How Much Does Payment for Order Flow Cost You? We Did an Experiment. - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[5]
in an earlier episode i made my first trades聽 on robinhood but let's step back and try to聽聽
[10]
figure out why the online brokerage firm聽 is so popular online trading is not new聽聽
[15]
roughly 25 years ago a slew of online brokerages聽 like e-trade emerged letting people trade on聽聽
[21]
their home computers for a fraction of what聽 traditional brokerages charge i like to trade聽聽
[25]
online you know you give a kid a computer and聽 thinks he can beat the market the sites even聽聽
[29]
had flashy ad campaigns to appeal to a young聽 generation of home-based tech-enabled creators
[37]
this christmas everything is getting blowed up
[48]
but over the last decade those traders felt they聽 were losing out to moneyed hedge funds that were聽聽
[53]
better equipped to seize upon and perhaps聽 even create their own trading opportunities聽聽
[58]
in fact just three years ago the wall street聽 journal reported that 80 of daily trading聽聽
[63]
volume in the us was computer generated and聽 based on algorithmic models then in 2015 came聽聽
[70]
the robinhood app offering what it called free聽 trading and empowering a new generation of traders聽聽
[77]
as we saw in previous episodes registration was聽 easy as was making my first stock purchase also聽聽
[83]
in the time since i've opened my account i've been聽 flooded with alerts on how my portfolio is doing聽聽
[89]
and although i was skeptical about the hype i聽 have to admit it's made me eager to log in of聽聽
[94]
course nothing especially in the world of finance聽 is ever truly free while traders may not see聽聽
[100]
fees on their trades robin hood is actually聽 being compensated by payment for order flow聽聽
[105]
when you place the trade on robinhood in the聽 background market makers like citadel securities聽聽
[109]
and virtue are paying brokerages like robinhood聽 to execute the trades these market makers make聽聽
[115]
their money by buying the shares for less than聽 they sell them for moments later roughly eighty聽聽
[120]
percent of robin hood's revenue comes from payment聽 for order flow to the blind eye there's not much聽聽
[125]
to see but regulators and others worry that these聽 compensation arrangements aren't clearly spelled聽聽
[131]
out and that retail traders may not be getting a聽 fair shake in august sec chair gary gensler said聽聽
[137]
the agency is reviewing payment for order flow聽 and eliminating it is quote on the table and聽聽
[143]
then at the milken institute investor conference聽 in october market participants speculated what聽聽
[148]
would happen if payment for order float went away聽 according to joe mckean of citadel securities the聽聽
[153]
market makers would actually make more money聽 because they'd no longer be paying for flow聽聽
[158]
and brokerages would likely have to resort to聽 charging fees again in the end the debate may聽聽
[164]
just come around to transparency either way i聽 want to test it out no i am not doing dueling聽聽
[171]
laptops or dueling pianos here i am going to聽 do a little experiment where i am going to buy聽聽
[177]
the same amount of shares of the same stock at the聽 same time on two platforms my robinhood account聽聽
[184]
over here my fidelity account over here i'm going聽 to go with smile direct club now smile direct club聽聽
[191]
has been the weakest performer in my portfolio聽 it's down around 40 but as they sometimes say聽聽
[197]
buy the dip so let's see if maybe i can lower my聽 cost basis maybe catch some upside on this stock聽聽
[203]
robinhood is showing that smile direct shares聽 go for four dollars and three cents right now聽聽
[208]
uh fidelity is showing four dollars and two cents聽 fidelity has a disclosure that its quotes can be聽聽
[213]
delayed by at least 15 minutes i don't see that聽 disclosure on robinhood doesn't mean that there聽聽
[220]
isn't a delay there so i am going to do my best聽 to try to execute these trades at exactly the same聽聽
[227]
time maybe this pointer is a little bit stronger聽 than this one we'll try my best let's line this up
[238]
okay the trades have been placed so on my聽 robinhood side it is showing a market buy聽聽
[244]
of twenty dollars and fourteen cents聽 now on the fidelity side i am seeing聽聽
[251]
twenty dollars and fifteen cents so we're looking聽 at the difference of a penny not a big difference聽聽
[258]
penny doesn't really add up too much but if you're聽 trading thousands of shares millions of dollars聽聽
[263]
those pennies or even fractions of a penny聽 eventually do add up risen questions about who's聽聽
[269]
getting the best execution for trading as for me聽 we'll see where my shares of smile direct end up
[276]
next time we'll take a look at what regulators聽 think about the meme trading phenomenon
