Channel: 1st Formations

[12]
Hello Nicholas Campion here with another instalment of whiteboard
[15]
thursdays brought to you by 1st Formations in
[18]
today's video we are looking at company SIC codes
[22]
and to do this we're going to explore where to find
[25]
company SIC codes what sort of SIC codes your company can use
[30]
and of course how to change your codes in the future should you require
[35]
so an SIC code or to use its full name the standard industrial classification
[40]
code is a unique sequence of five numbers
[43]
that represent a specific economic activity
[47]
when the new UK company is incorporated the company's house
[50]
at least one SIC code needs to be reported
[53]
and this is to classify the sort of trade carried out by that business
[58]
introduced by the office for national statistics the ONS in 1948
[63]
the use of SIC codes in the UK provides a framework for the collection
[68]
presentation and analysis of data this enables government agencies and
[73]
non-governmental bodies to get a better understanding of the types of businesses
[77]
operating here in the UK companies house uses SIC codes
[81]
to track the number of uk registered companies operating in different
[85]
industries this helps them identify emerging trends
[89]
or monitor the health of individual industry
[92]
sectors and to understand the ever-changing economic landscape
[96]
across the UK so to start with let's talk about where you can find the
[103]
SIC codes for your company now you can find the available SIC codes
[108]
on the condensed list of SIC codes directly from Companies
[112]
House now this is a compact version of the
[115]
full list of the UK standard industrial
[118]
classifications of economic activities published in 2007
[122]
which is available directly from the ONS you can only use SIC codes from the
[128]
condensed list when making filings at Companies House
[131]
and the sort of filings that you're looking at are
[133]
your company formation and your Confirmation Statement
[136]
if you fail to include SIC codes on here you know your filing may be rejected
[140]
so if your company is using an old SIC code from one of the
[144]
perhaps the 2003 version you need to find the equivalent 2007
[148]
and provide that one and send it in on your next confirmation statement
[153]
the condensed list of SIC codes categorizes over
[156]
700 economic activities into broadly 21 different groups
[161]
examples of these groups include section A which is agriculture
[165]
forestry and fhishing section J which is information and communication
[169]
and section L for real estate activities to find your code you need to search the
[175]
condensed list to find the most appropriate trade description
[179]
and find the corresponding sic code to that
[182]
although the list is considerable it is by no means exhaustive
[186]
that means you may have to provide more than one sic code
[189]
to adequately describe what your business is doing
[193]
some trade descriptions are very specific such as growing grapes or
[197]
plastering meanwhile there are some that are very
[200]
general such as physical well-being activities
[202]
or even simply other business support activities
[206]
not elsewhere classified how easy it is to find the most appropriate sic code
[211]
for yourself really depends on the sort of things
[213]
your company is doing and you may need to spend some time
[216]
looking through the list to find the code that's best suited for you
[221]
so that's where you can find sic codes but how many sic codes can your company
[225]
actually report now we mentioned at the start that at
[229]
least one code has to be provided during the formation process
[232]
even if your company is dormant or non-trading
[235]
most people find that one is sufficient for their needs however you can use up
[239]
to four if your business
[242]
activities are varied or complex or simply can't be described in one
[246]
single code you always want to get the best sort of
[250]
coverage of your company's activities with your codes so in many cases it
[254]
might be beneficial or indeed it is the best choice
[257]
for you to use multiple codes for example if you have a cafe or restaurant
[261]
that provides takeaway and off-licence services
[264]
you can use the code 56101 licensed restaurants together with 56103
[269]
takeaway food and of course 46342 wholesale of alcoholic beverages but you
[276]
should be wary of using multiple SIC codes
[279]
for property activities this can sometimes pose a challenge with HMRC
[283]
mortgage lenders and other finance providers if all of the activities here
[287]
are carried out through one company in such instances we would strongly
[291]
recommend seeking professional advice and assistance from an accountant before
[295]
making any applications to third parties now businesses can change over time
[300]
and so you might be wondering yourself can you change your SIC codes with it
[304]
and of course the simple answer to that is yes
[307]
you can change your SIC code or codes if you have multiple
[311]
at any time if your principal business business activity
[314]
changes or it becomes more varied simply find the most appropriate SIC code
[319]
on the condensed list and then report it on the next Confirmation Statement
[324]
alternatively you can report the SIC codes in real time
[328]
by simply filing your next Confirmation Statement early
[331]
1st Formations does actually provide a confirmation statement service which is
[334]
ideal for just these sorts of purposes the fee for this is just 拢34.99 and more
[339]
information can be found on our website now let's briefly discuss what you
[344]
should do if you provide the wrong SIC code on your
[347]
company and this happens quite often it's not really a huge issue simply
[352]
because this sort of error can be fixed quickly and quite
[355]
easily but we do recommend if you find you've got the wrong SICs to
[359]
change them as soon as possible otherwise you may face issues with
[362]
lenders insurers and so forth SIC codes are particularly important to
[367]
lenders and insurance underwriters because the activities of a company play
[371]
a crucial role in their decision-making process
[373]
providing the wrong information could lead to rejected finance applications
[378]
and invalid insurance policies finally let's talk about the SIC codes
[383]
you should use if your company is dormant now dormant and non-trading
[388]
companies actually have their own specific SICs
[390]
that they can use if your company is dormant i.e. it's not
[394]
trading and has no significant accounting
[397]
transactions going through you should use the SIC code 99999
[401]
if your company is non-trading however
[405]
which is where it's not really doing any business but certain transactions are
[408]
still going through the books then you would want to use 74990
[413]
and that's it so in this video we have looked at what an SIC
[416]
code is where you can find them how you can change them
[420]
and what to do if you've accidentally provided the wrong one
[423]
