Channel: Learning Perspectives

[6]
hello everybody welcome to yet another聽 episode of learning perspectives聽聽
[11]
today we are going to deconstruct聽 a scene from the movie 1,2,3
[59]
have a good day if you're satisfied with our聽 services tell others if not tell us take care
[68]
now the scene that you just聽 saw shows you how uh layla has聽聽
[75]
taken a loan of rupees 25 lakh from a bank ICUC聽聽
[81]
and she's been unable to pay this amount of on the聽 various installments for just almost 10 months now聽聽
[92]
she is being confronted by two bank employees who聽 have come there to ask for their money back she's聽聽
[99]
being served a notice basically and you know聽 being asked for her money for the money back聽聽
[107]
room and she put some cars in there but uh you聽 know the bank is unable to recover that money聽聽
[115]
from her so the bank says that we will sell聽 all your car cars to recover that money in this聽聽
[122]
episode we will understand what exactly are bad聽 debts and also uh touch upon what exactly are npas聽聽
[131]
so bad debts basically are those debts that聽 have gone bad the the point that i'm trying to聽聽
[138]
make here is that kind of debt that generally is聽 somebody who is not able to pay their installments聽聽
[145]
back although bank when giving a loan always goes聽 through a checklist and making sure that this is a聽聽
[152]
customer who would be able to pay their money back聽 but there are times that it may happen that the聽聽
[160]
customer is unable to pay the money back and the聽 bank would be at a loss generally and in a lot聽聽
[168]
of times banks take collateral uh for collateral聽 you can uh look at the blog that have linked below聽聽
[177]
so uh but there can be times when customers are聽 unable to pay and banks have to recover this聽聽
[184]
by uh selling the asset that they have acquired so聽 in this case they are saying that we will sell off聽聽
[192]
all your cars now what happens in a bank's balance聽 sheet in this case or a bank's income statement聽聽
[199]
for that matter now banks often know that you聽 know there will be people who would default so聽聽
[207]
banks create a provision and majority of聽 the companies create a project provision聽聽
[213]
uh which is provision for doubtful debts as the聽 name itself is suggesting these are the people聽聽
[220]
who might be doubtful who might not give the money聽 back now this amount is generally shown uh in the聽聽
[229]
income statement and this is the provision and聽 the expenses are also recorded as credit so bad聽聽
[236]
dates are recorded as expenses for the company聽 obviously because they stand at losing that money聽聽
[245]
now when uh any customer does not pay for a聽 very long time and i would quantify this long聽聽
[253]
time this quant this i would not but rbi has聽 quantified this long long time uh as 90 days聽聽
[261]
so if a customer is not able to pay for more than聽 90 days that asset becomes a non-performing asset聽聽
[271]
which means that uh for example uh obviously聽 samira reddy or leila played in the movie has not聽聽
[280]
paid for more than 90 days correct because聽 he says 10 months so it's almost 300 days聽聽
[288]
somewhere around that so her as her she is now聽 qualified as a non-performing asset that means聽聽
[296]
um so for example so let's let's look at this聽 um when a bank gives a loan to you or me that聽聽
[306]
loan is an asset for the bank right even聽 though they are paying the money out right now聽聽
[314]
they would get this money uh back聽 over a period of time correct聽聽
[321]
so hence bank qualifies all the loans that they聽 have given out as an asset for the business now聽聽
[329]
when this asset is non-performing when this聽 asset is not giving any money back to the bank聽聽
[336]
then it becomes a non-performing asset so after 90聽 days uh it is qualified as a non-performing asset聽聽
[344]
now we all know this india is going and in fact聽 the world is going through a very challenging time聽聽
[350]
right now and um it's it's the time of ovid and we聽 have a situation where everybody is locked inside聽聽
[359]
and the economy itself is trying to聽 breathe life somehow hence in our country聽聽
[368]
the npa situation has gone from bad to worse even聽 though the npas were around 7.5 percent in uh聽聽
[378]
2020 uh rbi has forecasted that it may go as high聽 as 13.5 percent uh in 2021. um this situation is聽聽
[390]
very bad because people are defaulting on their聽 loans because they have themselves have lost their聽聽
[396]
jobs and they don't have that kind of money to pay聽 back to the bank hence npa is at a very big rise聽聽
[403]
now this is a challenging situation not just聽 for the banks but for the economy as a whole聽聽
[409]
because uh there seems to be a problem in聽 getting the money back into circulation聽聽
[417]
so uh banks also divide um assets into various聽 classes such as doubtful asset or a loss聽聽
[428]
asset standard asset substandard asset i聽 would encourage you to click on the link聽聽
