[0]
senator without republicans on board
[3]
that leaves you no option but to take
[5]
the so-called nuclear option which to
[7]
put into historical context you and
[9]
harry reid took in 2013 to get obama
[12]
appointees through and mitch mcconnell
[15]
who's now acting like a
[16]
filibuster-busting
[17]
virgin took in 2017 to get supreme court
[21]
nominees approved so but without your
[24]
fellow democrats joe manchin and
[26]
christian cinema
[27]
who have been adamant and saying they
[29]
won't support that what can you do do
[32]
you think they're bluffing can you agree
[34]
on something are you setting democrats
[36]
up for a disappointment what's what's
[38]
the plan b here
[40]
okay well and at first we have to make
[42]
this fight i think everyone would agree
[44]
that when they're trying to take away
[46]
voting rights and though the ones i
[47]
mentioned on on the last segment were
[49]
just a few you have to do something so
[52]
we're working very hard trying to
[54]
persuade joe manchin and kirsten cinema
[57]
therefore the two bills we want to put
[58]
up they just say we shouldn't change the
[61]
senate rules to do it but as i mentioned
[63]
the senate rules have been changed in
[65]
the past even by robert byrd who was joe
[67]
manchin's predecessor and mentor when
[70]
it's needed and we can change the rules
[73]
um to allow this to happen so we're
[76]
trying to persuade manchin and cinema to
[78]
do that because it's so important
[80]
ideally it would be great if republicans
[82]
would go along as they used to in the
[84]
past as i mentioned under reagan in the
[86]
bushes but they're not and we have no
[88]
choice can we persuade them we're
[90]
working very hard we met last night till
[93]
uh the in the evening hours we're
[95]
talking to them on a regular basis and
[97]
is it an uphill fight yes but are we
[99]
fighting as hard as we can yes must we
[102]
try to do everything we can because this
[104]
is so important absolutely you heard
[106]
what whoopi said uh there are a lot
[108]
millions of americans who feel just like
[110]
she does
[114]
senator in addition to voting rights uh
[117]
democrats have so far failed to deliver
[119]
on a a number of other promises things
[122]
like build back better police reform
[124]
humane immigration policies student loan
[126]
forgiveness with democrats running the
[129]
white house and both chambers of
[131]
congress why haven't you been able to
[133]
get any of this done
[135]
well some of it we have gotten done we
[137]
did do the arp bill which was probably
[140]
the most significant progressive piece
[142]
of legislation
[143]
since the great society in 50 years and
[146]
we got that done with 50 votes we need
[148]
to get every democrat and it's a broad
[150]
caucus running from bernie sanders to
[152]
joe manchin on board we work very hard
[154]
to do it so far we've gotten people on
[157]
board on the major bills that have come
[159]
before us but we're working very hard on
[161]
voting rights and bbb
[163]
the build back better bill which deals
[165]
with so many important things like child
[167]
care and climate and pre-k and we're
[170]
working very hard to get everyone on
[171]
board it's a very tough road to hoe when
[174]
you have 50 votes and any one senator
[177]
democrat who dissents
[178]
can pull it down if you get no
[180]
republicans and unfortunately this year
[183]
the republicans under donald trump's
[185]
leadership he's he just says he wants
[187]
the country he wants the administration
[189]
to fail so he can come back and try to
[191]
run again god forbid and so we have to
[194]
do it just ourselves that makes it
[196]
harder but we keep fighting and so far
[198]
we've had some good successes
[201]
senator the cdc has been under fire in
[204]
uh recent weeks forget giving shifting
[206]
and sometimes confusing information
[208]
regarding covid guidelines for things
[210]
like isolation and testing as the
[212]
omicron variant continues to lead to
[214]
record numbers of cases and
[216]
hospitalizations
[217]
two years into the pandemic are you
[219]
concerned about there being a
[221]
credibility crisis among federal health
[223]
agencies and do you maintain full
[225]
confidence in what's coming out of the
[226]
cdc
[228]
yeah well look you first the number one
[230]
thing coming out of the cdc is something
[232]
that i totally agree with it is the most
[234]
important thing that we can do which is
[236]
get people vaccinated get your two
[238]
vaccines and get the booster and some
[241]
people say well i don't care if i get a
[243]
covert i'll get covered but what happens
[245]
is when you're not vaccinated you can
[248]
help breed new variants of the covid
[251]
they spread around among the
[252]
unvaccinated population so number one
[255]
vaccinations boosters the whole if the
[258]
whole country had it this omicron would
[260]
have been a lot less severe and there
[262]
would be very little chance or much less
[265]
chance of new variants coming in with
[267]
the same virulence so that's number one
[269]
and number two look americans should
[271]
follow the science we have all kinds of
[273]
people on the internet who have no
[275]
scientific background no training who
[277]
say don't get vaccinated don't do this
[279]
don't do that follow the science the
[282]
science is very important to follow and
[284]
that's what i think we should all do
[288]
so thank you senator schumer remind them
[291]
we want the right to vote as americans
[294]
that's our right our birthright and we
[296]
expect you all to make it happen
