10 Reasons YNAB is the BEST Budget App - YouTube

Channel: Smart Family Money

I've been budgeting for 13 years. For the last聽 six years, I've used You Need a Budget or YNAB for聽聽
[5]
short. Despite the fact that YNAB is not a cheap聽 software, I really wish we had started using it聽聽
[10]
much sooner. Since my husband and I started using聽 YNAB together, we've gained confidence in managing聽聽
[15]
our money, clarity in making decisions and better聽 communication about where we're headed together.聽聽
[21]
And that's all besides the benefit of consistently聽 growing our net worth year after year. And we did聽聽
[27]
all that while going through two job losses and聽 you know... a crazy number of unprecedented times.聽聽
[33]
The first seven years of budgeting, we mostly used聽 a combination of physical envelopes stuffed with聽聽
[37]
cash and a homemade spreadsheet. We also tried聽 out Mint.com and Dave Ramsey's Every Dollar. And聽聽
[42]
I'll explain why I don't think those come close to聽 what YNAB has to offer. In this video I'm going to聽聽
[47]
count down the top 10 reasons I think YNAB is the聽 best budget software out there. Number 10. With聽聽
[54]
YNAB you always look forward instead of backwards聽 with your money. Almost every other budgeting tool聽聽
[60]
spends most of its time looking backwards. This聽 is the biggest difference between Mint and YNAB.聽聽
[65]
Mint sends you pretty reports at the end of the聽 month to tell you where your money went, but how聽聽
[70]
does that help you? The money you spent is already聽 gone. That's like trying to diet by having someone聽聽
[77]
email you to say last Tuesday, you shouldn't聽 have eaten that whole package of Oreo cookies.聽聽
[82]
Instead, with YNAB you make decisions about how聽 you're going to use the money you already have.聽聽
[87]
What job does that money need to do for you?聽 Every time you get paid, you assign that money聽聽
[91]
to the categories that need it. Number nine. YNAB聽 makes it easy to set targets for every expense.聽聽
[98]
When I was trying to budget with paper envelopes聽 or my homemade spreadsheet, I tried to limit the聽聽
[102]
number of budget categories I had because it聽 was too difficult to keep track of too many.聽聽
[106]
YNAB makes it easy to make categories that you can聽 have a category for everything. It's such a relief聽聽
[111]
to save up ten dollars a month or twenty dollars a聽 month for something that I know is coming up once聽聽
[116]
a year. This has allowed me to confidently switch聽 to yearly billing on things like car insurance聽聽
[120]
because I know I can easily budget for it every聽 month. In my first couple years using YNAB聽聽
[125]
anytime an expense surprised me, I set up a聽 new category so I could save for the next time聽聽
[130]
I know it'll come around. Number eight. YNAB is聽 more hands-on than other budget apps. This might聽聽
[136]
sound like a bad thing but it's really a positive.聽 You're not going to make progress with your money聽聽
[141]
unless you pay attention to it. Apps like Mint聽 just automatically import everything and put聽聽
[146]
it right into your budget and make it way too easy聽 to ignore your money. YNAB can import transactions聽聽
[151]
from your bank account but it'll still require聽 you to put those transactions into categories聽聽
[156]
and if you really use YNAB, you're going to have聽 to regularly pay attention to where your money is聽聽
[160]
going and that's sort of the point of budgeting,聽 right? Number seven. YNAB helps you make your聽聽
[166]
money work with your own life priorities. YNAB聽 does have a set of rules that go along with the聽聽
[171]
software but it's really just about making your聽 money work for your goals. Do you want to pay聽聽
[176]
off debt? Great. YNAB can help you do it. Do you聽 want to save up to go back to school? YNAB can聽聽
[181]
help you with that. Do you want to save up for a聽 pet alpaca? Whatever you want, YNAB can help you聽聽
[187]
get there. Personally I want to use my money to聽 create a comfortable home life for my kids, fund聽聽
[192]
their education, and save for my retirement. YNAB聽 helps me to see how I'm doing on those goals and聽聽
[197]
how much I have left over for a little extra fun聽 along the way. Like, you know, maybe a package of聽聽
[201]
Oreos. Number six. YNAB works effectively in the聽 real world. YNAB rule number three is roll with聽聽
[208]
the punches which means that when your priorities聽 change, your budget should change with it in real聽聽
[213]
time. And I don't know about you but I feel like聽 real life throws a lot of punches at me. This is聽聽
[219]
the biggest problem I had with Every Dollar. It聽 doesn't allow you to easily move money from one聽聽
[223]
category to another and work in real life. It聽 feels too rigid and not flexible enough for the聽聽
[228]
uncertainty of real life. Number five. YNAB allows聽 you to effectively budget together with a partner.聽聽
[234]
My husband and I both have the YNAB app on our聽 phones and can both put transactions in on the go.聽聽
[238]
I'm the numbers person in our family so I handle聽 most of the heavy work of budgeting but we can聽聽
[243]
use YNAB together to have productive conversations聽 and make well-informed decisions about our money聽聽
[248]
together as a team. Number four. YNAB works really聽 well with credit card spending. When you spend聽聽
[254]
money on a credit card, it automatically moves the聽 money into a category to pay off the credit card.聽聽
[259]
Then the money is ready when you're ready to聽 pay it off at the end of the month. It helps聽聽
[262]
use credit cards responsibly without going into聽 debt. Using YNAB has allowed me the confidence聽聽
[267]
to use credit cards for our everyday spending聽 earning us hundreds of dollars in credit card聽聽
[272]
rewards every year. I never had the confidence聽 to do that before using YNAB. Every Dollar,聽聽
[276]
on the other hand, doesn't allow you to use credit聽 cards for spending at all. Number three. YNAB also聽聽
[282]
allows you to track cash or gift cards in your聽 budget. We don't use a ton of cash anymore but聽聽
[287]
it's really nice to be able to track it when we聽 want to. Mint, on the other hand, doesn't have a聽聽
[291]
way to track anything that isn't an online account聽 so it can't handle cash or gift cards. Number two.聽聽
[297]
YNAB has debt payoff planning. This is a brand聽 new feature that YNAB just added in late 2021聽聽
[302]
and I feel like it was the last thing that was聽 needed to make YNAB the ultimate budgeting tool.聽聽
[307]
You can now track your loan accounts and see how聽 making extra payments will make changes to the聽聽
[311]
length of your loan and the interest you're gonna聽 pay over time. And finally the number one reason I聽聽
[316]
think YNAB is the best budgeting tool out there聽 is that YNAB is not free. Okay, I know you're聽聽
[322]
thinking I've lost my mind on this one but hear me聽 out. A lot of budgeting tools like Mint are free聽聽
[327]
to use but nothing is really free in life. Mint聽 is paid for by ads and financial offers. Their聽聽
[334]
whole purpose is to collect your information聽 so they can sell you on financial products.聽聽
[338]
YNAB's whole purpose in existing is to聽 provide you with the best budgeting tool.聽聽
[342]
That's it. That's how they make their money. If聽 you think their tool isn't great and isn't helping聽聽
[347]
you reach your financial goals, you'll stop paying聽 their subscription fees. YNAB's goals are aligned聽聽
[352]
with your goals and I think that's worth paying聽 for when you're talking about one of the most聽聽
[356]
important parts of your life. If you're ready聽 to give YNAB a try, use my link down below and聽聽
[361]
start your free one month trial. And if you聽 think there's a better budget tool out there,聽聽
[365]
I'd love to hear in the comments down below.聽 I haven't found anything that can touch the聽聽
[369]
functionality of YNAB but if you have I totally聽 want to hear about it. Next up, watch my video聽聽
[374]
about the things that most new budgeters forget聽 to include in their budgets. I bet there's at聽聽
[379]
least one thing that you forgot to include. I'll聽 put the link to that video right here for you.
