favorite purchase
[589]
during this pandemic
[591]
i love that i found the same thing when
[592]
i started working from home i had to
[594]
force myself to wake up in the morning
[596]
and do the same walk that i would do for
[598]
my for my commute just to make sure i
[599]
was getting that activity but i like
[601]
your idea with the elliptical for the
[603]
you know one other purchase that i would
[606]
like to mention i did buy my first puppy
[611]
because i don't think of him as a thing
[613]
more like you know a
[615]
member of the family but really that has
[617]
brought a lot of excitement to my family
[619]
and
[620]
i think that has been great as well oh
[622]
wow that's really exciting
[624]
okay last question in honor of
[626]
international women's day and women's
[628]
history month
[629]
who is one woman who has inspired you in
[632]
your career
[635]
that's a very hard question that is very
[637]
hard for me to say
[639]
to pick out one woman that that i would
[642]
say
[643]
has inspired me but i'll tell you that i
[646]
still read back on the story of florence
[648]
nightingale
[649]
when i was a little girl and i used to
[652]
think about healthcare that was a story
[654]
that i would read
[655]
again and again and again because you
[658]
know the
[658]
spirit of helping human beings
[661]
i think it impacted me at a deeper level
[664]
and i would say that that's
[666]
one moment that impacted me at a very
[668]
young age and brought me
[670]
to the field where i am yeah that's
[672]
amazing she's definitely
[674]
a woman i think we can all look up to
[676]
and admire
[677]
so i love that answer great well those
[680]
are all of the questions that i have
[682]
thank you again sam for
[684]
for allowing us to shine light on your
[686]
amazing career your
[688]
amazing guidance for other women
[690]
enjoying the workforce i think
[692]
you have some amazing insights and
[693]
experiences that i love being able to
[696]
highlight
[697]
thank you so much cardi it's a pleasure
[699]
to speak with you and thank you so much
[701]
for the opportunity
[703]
yeah yeah thank you as well and everyone
[705]
stay tuned for
[706]
our next episode of liquid assets we're
[708]
excited to see you then
