What is Binance CEO most excited about in 2022? | Interview with CZ - YouTube
Channel: Cointelegraph
[17]
Hi, my name is Joe.
[19]
I'm here today with a man who needs no
[21]
introduction. CZ from Binance.
[24]
CZ, hello, welcome. Bienvenu.
[26]
How are you doing today?
[27]
Très bien.
[29]
Très bien! It's been here a couple of days and
[31]
already learning French.
[32]
Actually I learned French for many years.
[36]
But that's always my worst course in high school.
[38]
Oh, okay, okay.
[39]
Whereas crypto, obviously, very, very ahead in
[43]
terms of crypto. So we've just come from your
[45]
stage this morning where you were talking about
[46]
the best way to handle a business is to step out
[49]
and to look at it from a different perspective.
[52]
How do you personally detach yourself from
[54]
managing Binance, you know, this giant that
[56]
you've built?
[60]
So for Binance, anything that's operational, I
[63]
don't touch. And if I touch it, it's going to be
[65]
a disaster because it's going to be stuck all the
[67]
time. So we've moved away from, but you can only
[71]
do that once your team gets
to a certain size, of course.
[73]
Right. So you can't do a startup that way.
[76]
And so once our team get to a certain size, they
[78]
actually don't want me to touch operational
[80]
stuff. So I typically get involved in newer
[83]
things and less certain, less procedure type of
[88]
things. So anything that can be procedurized,
[90]
investments, we have an investment team doing that
[92]
listing, we have a listing team doing that.
[95]
Running the exchange, we have a team doing that.
[97]
And like, for example, dealing with regulations,
[100]
talking with senior government officials, etc,
[104]
now I have to do some of that.
[106]
Hiring the best people at the senior levels, have
[109]
to do some of that. So I do more of those type of
[112]
more strategic, not urgent type of things.
[115]
Okay. Yeah, absolutely.
[116]
I mean, just on that note of hiring executives
[119]
and talking to regulators, I mean, I have a list
[121]
here which I'm not going to read out today.
[123]
But, you know, Binance has hired execs from the
[126]
Dubai fintech authority, the Dutch police, the
[128]
IRS, I could go on.
[130]
I mean, what's the play here?
[131]
What are you getting at?
[133]
It's very simple, right? So, number one, we
[136]
started as a technology startup, so we didn't
[138]
have a strong compliance background.
[141]
And so, the best place to hire this compliance
[143]
background is either from traditional banks or
[146]
from traditional regulators.
[148]
And we hired many people from banks as well.
[153]
But hiring people from existing regulators is
[156]
good in a number of ways.
[157]
They come in, they can look at what we're doing
[160]
in a lot of detail, give us a gap analysis to
[162]
help us how to improve, etc.
[165]
More importantly, they can communicate with their
[167]
ex-colleagues, the regulators still today, in a
[171]
way they understand each other.
[173]
And they also have, many of them have the history
[175]
going back 10, 15, 20 years.
[178]
And then when they say something, they believe
[181]
each other because they use a common language.
[183]
Whereas when the regulators ask me questions,
[185]
when I say something, they're sometimes a little
[187]
bit skeptical. I'm a crypto guy.
[189]
Do I really know my stuff or stuff like that.
[191]
So the communication really improves and the trust
[193]
really improves. And the knowledge base for us
[196]
really improves. So we find that super helpful.
[199]
So in places where we were able to hire
[202]
ex-regulators, we see the relationship
[205]
communication improve almost immediately.
[208]
And so that has been a huge help.
[209]
Yeah, absolutely.
[210]
Okay. And so you occupy a unique vantage point in
[213]
the crypto industry.
[215]
Is that perhaps a trend or an undercurrent,
[219]
something that perhaps people aren't noticing at
[221]
the moment that you're quite keen to talk about
[223]
today?
[224]
Not so much, to be honest.
[225]
Like crypto is pretty transparent.
[228]
We actually have to monitor the industry trends
[230]
carefully to make sure that we don't miss
[232]
anything. So when DeFi is growing, we're like:
[235]
"Hey, what are we doing in the DeFi?
[237]
Are we doing enough investments?
[239]
Are we doing enough projects in the DeFi space?"
[241]
When NFTs are growing there we say: "Hey, are we
[244]
doing enough?" So we don't have a lot of extra
[247]
information that people don't have.
[249]
In fact, on the contrary, we often get too busy
[251]
running Binance.com that we may miss something
[254]
that's popular now.
[255]
So many people think I know all the coins, I have
[258]
a vantage point, but the fact is I don't know
[262]
most coins because I'm busy running Binance.
[264]
Well, I'm not really doing much, but I still have
[266]
a lot of meetings. Yeah, it's still pretty busy.
[268]
Okay, absolutely. Okay, well, let's flip the
[270]
question around then. What are you most excited
[272]
about in 2022?
[275]
I think in 2022, we are now seeing regulators want
[279]
to attract this industry now.
[280]
So I think that's one of the most fundamental
[282]
things we see.
[284]
Multiple countries like, you know, US issued
[286]
executive order, they want to do their stablecoin.
[290]
Dubai issued the regulatory framework, and
[292]
issued a number of licenses to big players, which
[294]
is significant.
[296]
And getting licenses in Bahrain, other places.
[300]
So we're seeing that. And also now we're in
[302]
France.
[304]
France, Portugal, Sweden, Gibraltar, they're all
[309]
very positive towards crypto.
[311]
So I think that really helps the adoption.
[314]
And the other stuff like the industry always
[316]
innovating like this GameFi, this metaverse.
[319]
Not sure how they will shape.
[320]
GameFi is pretty standard now.
[323]
I think it continues to iterate and improve.
[326]
Metaverse — multiple people, multiple companies
[328]
are trying different things. We'll see how it
[330]
plays out.
[331]
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
[332]
I mean, yeah, we're here today in La Bourse,
[334]
which is the old stock exchange.
[336]
And of course you were explaining the story
[338]
earlier, I just thought it'd be interesting to
[339]
share it today, but yeah.
[341]
So where's the location of where we are right now
[343]
and where's the French regulator?
[345]
Yeah. So, in setting up this conference,
[352]
our team, our France team asked for permission to
[355]
put a banner, say banners 'We love France' on the
[358]
top of the building, which is La Bourse, the
[361]
traditional exchange building.
[363]
And also the AMF office is right across the
[366]
street, and they have a view on this building.
[370]
My understanding is our team specifically got
[371]
permission from them to have the banner set up so
[374]
that we didn't want to surprise them with hanging
[376]
our banner on top of the exchange building and
[378]
surprise them. So we explicitly got permission,
[380]
and they're totally cool with it, which shows that
[384]
the progressiveness of the French government, the
[386]
French regulators, that they are extremely
[389]
confident, extremely progressive and extremely
[391]
pro-industry. So yeah, so I think just little
[395]
things like that, you can tell.
[397]
Yes.
[398]
It gives you the indication of how comfortable we
[401]
feel with the governments here.
[403]
And that's why we want to make heavy investments.
[405]
We want to grow the industry here.
[406]
Absolutely. I mean, you don't get much more
[408]
transparent than that, do you?
[409]
You know, big flag on the top of La Bourse.
[411]
Yeah. So, yeah.
[412]
So I think it's just one of those little things
[414]
that, you know, a little bit more promotion, etc.
[417]
But it's great to have that support from the
[421]
regulators, the government, and also the other
[423]
industry players here.
[424]
Thank you so much for your time this morning, CZ.
[426]
It was lovely to talk to you.
[427]
And yeah, best of luck with the conference.
[429]
Thank you so much for having me as always.
[431]
Thank you.
