馃挸 How I got a Credit Card as a Student Philippines | Credit Cards for Beginners | BDO Visa Classic - YouTube
Channel: Nicole Alba
[0]
fellow friends brentbaum i have achieved
[2]
an important milestone in my
[4]
early adulting journey i got my first
[7]
credit card
[8]
before we start some context no i'm
[10]
currently 20 years old and i'm still a
[12]
student
[12]
i'm not employed which means that i
[14]
don't have a stable source of income but
[16]
now
[16]
i have this shiny new sexy bdo credit
[19]
card
[21]
[Music]
[25]
yo what's up friends welcome back to
[27]
this week's video if you're new here
[29]
what's up my name is nicole and i make
[30]
weekly videos on personal finance
[32]
investing self-development and other fun
[34]
and interesting stuff
[35]
so i've been wanting to get a credit
[36]
card for so long i've been watching so
[38]
many videos about credit card churning
[40]
hacking the reward system i was so ready
[42]
to earn miles and start flying for free
[46]
having a credit card makes you feel like
[47]
such an adult no like you feel so much
[49]
power coming from this small
[51]
plastic card anyway this is not going to
[53]
be a complete credit card 101 video
[55]
i'll probably make a more comprehensive
[57]
video for credit cards in the future
[59]
because i still need to take the time to
[61]
learn about it because i'm also new to
[62]
the credit card game
[64]
but for this video there are a few
[65]
things i want to talk about number one
[68]
why did i get a credit card so a lot of
[69]
people seem to be scared of credit cards
[71]
like credit cards are evil aren't they
[73]
dangerous
[74]
why would you do that next why did i get
[77]
this specific card so this is a bdo visa
[79]
classic
[80]
why did i apply for this one and then i
[82]
want to talk about my experience in
[84]
applying for this card
[85]
so what were the requirements i needed
[86]
to submit what forms did i need to fill
[88]
out
[89]
essentially what i did to get this and
[91]
then i'm going to talk about some of my
[92]
thoughts
[93]
some tips that i can share if ever
[95]
you're planning to apply for your first
[96]
credit card as well
[98]
also if you're already thinking about
[99]
applying for cards you can sign up with
[101]
the links in my description
[102]
to apply for a citibank credit card just
[105]
for transparency's sake i'm a citibank
[107]
affiliate which means that i get a
[108]
commission if ever you successfully
[110]
apply
[110]
through the links in my description
[112]
alright i have four main reasons on why
[114]
i applied for a credit card
[116]
first the points so i like the idea of
[119]
getting something back for free
[120]
when you spend whether that's free
[122]
flights free shopping credits gift
[124]
certificates
[125]
exciting stuff like that because usually
[127]
credit cards when you spend with the
[128]
credit card
[129]
you also accumulate points and the
[131]
points you accumulate you're able to
[133]
convert
[133]
into a reward unfortunately this
[135]
specific credit card because it's just a
[137]
basic tier
[138]
it doesn't really maximize the rewards
[140]
per person spent but we'll talk more
[141]
about that later
[143]
the second reason online transactions
[144]
are more secure when you use a credit
[146]
card
[146]
as opposed to a debit card i pay for a
[149]
lot of stuff online and that can be
[150]
really dangerous if you're using a debit
[152]
card that's linked to your bank account
[154]
if ever a hacker gets access to your
[155]
debit card details they have direct
[157]
access to all of the funds in your bank
[159]
account
[159]
if ever they use your debit card details
[161]
to pay for something that's worth 10
[163]
000 that's 10 000 pesos automatically
[165]
subtracted from your bank account
[167]
if they want they can even drain the
[168]
whole bank account very risky
[171]
so i had this experience where my debit
[172]
card was compromised and the hacker took
[174]
a lot of my savings away i was so
[176]
shocked
[176]
but yeah thankfully i was able to file a
[178]
dispute to get my funds back
[180]
but then filing disputes can be a bit
[182]
more difficult for debit cards because
[184]
the money is taken directly from your
[185]
account
[186]
what's great with credit cards is that
[188]
they're not directly linked to your bank
[189]
account
[190]
so this is not the best analogy but to
[192]
explain how credit cards work
[194]
let's say for example you're going to a
[195]
restaurant so when you go to a
[196]
restaurant right you order
[198]
food and then the waiter lists it down
[200]
cooks it for you serves it to you
[201]
and then at the end of the meal you get
[203]
your bill right and then you have to pay
[204]
for that bill
[205]
that's the same thing with credit cards
[207]
you essentially like swipe swipe and pay
[208]
for stuff
[209]
and then at the end of the month you'll
[210]
receive a bill for all of the
[212]
transactions you did during that month
[213]
and you have to pay that off yet so
[216]
credit cards are safer because they're
[218]
not directly linked to your bank account
[220]
if ever the hacker gets access to your
[221]
credit card details you can essentially
[223]
file the dispute tell your bank that's
[225]
not something i did
[226]
i'm not gonna pay for that next i got a
[228]
credit card so i can start building my
[230]
credit history
[231]
so eventually you might need to take out
[233]
the loan from the bank so maybe
[235]
so that you can take out a home loan car
[237]
loan stuff like that
[238]
even if you have the cash flow to pay
[240]
for that loan it will be a bit difficult
[242]
for you to get approved for that loan
[244]
if you don't have an existing credit
[245]
history credit history is just a way for
[248]
the bank to assess whether or not they
[250]
should lend you money
[251]
so let's say you're gonna lend money to
[253]
your friends would you be willing to
[254]
lend money to a friend who has a history
[256]
of not paying back their utang
[258]
nobody would be more willing to lend
[259]
your money to friends who pay you back
[261]
after a week
[262]
chamber you want to make sure that the
[263]
friends that you lend money to will pay
[265]
you back
[265]
that's what a credit history does so
[267]
yeah bad credit history friend
[270]
good credit history friend so when you
[272]
have a credit card and you diligently
[274]
pay it in full every single month you
[275]
never miss a payment
[276]
that shows the bank that you're
[278]
trustworthy that you're actually
[279]
responsible with your loans
[281]
so they're more likely to approve you
[283]
for a loan so yeah i got a credit card
[285]
so i can start building my credit
[286]
history as early as now
[288]
and then credit cards are essentially
[290]
super powered cash
[292]
so credit cards can be good or bad
[294]
depending on how you use it
[295]
i see credit cards as super powered cash
[298]
meaning i will treat it like
[299]
cash i will only spend on this card what
[302]
i have money to pay for in cash
[304]
so this is not like extra cash no way i
[307]
need to have the money to pay for this
[309]
and also with credit cards i can
[311]
leverage my cash
[312]
that essentially means like time value
[314]
of money right so if i have stuff i need
[316]
to pay with this card
[317]
i can wait for it if it's at the end of
[318]
the month i'll put it in a higher
[320]
savings account first let it earn a bit
[322]
more interest
[323]
before i use that cash to pay for my
[325]
bill all right
[326]
so why this card this is a video visa
[329]
classic credit card
[330]
why did i apply for this specific card
[332]
so this is a very basic card it
[334]
essentially gives you one point
[336]
per 50 peso spin so this is actually not
[338]
a regular credit card yet because if i
[340]
were to apply for a regular credit card
[342]
i know that i will get rejected because
[344]
i'm still a student and i have no stable
[346]
source of income
[347]
it's a bit hard to apply for credit
[348]
cards especially if it's your first
[350]
credit card
[351]
because you don't have an established
[352]
credit history yet you don't have a lot
[354]
of choices
[355]
so this one this is a secured credit
[357]
card which means that i needed to
[358]
deposit a whole lot amount
[360]
to be able to get this card secured
[363]
credit cards are more or less
[364]
guaranteed approval because you put up
[366]
collateral if ever you're not able to
[368]
pay for your credit card bill and then
[370]
they take
[370]
the hold out amount so do i so i have a
[373]
bdo security credit card
[375]
other banks do this we'll talk about
[377]
that more in a bit but essentially the
[378]
way it works that right you're going to
[380]
deposit 15
[381]
000 pesos in a time deposit that's your
[383]
hold up amount right you're not allowed
[385]
to touch that
[386]
so secured credit cards usually give you
[388]
80 to 90 percent of the amount that you
[390]
deposited
[390]
as your credit limit 90 of that is
[393]
thirteen thousand five hundred
[394]
so your credit limit what you're allowed
[396]
to spend is thirteen thousand five
[397]
hundred
[398]
so this basic credit card is just for me
[400]
to start building my credit history
[402]
no fancy reward yet but in the future
[405]
maybe six to twelve months
[406]
once i'm able to establish a good credit
[408]
history paying it back
[409]
always in full in time then maybe it
[412]
will be easier for me to apply for other
[414]
credit cards
[415]
or a request to release my holdout
[417]
amount and also even though this is a
[419]
secured credit card it still has an
[420]
annual fee
[421]
so the annual fee for this one is 1500
[424]
or 125 pesos per month
[426]
for most mastermind you're able to waive
[428]
the annual fees as long as you spend a
[429]
certain amount
[430]
i find out next year i'll update you
[432]
guys right
[434]
so now let's talk about what i had to go
[436]
through in order to get this majestic
[438]
card
[438]
my bank is bdo so i apply that video
[441]
some banks don't really promote their
[442]
secured credit cards like bdo
[444]
you're probably more familiar with the
[446]
bpi express start or security bank
[448]
secured credit card
[450]
i essentially went to the branch i
[451]
walked in and then i told the teller yo
[454]
i want a secured credit card i asked if
[457]
i was allowed to get a secured credit
[458]
card because i was only 20
[460]
and then on the website it says you need
[461]
to be at least 21 years old
[463]
the teller told me that you're allowed
[465]
as long as you're above 18 years old and
[466]
then you have the minimum
[467]
holdout deposit so they asked me for two
[470]
ids i gave my driver's license and my
[472]
tin card
[473]
and they made me fill up some forms and
[475]
then sign this deed of assignment which
[478]
i had to go and
[479]
authorize for myself which was quite a
[481]
hassle
[485]
and then i brought a proof of address
[487]
and then the money i was going to
[488]
deposit
[489]
and then this is the funny part i
[490]
applied last july
[492]
july and i only received this card
[495]
december
[496]
i have no idea why it took so long
[498]
because usually it's supposed to be a
[500]
fast approval
[501]
because you already deposited the
[502]
required amount i had to complain
[505]
several times to their hotline and they
[506]
kept delaying it
[508]
so i had to complain to the bsp and they
[510]
said
[511]
they investigated and it was the fault
[513]
of a certain agent
[514]
i don't know whatever so annoying i had
[516]
to follow up so many times
[517]
ah hopefully the same thing doesn't
[519]
happen to you guys that was just
[520]
like one big hassle but whatever i
[523]
finally have my card woohoo
[525]
now for some of my thoughts so bdo is
[527]
not the only bank that offers secured
[529]
credit cards
[530]
when doing my research i've actually
[531]
found six so that's security
[534]
bar bdo aub rcbc
[537]
bpi and metrobam so depending on the
[540]
bank the minimum holdout deposit could
[542]
be
[542]
different amounts and the credit limit
[544]
can also differ
[546]
i would probably recommend applying at
[547]
another bank just because of my
[548]
experience
[549]
and frankly the rewards program of video
[552]
is not that nice
[553]
so if ever you're thinking of applying
[555]
for a secured credit card i would
[556]
probably recommend another bank maybe
[559]
you can look at bpi their blue card
[561]
so their required deposit is ten
[564]
thousand pesos if it's an atm passbook
[566]
and fifty thousand pesos if it's in the
[568]
time deposit and they also give you
[569]
ninety percent of your holdout amount
[571]
the bpi real thrills reward system seems
[574]
more exciting than what bdo offers and
[578]
you can earn one point per 35 pesos
[580]
spend
[581]
i think for secured credit cards the
[583]
focus really isn't the reward system
[585]
that much it's really just
[586]
for you to be able to start building
[588]
your credit that's the focus and then in
[590]
the future you can
[591]
level up in your credit card reward
[593]
tiers and get
[594]
even more exclusive rewards but yeah
[597]
after talking about all of these things
[599]
i want to emphasize that you need to be
[601]
responsible
[602]
if you're going to get a credit card a
[604]
lot of people fall into the trap of
[605]
accumulating large amounts of credit
[607]
card debt
[608]
just because they don't know how to use
[610]
the card wisely or they don't know how
[612]
to properly control their spending
[614]
i'm already confident that i'm going to
[616]
use this credit card wisely
[618]
because i've been tracking all of my
[619]
expenses my entire finance system
[621]
for the past two years credit cards are
[624]
just a tool
[625]
so as long as you're able to pay your
[627]
credit card bill
[628]
in time in full every single month then
[631]
i don't think there's going to be any
[632]
problem
[633]
we have two featured comments for this
[635]
week the first one is from alfonso
[637]
alfonso says that he has started doing
[639]
financial planning and gathering data on
[641]
how investment savings accounts
[642]
funds all of those things would work
[644]
he's currently 17 years old still a
[646]
minor
[646]
not working yet but he's consistently
[648]
giving himself time
[649]
to explore the financial world out there
[652]
so solid
[652]
that's so cool thank you guys thank you
[654]

[659]
a lot of comments
[660]
who are underage asking me on how to
[662]
start investing because they really want
[664]
to start
[664]
i guess the best investment you can make
[666]
now is investing in yourself first
[668]
learn about all of these things first
[670]
you're still young you still have a lot
[671]
of time
[672]
don't fomo into it it's important to
[674]
build that solid financial foundation in
[676]
your mind as well
[677]
once you're able to start investing now
[679]
you can do it responsibly properly
[682]
then we have aj silent follower not used
[685]
