[0]
it's obvious i'm not a spring chicken
[1]
when it comes to
[3]
getting close to retirement and so my
[4]
husband and i have been doing
[6]
extensive research on what places would
[9]
be great for us to retire in the united
[11]
states so with our research we
[12]
discovered
[13]
there's three things that are super
[14]
important to us one is
[16]
how affordable the houses are two is
[19]
how high are the property taxes wicked
[21]
important and
[22]
three how good is the health care some
[25]
of these states are going to surprise
[26]
you because they totally surprised me
[28]
so let's go ahead and get on our reading
[30]
glasses and start going over some
[32]
numbers on why
[33]
we picked some places won't be much of a
[35]
surprise to many of you
[36]
is florida but it's number five for many
[39]
reasons for the economy is
[41]
ranked 31st in the country for crime and
[43]
safety it's
[44]
ranked 27th for lifestyle of course is
[46]
going to be ranked number one because
[48]
there's a million things for retired
[50]
people to do in florida
[52]
between golfing and swimming and the
[54]
beaches
[55]
not only that florida has communities
[56]
that are completely dedicated just
[59]
for people that are retired have you
[60]
ever been out to the villages
[62]
holy cow that is completely one
[65]
encapsulated
[66]
whole town for just people that have
[69]
retired
[70]
years ago i used to live out there and
[71]
believe it or not that used to be a
[72]
manufactured home park
[74]
that's how it started and that man built
[76]
that whole empire
[78]
now it's got healthcare facilities it
[80]
has you know restaurants
[82]
and engulfing and swimming and
[85]
everything you could possibly imagine if
[86]
you're wanting to retire to florida
[88]
definitely check out the villages
[90]
they're not sponsored by any means of
[91]
the imagination
[92]
but it's a really cool place but it's
[94]
still number five on my list
[95]
mostly because it's kind of unaffordable
[98]
the cost of living is ranked at a 28
[100]
and housing affordability is a 42.
[104]
that's high that's high on my list i
[106]
mean you got to remember
[107]
i'm only like ranking basically 50
[109]
states in the you know
[111]
all the 50 states and that's like 42. i
[113]
will say the property taxes in florida
[116]
made it so it was ranked 25th uh as far
[119]
as property taxes but
[120]
i don't know about you i hate paying
[122]
property taxes and i pay less in
[123]
property taxes here in louisiana than i
[125]
did
[126]
in florida and if anybody tries to tell
[128]
you that oh well
[129]
you know you pay more in property taxes
[131]
in you know in florida but you know you
[133]
don't have state tax
[134]
and it makes everything cheaper i can
[136]
tell you from personal experience
[138]
the utilities were more expensive
[140]
everything was more expensive in florida
[142]
when we moved to louisiana it was like
[143]
we got a pay raise now really high on
[145]
our list was one of those states i would
[147]
have never in a million years
[149]
even thought of until we started
[150]
compiling this list
[152]
and it was iowa of all places not only
[154]
does it have
[155]
a really good economy the crime and
[158]
safety is
[158]
ranked number 13 in the country health
[161]
care though
[162]
majorly important it's ranked number
[164]
three in the country
[166]
wow i would have never thought that the
[167]
cost of living is ranked number 13
[170]
in the country and housing affordability
[173]
is ranked number one
[174]
the property taxes are a little high but
[176]
the cost of living there
[177]
is still very low and if you're looking
[180]
for things to do
[181]
well it's an unusual state when it comes
[184]
to
[184]
like recreation i'm not gonna lie i just
[187]
looked on their website
[188]
you know what to do in iowa and it has
[192]
it has the tallest gnome i mean like who
[194]
wouldn't want to see the tallest gnome
[196]
in your retirement years but if
[198]
you're anything like me and you're
[199]
wanting to retire i don't necessarily
[201]
need to like travel the state i just
[203]
want to be able to have a nice
[205]
healthy place to stay and that's
[207]
extremely affordable
[208]
the weather in iowa well that's a little
[211]
a little different
[212]
if you're trying to escape the snow well
[214]
i may not be your
[215]
your state but if you're okay with a
[218]
little bit of uh
[219]
the white stuff then you know retirement
[221]
there looks good
[222]
it'd be something to definitely check
[224]
out the next one we're going to go to
[225]
and hopefully i don't get demonetized
[227]
for trying to sing but here we go
[229]
west virginia mama
[233]
take me home to retirement
[236]
it's a great state it has all sorts of
[238]
great things
[239]
as far as our ranking so it was ranked
[242]
number eight
[242]
in economy crime and safety is ranked
[244]
number 16.
[246]
lifestyle is ranked number six in the
[248]
country for healthcare though this is
[250]
where it gets a little
[252]
it's ranked 29th so that it was a little
[255]
maybe you're just going to find an area
[257]
that's going to be close to hospitals
[259]
west virginia as far as property taxes
[260]
are concerned is ranked number seventh
[262]
in the country
[263]
is affordability as far as property
[265]
taxes cost of living it's ranked 20th in
[267]
the country and affordability is ranked
[270]
a number eight
[271]
so if you're looking for an affordable
[272]
place to set up your home
[274]
go ahead and look at west virginia
[276]
another thing you know because i talk
[277]
about affordable
[278]
housing options like manufactured homes
[280]
west virginia is a manufactured home
[282]
friendly state like many other states
[285]
like south carolina
[286]
is that who we're going to look at next
[288]
nope arkansas
[289]
no we're looking at arkansas home state
[292]
of bill clinton
[292]
and also to the beautiful ozarks love
[295]
that have you seen
[296]
the show it's really good we made a
[297]
choice to move our family to a more
[299]
peaceful place
[300]
i highly recommend it the biggest
[302]
disadvantage of living in arkansas
[304]
the crime rates are kind of high there's
[306]
a lot to do in arkansas
[308]
like i said mentioned before you have
[309]
the ozarks and
[311]
these places as well arkansas has plenty
[313]
of state parks you can visit
[314]
like the mount magazine state park and
[317]
the creator of dynamon state park
[319]
if you're looking for something even
[320]
more scenic you can visit the buffalo
[322]
national river
[323]
and let's not forget about hot springs
[325]
that's known for its healing waters
[327]
the great thing about arkansas is that
[329]
it does have low property taxes
[331]
healthcare is very inexpensive and
[333]
accessible and the cost of living there
[336]
is super cheap
[337]
so arkansas is a great place to be
[339]
looking at especially if you're
[341]
thinking about doing something with a
[342]
more affordable home
[344]
options like a manufactured home or a
[346]
tiny home they have a lot of
[348]
unrestricted lots that will allow you
[349]
for tiny homes
[351]
and they also allow for manufactured
[354]
homes there's plenty areas that will
[355]
allow for that
[356]
so if you're wanting some place warm
[358]
anyone don't want to go up north and
[359]
shovel snow
[360]
arkansas does have a little bit of snow
[362]
just a little bit but
[364]
arkansas might be the state for you this
[366]
state is like my favorite state only
[367]
because when i was a kid it was one of
[369]
the first states that i could spell that
[370]
had really long letters
[372]
m-i-s-s-i-s-s i-p-p-p-i
[375]
mississippi i've loved doing that as a
[377]
kid well mississippi
[378]
is ranked uh really well on our list
[381]
it's number 18
[382]
um as far as affordability but there
[384]
were some other factors
[385]
as well the property taxes it was ranked
[388]
17th
[388]
in the country and so even though that
[391]
seems a little bit high
[392]
it isn't that high also with mississippi
[394]
they do allow for
[396]
manufactured homes there's plenty of
[397]
areas that have beautiful manufactured
[400]
home
[400]
parks for retired people so definitely
[402]
that's something you if you're
[403]
interested in you can check those out
[405]
and the cost of living
[406]
is so inexpensive that is like it's so
[410]
so cheap so cheap to live in mississippi
[413]
so
[413]
i mean it's beautiful out there i don't
[415]
know if you've ever been out there you
[416]
don't have
[417]
the snow problem as much they do have
[419]
their fair share of hurricanes just like
[421]
we do here in louisiana
[422]
of course you've got the southern flair
[424]
you know everybody's friendly in the
[425]
south and there's plenty to do there in
[427]
mississippi as well like this
[428]
mississippi is known for its scenic
[430]
spots like jackson mississippi
[432]
also known for its crafting agriculture
[434]
and attractions
[435]
like golf and sports if you have family
[438]
coming in town and you want to go
[439]
to the great outdoors there's plenty of
[441]
campgrounds throughout mississippi
[442]
but you can find many places that have
[444]
music venues that play the blues and
[446]
lots of places to eat
[448]
that specialize in boiled crawfish fried
[450]
catfish
[451]
and baked macaroni and cheese it's
[453]
ranked number nine for its economy
[455]
and the crime and safety is ranked a oh
[459]
24. it's like in the middle of the road
[461]
you can be it's meeting you halfway as
[463]
far as their crime statistics
[465]
i feel terrible if i didn't mention the
[467]
great state of louisiana
[469]
it wasn't running to number 24 on our
[471]
list as overall score
[473]
of place to live my parents actually
[475]
lived in florida
[477]
and then they moved to louisiana and
[479]
they've enjoyed it here
[480]
there is a state income tax here in
[482]
louisiana but our health care
[484]
facilities have been fantastic they have
[486]
taken great care of my dad
[488]
when he had cancer not once but twice in
[490]
his lifetime he had kidney cancer when
[492]
he lived in florida
[493]
and then he had cancer here lymphoma
[495]
when he moved here louisiana and he's
[497]
done fantastic
[499]
with the medical care that he's gotten
[500]
here his doctors have been amazing
[502]
so if louisiana was on your list you
[504]
definitely want to take a
[505]
closer look at it but i will say we do
[507]
flood i can tell you that from personal
[510]
experience
[510]
south louisiana is known for our
[512]
flooding half the state is
[514]
is below seafood level just know that so
[517]
if you're thinking about moving here and
[518]
building a house
[520]
just know that you're going to need
[521]
flood insurance and
[523]
know how to make a pot of gumbo i'll
[525]
teach you now a lot of people that are
[527]
retiring they do look at texas
[529]
because there is lots of plots of land
[531]
in texas that you can get for
[533]
like super cheap did you know the
[535]
average cost of a lot
[536]
throughout the united states is about
[537]
three thousand dollars and there's
[539]
plenty of those lots in texas
[541]
the thing is is when you find cheaper
[543]
land you can't find
[544]
a lot of other things like a hospital
[547]
that's important
[548]
and the property taxes there are very
[550]
very high
[551]
um the cost of living has been average
[553]
within the united states
[555]
and you're just going to have to find
[556]
the right city in texas for you
[559]
for me texas is off the list completely
[562]
i've lived there once
[563]
never going back not to say anything bad
[566]
about people that live in texas it has
[567]
nothing to do with it i just
[569]
i just it wasn't for me it wasn't my
[571]
thing
[572]
and it didn't make my list but there was
[574]
the overall score or two
[575]
it was ranked 37th as far as economy
[579]
lifestyle it was ranked 27th healthcare
[581]
is ranked 24th
[583]
and cost of living it was ranked 12th
[585]
home affordability though
[587]
it was ranked 27th and if you go to
[589]
austin texas
[590]
or san antonio texas or houston texas
[593]
those numbers have exploded with this
[596]
current housing market
[598]
houses that used to be like 120 000 are
[601]
now
[601]
175 to 180 000 and it just keeps going
[605]
up because you know the housing market
[607]
is going nuts so which state surprised
[609]
you the most that you would possibly
[610]
retire to
[611]
which one do you think eddie and i
[613]
should retire to that would be another
[614]
one
[615]
why don't we tell you i'm going to go
[616]
ahead and have this haircut and i'm
[617]
going to have this accent because i
[618]
think this is what it goes with
