Costs of Quality - YouTube

[3]
Hi everyone In this video and the next 2 videos we are
[7]
going discuss about few concepts related to quality.
[10]
Such as costs of quality, Quality control, Quality Assurance, Quality Management and
[17]
Total Quality Management.
[19]
Here we are discussing the costs of quality.
[24]
What is meant by Quality Product?
[27]
We know that, a quality product is one which does what it is designed to do.
[34]
Or a product which does what it is expected to do.
[38]
This means, the product is fit for purpose.
[42]
We also know that, a quality product is one which matches the standards or features or
[49]
performances described in the user specifications.
[53]
This means, the product confirms to specifications So for a buyer, a right quality product is
[59]
one which is fit for purpose and confirms to specifications.
[63]
Now let us discuss Costs of Quality: The costs of Quality can be defined as, the
[72]
cost of good quality & the cost of poor quality.
[76]
In other words, the costs of Quality can be defined as, the cost of ensuring and assuring
[82]
quality & the loss incurred when the quality is not achieved.
[87]
So the quality related costs include: the cost of appraisal and prevention activities
[93]
& the cost of quality failure.
[97]
The cost of failure is divided into the costs of internal failure and the costs of external
[102]
failure.
[103]
First Let us see, the 2 costs under cost of good quality: or the 2 costs under cost of
[112]
ensuring and assuring quality ie, Prevention Costs & Appraisal Costs
[120]
Prevention Costs These are the costs incurred to prevent or
[124]
minimize defects or failures.
[128]
These are the costs of all activities that are designed to prevent poor quality from
[133]
arising.
[134]
Some examples are cost of building quality into design
[140]
cost of quality improvement projects cost of quality education and training
[145]
cost of running quality problem-solving groups, ie quality circles
[153]
Appraisal Costs These are the costs incurred as part of the
[157]
inspection process to make sure, incoming materials and outgoing finished products are
[162]
of the expected quality.
[164]
ie, the Costs of testing and inspections to confirm quality requirements are met.
[171]
Examples are: Cost for Checking and testing purchased goods
[176]
and services Cost of quality Audits
[180]
Cost for Field testing
[183]
By looking at the 2 costs we can say: Prevention Costs are the costs incurred in order to minimize
[189]
appraisal costs.
[192]
One might argue that, these costs are high, and it will be more cost effective to spend
[197]
less on such preventions activities and simply deal with few defects now and then.
[203]
Is this so?
[204]
The answer is no.
[206]
Because the cost of quality failures can be very high.
[210]
Even in recent times we have seen big firms facing crisis’s due to quality failures.
[216]
So we have to understand that there is always scope for improvement & cost of “getting
[221]
it wrong” is much bigger than cost of “getting it right”.
[226]
Now let us see, the 2 costs under costs of poor quality, or the 2 sessions under loss
[232]
incurred when the quality is not achieved.
[234]
Costs of Failure ie, internal failure costs & external failure costs
[242]
Internal failure costs These are the costs arising from quality failures,
[247]
where the problem is identified and corrected before the product reaches the customer.
[254]
Problems are caused by defects in input products or by inefficiencies in the processes.
[260]
Here, before the product is delivered to end user, the non conformance to requirement is
[267]
identified and corrective actions are taken.
[271]
Hence the customer dissatisfaction from receiving a faulty product can be avoided, but still
[278]
there are chances of dissatisfaction due to delayed delivery.
[283]
Some examples are: Cost of scrapping
[286]
Cost of reworking Cost of delays
[289]
Cost of failure analysis
[293]
External failure costs These are the costs arising from quality failures,
[298]
where the problem is identified and corrected after the product reaches the customer.
[304]
This can cause customer dissatisfaction and sometimes losing loyal customers.
[310]
So we can easily understand that, the costs of external failures need to be avoided or
[316]
reduced to the minimum.
[318]
Some examples are: cost of customer claims for compensation
[323]
cost of repairing or replacing cost of reputational damage
[329]
cost of lost customer
[332]
So we discussed the four main categories of costs of quality.
[337]
We learned that there are costs related to assuring or maintaining quality.
[342]
Still, cost of “getting it wrong” is much bigger than cost of “getting it right”.
[349]
Hence efforts are made to assure quality.
[353]
These days there is an increased emphasis on “getting it right first time” through
[358]
quality management.
[360]
In the next 2 videos we will discuss few more concepts related to quality.
